Helicopters crash quite a bit. Just like general aviation airplanes also crash quite a bit. The numbers of dead are always low per incident, so it isn't as dramatic as a big plane going down (or going lost) with hundreds of lives.

"Hard Landing", sounds like he might have been attempting an auto-rotation.
You might wanna look that up in Wikipedia, but in short, it's a landing without power, using only the free-wheeling rotation of the rotor, as it's grabbing what air it can on the gravity-ride down to the landing (or in this case, crash) site. That's a "you only get this one chance" situations, and there's a lot more ways to do it wrong than the one way to do it right. Remains to be seen if this was an auto-rotation, and what necessitated it if so. And if not? A basic navigational error ought not result in a hard landing, and running outta fuel would likely have precluded much of a fire in the first place. Any word on passengers, beside the pilot hisself? Finally, I'll add my voice the prayers going up for that pilot, and his family. Respectfully, Jim Sunk New DAwn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 10, 2019 03:38 PM (QzJWU) 70

False. I've done hundreds of auto-rotations in training. The killer is aerodynamic stall of the main rotor due to low RPM. This is unrecoverable. You can still keep it "in the green" by finessing the collective even with no power. Posted by: Eisenhorn at June 10, 2019 03:41 PM (uGHnY) 90

A couple years ago I paid $20 to take a flight around the local airport on a Huey at an airshow here, they were raising money for something - damn, that was a hell of a ride. I'd say the difference between riding in an airplane and in one of those vintage Huey's is the difference between riding in a nice comfortable 4 door sedan and being on the back of a Harley. The side doors were open, we had only a lap belt holding us on the seat, and on the turns, that thing would lay over on its side and you'd be looking out the door, straight down at the trees below you. And the sound! I could have shouted as loud as I was able, and the person next to me couldn't have heard me. We were all sitting right underneath a big engine that was screaming at max rpm's.

93 A couple years ago I paid $20 to take a flight around the local airport on a Huey at an airshow here, they were raising money for something - damn, that was a hell of a ride.
I did it once, that was enough for me! Posted by: Tom Servo at June 10, 2019 03:42 PM (k1TUh) I flew in a Vietnam War Huey a few weeks ago at a military show. Tomorrow we have primary elections. So I go to get some info from the County GOP.
No primaries. Likely because there are so many places they can't even get ONE candidate. Much less two. So no relevant elections. But I guess I can vote in the Dem primary. Well, only 1 race there, as the County Board chair retired, so all the other Dems are running for it. Well, 4. So I go to try to find out who is the least communist out of that crowd. Only one has not signed on to a pledge to end cooperation with ICE. So that is who I am going to vote for. Posted by: blaster at June 10, 2019 03:58 PM (9VeU0) 219
