"Un-American imposter" is a pretty accurate description of Barky, though still a bit soft.
I remember when Michelle Bachmann said, correctly, that Barky was un-AMerican and the Hill GOP went into total conniption fits. And the thing is that Barky wasn't merely un-American (he certainly was that) but he was totally ANTI-American (and anti-Western, in general), which is far, far worse ... though the Founders tried to stop the "un-American" part with the "natural born citizen" requirement ... which pretty much everyone dutifully ignored and argued against and pretended was too old-fashioned and silly to ever even contemplate in any serious way. And yes I say that knowing how destructive Obama's second term ended up being. OTOH, Rubio does have one fixed principle that he has not (yet) betrayed and that is his enduring opposition to the Castro regime and its pals in Venezuela, etc. I can't think of any policy Ryan really cared about. ------------------- A well known secret. The USAF was offered the production jigs, molds and data package for the A-10 and the AF said no. They were destroyed. The USAF has a real problem with supplying close air support. Its not sexy. This has been a problem since they split off from the Army. The reason we didn't invade Cuba was because the AF could not promise 24 hour air cover to the Army. The Marines had theres, the Army didn't. Following that screw up the Army went out and built their own air force all over again. I actually donated time and effort to work at Romney's local headquarters delivering signs, etc. as a volunteer to his campaign.
I have to say, something happened to him in the past few years. He was not this strutting self important peacock trying to gather as much attention as possible. He's having a mid life crisis late and he is finding being a Senator just was worthless as most of us think a Senator is. As Cruz says, you spend 90% of your time fundraising and 10% doing actual legislative things. Romney can't possibly find as a Morman, the Washington cocktail circuit interesting or enjoyable, he's associating in the Senate with a majority of idiotic grifters, only interested in raising money and enriching themselves while the chase as much tail as they can. For a former major businessman who is used to actually getting things done and his idea's implemented, this has to be strangulating to him at this point in his life. It's still no excuse for his behavior. The best thing that could happen would be for Trump to appt him ambassador to Tahiti or something he can't really muck up with his own opinion. And get him out of the Senate. Posted by: Jen the original at May 15, 2019 03:15 PM (64/ml) 387

------------------- I didn't know that but it makes sense. They can loiter on station forever and deliver very accurate and very close air support. Using a Harrier for CAS means one fast run and dump and they have to go home to refuel. Bringing jets in close is not something you want to do a lot of. The best all around CAS plane was the A-1 Skyraider. It could stay on station for six-eight hours and shutdown multiple grid squares. It was also armored and could take a hit and carry a shit ton of multiple ordnance. The A-10 was largely a tank killer. Posted by: Puddin Head - CNN at May 15, 2019 03:16 PM (2LelM) 398

Mitt Romney, Cuck Commander
I'm always amused when the Brits designate someone as "Knight Commander of the British Empire." My favorite A-10 story was told to me by a tank commander buddy of mine. They were out in eastern Oregon training and the other side has an A-10. They had their tank in some trees and thought it was pretty well concealed when one flew overhead, turned "on a dime" in the air, and came back at them on an attack run. He said the guy next to him looking out "screamed like a little girl" even though the plane had no ammo.

The problem with the R-3350s in the B-29 could be traced to several factors.
1. The engine was still maturing when rushed into production. 2. The B-29s were launching heavily loaded from the Mariana bases where one engine failing at take-off meant death for the crew. The R-3350 would also power the C-69 Constellation and after the war the AD/A-1 Skyraider family. Posted by: Anna Puma at May 15, 2019 03:31 PM (Z0KTx) 487

Yeah, I don't know where the electronics shaking apart thing is coming from either, but the A-10s are getting old (spares getting scarce, for instance) and their utility-per-dollar is dropping fast. Just because the Air Force had bad reasons for wanting to get rid of them in the past doesn't mean we should keep them in service until the Second Coming and accept no criticism or re-evaluation of their worth.
The truth is that most of what they've been doing in the Middle East is dropping smart-bombs from altitude, with the gun only used occasionally. That means that the gun is a big dead weight most of the time. There's also been a proliferation of cheaper and smaller smart weapons in the last 15 years, with stuff like APKWS (laser-guided Hydra rockets) coming into service, and this makes the massive, unique gun around which the entire A-10 was designed and built kind of a questionable value proposition when you can hang equal or greater killing power off other platforms with a lot less parasitic weight. So far so good for wog-bashing and counter-insurgency. The real issue, though, is that the A-10s has always had a questionable survivability against anything more than guys in pickup trucks with DShKs in the back. Yes, the armor and other survivability measures will keep the pilot alive even when the aircraft takes severe damage, but a severely damaged aircraft isn't flying any more sorties for, either. What we observed first in Vietnam and then in the 1st Gulf War was that going in low against even a half-competent enemy gets a lot more planes downed and aircrew killed by AAA and various nasty tricks than would be lost by just dealing with the SAMs at mid-altitude with proper SEAD and EW (take a look at Gulf War aircraft losses and damage and you'll see this trend pretty clearly). Back then, when A-10 was designed, there was no other option for CAS than to get the plane low and slow and let the pilot look around. That's where all the protective measures (armor, redundancy) in the design came from. It was to let the aircraft (and pilot) survive to complete a few sorties in the expected air defense environment of the Central Front in the '70s - '80s should Der Russ Kommt. Well, bad news, there's been substantial progress made by our potential adversaries in anti-aircraft technology and doctrine since then and what was then top-tier technology has proliferated to a lot more countries. Low altitude work is now insanely dangerous, even against second-tier militaries. It's unlikely that the A-10 can survive that environment, and the gun is no longer the only way to kill armor reliably (its original rationale). I'd like to point out that the real value of the A-10s is not the aircraft but their pilots, who train extensively for the CAS mission. If you put new hardware in their hands that can actually keep them alive long enough to do their jobs in the peer-fight, I don't think there will be any great loss of performance. Quite the opposite. For the low-end fight, counter-insurgency and the like, there's no need to carry around the tremendous weight of the gun and armor and we can move to a smaller, cheaper aircraft that can carry more killing power per dollar of sortie cost. I'd also like to say that junior psychologist arguments like "the Air Force doesn't like the A-10 because it's not zoomy and sleek like a fighter or big and powerful like a bomber," or to paraphrase another example I've heard, "the Navy only builds aircraft carriers because the admirals are dumb fighter jocks with tiny peeners" always make me cringe a little. It makes me cringe because I've read the combat reports and the analyses and the detailed histories that show why a given decision (good or bad) was made and by whom, and let me tell you "Admiral so-and-so was compensating for his small dick" just never seems like a very compelling explanation once you're read up on that stuff. The Air Force increasingly disliked the A-10 because they were looking at progress in air defense tech and continually evaluating its survivability down at the same time that they thought (incorrectly, it turns out) that they could do the job with a different platform. Well, now we've got years of battle experience with guided weapons of various types, including *most of the actual work done by the A-10 in our recent conflicts,* the aircraft are that much older, and their survivability is that much more in doubt, so now probably is the time to move on.
