The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The administration eventually opted against strictly enforcing current dress code guidelines because of the negative effect that could have on the environment. Male faculty feel uncomfortable addressing female students about the length of their skirts, and even female faculty have expressed frustration with the ongoing challenge of dress code. There are challenges with boys too, but nothing that will require a change in options.” Kevin Calkin

Quote II

........but at this point I no longer believe there are many traces of morals, ethics, or principles within the Venezuelan armed forces. The military leadership allowed all this interference to take place in exchange for a lot of money, many privileges, and immense access to power. At one point, some very brave individuals rebelled against the first great Cuban attempt to penetrate the armed forces, which was carried out under the terrible slogan of “Socialism, Homeland, or Death,” but they were all repressed by the government. Orlando Avendaño

Quote III

Socialism promises a utopia that sounds good, but those promises are never realized. It most often results in massive human suffering. Capitalism fails miserably when compared with a heaven or utopia promised by socialism. But any earthly system is going to come up short in such a comparison. Walter E. Williams

Quote IV

“Married people are happier than other population subgroups, but only when their spouse is in the room when they’re asked how happy they are. When the spouse is not present: fucking miserable,” Paul Dolan

Spin City: Chicago Tribune Calls Dead Thug A "Victim" After Concealed Carry Holder Defends Himself

A south suburban quadriplegic who died at a suburban hospital over the weekend succumbed to injuries he suffered in 2017, when he was shot and paralyzed by a concealed carry permit holder in the city’s Calumet Heights neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.

...

Ford’s injury stemmed from a Dec. 12, 2017, shooting that began with the then-18-year-old pulling his own gun on a 27-year-old man driving his vehicle into a rear yard in the 9100 block of South Harper Avenue, according to Chicago police.

The older man, a concealed carry holder, pulled his own firearm and shot the victim, police said. -Chicago Tribune

Centenarian cat fight turns deadly.

Thank Lord I didn't have a child graduating from this zoo school. I would have walked out of the ceremony.

Hampshire College is currently fighting for its life but that hasn’t caused them to rethink their left wing politics.

Mass Live reports:

Hampshire College commencement speaker rails against ‘white-supremacist capitalism’

Ericka Hart – a social justice practitioner, sexuality educator, descendant of slaves and cancer survivor – delivered Saturday’s keynote commencement address at Hampshire College.

Hart recounted her own experience after graduating college, describing myriad instances of discrimination, sexism and racism – and one of her first jobs working on a luxury liner, when her boss said she must salute the ship’s captain whenever she encounters him on the boat.

She refused, and thus extended a journey already begun in search of individual, and social, and economic, justice – imploring the graduates to say what needs to be said, to whoever, in the moment.

“What the hell am I going to do next,” Hart said, recalling the stress she felt right after graduation – formulating that discomfort as “a capitalist induced anxiety.”

Hart began her speech saying: “I want to recognize the black people that have been pushed out of Amherst.”

She referred to New York City – where she works as a sex educator for Kindergarten through 5th grade students – as “the most segregated school system.”

Hart told the graduating class that “white-supremacist capitalism expects you to pull yourself up by the bootstraps” and that “educational institutions” will do many things “to claim credit for your success.

The ONT Musical Interlude

On this day: 26 May 1969
John Lennon and Yoko Ono began an eight-day 'bed in', in room 1742 of The Hotel La Reine Elizabeth, Montreal, Canada, to promote world peace. They recorded 'Give Peace a Chance' in the hotel room (Petula Clark can be heard on the chorus). The song was credited to Lennon & McCartney, even though Paul had nothing to do with the record. via thisdayinmusic.com

Never enough Yoko, amirite?

On this day: 26 May 1972
At the point of the band splitting up David Bowie offered Mott The Hoople two of his new songs, 'Suffragette City', which they turned down and 'All The Young Dudes', which they recorded. The song gave the group a No.3 UK and US Top 40 hit. via thisdayinmusic.com

Turning a joyous occasion into a Genius Award Moment.

Crashing a wedding can go two ways: you have a great time while enjoying some free drinks and leave without anyone noticing you weren’t actually invited or you join the bride and groom during their first dance and get arrested.

Mark Saunderson, 37 of Land O’ Lakes, experienced the latter way.

Saunderson invited himself to a wedding reception at the Grand Plaza Hotel on St. Pete Beach Monday evening, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

After walking into the reception, Saunderson cut into the bride and groom’s first dance.

Quite the staff at Reading Hospital. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Gov. Mifflin High School students Sean Bachman and IsaBela Santiesteban, both 17, got into a car crash in February while on their first date to get ice cream.

Bachman was taken to Reading Hospital with broken bones, nine broken ribs, a collapsed left lung and a concussion.

Santiesteban also was transported to Reading Hospital after suffering a minor spinal fracture, a broken rib and a lacerated kidney.

Santiesteban was discharged before Bachman, but she came back to the hospital to visit him every day.

"I was starting to think she really does like me. I got to talking with some of the nurses about how to ask her to the prom," Bachman told The Reading Eagle.

The nurses came up with a great idea.

Guy next door recently bought, out of bankruptcy, a finance company writing about $3 million a month in loans for elective surgery, most all of it being boobs and butts.

All over in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.

Dutchess has had a bad neurological incident. I went out late this afternoon to let everyone out (they're put up in the air-conditioned kennel on hot days) and found her unable to get up and unresponsive. We really thought we would have to have her put down. She now seems more alert and can walk around, but she's disinclined to get up on her own.

We've known she has seizures but we don't know what causes them. When she was younger, we thought it was excitement of running. But here she was inside in a pen all day.

She's not out of the woods. Spare a thought for her.

And my budget is totally inadequate to meet the emotional needs of some of my constituents. In fact, it is not big enough to fix design flaws. I have to lower expectations of what is reasonable to expect.

123 Heya Horde--

Anyone else watching the returns on the EU parliamentary elections? Interesting stuff. Brexit party with a strong showing in most of the country. Unfortunately, Liberal Democrats (Hardcore leavers) are in 2nd and they seem to have picked up votes from some of the Tories who were leaving their party.

Nigel Farage thought maybe if it was big enough it'd shut up the Remainers, I believe I read. Makes sense-- it's not a British election but it's kinda testing the waters. And be fair, a good showing at 29 seats (Scotland hasn't called but that's the smart bet) + 4 Tory seats held, but even if you throw in the 2 Irish parties that lean Leave it's a bit less than half. My guess is that if Brexit could have held even another, I dunno, 3 seats that went to LD from the Tories, (which seems like it ought to have been possible, but I ain't from around there), they'd probably have been able to convince the Liberal Dems, Labor and Green party to drop the 2nd referendum BS.

As is-- since the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place parties are roughly ideologically aligned, my guess is they're all going to turn up the drumbeat for a 2nd referendum and maybe all throw in behind the Lib Dems or Labor as their best bet for taking the next set of BRITISH elections.

Whaddya think? Anyone live in the UK who wants to weigh in? I'm all ears.

186 About to retire (for the evening, I'm only a bit north of 29 for God's sake) and had to have just another small rage stroke. Email from the now dependably Trump Deranged NY Law Journal has a headline about "Trump Associate charged with bribery."

Apparently some Calk fellow approved a dicey loan to Paul Manafort and hinted he wanted to be considered for a cabinet level position. He never got any position with the Trump Admin. Whatever improper intent exists seems to be solely on this Calk guy, as there so far appears no evidence that Manafort even elevated his name for some special consideration. Or if he did, then perhaps Manafort will have also been implicated.

But on Yahoo its comment after comment (bot after bot?) about "Trump's corruption" and "selling his office etc." Not one visible comment about the obvious acceptance of oodles of cash from all manner of sleazy foreigners to the hallowed "Clinton Foundation" which of course funds the lavish Clinton crime family lifestyle.

This was another little stink-bomb put on delayed fuse left by the Mueller shit show to hand off to the now completely rogue US Attorney for the Southern District, that seems to have decided its purpose is to conduct lawfare against a duly elected President, and to attempt to intimidate by malicious prosecution anyone who might dare to associate with him.

I think the President should set the table for some US Attorney firings, starting with the Southern District.

And for the record, Mueller is an absolute disgrace. The only "integrity" he has is to merely stop at a smear when he knows, out of sheer self-preservation, an actual charge won't stick. Maybe once a Marine, but a true ratfucker now (to borrow a legal term of art).

Computers are just systems, is all. Clusters of little parts that do different things. Troubleshooting them is the same as diagnosing a car or resynchronizing an alligator or trying to figure out why it itches. Isolate parts that can't be causing the problem, and most of the time, you're left with the thing that is.

328 Along the lines of the kindergarten sex educator (WTH) complaining about all the isms.

My brother's girlfriend just graduated from Georgetown Law. At the ceremony, the speaker was some well known lawyer who practices in NY government, I think.

She went on to tell all the stories of sexism towards her in her day, the implication being, I think, that women still have a long way to go.

One of her stories was about how during her interview to become Justice Marshall's clerk (a job which she got), an interviewer asked her if she was offended by ribald jokes. She said no, she told such jokes to. Then the guy said people had said not to ask that but that the justice likes dirty jokes and he would ask the same question of a man.

I suppose this was an example of sexism?

Then she told about how she was the first female law professor at Yale and they didn't have a female bathroom. It wasn't really a big deal IMO and could have been easily solved without drama. And sure there was sexism/insensitivity involved, but seriously, it wasn't that serious.

The woman is a contemporary of my mom, who also started teaching in another Ivy League school around the same time (late 60s/early 70s). I asked my mom why she, a black (African) woman never told us all these stories of sexist and, in her case, racist oppression? My mom just did her thing, got her Ivy League doctorate in 3 years and moved on with her life.

Now, my mom is known for not being the most observant person in the world, so maybe she missed the intense oppression?

I'm okay with acknowledging sexism in the past, but why can't the message be: see how far we've come. Now, go and take life by the horns. The world is your oyster!

This is why I don't like feminists, even the ones from the 60s when there was still quite a bit of sexism. The problem with these people is a lack of gratitude.

330 OK, I'm piecing it together --

My cult will be named The Cavalry of Fire. (A reference to "FireHorse" is in there, as well as the implication that I'm its leader.)

My title will be Grand Admiral of the Fire Fleet. (There won't be anything remotely naval or nautical; it's just part of the mystery of The Cavalry.)

I won't wear anything resembling over mitts, except when I take something out of the oven. Maybe I'll don a swimming cap with goggles, or something eccentric.

I'm in in for simple Maslow's hierarchy of needs stuff -- trying to climb that pyramid, and the next step is prestige, but promotion opportunities at work are too few and far between.

What's in it for my followers is the chance to commit suicide in a meaningful way, which I'll delay forever -- "When the stars align and when the time is right" -- and in the meantime, I'll try to find other avenues which can lead to each member's fulfillment -- maybe teach trades and professions on my compound.

I'll refrain from the creepy sexual stuff. If I wanted to engage in that, I'd move to a big city and teach elementary school.

The doctrine I can make up on the fly.

415 not sure that running a cult would be an undesirable thing.

Years ago, a friend rented a sailboat in Sausalito for a few days. At the end of the dock was a much larger ship, owned by Werner Erhard, the founder of EST.

EST was well past its prime, but there still was much to-and-froing to the ship by the ESTies, who were remarkably unfriendly. The males and the unattractive females could be seen cleaning the exterior of the ship, polishing the brightwork, etc.

No sign of the attractive females. We joked that they must have "other duties" inside the ship.

Much later, I read a biography of Erhard, and that was exactly what was going on.

The Big Reveal in EST (at the end of one of their famous North Korean-style brainwashing weekends) was that you choose everything that happens to you. You chose your parents.

After EST declined, Erhard started the "Hunger Project" along EST lines, which did nothing to alleviate hunger, but was designed to "create the context for eliminating hunger" (i.e. give more money to Erhard).

A canvasser for the Hunger Project stopped me on the Chicago lakefront, and I chatted with her for a bit (she was cute).

I said: "So, everything that happens to you is the result of your own choice."
Canvasser: "Yes."
Me: "So, on August 6th, 1945, several hundred thousand Japanese in Hiroshima simultaneously willed an atomic explosion over their heads."
Canvasser: "Yes."

Frightening.

Wife and elder son took a drive through SE Wyoming today. Drove back roads, saw tidy farms and ranches, green spring grass, flowing creeks, thunderhead building. We visited Fort Laramie.

America is about the ground we walk around on. It's what brung the Irish and ze Germans and the Skandis here.

America is all about seeing cloud shadows dancing across sandstone buttes, and being able to get a really good American beer (Odell IPA) at a Japanese restaurant run by people who are not Japanese.

507 Trump is receiving the very top treatment in Tokyo.

First foreign head of state to meet with the new emperor in the new imperial era.

Flexibility on ancient traditions and warm welcome at national sumo arena.

Continuation of the obviously legitimately close and cooperative relationship with PM Abe [the golf outing and dinner were great, and fun for both sides].

There will be some serious wrasslin' on trade [Lightizer has been there for a few days already], but the overall alliance - which has gained importance due to the same geopolitical trends that have rendered most European alliances less critical - is obviously nicely recovered from the damage inflicted by the toxic children in the previous administration.

529 123 Heya Horde--

Posted by: FlamethrowerInTheDark

Nigel Farage is now the de facto leader of Britain.

Look at the actual map of today's election results -- the Brexit Party is blue:

(remove spaces)

https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/ 2019/05/27/02/13998676-0-im age-a-5_1558920532562.jpg

Notice anything? ALL OF ENGLAND IS SOLID BLUE.

Geography-wise, Brexit Party took 93% of British territory -- an absolutely overwhelming devastating result.

It's even more lopsided than the "all-red US 2016 Trump election" map.

The other parties only held on in the biggest cities. But they're all fractured.

Were it not for the hardcore left in London, Manchester and a handful of other places, the whole country, north to south, east to west, is solidly behind Brexit.

And don't assume that all Labour voters are Remainers. I was in England earlier this year and met two different people who were lifelong Labour voters (and who will continue to vote Labour) but who were both emphatically pro-Brexit. Most Labour voters just vote Labour out of habit, like Dem voters here. In their personal beliefs, they're actually pretty conservative, when queried about it.

Get out of London and basically all you will ever see is pro-Brexit support.

The UK media won't tell you any of this though, so we're pretty much going to see the same thing as in the US -- the people support populist conservatism, while the media acts like leftism is on the rise.

545 Yeah, took dad and sister. What they did with old footage to make it look like it was filmed recently is amazing. Supposedly they have found 15 hours of new film never shown but don't think that was in there. There were around 9 veterans who were interviewed for the film. It was much better to see on the big screen than tv.

Posted by: Skip at May 27, 2019 06:02 AM (BbGew)

546 The original had no sound to it so the actually took hours of rides in a B-17 recording it from all the angles the film took inside and out.
I think someone here or elsewhere said it will be on HBO in June, but as said on a big screen it does give you a feeling of what it would look like if you were there.

566 A letter from one of my uncles, who was in law school when the U.S. entered WWII. He enlisted, and was selected for Officer Candidate School. "Soon, I do not know how soon, I shall have to demonstrate not only how much or how well I have learned the art of killing, but how well I have taught that abominable art to others. I know what's ahead. It won't be another pleasure trip, but though it may cost me my life, I wouldn't want to miss it! Should I be among the many who inevitably must fall, remember that I didn't go without realizing the possibility that might lose my life. Remember, too, that I give my life willingly, that I do so out of love for my country and all it's people, even the the traitors and selfish slackers. If I should die on the battlefield, I beg you to leave my body there. Some day our government may provide you the opportunity to visit my grave. If so, avail yourself of that opportunity." The commanding officer of a heavy weapons platoon in the 116th regiment, 29th Division, he survived Omaha Beach. He wrote a "Victory Gram" home on June 11th, 1944. "Dear folks, Alive and well. Don't worry. The Hun is strong, clever, and brave, but we are beating him. The past few days here have seemed like years - so much has happened. France is beautiful. I think I'll like it better than England. Maybe all of this free wine and champagne makes the difference! You see, it's purer than the water from the wells, which the Germans may have poisoned.
