The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

30 years ago the Tienanmen Square protests began, and were promptly and brutally quashed by the Chinese government. I remember watching the coverage and chatting with an 85-year old woman who despaired for the people of China. In my youthful hubris I reassured her that the Chinese may not win the battle, but they will win the war for freedom.

And what a fool I was. China is a perfect counter-example of American Exceptionalism. We wanted freedom, and we weren't bought off by TVs and cell phones and high-rise apartments. The Chinese desire for some autonomy and liberty has been subsumed by a rapid and calculated growth in the middle class, and it is clear what is valued more by Chinese society.

It remains to be seen what will happen in China; they have huge problems, including demographic ones that are stark. Can the Chinese people learn to love freedom when the entire apparatus of their government is fixated on controlling every bit of their lives? I hope so, but I don't think so!

The 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution doesn't seem so anachronistic in the context of Tienanmen Square. I hope that were something like that to happen in America, the result would be different.

I remember reading something about how the Pentagon had gamed out trying to put down a popular rebellion of some sort within the US. There are simply too many guns and too much ammo in private hands to guarantee any sort of victory by the government in an action like that.

An old family friend was a captain in the artillery in Korea. He commanded some quad-50-cal half-tracks, which they used against Chinese troops.

He said it was unbelievably brutal, and the Chinese were shooting back.

It didn't used to be that way. Needless government interference into the economy has skewed things in ways even I, with my wild-assed imagination, couldn't even think of. IIRC, someone did a study of the cost of regulatory compliance and it was in the trillions of dollars every year, so naturally that story got the Progda coverage, with a pillow until it didn't move.

There's also an awful lot of greed in corporate boardrooms. I'm not against making money, but when you're being paid millions per year, there's some room to bring down payroll costs, which are always the biggest expense for any business. There is such a thing as pricing yourself out of a market.

Of course, if free-market economics was being taught, they'd know that. We'd be a lot more competitive in the global marketplace with just some relatively minor adjustments. PDT understands this well, as our booming economy proves.

Maria gave him the example of bicycles being made in China and what will the cost if tariff's continue. He made sure to tell her that Walmart now has a US bicycle manufacturer as a supplier, LOL. The answer for China was that a kid's $69 bike would cost just under $100.

Maybe someone would buy the US bike, LOL.

He also had some extremely enlightening responses to Bernie's Sanders cries of unionization, Walmart is evil. etc. He said that Walmart's goal is to retain employees, promoting them etc. They have 200 little "universities" around the country that employees can attend to learn marketing, purchasing, business etc. They receive $1 a day tuition for outside university classes( I kind of missed how that works) in addition to the millions of dollars of scholarships Walmart awards to employees. Employees also like the performance bonuses they are eligible for, which of course Bernie wants to do away with in exchange for everyone receiving the same pay, like good little communists.

By the way, the CEO began his career at Walmart when he was 17 as a stockboy.

The biggest key to carrier operations is NOT the hardware. Its the personnel and infrastructure to run the flight deck.

India has a HUGE advantage in that they can come and study US carriers, and adapt our 97 Years of Carrier experience to something they can use.

I *think* Vikrant is still under construction, but it might be done, I don't know.

They do have the Vikramaditya (Kiev class), for sure.

The Chinese have the old Varyag (Kuznetsov). They bought some other ones for research, but they aren't seaworthy.

But China is actually laying the keel on a large, modern carrier as we speak. IIRC, it'll be something like 90 ktons. Say what you will about their political system, they've been smart. They bought an old Russian ship, started training their pilots on it, and built another with improvements, which wouldn't have been hard. Now they're taking what they've learned a building a modern ship, probably with EMALS. They'll certainly have lots of problems, but this is a serious effort, and they are technically competent.

Full on IEDs are probably the most effective. If memory serves, the only hard-kills of American M1 Abrams MBTs have been with large IEDs, and they're few and far between, I think the number is less than 5.

But Russian and Chinese tanks are often much different, with the only heavy armor being on the front. The T72 is notorious for having super thin side armor, a 20mm Bushmaster will easily punch through at around 2k meters.

I think you got it in one. I have been to China a couple of times. That does not make me an expert in any way shapr or form.
This guy, Gordon Chang, is always predicting that "this time!" China will collapse or something.

I think it's all rather unlikely. China will remain what it is, and will get somewhat more wealthy and tolerable to a lot their people.
Everybody that wants to work can work, and everybody has enough to eat. Compare that with India, which is a mess.
Democracy and "liberty" are messy, as we all know. A lot of rich and powerful people in the US would like to trim it around the corners to make is better for them. Not so messy and more predictable, and keep the peasants and kulaks in place, serving their corporatist masters.

Just like China.

I am not optimistic at all for either China or the US.

We're the only Navy who does Blue Water replenishment as a normal operation. We train all the damn time to be able to do it.

Doing more than one ship at a time is a recipe for disaster. The venturi effect that happens between two ships traveling through the water is a major problem (the curve of the hulls acts like wings, pulling the ships towards each other).

Add another ship, or TWO? Uh, no. Maybe once as an exercise, but not sustainable for combat ops.

Plus, the AOR would not have enough CREW to move cargo from the Hold to staging areas for three ships at once.

And trust me, as someone who was ON a US Destroyer that ran into a Supply ship doing a resupply, the results are pretty catastrophic.
