Booming -- and Tightening -- Job Market Has Predictable Effect: Workers Are Getting Their First Legitimate Raises in Decades

Suppy/demand -- how does it work?

The right has a split between people who think that worker's wages should be driven down as low as possible, forever, using off-shoring for plants that can be moved, and imported cheaper laborers for those that can't be moved, and people who think that maybe conservatism does include the idea of workers increasing in prosperity as well.

And some of us think that driving down workers' wages forever is politically dangerous and may lead to socialism. You can't frustrate people forever without them taking action, even if it is counterproductive.

But whatever, invade the world, invite the world, the only thing that conservatism should care about is the welfare of corporations, even as more and more corporations are now Citizens of the World not even owing a nominal allegiance to the United States.

US employers are stepping on the accelerator -- and that's lifting average salaries and fueling record raises across many sectors. For the typical American worker, pay increases could soon surge past 4 percent or 5 percent for the year, according to labor experts.

By any stretch, the number crunchers say, it's a big jump to catch up on the anemic salary growth over the past 10 years, thanks to the law of supply and demand and a booming economy. Job openings recently surpassed the number of unemployed by 1.3 million. And it's starting to trigger bottlenecks.

...

Average hourly earnings in the private sector have risen by 3.2 percent in the past year. By Frick's account, while global forces such as outsourcing could still hold back wage increases, by as early as next year the US could potentially see wages rise an average of 4.5 percent -- similar to the peak of the 2000s' expansion -- or even as much as 5.5 percent, as happened at the peak of the 1990 to 2001 expansion.

Robert Johnson, chairman and CEO at Economic Index Associates, is convinced the US economy will see strong wage growth, possibly north of 4 percent over the coming months and next few years. Johnson attributes this to productivity gains and labor shortages.

14 The dirty little secret?

We have been loosing on the wage front for years.

Government sanctioned targets for inflation have been larger than salary gains, for YEARS.

Which means in real terms, the US Worker has been on the short end.

OH, and if you figure inflation like they did in the 90's? ie, real inflation? We are north of 5% per year still.

So even a 4.5% increase in wages, is loosing.

My work (a church) has been saying we got a raise in January.

What we really got was a one time bonus calculated as X percent of our BASE pay the prior year. After not getting any kind of raise the prior two years. So it was almost enough to keep up with official inflation for the prior year in real terms.

If my hourly pay didn't go up, you didn't give me a raise. Try being a little more honest, mmmk?

I support capitalism and free markets, but you have to be an idiot not to see a few steps beyond "pure capitalism" that there will be severe political consequences if you allow all the jobs to move overseas and immigrants to come here in a race to the bottom.

Sure, you can make a case that's "small government", but be prepared for the country to look like Venezuela in a single generation. But I guess it's all about maximizing wealth like a parasite, who cares about the host.

94 The right has a split between people who think that worker's wages
should be driven down as low as possible, forever, using off-shoring for
plants that can be moved, and imported cheaper laborers for those that
can't be moved, and people who think that maybe conservatism does
include the idea of workers increasing in prosperity as well.

Why the animosity towards fellow Americans having a good standard of living? I don't get that at all.

People can have whatever opinion on trade unions that they want, but the simple fact is that the "Management Is The Enemy" mindset isn't entirely manufactured by Commies. I have seen and known and worked with companies whose attitude toward their workforce was absolute contempt, who would cut every corner and screw their people as far as they possibly could, to get that extra dollar out of them.

And it's not simply a matter of "Go get another job", a lot of the time. Okay. Where? Can you afford to not work? Is the next place any better? What are your skills and what is the local demand? The free market doesn't solve all these problems cleanly like the Shapiros of the world like to think.

If you pay no taxes or collect a federal check in any form, no vote for you, except for those in uniform and on active duty.

152 It has always amazed me how badly people have explained the Citizens United Decsion has been:

FIRST: it did not say that "Corporations are people", what it did was not a constant and basic assumption in American Law and English Common Law before that, which has been legally acknowledged for over 400 years now in the English Speaking world - Corporations are *treated* as persons under the law, meaning that they have the same protections from Government as persons do, under the law. It is a limitation on Government power, it always has been.

Systems where Corporations are NOT treated as persons under the law are the systems set up by Stalin, Mussolini, and Hitler. Under those systems, the Government can commandeer assets and direct actions to be taken simply because they order it, and with no other legal justification. Because those entities have no rights under the law.

Why hide behind a corporation when the individual already has the right?
Posted by: Brian in New Orleans at May 21, 2019 08:35 PM (rnXGe)

For me its more of what a Right is.

Rights are natural or God Given.

I don't see any corporations in either Nature, or Holy writ, so just where to those RIGHTS come into play?

166 Catch 22. I've watch the first two of six episodes.

First, the good news. It has a good, authentic look, including the combat scenes (although they often seem to fly awfully low). And, I think, the soundtrack is great, mostly the big band swing that those guys actually listen to.

The not so good news, it just doesn't capture the madcap chaos of the book and, largely, of the Alan Arkin film. One problem, is the structure. Part of the appeal of the novel, and it's one of my all time favorite novels, is the barely controlled chaos. Not only does the novel start in the middle and veer wildly forward and backward in time, often a paragraph would start talking about one thing and end up talking about another. (The Arkin movie started at the end then jumped around throughout Yossarian's tour.) This series starts at the beginning (stateside training) and, so far anyway, proceeds chronologically. That increases comprehension of the story arc but lacks the chaotic frenzy of the original. Similarly, Arkin played Yossarian as a rather hangdog, increasingly desperate guy. This Yossarian is a pretty boy, frat boy type known as "Yo-Yo". Again the frantic desperation is missing. I should also mention this Major Major Major Major can't hold a candle to Bob Newhart. Finally, this series is three times the length of the Arkin movie and yet doesn't seem to add much.

In short, this series turns the madcap, slapstick, dark terror comedy of the original into a much more conventional, often maudlin and sentimental, dramedy.

Incidentally, the book The Bridgebusters by Thomas McKelvie Cleaver tells the true story of author Joseph Heller's service. I was very surprised to learn that much of the most unbelievable parts of Catch 22 were true.

168 People can have whatever opinion on trade unions that they want, but the
simple fact is that the "Management Is The Enemy" mindset isn't
entirely manufactured by Commies. I have seen and known and worked with
companies whose attitude toward their workforce was absolute contempt,
who would cut every corner and screw their people as far as they
possibly could, to get that extra dollar out of them.

That wasn't the point I was trying to make in that comment. I've never worked in a union state, but I have worked for a few companies who viewed their employees as disposable. Usually, they don't last very long once word gets around. That's when having a union is handy, but that's not easy in a right-to-work state like down here and in Alabama.

My point was that I didn't understand why there would be people here who would want their fellow countrymen to suffer for no reason. Why would anybody be against their neighbors having a good standard of living? How would they feel if somebody did to them what they propose happen to the rest of us?
And the government is directly to blame, particularly BJ Cliton's administration, for the millions of unemployed Americans in the wake of the abortion of NAFTA. Ol' Slow Joe Biden voted for that POS. I hope PDT reminds everyone of that at every campaign stop in the runup to '020.

182 But that was just the very first step of the Citizens United decision. The next step was to revisit Buckley vs Valeo (1976), which held that Money was Speech, and therefore Spending for one's political ideas was to be protected, just as all political speech was to be protected. Remember, this decision was on the books for 40 years and nobody, left or right, democrat or republican, complained or thought it was a bad decision.

So: Supreme Court Precedent, 1976 - Political Money is Political Speech, protected by the 1st Amendment.

I'd also point out that newspapers, magazines, television broadcasters, loathed as they are here, are all examples of corporations and freedom of the press is an explicit right. Blogs and blogging platforms, too. AoS, maybe? Mee dot nu?

Anyway, corporations also own property (like people!) which is really handy when your small business goes into bankruptcy and all of its assets are seized but your personal assets remain untouched.

Even Adam Smith argued for protectionism when it came to critical industries.

You can also argue from more of a Taleb angle: that a diverse economy, actual diversity which reduces idiosyncratic risk, makes you less fragile. When your economy is highly specialized, and reliant on a massively interconnected global trade network, you're a lot more exposed to black swans that create havoc.

corporations and freedom of the press is an explicit right. Blogs and

really handy when your small business goes into bankruptcy and all of
its assets are seized but your personal assets remain untouched.

I'm fully aware of what corporations are. I helped a guy start a food truck business last week. He formed a corporation. The guy cutting my lawn right now also formed a corporation.

The freedom of the press was not meant for corporations or the New York Times. It was meant for you and me.
My position appears to be the same as Ace's in his post. It seems to me the Leftist position is that the rights of a group (or collective) is equal to an individual's God given rights. I disagree.

Absolutely.

In that event it's also likely to be vital to the rival as well. So (if possible/practical after achieving self sufficiency) it also makes sense to take a run at their comparative advantage and try to force them out of profitability in that industry, even if it means running at a loss for some time.

It's vital to cover your own contingencies, and it's WONDERFUL if you can prevent them from meeting their own needs, though that part isn't always realistic.

267 The whole "corporations are persons" thing is a crock. The real issue is whether people lose their rights when they act together. Clearly, I have a right, as articulated by the First Amendment, to purchase an ad in a newspaper to advocate my political position, and so do you. We don't lose that right if we choose to pool our resources and work together - yet that is exactly what the Left is saying. Or rather, the Left says that you can pool your resources and speak out - but only if you take a position of which we approve.
Also ... can we finally drop the notion that there is something called "the Right" in this country? There is a Left, which has a coherent political philosophy, albeit one that is evil; and there's the rest of us, who, for one reason or another, oppose the Left's totalitarian ambitions. Any political movement that runs the spectrum from ultramontanist Catholics to acolytes of Ayn Rand can hardly be said to be coherent. As a Catholic and a small-government republican, I may accept the Chamber of Commerce types as allies on certain narrowly defined issues, but they are hardly part of the same political movement that I am. Left and anti-Left: that's American politics today.

It's flavor is clearly superior to Duke's, and pulls barely ahead of Hellman's and it's Blue Ribbon doppelganger.

While I'll readily admit that the creamy smoothness of Duke's is an attraction, what it's not is flavor.

And this is where the Kroger's store brand stands above both. It has just the perfect touch of citrus tanginess, just a bit more than Hellman's, and far better than the "blah" that is Duke's, on the palate.

Ben Had, Insom... give the Kroger's a try. I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised!

306 I think the point, which is hardly earth-shattering, is that corporations are like people in some respects, but not like them in others.

Just as children are like adults in some respects - killing one, however justified (kidding here) is illegal, whereas children cannot vote and adults can.

The fact that one entity shares some rights with other entities does not imply that all entities shares ALL rights.

But surely that was obvious.

313 If you think about it, Democrats in the Presidency typically results in a recession and higher taxes with lower wages or even job loss.

The inverse is typically true with Republicans in the Oval Office.

Bill Clinton lucking into a technology revolution aside, I've seen this play out over and over in my life.

So why in God's name do people vote Democrat? Well, glad you asked. The people that vote D are typically in government jobs (can't be fired), education (same when tenured), unemployed and don't give a crap, in college and don't see a job as necessary and more I can't think of.

Then there is always the people that have it good for 4 or 8 years and grow complacent and forget about what Democrats do to the economy.

There is always the war angle. People wanting out of a war so they dump the President they think is responsible.

Posted by: Brian in New Orleans at May 21, 2019 08:48 PM (rnXGe)"

The answer is actually fairly simple, and obvious. People who are members of those corporations already have the right to vote, and so adding an additional vote would actually be doubling, and absurd result.

People don't understand the concept of "Rights" under the Constitution - they are NOT "Things the government grants", as the Left thinks. They are "Things the Government cannot mess with, because we do not grant the government that power."

Rights under the Constitution are a LIMITATION on Government Power. That is virtually unique to the American System of Government, and is why it makes perfect sense, when you understand what "Rights" are, for corporate entities to have those same protections.

342 Why do we give corporations legal protections?
Why do we subsidize marriage?
Why do we do any of the myriad things as government policy?

Well, there's generally two answers. The first, cynical answer, is because when buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first thing that will be bought and sold are legislators. Thus has it always been, thus shall it ever be.

But less cynically, it's because we (using the Royal We now) have determined that it's beneficial for our society to do these things. And those protections will (and should) stay in place until such time as that calculus changes.

Which is why I'm a nationalist first, and a free-market 'capitalist' long afterward. Nation first; I believe free-markets and free people make for a better nation. But the day our "corporate citizens" decide that our nation can be sacrificed for the good of their profit margins and shareholder value, then fuck them and their privileged legal status.

As far as employees go, most are good and some are not, but precious few of them had any idea of the regulations imposed on corporations. Wages were dictated by the market; we were in a small town. If someone (and there were more than a few) wanted the wages paid in NYC, well then, move to NYC. Not all corporations are evil.

Ok last post on the topic. Ace's post seems to be lamenting the "corporations are people" concept which comes from the SCOTUS ruling that corps have the same freedom of speech as people. The case was about spending on a political campaign and the decision was essentially that money equals speech.

The reason I've asked so many times why the corp was necessary in the first place was for the obvious answer: those people thought they'd found a loophole to a restriction that was placed on their own individual spending (speech). Instead of fighting for their individual right and the unconstituional limit placed on it they chose a loophole end-run instead. And here we are, defending the absurd notion that corporations are people because of it.

Posted by: Brian in New Orleans at May 21, 2019 09:09 PM (rnXGe)

As I said in an earlier post, Buckley vs. Valeo, 1976. Money is Speech, meaning the right to Free Political Speech means the right to Spend Money on Political Speech.

In a mass media world, politically effective speech (such as making a film, the issue in the Citizens United case) takes far more money than any individual will have (except for the billionaires) So, banding together in groups is the ONLY way in today's society that individuals can effectively exercise their Rights to Free Political Speech under the Constitution. That's the heart of Citizens United.

To say otherwise is to create the rule that ONLY Billionaires have the right to effective Political Speech in this country. (Because they can spend unlimited amounts of their own money without anyone else's help) Does anyone think that would be a result we want?

392 There was one more aspect of Buckley vs Valeo that Citizens United expanded on. Buckley vs. Valeo held that restrictions on political donations to candidates could be allowed, because of the public interest in preventing the appearance of corruption.

BUT in Citizens United, they were NOT supporting any candidate - and they were NOT donating time and advertising to any candidate. The Citizens United group made an movie/ad that said, basically, "The Clintons Are Corrupt! Don't Vote for them! We'll support ANYONE who opposes the Clinton's!"

Naturally, Hillary wanted that banned completely. The Citizens United Decision held that since this was pure issue advocacy and did not involve a contribution in kind to any particular candidate, there was no appearance of corruption and the restriction allowed in Buckley vs Valeo did not apply.

Pure Issue Advocacy may not be regulated by the Government. No matter who does it.

The principle that corporations are considered "people" under the law is not absurd, but a logical extension of the idea of individual rights as enumerated in the Constitution. Regardless of why they formed a corporation, they are and should be able to exercise the same rights as a corporation as they did as individuals.

The sudden disdain for that principle on the Right is entirely due to emotionalism and the fact that certain for-profit corporations are are proving to be politically hostile. It is just another manifestation of the mob mentality that shows itself here from time to time, and certainly not based either on good logic or well-founded principles.

One can be all in favor of breaking up tech monopolies like Google without adopting the rhetoric and emotional idiocy of the Left regarding basic constitutional principles.

437 Right, Because simply recognizing that a bunch of snooty fuck CEO golden parachute assholes wearing ties in a board room watching the stock portfolio rise do not constitute a "corporate human being" is being totally emotionally idiotic.
I have read every comment above on corporations being "individuals" and none have any context beyond " I'm a smarter, better than you fucking lawyer and I said so, that's why."
Not one.

No plan for Judiciary Cmte to vote to hold McGahn in contempt of Congress until after the Memorial Day recess. Hse not expected to move resolution to hold Barr in contempt. Both of those projects will wait until at least early June.

478 The whole "antivax" movement is a direct result of the Progressive siege against the edifice of public knowledge.

Science was once hailed as a nigh magical thing, not to be gainsayed by mere plebes.

Then a few decades of:

-Eat shitloads of carbs! No, wait, don't! IT'S SCIENCE!!!
-Eggs are good for you! No, Bad! No, Good! IT'S SCIENCE!!!
-We're all gonna starve to death! No, freeze to death! No, burn to death! IT'S SCIENCE!!!

No wonder the IT'S SCIENCE!!! tactic doesn't work anymore when talking about vaccinations which are actually... you know...

science.

483 Neocon Right: Wages are too high guys. When salaries get too high, it's a sign that we have a problem and we need more workers. It's insane that blue collar workers can see 60k wages sometimes, or 80k for IT workers. We need to keep those wages down to stay competitive.

Also Neocon Right: Executives with multi-million dollar salaries are completely acceptable, they earned every penny, how dare you suggest that's somehow unearned.

How much of the wage increase has been the result of increasing the minimum wage ?

Posted by: Kurt at May 22, 2019 06:43 AM (tiDxm)

487 There is a limit to how far you can drive the price of goods down by obtaining them externally, as ultimately in order to buy goods, people have to work. I mean, in a socialist-ish paradise where everyone got a $1M credit each year to spend as they liked on goods from around the world so no one had to work, that money wouldn't buy a bag of popcorn because money is basically an IOU for the value you created. If we created no value, people receiving our money wouldn't be able to exchange it for the value we created, either, thus it would have no value itself.
