Booming -- and Tightening -- Job Market Has Predictable Effect: Workers Are Getting Their First Legitimate Raises in Decades

The right has a split between people who think that worker's wages should be driven down as low as possible, forever, using off-shoring for plants that can be moved, and imported cheaper laborers for those that can't be moved, and people who think that maybe conservatism does include the idea of workers increasing in prosperity as well.

And some of us think that driving down workers' wages forever is politically dangerous and may lead to socialism. You can't frustrate people forever without them taking action, even if it is counterproductive.

But whatever, invade the world, invite the world, the only thing that conservatism should care about is the welfare of corporations, even as more and more corporations are now Citizens of the World not even owing a nominal allegiance to the United States.

US employers are stepping on the accelerator -- and that's lifting average salaries and fueling record raises across many sectors. For the typical American worker, pay increases could soon surge past 4 percent or 5 percent for the year, according to labor experts.
By any stretch, the number crunchers say, it's a big jump to catch up on the anemic salary growth over the past 10 years, thanks to the law of supply and demand and a booming economy. Job openings recently surpassed the number of unemployed by 1.3 million. And it's starting to trigger bottlenecks.

Average hourly earnings in the private sector have risen by 3.2 percent in the past year. By Frick's account, while global forces such as outsourcing could still hold back wage increases, by as early as next year the US could potentially see wages rise an average of 4.5 percent -- similar to the peak of the 2000s' expansion -- or even as much as 5.5 percent, as happened at the peak of the 1990 to 2001 expansion.
Robert Johnson, chairman and CEO at Economic Index Associates, is convinced the US economy will see strong wage growth, possibly north of 4 percent over the coming months and next few years. Johnson attributes this to productivity gains and labor shortages.

Which means in real terms, the US Worker has been on the short end.

OH, and if you figure inflation like they did in the 90's? ie, real inflation? We are north of 5% per year still.

My work (a church) has been saying we got a raise in January.

What we really got was a one time bonus calculated as X percent of our BASE pay the prior year. After not getting any kind of raise the prior two years. So it was almost enough to keep up with official inflation for the prior year in real terms.

If my hourly pay didn't go up, you didn't give me a raise. Try being a little more honest, mmmk?

FIRST: it did not say that "Corporations are people", what it did was not a constant and basic assumption in American Law and English Common Law before that, which has been legally acknowledged for over 400 years now in the English Speaking world - Corporations are *treated* as persons under the law, meaning that they have the same protections from Government as persons do, under the law. It is a limitation on Government power, it always has been.

Systems where Corporations are NOT treated as persons under the law are the systems set up by Stalin, Mussolini, and Hitler. Under those systems, the Government can commandeer assets and direct actions to be taken simply because they order it, and with no other legal justification. Because those entities have no rights under the law.

The entire political class is desperate to keep the stock market booming. Everyone's net worth is wholly dependent on the market now whether they realize it or not. Not just retirement savings, but all forms of wealth are predicated on it. All asset value collapses if the stock market does because of how high finance has evolved. 166 Catch 22. I've watch the first two of six episodes.

First, the good news. It has a good, authentic look, including the combat scenes (although they often seem to fly awfully low). And, I think, the soundtrack is great, mostly the big band swing that those guys actually listen to.

The not so good news, it just doesn't capture the madcap chaos of the book and, largely, of the Alan Arkin film. One problem, is the structure. Part of the appeal of the novel, and it's one of my all time favorite novels, is the barely controlled chaos. Not only does the novel start in the middle and veer wildly forward and backward in time, often a paragraph would start talking about one thing and end up talking about another. (The Arkin movie started at the end then jumped around throughout Yossarian's tour.) This series starts at the beginning (stateside training) and, so far anyway, proceeds chronologically. That increases comprehension of the story arc but lacks the chaotic frenzy of the original. Similarly, Arkin played Yossarian as a rather hangdog, increasingly desperate guy. This Yossarian is a pretty boy, frat boy type known as "Yo-Yo". Again the frantic desperation is missing. I should also mention this Major Major Major Major can't hold a candle to Bob Newhart. Finally, this series is three times the length of the Arkin movie and yet doesn't seem to add much.

In short, this series turns the madcap, slapstick, dark terror comedy of the original into a much more conventional, often maudlin and sentimental, dramedy.

Incidentally, the book The Bridgebusters by Thomas McKelvie Cleaver tells the true story of author Joseph Heller's service. I was very surprised to learn that much of the most unbelievable parts of Catch 22 were true.

My point was that I didn't understand why there would be people here who would want their fellow countrymen to suffer for no reason. Why would anybody be against their neighbors having a good standard of living? How would they feel if somebody did to them what they propose happen to the rest of us?
And the government is directly to blame, particularly BJ Cliton's administration, for the millions of unemployed Americans in the wake of the abortion of NAFTA. Ol' Slow Joe Biden voted for that POS. I hope PDT reminds everyone of that at every campaign stop in the runup to '020.

Even Adam Smith argued for protectionism when it came to critical industries.

You can also argue from more of a Taleb angle: that a diverse economy, actual diversity which reduces idiosyncratic risk, makes you less fragile. When your economy is highly specialized, and reliant on a massively interconnected global trade network, you're a lot more exposed to black swans that create havoc.

I'm fully aware of what corporations are. I helped a guy start a food truck business last week. He formed a corporation. The guy cutting my lawn right now also formed a corporation.

The freedom of the press was not meant for corporations or the New York Times. It was meant for you and me.
My position appears to be the same as Ace's in his post. It seems to me the Leftist position is that the rights of a group (or collective) is equal to an individual's God given rights. I disagree.

In that event it's also likely to be vital to the rival as well. So (if possible/practical after achieving self sufficiency) it also makes sense to take a run at their comparative advantage and try to force them out of profitability in that industry, even if it means running at a loss for some time.

It's vital to cover your own contingencies, and it's WONDERFUL if you can prevent them from meeting their own needs, though that part isn't always realistic.

My now manager was telling me after the first couple of minutes that I was already head and shoulders above the other people he was interviewing because I was asking questions, writing things down and had gotten a haircut. For a management position- and not fast food!

Well, there's generally two answers. The first, cynical answer, is because when buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first thing that will be bought and sold are legislators. Thus has it always been, thus shall it ever be.

But less cynically, it's because we (using the Royal We now) have determined that it's beneficial for our society to do these things. And those protections will (and should) stay in place until such time as that calculus changes.

Which is why I'm a nationalist first, and a free-market 'capitalist' long afterward. Nation first; I believe free-markets and free people make for a better nation. But the day our "corporate citizens" decide that our nation can be sacrificed for the good of their profit margins and shareholder value, then fuck them and their privileged legal status.

We were saddled with all the state and federal regulatons of the big boys, including tax collection, benefits, HR regs (yeah, including the trannys), and much, much more. As far as employees go, most are good and some are not, but precious few of them had any idea of the regulations imposed on corporations. Wages were dictated by the market; we were in a small town. If someone (and there were more than a few) wanted the wages paid in NYC, well then, move to NYC. Not all corporations are evil.

Ok last post on the topic. Ace's post seems to be lamenting the "corporations are people" concept which comes from the SCOTUS ruling that corps have the same freedom of speech as people. The case was about spending on a political campaign and the decision was essentially that money equals speech.

The reason I've asked so many times why the corp was necessary in the first place was for the obvious answer: those people thought they'd found a loophole to a restriction that was placed on their own individual spending (speech). Instead of fighting for their individual right and the unconstituional limit placed on it they chose a loophole end-run instead. And here we are, defending the absurd notion that corporations are people because of it.

As I said in an earlier post, Buckley vs. Valeo, 1976. Money is Speech, meaning the right to Free Political Speech means the right to Spend Money on Political Speech.

In a mass media world, politically effective speech (such as making a film, the issue in the Citizens United case) takes far more money than any individual will have (except for the billionaires) So, banding together in groups is the ONLY way in today's society that individuals can effectively exercise their Rights to Free Political Speech under the Constitution. That's the heart of Citizens United.

To say otherwise is to create the rule that ONLY Billionaires have the right to effective Political Speech in this country. (Because they can spend unlimited amounts of their own money without anyone else's help) Does anyone think that would be a result we want?

BUT in Citizens United, they were NOT supporting any candidate - and they were NOT donating time and advertising to any candidate. The Citizens United group made an movie/ad that said, basically, "The Clintons Are Corrupt! Don't Vote for them! We'll support ANYONE who opposes the Clinton's!"

Naturally, Hillary wanted that banned completely. The Citizens United Decision held that since this was pure issue advocacy and did not involve a contribution in kind to any particular candidate, there was no appearance of corruption and the restriction allowed in Buckley vs Valeo did not apply.

Pure Issue Advocacy may not be regulated by the Government. No matter who does it.

Ok last post on the topic. Ace's post seems to be lamenting the "corporations are people" concept which comes from the SCOTUS ruling that corps have the same freedom of speech as people. The case was about spending on a political campaign and the decision was essentially that money equals speech.

The reason I've asked so many times why the corp was necessary in the first place was for the obvious answer: those people thought they'd found a loophole to a restriction that was placed on their own individual spending (speech). Instead of fighting for their individual right and the unconstituional limit placed on it they chose a loophole end-run instead. And here we are, defending the absurd notion that corporations are people because of it.

The principle that corporations are considered "people" under the law is not absurd, but a logical extension of the idea of individual rights as enumerated in the Constitution. Regardless of why they formed a corporation, they are and should be able to exercise the same rights as a corporation as they did as individuals.

The sudden disdain for that principle on the Right is entirely due to emotionalism and the fact that certain for-profit corporations are are proving to be politically hostile. It is just another manifestation of the mob mentality that shows itself here from time to time, and certainly not based either on good logic or well-founded principles.

One can be all in favor of breaking up tech monopolies like Google without adopting the rhetoric and emotional idiocy of the Left regarding basic constitutional principles.

487 There is a limit to how far you can drive the price of goods down by obtaining them externally, as ultimately in order to buy goods, people have to work. I mean, in a socialist-ish paradise where everyone got a $1M credit each year to spend as they liked on goods from around the world so no one had to work, that money wouldn't buy a bag of popcorn because money is basically an IOU for the value you created. If we created no value, people receiving our money wouldn't be able to exchange it for the value we created, either, thus it would have no value itself.
