Leftwing Magazine The Nation: We Must Get to the Bottom of Spygate

Good piece.

It's written by Steve Cohen, who is, depending on how charitably you want to put it, either a longtime skeptic of the intelligence community and the US policy towards Russia or a Russian toady and Soviet sympathizer.

But he's right in this:

US Attorney General William Barr now proposes to investigate the origins of Russiagate. He has appointed yet another special prosecutor, John Durham, to do so, but the power to decide the range and focus of the investigation will remain with Barr. The important news is Barr's expressed intention to investigate the role of other US intelligence agencies, not just the FBI, which obviously means the CIA when it was headed by John Brennan and Brennan's partner at the time, James Clapper, then director of national intelligence. As I argued in The Nation, Brennan, not Obama’' hapless FBI Director James Comey, was the godfather of Russiagate, a thesis for which more evidence has since appeared. We should hope that Barr intends to exclude nothing, including the two foundational texts of the deceitful Russiagate narrative: the Steele Dossier and, directly related, the contrived but equally ramifying Intelligence Community Assessment of January 2017. (Not coincidentally, they were made public at virtually the same time, inflating Russiagate into an obsessive national scandal.)

Thus far, Barr has been cautious in his public statements. He has acknowledged there was “spying,” or surveillance, on the Trump campaign, which can be legal, but he surely knows that in the case of Papadopoulos (and possibly of General Michael Flynn), what happened was more akin to entrapment, which is never legal. Barr no doubt also recalls, and will likely keep in mind, the astonishing warning Senator Charles Schumer issued to President-elect Trump in January 2017: "Let me tell you, you take on the intelligence community, they have six ways from Sunday at getting back at you." (Indeed, Barr might ask Schumer what he meant and why he felt the need to be the menacing messenger of intel agencies, wittingly or not.)

But Barr's thorniest problem may be understanding the woeful role of mainstream media in Russiagate. As Lee Smith, who contributed important investigative reporting, has written: "The press is part of the operation, the indispensable part. None of it would have been possible…had the media not linked arms with spies, cops, and lawyers to relay a story first spun by Clinton operatives." How does Barr explore this "indispensable" complicity of the media in originating and perpetuating the Russiagate fraud without impermissibly infringing on the freedom of the press?

Ideally, mainstream media--print and broadcast--would now themselves report on how and why they permitted intelligence officials, through leaks and anonymous sources, and as “opinion” commentators, to use their pages and programming to promote Russiagate for so long, and why they so excluded well-informed, nonpartisan alternative opinions. Instead, they have almost unanimously reported and broadcast negatively, even antagonistically, about Barr’s investigation, and indeed about Barr personally. (The Washington Post even found a way to print this: "William Barr looks like a toad...") Such is the seeming panic of the Russiagate media over Barr's investigation, which promises to declassify related documents, that The New York Times again trotted out its easily debunked fiction that public disclosures will endanger a purported US informant, a Kremlin mole, at Putin’s side.

Finally, but most crucially, what was the real reason US intelligence agencies launched a discrediting operation against Trump?

...

We are left, then, with this paradox, formulated in a tweet on May 24 by the British journalist John O'Sullivan: "Spygate is the first American scandal in which the government wants the facts published transparently but the media want to cover them up."

But I have listened to Cohen on John Batchelor - he gives him an hour every week to discuss Russia and US issues. Surprising, considering his wife is the chief editor, Katerina whatshername, from The Nation.

He does give Russia more benefit of the doubt than they sometimes deserve, and is a Russian apologist, but he has been right on for several years about what is happening re the deep state.

Again, Russia is not our enemy. They have a GDP the size of Italy. Yes, they have nukes, but I don't go to sleep fearing that they will launch an attack. They have a sphere of influence where they want to be preeminent. We push back. Frankly, we should be less involved there and let Europe handle it if they fear the ruskies (which I don't think they really do - it's a good sledgehammer to hit trump). If Eastern Europe doesn't want Russia interfering, they need to build a strong coalition (which we can be part of) and take the lead. Won't happen while the EU is there oppressing them.

I view the EU as more dangerous than Russia... They want to destroy Europe and socialize it. Russia isn't interested in that anymore, but the seeds the Soviets left have borne their evil fruit, here and in Europe, and we have to deal with them like the vermin they are...

Probably. Putin can't live forever. Russia today is a pest, but I think its mostly because they want some respect which they haven't really given them since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Not so Iran, who are real adversaries. Same with China. It infuriated me when Obola gave them billions in cool cash that they immediately spread around, killing more Americans (they were the largest suppliers of arms against us for the last 15 years in Iraq, and I don't forgive Bush for letting them slide).

I don't worship Trump, but he has really set the priorities where they need to be. China, Iran, Korea. Two Bushes, a Clinton, and a disease of the body politic have really left us screwed. God knows where we would be if Hillary had won (Kurt Schlichter's America?)

137 As others have said, Barr's only "action" WRT the media will be to lay out the facts - whatever's left of the civic culture, standards, or common sense will have to take care of the rest.

Yeah, I know. But true.

On the evergreen topic of media as neutral vs. media as partisans, it's hard to put into a snappy slogan or gross generalization, but there *was*, very much, a watchdog or effectively neutral role of the press in modern times, that has almost completely abandoned [it still exists in the "new" media, and corners of the old].

The Barr interview. There's an example of what used to be common.

Many may not be old enough to recall how Roger Mudd, in one interview, ended Ted Kennedy's [already ridiculous, and purely inertial] presidential quest. Bill Clinton didn't get enough help from the press to avoid being seen as a corrupt, scandal-drenched incompetent - for those paying attention [remember the farcical first wave of abortive cabinet appointments, one after the other being torpedoed by media frenzy?].

When Reagan was at the very apex of the Cold War struggle with the Russians, with nukes very much in the spotlight, who became a key State Dept. arms control official? The NYT' s Washington national security correspondent. Uh huh. Imagine anything like that being possible today.

Things *have* changed, they *were* very different, and over-generalizing about there never having been a real press is incorrect and understates the problem today.

A couple of times in the Republic's history, there have been shifts where the two sides basically switched. If we are inclined to wonder how that could have happened, we are witnessing it right now. Basically, the natural drift of history and institutions is "leftward," or towards resistance and the many forms of totalitarianism that it produces, all predicated on Utopia. Eventually that drift will facilitate to a flanking maneuver.

It's supposed to be the FBI General Counsel. Who was bypassed for the FISA warrant on Carter Page.
And the FBI General Counsel at the time (James Baker) is dirty too. He's starting to sing because he sees where this is going.

In my view, the jury is out on the FISA courts. Presumably they have to act on the information provided to them by the FBI. If the FBI swears itself blue that their allegations are on the up and up, I don't see what alternative a FISA judge has other to accept their representation. He's in no position to investigate their claims.

I don't have an answer except to say one will be forced to submit to the other. It will be us kneeling or it will be them. No other solution seems workable. We can't divorce on regional basis, nor on a county level.

Divorce would just kick the can down the road and make the eventual war all the worse.

148 one decent theory is that the globalist cabal is a threat to all nation states, especially if they get (even more) control of the US Superpower.

Macron and Merkel are fully on board with their own globalist division in the EU, and Hillary/Kerry/Jarret seemed to be hand in glove with them.

But Russia ... probably not. In that sense it is possible Putin did prefer Trump, but then again, he was getting control of US with Uranium One (cornering the market, sort of) ... the same way Putin had leverage over Europe via natural gas (and oil I guess).

But I don't know where all these covert ops are heading ... some say we need a Russia/India/US alliance, not a China/Pakistan/US alliance ... I don't know that much about geo-political force structure to have a solid opinion ... except the former seems more Western.

Maybe repealing the 17th? That would solve a whole slew of problems, and I think the States would be totally on board with that.

That being said, I understand Joe's fear. I have it too. But my wife is from the former Yugoslavia, and I have seen what happens during civil wars. Her father was shot trying to keep his muslim friends and coworkers from being slaughtered (he was the serbian manager and chief engineer of the local coal mine). While visiting his grave, my wife pointed out the young brothers who were hunted in the hills and murdered by the Bosniak (i.e., muslim) Yugoslavs, the long couple burned in their house, etc. It got ugly and left devastation in its wake that they haven't even come close to getting over.

By the way, when the US went over there, they had no problem "moving" mass amounts of Serbians around the country, taking them from their homes, and then handing those homes and properties over the the new Bosnian govt as a primary muslim area. I think this was part of Bill trying to suck up the the Muslim world, and it didn't work...

The MSM only focused on the new SALT caps, and 1/2 the population now thinks they pay more even though the pay less tax. The MSM's power to persuade public opinion hasn't decreased at all.

No, it won't.

Successful impeachment and a failure to get conviction in the Senate is something I'm not sure the activist left thinks much about.

It's possible that they don't know that the Senate would play a roll in the process at all, and they believe that a House impeachment vote would be the literal end of Trump.

Maybe, in some twisted way, it would convince the activist left to fight harder for the Senate, but if the acquittal vote ends up something like 55-45 (a couple of Democrats voting for acquittal), it becomes the question of what good came of this? What composition of the Senate will lead to conviction?

It's an insanely high bar, and I think that once the activist left realized that it would demoralize them, especially with a Trump win in 2020.

The establishment really did box themselves in by not tamping down on impeachment talk right after they got the House.

No, I think you may have missed my satirical point.

The comment was in response to the idea that D/R's switched in the 60s. If that's the case, then modern day Republicans would revere Wilson/FDR and modern day Democrats would revere Calvin Coolidge.

The idea of the switch is just a dumb way for Democrats to claim more moral authority from the Civil Rights Act (which more Republicans voted for than Democrats proportionally) and to lay claim to Lincoln.

The DNC refused to let the FBI take possesion of the Server then had an outsourced company, Crowd Strike, 'analyse' the server, then they wrote a report saying yep, it was Russians.

How does an impeachment vote followed by a very quick acquittal affect the left's base?

Cause that's what would happen if the Democrats managed to pass impeachment in the House.

The Democratic Establishment either has no idea, or has a good idea that it would depress their base tremendously. So, they want the issue but not the actual vote. They'll keep playing footsie with the idea without ever pulling the trigger, providing their base with a healthy case of blue balls just in time for the election.

I didn't say it was a good plan or that it wouldn't damage the Democrats - outside of the ones in the absolutely safe districts who are fundraising like all get-out off of it. It was a dumb idea but it was all swept up in the hysteria once the Golden Scalp Weasel won and they went through every possible thing to keep him out of office from trying to get electors to switch their votes, to celebrity PSAs, to getting Congress not to certify the election, and so on. I think it was just like the tide, just as inexorable, that they went to impeachment. And now that is gone, but the frenzied mob is still there wanting to burn a monster and they don't look like they would be real picky about definitions.

------

This a tough situation for them - they can appease the base with impeachment, and probably lose more voters in the middle. So obviously not a great outcome there.

But - they've got their NPC mob whipped into a bloodthirsty frenzy, shooting Congressmen, lighting themselves on fire, hitting people with bike locks, burning things, attacking Senators at their homes, smashing storefronts, stealing Congressional data, doxxing people, "milkshaking" them, faking hate crimes, jumping people for wearing MAGA hats, and on and on and on.

That mob will need to be sated, and I don't think mealy-mouthed half-measures will do the trick.

Hypothetical alt-history question. It's the 1840's here in the US. The southern states make it clear that they have no interest in expanding the institution of slavery to new territories or acquiring more territory into which slavery can be extended. Does the US eventually have a civil war?

Because it seems to me that the Left is behaving like the South. The South came to call slavery a positive benefit, they agitated for conquest to provide more territory, they wanted slaves in the territory already acquired, they wanted a resumption of the slave trade. The Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, all of these failed to placate southern slaveholders, who always wanted more and more.

Hadrian: in your alternate history, no. No civil war. The expansion of slavery into the territories, or south into Mexico, was what made slavery into a crisis.

HOWEVER, viewing people as portable property, there would be nothing stopping slave owners from transporting their slaves to new homes in California or Oregon or anywhere else.

So we're back to human nature and the idea of the black man not being a man....but property.

Yeah, they had no problem moving people around in Bosnia. When it comes time, the "correct" people (I won't use the term right, iykwimaiktyd) will do what they think is necessary.

So we basically have a few choices. Roll the dice on trying to fix the problems we have with a CoS, Divorce, or CW2. Maybe keep on doing what we are doing know, with conservatives and Normals being stomped down by corporate America (really People Soft? have they not heard of tortious interference?) but I think cold CW leads to CW2.

It'll mean a lot of dead on all sides. I have read how some of the crazier leftist groups actually send some of their folks overseas and get them involved in local wars. I wish I could remember where, I'd post it. But we may laugh at Antifa, but they are dead serious, the same way the Brown Shirts were almost a century!! ago. 253 The infants on Yahoo were trying to mock her. Her one outfit they claimed looked like a flight attendant (it looked very stylish to me) and the white outfit and hat they were wondering if she realized that she looked like Eliza Doolittle. So typical of the brainless twats at Yahoo

Ahem. Per alexthediminutive, it's "even a blink squirrel fucks a pumpkin twice a day".

[Scribbles furiously] So the squirrel is blinking because it humped a pumpkin twice that day?

255 Robert Conquest credited SF Cohen in his seminal book The Great Terror. No idea why, but there it is.

MSNBC used to invite Cohen's husband, Katrina van USSR, to help the hosts of various shows run America down - until Obama's Ukraine adventurism put a stop to it

256 118 Russia isn't interested in that anymore, but the seeds the Soviets
left have borne their evil fruit, here and in Europe, and we have to
deal with them like the vermin they are...

They are America's Public Enemy Number One.

They need to be identified and treated as such. They call themselves "Progressives." In reality, they are Global Socialists who live here in the US. They are opposed to every single moral and legal principle the Founders laid out in the Constitution and their stated goal is to destroy our nation from within and install their version of Socialism in its place. Whenever you hear the term "progressive values," know that you're hearing your enemy.

George Soros is the primary financial source to keep these traitors running.

Soros is an out and out enemy of America. Why is that evil loser still alive?

258 "Hypothetical alt-history question. It's the 1840's here in the US. The
southern states make it clear that they have no interest in expanding
the institution of slavery to new territories or acquiring more
territory into which slavery can be extended. Does the US eventually
have a civil war?"
Slave holders were well aware of the contradiction between slavery and the principles of the Declaration. The only way they could reconcile them was to declare that black people were somehow less than fully human and that their enslavement was a positive good for them. Having taken the position that slavery was a positive good, the South was compelled to push for its acceptance - anything less would mean accepting that it was somehow other than good. Ultimately, maintenance of the lie compelled the South into its catastrophic decision to secede.
So, as long as slavery existed among us, a war was inevitable. It was just a matter of when, and how.
