Hals family.jpg

Family Portrait
Franz Hals

Hals is well regarded, and certainly some of his work is wonderful. But he is clearly a notch or two below the greats (Vermeer and Rembrandt), who managed to inject more emotion and humanity into their works...something that is lacking in some of Hals' paintings (this one included).

68 Anthony Weiner wrapped up the last leg of his prison sentence for sexting an underage girl on Tuesday morning, walking out of a Bronx halfway house a free man.

"It's good to be out," the disgraced former congressman said. "I hope to be able to live a life of integrity and service. I'm glad this chapter of my life is behind me."

Weiner, who will still be registered as a Level 1 sex offender, had called the halfway house on Creston Avenue home for three months following his transfer from a Massachusetts lock-up as part of a federal re-entry program.

69 They are the spitting image of their mother.

Now, there's an interesting phrase.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc.
----------

"Some commentators have suggested that 'spit' may be a corruption of 'spirit', but that appears to be fanciful and isn't backed up by any early examples of 'spirit and image'. The allusion is more likely to be to someone who is so similar to another as to appear to have been spat out of his mouth. That idea, if not the exact phrase, was in circulation by the end of the 17th century, when George Farquhar used it in his comic play Love and a bottle, 1689:

"Poor child! he's as like his own dadda as if he were spit out of his mouth."

No version of the phrase is especially old. The earliest reference is in Andrew Knapp and W. Baldwin's The Newgate Calendar, 1824–26:

"A daughter, ... the very spit of the old captain."

This pre-dates any 'splitting image' citation by a good hundred years, which tends to rule out the latter as the source. 'Spit' or 'dead spit', with the meaning of likeness, appears in print several times in the 19th century. Here 'dead' means precise or exact, as in dead ringer.

Other languages have their own versions of this phrase; for example, French - "C'est le portrait craché de son père" ("He's the spitting portrait of his father") and Norwegian - "som snytt ut av nesen paa" ("as blown out of the nose of"). These are difficult to date and may pre-date the English version or may derive from it. "

71 I really enjoy Hals' paintings. His models have lively facial expressions that bring extra life to his portraits. He is also capable of astonishing detail, especially in fancy clothing, skin texture and backgrounds. His portrait works make me think of excellent photography in the way he captures a 'moment'. Today's painting is a mild example. Instead of the stiff, formal poses often used inthis period and earlier, it captures a pleasant scene of a happy family.

Thanks, CBD, as always. This is a great painting to start the day.

I think they're actually winning, but that's because the media makes it look that way.

If Trump wins in 2020, this country will lose a significant portion of its mind and it will be another rough 4 years. Depending on what Trump does to MAG in his 2nd term dictates how it will go after that. He's driving the media crazy and more and more Americans are realizing the media is what it is: the strong arm of the DNC.

The origins go straight to the top.

Remember, Susan Rice wrote a CYA memo on her way out the door saying Obama wanted the investigation to handled by the book.

So ipso facto, Obama knew about it and ultimately, per Rice authorized it and directed it.

So if this investigation is legit, his first request for an interview should have been Susan Rice, then following precedent per the Flynn interview, invite Obama to have a friendly chat, no lawyers needed, it's just a conversation.

211 161 ... there were a lot of portrait painters in 17th century holland. i was talking to someone (who actually knows what he's talking about) who said that in the dutch golden age, everybody, low to high, had a painting in their house. and many of that prosperous people memorialized themselves with portraits. (there were also lots of landscapes, genre scenes, still lives, etc., too).
Posted by: musical jolly chimp at May 14, 2019 10:09 AM (Pg+x7)

The Holland School of the Dutch Baroque saw the development of the lower genres (still lifes, landscapes, portraiture, etc.). The region was strict Calvinist and obvious religious art was frowned upon. It was seen as Catholic and idolatrous. The artists and patrons had to go with something else or make the religious messages more abstract and allegorical. Since Holland was pretty prosperous at the time, art patronage was seen as a sign of wealth, stature, and good taste -- as it still is.

As I said in the morning thread...

Now that Barr has started an investigation into the origins of the Trump spying operation if it doesn't go to straight to Obama then ultimately
it will be a failure.

The first thing that will be needed to
be looked at is the authorities, remember, Susan Rice wrote a CYA memo saying Obama wanted this done, by the book, so the authority has to start with Obama.

Remember this operation used surveillance,
espionage, spies, agent provocateurs in multiple countries, contractors, cash payments, honey pots, intelligence operatives of multiple 5 eyes countries, and on and on.

Does anyone understand the authority chain and coordination necessary for the CIA/FBI to conduct
these operations both domestically and abroad?

It's massive.

And if it were done by the book the paper trail should all be there.

So it must start at the top with Obama and like a many tentacled octopus work it's way out to the lowly field agents.

Let justice be done though the heavens fall.

Perhaps if I were ever lucky enough to see Hals in person, I might change my mind. Unfortunately, my opinion is based solely on printed, flat reproductions. Never the best way to judge art.

Democrats and the media - but I repeat myself - are desperate. Their
immediate, absolutely critical mission is to try to get rid of AG Barr.
When he was confirmed it was assumed by everyone in the professional
political sphere that because Barr was in the Bush administration that
he was a just another political hack, and no one to worry about.
When
they discovered - much to their horror - that he was serious about
actually enforcing the law - the panic sounded like the sailors on the
Japanese carriers at Midway when they saw the American dive bombers
attacking from overhead and realized their air cover had been pulled
miles away shooting down ineffectual torpedo planes at sea level. All
they can do now is throw up some weak flack and hope they can dodge
Barr's bombs. It couldn't be happening to more deserving people.

The student Communists eventually long-marched their way into power: Obama, Clinton, Holder, Brennan, Ohr, Comey--even Christopher Steele, campus Commies all.

They essentially revived COINTELPRO and aimed it in the other direction, at conservatives, opponents and Donald Trump.

That was the messy beauty of the spoils system.

Everyone knew that the next party was going to wipe out the previous party's loyalists in the government as much as possible (usually actually no more than about 10%) and replace them with their own hacks and lackeys.

Far from a perfect system, but far preferable to an entrenched bureaucracy that is always on just one side.

ABOUT the urban and university progressive bastions that rule states which are otherwise conservative:

We have seen that Electoral College method works as advertised in balancing power among unequal states.

Why is this not the model for all state levels of government as well? A state electoral college comprised of counties, perhaps, would balance the majority of rural areas with the minority of progressive enclaves.

And, surely, I'm not the first to think of this, but I just haven't seen it suggested anywhere. (Not like it's a realistic possibility anyway.)

It looks sicker and sicker by the year, but I've looked at it closely and determined that the way it's balanced, it's going down in his yard when it goes. Last big storm about a week ago, a big limb came off, one that *could* have landed on my garage if it had fallen in a particular way; but somehow, it snagged a little where it broke, swung, and catapulted itself right into the middle of his yard. Posted by: garrett at May 14, 2019 10:38 AM (Nud5/)

And this is true of many states. Michigan has three areas that flip the state blue. Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Flint. In the 2018 election, John James R, Senate candidate, won 68 of the 83 counties in the state. What he didn't win was 15 counties in the above areas, and he didn't win Macomb, Oakland, and Ingham counties.

Ingham county includes MSU, Oakland and Macomb have numerous small colleges, Ann Arbor is hopelessly Democrat now with U/M and Detroit speaks for itself when an accomplished black business owner cannot win because he has R after his name.

So people outside of the state believe the entire state is Democrat Liberal, when it's not true at all.

387 Someone on one of the last couple ONT threads posted an excellent analysis of how , if we had popular voting to determine the president, instead of the electoral college, the metro NYC area, comprised of 321 square miles, would determine the president for the rest of the 1 M plus square miles of the country.

Hopefully they will see this and post it again. Well worth the short read.

If the University can charge you Out of State Tuition, you should NOT have the right to Vote in Local Elections.

Over 90% of oceanic plastic waste comes from 10 rivers in Africa and Asia. The West's contribution could be lost in a rounding error.

In the USA, less than 2% of plastic waste is mismanaged, and the vast majority of that doesn't end up in the sea.

CA isn't going far enough. They should ban disposable cups, plasticware, plates, napkins, fastfood packaging.

Basically, Californians should be walking around with a tin cup and a wood bowl hanging from a lanyard around their neck, and they should be made to eat with their hands. All of them.

Moreover, in their ignorant excitement to report on Leftist royalty, they publicized something that newsmen are supposed to conceal, it damaged Thundershart badly, it led to possible legal jeopardy for people in the nomenklatura, and they'll have to live with what they did.

Most, not all. Tons of trash on the ocean floor.

For years the ocean was used as a garbage dumping ground. It was standard practice for places like NYC to dump garbage in the ocean up to the 1990s.

This isn't a global warming scam. We have abused the oceans for a long time and while the US mostly stopped other countries did not.

433 This isn't a bad painting but the composition is bad. The wall behind the family duplicates the family, tall to short, and the movement of the eye is very simple. There's nothing pulling your vision to any part of the painting except them. They have some life and personality to them, but its as if they were individually posed (which they almost certainly were) rather than an organic whole as a family. Four strangers dressed and posed for the image. Technically its brilliant, but he's missing the gifts that the very best had, I agree.
