The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Horatio Alger is a punchline in modern-day America, where the trend is to decrease the amount of work required ...for pretty much all things...and to increase the leisure time possibilities. Work ethic is a dirty word, and work-life balance is the mantra.

But one of the predicates of American Exceptionalism is the assumption -- really, the requirement -- that hard work is the key. And it was, for a very long time. The marvel of America was that unique combination of hard work and drive and entrepreneurial spirit and raw intelligence.

If minority kids want to take over America by outworking us, then by all means; have at it! That's the kind of immigrant we want. Many of our ancestors were exactly that!

Minority Kids’ Spelling Bee Dominance Proves Racism Is Far Less Important Than Work Ethic

How did kids from South Asia—including Bangladesh, Pakistan, and especially India—become so dominant in the National Spelling Bee competition? Personal dedication, family commitment, cultural acceptance, and community support.
The problem of course is that the majority of the current immigrants (the illegal sort mostly, but also the legal variety) do not have the Horatio Alger stories imprinted upon them. Their story is more like, "I want welfare and food stamps and free medical care, and you OWE me all of that!"

It isn't enough to shut down the borders and stop illegal immigration. It is also incumbent upon our legislature to return to an immigration policy that welcomes productive members of society: people who will add to the economy rather than just take. Whether those people come from Ireland or Germany or India or Chad is immaterial. They need to have the raw materials for greatness within the context of traditional American Exceptionalism.

62 I've noticed, too, that what I always considered "normal", that we talk quite a bit about the "salt of the earth" types, the laborers and workers who do the hard jobs, those guys having lunch on the steel girders far above the city, the farmers covered in sweat and muck, that those people tend to be denigrated rather than praised.

Now maybe my impression is only that my parents never valued "class" above hard work and character (which sort of ended up meaning we weren't raised to be ambitious, just honest) and maybe people never praised the rough men with Dirty Jobs like I thought they did.

And I'd sort of thought that was actually a communist thing, too, except that there's not even praise for the working man from the left socialists, if there ever was.

But now the prospect of *labor* is mocked. Asking someone to push a broom is oppression. Talking about building work ethic in young people is mocked. (They should be focusing on school, not a job!) Kids working and contributing to the family isn't praised, it's portrayed as abuse. And people seem to want to decide for others what work is beneath them.

I don't think other countries should just become "farm teams" for the USA and Western Europe to take all the talented people from so they can make us better at the expense of the places they come from.

Spelling, grammar, and other language skills are a tool of the dominant culture to otherize black and brown bodies.

Encouraging migrant children to spell the way that the white patriarchy sees as "positive" and "valuable" is simply a fig leaf for encouraging internalized misogyny and racism at an early age when children are most impressionable.

Kos himself makes a rare appearance, to upbraid Biden as delusional. Then there is a reader poll asking if the Feds are doing enough to contain the spread of virulent right-wing terrorism.
When Dean is mentioned (near the bottom) it is in the Dana Millbank context of "Whatever it is that Trump did is worse than Watergate, because at least during Watergate Republican Senators-With-Consciences acted to unseat Nixon. Would not happen today, and not because PDJT is innocent of all wrongdoing, but because the Senate GOP is so rabidly Trumpist. Bet you didn't know that!

................

I've gotta disagree with you on that.

The south-of-the-border immigrants that come up here are very hard working individuals.

On these summer days, driving in to work, I see crews of landscapers cutting lawns and trimming trees.. all Hispanics.. they came here to work!

Yes.. they will take all the free shit they can grab.. and they have babies like rabbits, who all glom on to social services like schools and medical in the ER.

They are still a net drain on our society, and we really don't need that many low-level, uneducated workers.. so build the wall..

But they do come here to work.. and work hard they do.

147 Many lower class Mexicans work pretty hard, for less. But a big part of their "pay" is they get to escape Mexico, AND they can get subsidized by various forms of US welfare. The US black (I'm told by owner class from S Louisiana) don't have those same incentives, and many have that more militant attitude to boot.

But the heritage the hard working Mexicans bring (the ones not human/drug trafficking) includes ... lots of heavy drinking, laws don't mean much, accepting government is corrupt (so take what you can get from them), no alliance with US, we are just their corrupt/racist rich neighbor that deserves to be fleeced.

The Mexican government itself encourages them to speak Spanish, to keep allegiance to Mexico, drain the US of the profits to supprot their narco state, even offering pamphlets on what lies to tell to gain access to all the "free stuff" (enabling them to send more in remittances to support the narco state homeland).

158 I've gotta disagree with you on that.

No one's upward mobility depends on knowing the spelling to these words (or really even knowing these words exist). If you used ,most of these words in everyday speech, you'd be as likely to provoke confusion, or even a negative reaction (as putting on airs), as a positive one.

298 273 for a foreigner, something like spelling is easier than the rest of the language ... or more importantly ... learning our culture and values, heritage and constitution.

Asians, or almost any other country, seem to have more national pride than (the left) half of Americans. Chinese come here and stay loyal to China, even to the point of stealing our tech from within.

Some from around the globe, want to leave their oppressive state, and would make great Americans ... BUT our education system doesn't raise them up to appreciate the founding principals ... rather they are taught to disdain them. Lamp of Lady Liberty ... shining the way for the world, being extinguished by a corrupt globalist elite.

The point of spelling bees is not to get all the kids to be able to spell "antidisestablishmentarianism", but to get them comfortable with spelling all the common words in daily use, plus all the less-common, but still vitally-important words you need to know in order to be educated.

It's kind of hard to look up a word in the dictionary if you don't know how to spell it.

334 286 I guess I can try the Audi, Lexus, BMW and Acura sedan options but it's going to get pricey in a hurry.

Audi: beautifully made, often design choices that make them very difficult to service (case in point: https://tinyurl.com/hp39y6u) they never use one part when three will do the job.

Lexus: I have a love/hate relationship with these, some are so ugly (RX) that I cross the street or turn around to avoid looking at them, the little IS isn't bad, some Lexes have weird ergonomics or just don't quite feel right. Funny that the first-generation ES300 (FWD Camry with all the headroom removed) seems to last forever, we have a busload of them around the neighborhood mostly on their fourth or fifth owners.

BMW: Used to be great, went through a 'wilderness period' a few years back with lots of brittle cooling system parts and lousy interior designs, the interiors are better now but I haven't looked at the durability of new ones lately. I have a 20-year-old 5-series and they've been jacking up the parts prices mercilessly, what was once a $40 piece of plastic is now $300.

Acura: They're mostly ugly, they're mostly wrong-wheel drive, buy an Accord instead.

352 A huge difference between kids from South Asia, Asia and other areas is the parents. The parents WANT their kids to do well, and they emphasize excellence in academics. They practice with their kids. They read with their kids. They do math with their kids. They focus on their kids doing well, because that is how you succeed.

Posted by: Moki at June 11, 2019 11:08 AM (mFoNl)

All this is true, as far as it goes. But there is another cultural factor that frankly, the Asians (regardless of which part of Asia they come from) are loath to talk about. Yes, the parents of these kids push them to work hard, study hard and all that, true, which is why they are often successful (and make no mistake, it is NOT because they are somehow inherently more intelligent than most; I've worked with too many of them over the years to fall for that bullshit; it's all about the work/study ethic, nothing more). But if for whatever reason the kid is disinclined to comply with these directives, then Mom and Dad will not hesitate to beat the living crap out of that kid until he/she complies. Oh yes, there is a little matter of direct discipline involved in this too...

that also seems sub-optimal...

364 So based on the previous thread, Victoria/Vancouver would be a great place to spend 7+ days next April/May with the spouse? She's never been out that way. I was in Seattle for a few days about 5 years ago and it was sunny the whole time. Spent '72-74 there as a kid and memories are grey or Mt Rainier hovering in the distance.

Grew up in Vancouver. It is very green there, because it rains a lot. When it's not raining, it's very nice. If you can't see the mountains, it's raining. If you can see the mountains, it's going to rain.

Victoria is about half as rainy as Vancouver. The Gulf islands, drier still. The car ferries have become very expensive.

Victoria is very nice, very pretty and touristy. Unless it's cold and rainy, like when I went.

If the weather's nice, it's great; though April and May can't promise good weather.

7 days MIGHT be a bit much, it's not that big a town.

368 "If minority kids want to take over America by outworking us, then by all means; have at it! "

What the fuck is this?

369 @34

"A huge difference between kids from South Asia, Asia and other areas is the parents."

That's racist.

Posted by: Rollory at June 11, 2019 01:17 PM (6qUAn)

370 352 A huge difference between kids from South Asia, Asia and other areas is the parents.

I'm in Silicon Valley where there is a high population of successful Indians. They push their kids and they push them hard. Part of it is that, yes, they do want them to succeed like they did. But the ugly part is that they also use their kids as a status symbol, putting them into the most prestigious schools and pushing them to be the top in their class. There is a sub-culture here that is extremely vain, very much like we've seen in the USC Hollywood scandal, where social status is measured by your job title, the home(s) you own, the cars you drive, and the academic status of your children.

371 138 It's pronounced "zee" not "zed".

"E-Z" as shorthand for "easy" doesn't work in Canada, but they use it anyway. Goddamn cultural appropriation, I tell you!

372 So ten years or so ago, I was involved in the local spelling bee. The winners from each participating school faced off for the privilege of moving ahead to the next level of competition.
We sat there for round after round as contestants were slowly eliminated. Then, because the spellers were so talented, the judges ran out of words from the published list of obscure words. So they had to go to a secondary list of more common English words. Once they switched to normal words, the spellers started dropping like flies. They couldn't spell. They could only parrot back the spellings of obscure words they had memorized.
Needless to say, I was disillusioned with the whole spelling bee process.
