SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Yoko Ono, the well-known and little-understood artist, is bringing her work back to Syracuse this summer for a show at the Everson Museum of Art. Will her return as an 86-year-old trigger the same breathless reactions that she encountered in 1971, when the Everson hosted her first solo museum show? Perhaps not. Al Stewart met Yoko when he first got to London. He was persuaded to give Yoko a large part of his paltry cash to support a Yoko art project.
The actual methods of persuasion used are unknown to me.
Al Stewart seemed to know a lot of people in London that became famous later.

-Nurse ratched fortunately the chemo I'm on is on the less sever side as the biggest effect is stomach discomfort (which can be fairly bad relatively), waves of exhaustion, some brain fog and shakeiness in Limbs that grows the further from chemo I get, though admittedly seeing the nurse have to put on a gown and gloves before handling one of the best does give pause. I also get a steroid, but thankfully not a level that triggers mania as I experienced that when initially hospitalized and can live without experiencing that again-it was worse than Yoko by magnitudes.

Ordered parts to fix same. Took it apart today. There is a bolt, with a metal sleeve, that passes through a pair of nylon bushings with flanges. There are thrust washers to ride against the flanges, to prevent end float, and "O" rings to seal the whole thing against road dust.
You know what's not there? Any damned way to get grease into the friggin' bushings. There's a grease nipple not a half-inch away from the bore, but it supplies the wheel bearing located directly above it, not the bushing bore.
I think I will drill and tap a hole, and install another grease nipple to lube the bushing, too.

Something catastrophic did happen, just can't get the hosting provider to say what it is.
If I have to, I can rebuild elsewhere and recreate most of the accounts. Passwords will necessarily change and the old email won't be there. I'm just really pissed that I I even have to consider it. If I had made offsite backups like I tell everyone else to do...

Back in 1993-94, I worked for a small startup computer school called Focus Automation, which later became Focus Institute. At that job I had a fantastic-- and not bad-looking boss, Anna Brannon.
Ever since that job ended (too soon like all my other good jobs), I've wanted to catch up to her. I spent years looking for her online, but she seemed to disappear after 1996; just nothing about her at all since then.
I just now finally found her... but it wasn't good. Turns out she passed away last year. She was only a year older than me. As I said, I haven't seen/spoken to her in years, but it still feels sad.

The thing that made it interesting was the relationship between Paul (upbeat, positive, bright tempos, major keys) and John (downer, minor keys, slower tempos).
Between the two of them they made a nice team.

I admit I didn't quite get why she was still working. By all accounts she made quite a bit of money between modeling and her glamour shots photography stores. Nevertheless, she was one of my best bosses, and didn't even seem to mind so much that I found her attractive. Others did too; I once had a co-worker at Focus ask me, "how can you STAND it?!" ;-)
(Thankfully though, she was very approachable, which I was able to use to my advantage emotionally; I tend to become most obsessive about the women who aren't so accessible.)

His "War As I Knew It" was published very posthumously, in 1976. It's his war memoirs, basically his diary edited as much as he could before he was killed.
It's clear from the movie Patton (1970) that the producers had access to the manuscript. The iconic scenes like a German fighter strafing them when the Brits had just declared that there was no threat from the sky is in there.
In some ways it's more awesome than the movie. In the movie when the Bulge gets surrounded (plus or minus Christmas) everyone says I can relieve them by mid-February or I can get there in late January and Patton says my men are working on a plan to turn around and get there in three days.
In real life, if his book is to be believed, he started planning it before it happened. He wrote "if Rundstedt (I think) counterattacks, as I expect him to, we will have to be ready for...".
Anyway, always good to read from the horse's mouth.

It's a shitty one (as opposed to the good cancers, right?) but what I was told is it oncologists seem to have hope that breakthroughs in treatment may not be far off. The current treatment is a steroid and there are chemo drugs whosr effects aren't such that they'll ever be street drugs, but my experience and also what I was told in advance is they aren't miserable forms of chemo.
So again, I hope Drs are wrong and it's actually something more beignin but MM, while not good, isn't at least immediately a quick decline from what I've heard and experienced...and this is from someone who ignored it for so many years they are in a neck brace due to a misshapen and severely dislocated c4 vertebra, has concrete in his c7 as it was close to collapse and doesn't have a c1 as it was gobbled on by the cancer.
Not trying to play one ups manship, just trying to say this one isn't usually a quick disease, and most of the limited amount I've googled has been contradicted by my oncologist (and the one I saw while hospitalized as she was on vacation when I first got diagnosed) as being out of date by a couple years. I hope this helps a little, but understand if it doesn't as it is easier for me again cause it's me and not a loved one.

Fortunately my boss is very simpatico in that respect. But I work in a small business. I imagine things are different in corporations.

Thing is, they aren't useless. Or at least needn't be. They produce fine geological maps of areas, that probably would not get mapped by industry, because no expectation of resources. And when those maps come out, they are scrutinized by corporate geologists, and surprise, surprise! Sometimes unidentified resources are discovered. Or clues to look for them.

I've been messing around and giving a little TLC to my tractors. Changing the oil and filters and other servicing.
My 8700 is a '77 model and the damn thing is thus 42 years old. I can't believe it. It's got 7484 hours on it. And it's not using any oil and still purrs like a kitten. That hour figure, figuring about 50 miles per hour is about 375K miles equivalent.
The engine is the venerable 401 cd I-6 Ford. It's a "square" engine, bore = stroke, 4.4" x 4.4". The cast iron oil pan, which holds 16 quarts weighs more that some automotive engines total.
One of the legends was Ford fired the engineers who designed that and similar engines because they were lasting too long. 10K hours or better before overhaul needed. :-) I can almost believe that.

My little International B414D keeps soldiering along. I doubt the engine has ever been torn down, although the hour meter is long gone.
I got it a couple of years after I moved to the acreage I'm on. Friend of mine told about this old tractor in the back yard of a business down the alley from where he worked, and said it had been cleared of junk, recently. I went there, and asked, "is this old tractor for sale?" They said, "Yes, we just put an ad in the Bargain Finder, and it comes out today. It was tied up up in an estate for a long time, but we finally got it sorted out." Me: "If you can get it running for me, I have $3500 in my pocket." Them: "Come back tomorrow morning." So I did, and it was running. Gave them the money. They said the phone was ringing off the hook all night and morning.
Little tractor has a loader on it, and a 3-point hitch, and power steering. It is a jewel. I gave it a set of new glow plugs, and replaced the starter, when that finally died.

One is not concerned with the distance a tractor travels. Mileage is the standard measure of life on automotive, cars and trucks.
Consider a stationary engine. It has literally zero miles on it for it's life. Hours of operation is the measure of course.
Now, we want a rough way to compare "how old", "how worn" that engine is to a car/truck.
50 miles per hour is that rough equivalent.

Now, where does that 50 mph rough estimate come from? Well, the engine is running somewhere around 1800 RPM more or less, average roughly. Now, at what speed would be truck or car be going running at that RPM?
About 50 MPH.
Some use 60 MPH conversion. But I prefer 50. A tractor out running is the equivalent of a car or truck out on the highway, running long, not short stop and go driving, which is harder on engines.

I found the U of Nebraska test data on the 8700. They are the authority on tractor performance tests:

Note they're trying more real world figures, PTO and drawbar pull, and not dynamometer figures of torgue and HP. They get real output power and drawbar pull figures.
You'll note that things pull (torque) curve is fairly flat from 2000 to 1200 RPM. It will keep pulling down to 600 RPM. The lugging performance is great.
Note this is a naturally aspirated version of the 401. The turbo versions will have more power and torque, but the torque curve gets steeper. It will not lug steadily down to nothing.

The wear on a tractor engine is much like the wear on a boat engine, only worse.
It's what's called "Shock Load Wear", and is created by the sudden and unpredictable back-loading through the drive train of transitioning from soft to hard soil, rock impacts, load transitions (that boulder you just dumped from the bucket "lightened" the load, but springed the HELL out of your drive train!), and etc.
Much like a sixty foot yacht encountering a twelve foot wave....it's a sudden and severe shock to the prop, the propeller shaft and the clutch and engine in the bargain.
"Tractor Hours" are just a whole lot damn harder than "Odometer Miles" on a passenger vehicle.
Hell, they're harder than Odometer Miles on a Class 8 over the road semi, if you get right down to it.
ngine and transmission bearings manage force in two directions.
* rotational, which is what you think of when you think of "bearings". And high torque shock feedback can whiplash a driveline to induce some incredible forces in this aspect.
* thrust, which is what most people fail to realize that drivetrain bearings have to manage. This is the land of "tapered bearings", and THE major player for "shock loads" as described above.
The bearings in a tractor or boat, are usually TWICE THE SIZE of what you find in a car or even 3/4 ton truck, precisely for these reasons.

The shock load to the drivetrain is why wheel slip on a tractor is so important. The optimum varies with a lot of factors, but is usually in the 5 -15% range.
Wheel slip helps absorb some of the shock load. Too much, and you're wasting fuel and wearing tires.
The rear axles on this 8700 and all but the smallest are double reduction. Total reduction is around 16:1. But that is split, 4:1 on the differential, and the final 4:1 in some outboard planetary units. There are wet brakes in between.
Good draft control with mounted implements all helps with shock loads.

I did not know that WHO actually started using DDT again in 2006 for insect control. That is a good thing. And surprising.

So if you wanted to know what had been done on acrylic ester emulsions crosslinked by amino acids or an analysis of the patent landscape of AstraZeneca, I was the guy to see. Very important work and a great time saver for R&D, Legal and sales.
The big boys decided to get rid of that function. The big boys are saying in essence to everyone, "Use Google for patent searching."
There were three of us let go. Among us we're inventors on 330 US patents. But to the MBAs we're just a cost.
