The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

When no hill is worth dying on, eventually your enemy has all the high ground and you are surrounded. CDR Salamander

Quote II

“This oil field would not run without the Mexican nationals, God bless their souls. The majority doing the hard work are Mexican nationals. Are they legal? Do they have their paper work?” John Cantu

Quote III

But to my knowledge, Maya “Alec” McKinney is the first tranny accused of a school shooting, and for that I thank her in helping to make the world a more equal place. Jim Goad

Quote IV

See, the thing that kept the establishment in power was the veneer of legitimacy over our institutions which made us defer to them even when we felt they were wrong.

But maintaining that veneer got inconvenient, so they stopped trying to.

Now we won't obey.

Stupid ruling class
Col. Kurt Schlicther

Another reason to approve of PDT. 'Ending the Union Medicaid Skim. Organized labor has been dunning home health-care workers for years, without their consent—but now the Trump administration has stepped in.'

Even when the Supreme Court tells a government labor union that it can’t do something, there’s no guarantee that the union will comply. In its 2014 Harris v. Quinn decision, the Court ruled that an Illinois law forcing home health-care workers—paid with Medicaid funds—to shell out cash to labor unions was unconstitutional. That should have ended unions’ ability to collect fees from these workers—many of whom were not really professionals but were receiving a small subsidy from Medicaid to care for disabled family members at home—unless the workers agreed to join the union.

In response, labor-friendly states crafted loopholes to keep the cash flowing to unions. Now the Trump administration has stepped in, moving to stop unions from skimming funds from paychecks. The Center for Medicaid Services has ruled that federal law does not allow the diversion of Medicaid funds to third parties, including unions. Caregivers can join a union if they wish, but unions must collect dues directly from their members.

Civilian parking enforcers, this should go over well in Washington, D.C.

Wherever a car parks too close to a crosswalk, a fire hydrant is blocked, or a bike lane is intruded upon, code enforcing vigilantes are quick to snap a photo and tag the relevant local department demanding action be taken against the offending motorist.

Soon enough these bike lane Batmen might get to play police for real under a proposed pilot program that would give citizens the ability to ticket each other for parking violations.

OK, a serious question, if science is settled, why is there such a disagreement about coffee consumption?

In Australia, one in six people are affected by cardiovascular disease. It is a major cause of death with one person dying from the disease every 12 minutes. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death, yet one of the most preventable.

Investigating the association of long-term coffee consumption and cardiovascular disease, UniSA researchers Dr Ang Zhou and Professor Elina Hyppönen of the Australian Centre for Precision Health say their research confirms the point at which excess caffeine can cause high blood pressure, a precursor to heart disease.

This is the first time an upper limit has been placed on safe coffee consumption and cardiovascular health.

Transparency for thee, not for me. So says various governments. They don't care for their laws, rules and regulations being posted for all to see.

WASHINGTON — Carl Malamud believes in open access to government records, and he has spent more than a decade putting them online. You might think states would welcome the help.

But when Mr. Malamud’s group posted the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, the state sued for copyright infringement. Providing public access to the state’s laws and related legal materials, Georgia’s lawyers said, was part of a “strategy of terrorism.”

A federal appeals court ruled against the state, which has asked the Supreme Court to step in. On Friday, in an unusual move, Mr. Malamud’s group, Public.Resource.Org, also urged the court to hear the dispute, saying that the question of who owns the law is an urgent one, as about 20 other states have claimed that parts of similar annotated codes are copyrighted.

Is there a magic potion to parent successful children? 'I raised 2 successful CEOs and a doctor—here’s one of the biggest mistakes I see parents making'

It’s rather strange to be a “famous” parent and have your family profiled on the cover of magazines. I certainly don’t claim all the credit for their successes, but all three have turned out to be accomplished, caring and capable people.

My .02? Stop treating your children as friends or peers. You're their parent act like it.

Want to keep unwanted guests including your mother in law from appearing at your home? Pet tarantula to the rescue.

In a desperate attempt to get a break from his nagging in-laws and regain his privacy, a Reddit user allegedly took advantage of his mother-in-law’s severe arachnophobia by getting a tarantula as a pet.

Reddit user “ProbablyAssholeGuy” isn’t really into tarantulas. He thinks they’re cool and all, but he wouldn’t have actually gotten one as a pet if weren’t for the added bonus of keeping his wife’s mother away from his house. In a post that recently went viral on the social network, the man said that his traditional Chinese in-laws had really been getting on his nerves with their unannounced visits and blatant breaches of privacy, but despite complaining to his wife about it for years, she just ignored his concerns. So when he notice his mother-in-law’s reaction to simply seeing a spider sitting in the corner of the house, he got the idea to use her arachnophobia to keep her away.

How long before the cry of "Crossbow Control"? H/T CBD

Three people were found dead from crossbow wounds in a hotel room near the southern German city of Passau, according to police.

Two other deaths, in the northern German state of Saxony, are possibly linked, police said Monday.

The revelations began on Saturday morning when an employee at a quiet inn on the river Ilz near the southern German town of Passau discovered the bodies of two women and one man after repeated knocks on the door of their hotel room failed to get a response, the Associated Press reported.

Quite the whodunit, two more bodies were found in the apartment of one of the women.

'A third of youth firearm deaths could be prevented without taking away a single gun. Locking up guns keeps kids safer'

In 2015, more than 1,100 young people died by suicide or by accident because of a gun. New research suggests that almost one-third of those deaths could be prevented by simply locking up guns in the home.

“The take-home message from the findings of the study is that even a relatively modest increase in the practice of safe storage by parents could result in substantial reductions in firearm suicides and unintentional fatalities among youth,” says Michael Monuteaux, a Harvard Medical School professor of pediatrics and epidemiologist who is the first author of the new study.

Will Bayer be litigated out of business?

A Northern California jury on Monday awarded $2.055 billion to a Bay Area couple who say Bayer's Roundup weedkiller caused their cancer.

Alva and Alberta Pilliod are in their 70s, and said that after using Roundup for more than 35 years, they were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2011 and 2015; both are now in remission. Their attorneys argued that scientific studies show glyphosate, the primary ingredient in Roundup, is a carcinogenic. Bayer's lawyers retorted that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other regulators have approved the product for use.

It seems there are cameras everywhere. Just ask our Genius Award Winner.

Dashcam footage shows the refuse collector throwing himself onto the bonnet of the Audi and writhing on the ground in Teversham, Cambridgeshire.

He then continues to roll around in apparent pain as his colleague confronts the driver, Wayne Nightingale.

The trash collector then tries to stop chauffer Wayne driving off by holding onto the side of the car as it moves out of the junction.

Wayne, 58, told MailOnline: “As he stood there I decided to go around him and that’s when he came towards my car and pretended that I hit him. But I knew I’d never touched him.

“The driver in front told me that he had the scene on video and we arranged for him to give it to me later on in the evening.”

It depends a lot on the publisher and the game. Some genres are worse than others, shooters in particular seem to be plagued with lootboxes and pay-to-win.

Some publishers are also better than others. Bethesda and Blizzard are flushing their good reputations down the toilet at astonishing speed, and EA has always been the Evil Empire of gaming (the list of companies they've snapped up and great IPs they've let go fallow is staggering).

The thing to do now is wait until games are out, and people you trust have weighed in on them, before biting the bullet. Know what you're getting beforehand.

73 Question: How do you tell the difference between Democrats, Republicans
and Southern Republicans?
The answer can be found by posing the following question:
You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, an Islamic Terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, praises Allah, raises his knife, and charges at you.
You are carrying a Glock cal .40, and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.
What do you do?

91 I took a chance on Days Gone, even though the reviews were meh. I love post apocalyptic open world games.

While it may not be for everyone, I have really enjoyed it. I was also surprised by the story. The story is definitely odd because it is not a central story arc with sub plots, more an attempt to do non-linear story telling to get a more realistic feel. Almost everything you do in game advances one or more story points.

I was also surprised because, as much as you might expect for the zombie genre to be downbeat and nihilistic, it is surprisingly hopeful and actually positive, story wise. Compare and contrast with Last of Us and the difference in story arc is quite telling. While it may not be as polished or focused, I like the direction it went in.

117 Ironically, the problem globalists have is one borne of globalism, or at least effective communication brought via the Guttenberg level of publishing ability available to virtually anyone with access to the internet.

The rubes are speaking amongst themselves, and comparing notes, and that simply Can't Be Allowed. It's virtually impossible to keep a lid on all the abject failures they've foisted on us, observable in real time. Before, it wasn't even reported, or hand waved away as "conspiricy theories".

There's only two ways to get someone to do something. Persuasion, or force. The "liberals" of either main party were content to gain a kind of manufactured consent, but that isn't working so well. Their bag of tricks is losing efficacy, therefore they get nasty. It gets much worse before it gets better, because intimidation works.

146 It's chilling to think that the Crossbowman, as many call him, is still up to his old pursuits. If you take a look at Interpol, he's got quite the criminal history. In the BOLO that's been making the rounds, the crossbow-wielder is described as a Swiss citizen, last name Tell, first name Wilhelm. The whole trail of destruction began when Tell, in company with his son Walter, assassinated Albrecht Gessler, a Reeve of the Swiss Canon of Uri.

Most frightening of all is that the Swiss idolize Tell and even have artwork and statues depicting his exploits. It's almost as if they've adopted a neutral status in the matter of law or relations with other countries.

I voted for Donald Trump because he was a business man that had to be tired for government red tape and so he would try to get the economy going. Oh, and he was NOT Hillary Clinton. No. But I'll tell you what'll harm your children's chances for success in life:

Crushing their spirits
Filling them with fear and self-doubt
Making them second-guess everything they do
Making them believe that nothing they do is good enough
Making them believe that they will never be good enough
Making them believe everything they do is wrong
Making them afraid of doing anything for fear of failure
Making them believe their only worth as a person is to do the parents' will or the will of other authority figures

Back in the late '50s, I lived less than two blocks from the White Horse Pike. Most Sunday mornings, I would leisurely stroll across all four lanes to get breakfast from the bakery on the other side, then stroll just as leisurely back to my side of it. Last time I was back east, the WHP had been enlarged to a full six lanes and could have been mistaken for the Atco Speedway.

233 Maybe you could rephrase his point? What, that there is no racial correlation to mass shootings? I would say using sarcasm clouds rather than clarifies...
Posted by: San Franpsycho

The article notes that reporting about Serial killers and mass shooters is pretty skewed. They like to report about some crazy white male kid, but there are a lot of other (statistically significant) people doing shootings like this, and the whole thing is kind of tragic.

The heavy sarcasm was that the two freaks that did the shooting in the Denver suburbs was that they were "statistically" off the expected norm for the reporter class. But they were nucking futs.

Posted by: Bozo Conservative....unfrozen caveman moron at May 14, 2019 11:09 PM (S6Pax)

234 @145 Oh naturally. Ubisoft is converged too, and their products increasingly expensive SJW shit. That's too many companies... but when you consider how shit the entire mass media is? You're super thankful for Slavic overlords like CDPR and Warhorse.

--------------------

One upcoming game has something that *might* be covertly mocking the SJWs...

Total War: Three Kingdoms is set in the Three Kingdoms era of ancient China (late second to early third centuries). It's due out on the 23rd of this month. The game largely focuses on the battlefield, where women had a very minimal role. That's not to say that they didn't do some important things during the era (even if Daiochan herself was fictional). But they weren't running around the battlefield as shown in the Dynasty Warriors series of games.

Obviously, the SJWs won't stand for such a thing these days. I'm not aware of any actual complaints about the lack of women in the upcoming game. But I would be surprised if Creative Assembly wasn't at least somewhat aware of the undeserved flack that they were undoubtedly going to catch over it.

So, they added a female warlord.

Now this female warlord is actually historically based. There's a couple of sentences in The Record of the Three Kingdoms that mentions a female bandit by that name, and that Cao Cao's army defeated and killed her. Literally not one other mention of her is found in the existing historical records, and so we know nothing else about her. As a result, Creative Assembly essentially had a free hand in designing her.

And they went nuts.

Leadership in the other factions is all based around the evil patriarchy. Leaders are all males, and leadership descends through the male descendants. But not her faction! Her faction has female leaders, and descent is through the female line! The other factions all want to take control of the Han Empire (or restore it, depending on the warlord in question). That's not good enough for her, though. She's so crazed that she wants to up end the whole edifice of the Empire, and burn it all to the ground! That way she can rebuild it as her matriarchal paradise!

Sounds like a good little radical feminist type, doesn't she?

And just to note - there are actual factions that are specifically aimed at confronting the corruption that ran rampant during the Late Han Dynasty. Her write-up makes it pretty clear that she's not one of those kinds of warlords. She just wants to raze all of it.

Another one of my favorite Conway sketches:

He's playing a Nazi interrogator, the most feared in the all the world and parts of Canada. Harvey is playing another Nazi and Lyle Wagoner is their prisoner.

Conway cracks Lyle up there with the Hitler puppet. I won't spoil it further if you have seen it.

Conway was notorious about ad libbing. They'd do the sketches in rehearsal, and then, during the taping before the live audience, he'd go off script and crack them up.

I think the monks would have been rather offended to discover that I eventually learned Russian instead.

You know what would put a big dent in these scammers? An international telecoms policing agreement that states that parties to the agreement must agree to prosecute all such behavior with vigor, and that convicted scammers must be sentenced to the same length of term they would get if they were located in the country that they victimize. Failure to adhere to the agreement would mean direct dialing from the offending nation to other countries of the pact would be suspended. Any legitimate calls from that country would go through a live operator who would check the caller's bona fides (for a price) before making a connection. Even if the caller is the PM of Pakistan, eh.

I can't talk. I laughed so hard I pee'd myself one time as a teenager. A buddy and I were with our parents at a convention down in Myrtle Beach. It was the off-season, early Dec.

It was the Hilton hotel, and they had a game room with pinball machines and other machines down in the sub-basement. We got in there, and on a lark, discovered that unplugging and plugging back in one of the machines would cause it to spit a couple of quarters out of the change return.

Well, we did that and cleaned it out, with a damn bag of quarters.

Now, my buddy got an idea. It was an atrium style building with the room floors and mezzanine area opening over the lobby. Well, we'd drop quarters on the lobby floor and watch people find them and pick them up.

Some of them acted pretty sneaky. One guy was in a group with a couple of friends and stepped on it, and made some excuse to try to get his friends to go ahead so they wouldn't see him get the quarter.

Anyway, I got so tickled at those antics that I pee'd myself. The trouble was trying to stifle the laughter. I didn't want to laugh loudly and call attention to us standing above them.

We played a trick on a woman with the those quarters. She came in the lobby, walking toward the elevators, and came upon one of those quarters.

She looked around, and then walked in front of it and turned around and bent over to pick it up. At the moment I tossed another quarter to land a bit closer to the elevators.

She turned around and then saw the second quarter. That stumped her. Where the hell did that come from? She bent over to pick that up. At that point, both of us tossed several quarters a piece ahead and behind her.

As she was standing up, she saw a bunch of quarters rain down on the carpet. As her head went to look up, we just fell down on the floor behind the little wall and railing.

It's raining quarters, she thought.

Well, it does. He has personal minions controlling all government contracts ( a lot of the economy over there) and the government controls hundreds of companies.

If you are not loyal, you are punished. You can't be neutral or apolitical. No company reliant on government for business or licenses can do business with a small company that is not regime-friendly. The effects are widespread.

Billions of EU Euros are pocketed by Orban and friends. If you are not a friend, no chance. I find it amusing that the EU knows this, but are powerless to stop it.

Orban was a leader of the Young Socialists in college, his father (who has become very wealthy) was leader of the Communist trade union.

Later on, after the quarter tossing fun, we nearly got ourselves in serious trouble. We got some "Snap 'n' Pops". They were this noise maker things that would pop on impact. "Pow!".

Well, we got ourselves a couple handfuls of those and went up to one of the highest floors. I got on one side of the atrium railing and my buddy got on the other. There were some people sitting in the lobby talking, and then a group came in through the main door. At that point we tossed 'em, and then cut tracks to the side stairwells, me to one and my buddy to the other.

"Pow, pow, pow, pow!", followed by some screaming. We disappeared into the stairwells and high-tailed it, with plans to meet up again.

Well, that got hotel security out. Guys in suits going all over the place looking for the disturbance.

That was back in the early '80s. Today, that would likely be a big deal. They'd be afraid it was gunfire or some explosives and probably get a damn SWAT team and no telling what else out.

511 I don't know whether Orban and Co. are as corrupt as Miklos asserts. I have no basis to dispute it.

That is of interest, but of more interest - at this stage - is whether Orban's impact on the Hungarian and regional situation is positive/desirable, or otherwise. Meaning, essentially - resisting/defeating the insane EU/Merkel mass migration atrocity.

My impression is that he (and probably others) are in fact very positive in this key respect.

To borrow/not terribly mangle a framework from Jeanne Kirkpatrick, the corruption Miklos describes might/might not be fixed or reduced over time, or with different leadership. The demographic/cultural alteration of Hungary, and its subordination to stupid, corrupt EU dynamics, if either occurs - and which Orban seems to be effectively forestalling - would be irreversible.

513 His most praised policies simply reflect the opinion of 95% of Hungarians.

But these days, in the European Union, stating the opinion of 95% of Hungarians requires courage.

Asking whether allowing one million non-Hungarian speaking economic migrants from the Middle East and Africa to migrate to Hungary benefits the people of Hungary, is considered an illegitimate question by Europe's elites.

And, I find I've posted the wrong article - the one I was thinking of was considerably longer, and discussed all the corruption associated with Orban, and his earlier association with Soros. I'll see if I can find it.

I had to look up "Snap n Pops". That's a brand name for the things, "bang snaps" seems to tbe most used generic name. It's some small grave wrapped up in paper, with a tiny amount of silver fulminate, about
80 ug.

They are harmless. The silver fulminate produces a tiny high explosive detonation, but it's so small that all the force is easily buffered by the gravel. The only effect is the loud pop caused by the supersonic detonation shock wave.

You can pop them in your hands with no damage.

The "your papers" began before the refugee invasion in 2015 (I was there, and wow). That was a political godsend to Orban, whose popularity was being crushed by the general knowledge of pervasive corruption.

To Rhomboid's point, Orban finds it useful, and he is useful, in attacking the target rich EU. The EU has repeatedly threatened to suspend EU funding (about 11% of Hungarian GDP) but actually haven't and can't. Orban has done an infinitely better job than May, perhaps the most catastrophic PM the UK has ever had.

I just enjoy watching the bastards go at each other.

518 sking whether allowing one million non-Hungarian speaking economic migrants from the Middle East and Africa to migrate to Hungary

Nobody wants to immigrate to Hungary. Everybody wants to go to richer countries, especially to Frau Merkel's wonderfully diverse garden party. But they had to go through the neighbors' back yards and across their carefully tended roses to get there.

There was genuine fear when they were coming through in 2015. The main train stations in Budapest were refugee camps. The Austrians closed the borders. Hungarian exports to West Europe (the basis of the economy) couldn't get through. The Arabs and such didn't want to stay, and the Hungarians wanted them out.

But Merkel and Macron intend to force a significant number of the refugees heading for Germany and France to go to the poorer states in the EU, like Hungary and Poland.

After all, if no-one wants to immigrate to Hungary, then Orban's refusal to accept immigrants would be irrelevant, instead of being treated by the EU as a huge issue.

523 Spoke with two couples today, one from Austria, the other from the UK (wife was Slovakian).

Interesting, and not clear whether discouraging/encouraging, to hear them talk about their anguish and anger at things sentient Americans will find familiar - the collapse of the press into pernicious propaganda, the social and official (de facto or literal) suppression of individual freedom of thought and expression on select issues (mass migration!), and how much so many thought-criminals like them in Europe were looking to the Brexit struggle for inspiration and hope, or panic and even thoughts of escape.

The Austrians, unsurprisingly, were happy to share how they were fairly seething with righteous anger at the way demonization as "Nazi" was freely used by the idiots to suppress discussion (he was a fairly serious student of the Third Reich and Anschluss history) of the insane EU and Merkel policies.

The Brit (he was law enforcement) and Slovakian couple seemed quite serious about bailing out of the UK (Canada, US) if Brexit were successfully nixed by the political class - something to be decided this year.

Remarakable, and depressing, to see the parallels with trends in the US. They all believed that there was a (very) silent majority throughout Europe that was as appalled as they are with the situation, but they were disgusted with the passivity and submission to EU/political class/media "shaming".

In real terms, it's been irrelevant. Orban kept numbers low from the outset. The EU bitches about it (ostensibly) because it displaces immigrants into central Europe.

The real reason is that it puts the lie to the customs union and the open borders. Hungary just does an end run to get around the rules, keep the immigrants out, and remain in the customs union.

Brussels hates that sore thumb.

Well put, but the EU pays Hungary to be a member. If I were Orban, I would play the same game, but hopefully in a much less corrupt and repressive fashion.

Many things from trains to parks to schools have been made nice with EU money. For example, this is where I will be later in the summer, all redone two years ago with EU money-

No, there isn't. He has stated that he will never leave office, although he may do a Putin and transfer power to the President from the PM and do that job (Orban has said that he plans to be another Putin).

The government now controls everything from the media to kids' after school sports (national government, not local) as well as having re-nationalized key parts of the economy. As long as the legitimate scare of invasion lasts, the people of Hungary, not having won a war or even a battle in centuries, will put up with the negatives.

It's Lake Balaton (north shore).

Rhomboid-yes, the invasion was Middle Eastern/part African. The Red Army left in 1990. Until recently, scars of WWII and 1956 were still quite visible on buildings in downtown Budapest.

But the tens of thousands of latter-day Ottomans roaming around on their way to Germany is what sticks in the memory of Hungarians.

The Turks occupied Hungary for 150-250 years. You can still go to original Turkish baths in Budapest.

You never hear too much about Franco oppression. The style of government kind of lends itself to it. I assume there must have been some, the Spanish civil war was a nasty thing and would have also lent itself to reprisals.

552 Franco played a weak hand expertly - he resisted German pressure to enter the war, sending only a volunteer division to the Eastern Front (which had the side effect of killing off many of the most pro-Nazi Falangists).

It was widely expected that Franco would be forced from power by the Allies at the end of the war, but Franco used the start of the Cold War to take advantage of his undoubted anti-Communism and strategic position to offer military bases to the United States in 1953, giving the United States a stake in the continuation of the Falangist regime.

All NSAIDs can wreak havoc with your digestive tract. They are all (including aspirin) COX enzyme inhibitors. That has something to do with inflammation, but it also has to do with the stomach lining cycle and can weaken it.

It varies a lot with the individual. One molecule may be horrible for one person, but not too bad for another.

With my RA, I've taken them all just about at different stages. I've been taking them for hell, 15 years or more. One, Mobic, got to really tearing my stomach up. I take Aleve now, which doesn't seem to be too bad.

In general we have gotten a bit too complacent about monolithic businesses vs consumers.

What seems odder to me is that somehow, if people are engaging in the contact willingly, that somehow makes the business right or moral.

I am not sure exactly where I come down on that. Sure, people have the right to spend money however they please and you would think that they would flee a business which does not really allow them to own the product they purchase (I am thinking of software or apple not allowing people to fix/modify phones they paid $1000 for.)

On the one hand, we seem to have allowed monopolistic practices, but on the other, people are feeding those monopolies.

You know, this reminds of what is dubbed the "liberal paradox". I would call it the "libertarian paradox", because that better represents the meaning of liberal in the classic sense.

Anyway, it's a theorem (proven) that says no economic system can be simultaneously Pareto efficient and respect a minimal standard of individual freedom.

In a nutshell it shows that a free market will conflict with individual freedom/choice.

This is something that the libertarians and anarcho-capitalists refuse to accept. And the corporate conservative types don't give a shit. They will choose Pareto efficiency over the individual every time. And even worse that Pareto efficiency (monopolism).

Example: Ayn Rand supported monopolies.

Rand considered creating a monopoly to be an individual freedom. If Rockefeller wants to corner the market, why he should be free to do so. It's his right.

Well most human systems are inevitably stricken by the fact that humans are inherently flawed. So you will never have a perfect system, no matter what the socialist assholes say. You just have to have one that tries to use the inherent foibles of the human race to it's benefit.

The liberal/tarian paradox goes along with the famous Arrow's Impossibility Theorem. It sort of deflates the notion of "democracy" and fairness.

Arrow basically proves that no voting system can be "fair" and consistent when there are more than two choices.

Further it shows there is no such thing as the "collective will" of two or more people (when there are more than two choices). Even if ever individual is rational, no system can ensure the collective choice function is rational in all cases.

Note that we developed a two party system, in effect forcing just two choices on the electoral system. That was not an accident... They didn't know Arrow at the time, but stability drove the system to that.

Well, as Arrow shows, and later theorems expanded on, no system can be devised that won't have a flaw. The only question is which flaws you prefer.

Some systems are better than others -- they don't screw up as much/as bad, but they still will screw up.

Another corollary of this shows why war can never be eliminated. In certain cases, there is no optimum choice. No system that can satisfy everyone. That is, no optimum. No matter what the system determines, you will have group who hates the result, and the in fact is harmed by the result.

If that group gets too big, then you're at a deadlock. War is the result. One side had to destroy the other to go forward.

I'll give you a trivial example of this deadlock situation. Supposed you have three people and three choices. The choice is what to have for desert, A, B, or C, Apple pie, blueberry or Cherry.

Those three people have a circular cycle preference. Person 1 loves A, is meh on B, and hates C. Person 2 permutes that, loves B, meh on C, and hates A. Person 3 loves C, meh on A, and hates B.

No matter what voting system you use, 1 guy is going to be happy, one is meh, and the other is miserable.

That's a such a deadlock. The group is incompatible. The solution there is simple. You let each have which pie he wants.

But in the real world, you can't always do that. And that is when things get messy.

621 Give me all three pies.

Posted by: Deplorable Ian Galt, pie-monger at May 15, 2019 03:53 AM (ufFY8)

622
To boil the above example. Any voting choice will result in 2/3 being OK, and 1/3 being hopping mad, miserable.

You can see that none of the three choices is the best. They all have the same outcome, 2/3 all right, 1/3 pissed.

Thus, there is no group choice. No collective will. Just three different groups, any two of which can band together against the third.

This is a fundamental result and shows that no collective can every be completely consistent and well behaved.

Is that 8 oz. cups? Probably ... my mugs are probably 10 oz. when not quite full. I drink 3-4 of those, so low risk.

His second fall was on the Midway, no where near as far as a Nuke Carrier. I can't recall what ship the first one was on.

I remember one time we pulled into the Carrier piers at Cubi Point in the Philippines and the Enterprise pulled into the next pier a few days later. Standing on the flight deck I had to look way up to see the flight deck on that Carrier. We were dwarfed.
