Kauffman Cornelia.jpg

Cornelia, Mother Of The Gracci, Pointing To Her Children As Her Treasures
Angelica Kauffman

Angelica Kauffman painted at a time when women were heavily restricted from the royal academies, but she showed so much undeniable talent that she was a member of five across Europe. This work is an excellent example of Neoclassicism, a style about heroism, virtue and idealism. It is heavily theatrical and melodramatic. It was the first of two (or second of three depending on who you ask) major artistic expressions of the late Enlightenment period.

For me, the key elements in this work are composition and color. Cornelia dominates the painting, standing just off-center to the right, dressed in white, gold and purple. These three colors have high significance and give her an almost angelic, queenly, noble quality. Farther right, Cornelia holds her young daughter’s hand as she talks with another woman. The girl’s attention is on the shiny objects in the woman’s box. The other woman sits and is earnestly showing off her jewelry. She is also dressed in white and gold but these colors are covered with a vivid red, the color of carnality. Immediately, just by the colors alone, we are given a hint that there is something different about Cornelia.

These three figures are all connected and form one large mass of females. Two boys are to the left. The older boy’s colors mimic his mother’s, linking them and possibly saying that he is the nobler of the two. The younger boy is in red, maybe representing his immaturity. Red on both ends of the composition also frames and unifies the piece further. The younger boy is hunched over, forcing him to look up to his older brother too. This may foreshadow their adulthood when the younger will follow the older into politics and take over after the older is murdered.

A space separates the male and females but Cornelia unifies the groups using her eyes that look to the right and by her gesture towards the boys that draws the viewer’s eye to the left. The eyes swing back and forth across the canvas taking it all in. Cornelia is the tallest form in the painting and as we move to the edges the figures squat, creating a shallow triangle. This may be an homage to Greek pedimental sculpture, but it also makes everyone, including the viewer, look up to Cornelia, literally and figuratively. Kauffman’s attempts to move the eye around the piece while keeping the focus on Cornelia is important because those reds are so bright and dominant. The separation of the sexes may represent the gender expectations in Rome and Kauffman’s time. The boys are holding a book and a scroll signaling their focus on education and the intellect while their sister focuses on emotional and earthly things.

Kauffman is a woman in a profession dominated by men, painting for a female audience. Here, Cornelia is presented as the Ideal Mother, a model for women everywhere. While the other woman and the girl are preoccupied by shiny baubles and shallow things, her priorities are raising good, well-educated, grounded men. The Gracci brothers are known to Roman history as reformers and martyrs, and Kauffman answers the question of where such men come from… they come from good mothers.

116 Nice work.

A number of years ago (okay, several decades ago), I knew people in college who drew a parallel between John and Bobby Kennedy and the Gracchi brothers. Both pairs of siblings were considered "reformers," and both ended up being killed as martyrs. I'm not sure of the politics of the later Republic, but it might just have been that the Gracchi went against the landed interests, the optimates, who had them killed by inciting the Roman mob against them.

And there are those that say JFK and RFK were bumped off by people in the pay of our landed interests. Dunno . . . but the parallel is interesting.

Indeed. After a quick refresh, their redistribution of land thing wasn't the same as the "pay off the people" shtick of modern Leftists--it was a result of something causing a real issue in military recruitment. Summary, a lot of the public land had been gobbled up by the senators, often at the expense of smaller landholders. Since property ownership was required for military service, this was a problem. Add to that the fact that land grants were a common reward for military service--and there wasn't much left after the senators grabbed it all--and you get problems, like the troop revolts of the time.

Greedy senators causing national security issues, I guess there really is nothing new under the sun.

From what I've read Iran, despite being a Gulf power, doesn't have too much in the way of a military navy. It wouldn't take much effort for a real naval power like the US to deal a crippling blow to it.But we've got to be very careful how we handle this. I personally think Iran is baiting the US into a fight, because the sanctions are really hurting them. The mullahs are in trouble and they need to shake up the situation somehow, to turn the attention outwards instead of having their people rebel against the mullahs, which they are always a hair away from doing. In other words, the Iranian govt is getting nervous, and desperate.
Which probably means we need to just stay the course and let them implode. A military fight is exactly what they want right now.

As far as I know, Latin today is pretty much pronounced a lot like Italian. We can hardly ask the ancient Romans. I usually pronounce Latin words as if they were some unholy brew of Italian and Spanish.

What I've picked up in my studies is individual words and phrases, and the Latin words that many English words trace back to. I've also picked up that learning Latin involves learning one hell of a lot of grammar (case endings, verb conjugations . . . eccch).

328 WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court declined on Monday to change the longstanding rule that says putting someone on trial more than once for the same crime does not violate the Constitution's protection against double jeopardy - a case that drew attention because of its possible implications for President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort.

The 7-2 ruling was a defeat for an Alabama man, Terance Gamble, convicted of robbery in 2008 and pulled over seven years later for a traffic violation. When police found a handgun in his car, he was prosecuted under Alabama's law barring felons from possessing firearms. The local U.S. attorney then charged Gamble with violating a similar federal law. Because of the added federal conviction, his prison sentence was extended by nearly three years.

What rights did homosexuals not posses?

The right to marry?

There has never in the history of mankind been any concept of same sex marriage.

Gay marriage doesn't exist and never has existed.

It's a completely conjured concept that's been around for roughly 15 years.

It's never received the imprimatur from American citizens either through referendum or democratic representational means and institutions.

It was simply crammed down on us by black robed tyrants.

The central question was, How much power can Congress delegate? The majority said, basically, that if Congress wants to give away all of it's power to the Executive, that's their business, they can do what they want.

No Double Jeopardy. As States and the Fed Government are 'different' Sovereign Powers, there is no double Jeopardy for both the State and Feds trying you for the same crime.

I find this, very troubling.

So, while I like the fact that they are doing a strict reading of the Constitution, like they did in the Freedom of Speech case where they said a Corporation does not have to follow the 1st Amendment, they are only doing these rulings in very limited cases.

And it sets up a dichotomy where a State does not have to follow the Bill of Rights, thus a State CAN Inhibit your Gun Rights.

As we pointed out in the morning thread, the "long standing rule" has been that this practice is just fine, at least ever since those 4 cops were tried on Civil Rights charges for beating up Rodney King. SCOTUS upheld what we've been doing for the last 25 years at least.

They'd better be a *lot* cheaper if they're expendable. This is one of the problems with top-shelf military hardware, especially when it meets budget-cutting that ends up reducing program costs but driving the unit costs through the roof. The B-2 bomber is a formidable weapon, but the unit cost is so high that every one is a precious jewel.

Heller (200 was the first time the SCOTUS incorporated the 2nd amendment under the 14th Amendment, thus applying 2nd Amendment protections to the State Govm'ts as well as the Federal Govm't.

Incorporation of the Bill of Rights under the 14th Amendment, so that they also apply to the State Governments, has a been a very long, drawn out, and overly complicated process, going on for just about 150 years now. But we appear to have reached a point to where it is legally acknowledged that State Governments are just as tightly bound by the Fed'l Constitution as the Fed'l govm't is.

Proof yet again that any rule can be perverted by the Courts. Here's the text of the 13th ...

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for
crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist
within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

It says nothing about the Bill of Rights, yet here we are, stuck with the notion of Incorporation - one of the biggest abuses of Federal Power in the history of the Republic.

The Bill of Rights was argued against from the beginning for this very reason. What started as ten relatively simple limits on Federal Power has been perverted into over twenty different means by which the camel's nose has been allowed into the State's tent.

Iran's Gambit: Force the World to Rein In Trump

She said Tehran had settled on a "two-prong strategy of showing that they, too, can apply pressure by being a pain but also saying, 'We're willing to talk.' "

And because Iran cannot defy American might on its own, it may be hoping to coerce European and Asian nations to rein in the United States.

The result, the experts say, is an Iranian strategy, rational but risky, that increases the likelihood of the nuclear agreement's collapse and even of outright war in the hopes of compelling the world to avert both.

375 Then came bad news from South Bend, the town Buttigieg leads as mayor. A white police officer had shot and killed a black man early Sunday. Buttigieg canceled several days of campaign events -- including an LGBTQ gala in New York -- and rushed back to Indiana to "be with the South Bend community," in the words of a campaign spokesman.

Instead of showcasing Buttigieg's ability to lead through a crisis, however, the shooting is exposing what has long been considered an Achilles' heel of his candidacy: his frosty relationship with South Bend's black residents. Since arriving on Sunday, Buttigieg has alienated the family of the dead man, Eric Logan, 54, skipped a vigil at the scene of the shooting, and sought advice from outsiders, including the Rev. Al Sharpton of New York.
