55 Another Scandi artist from the late 1800s and early 1900s. I hadn't heard of the artist but she fits in that category, like Carl Larrson, that I enjoy so much. Pleasant scenes, great use of natural light, realistic figures that clearly show the artist's intent (think Norman Rockwell without the exaggeration), and a touch of Impressionism in the background. That last for me puts more focus on the figures conveying her purpose.

Thanks, CBD. Here's a new to me painter to learn about.

66 I have a friend with a childhood friend who has become a reasonably successful horror novelist. Horrorstor, My Best Friend's Exorcism, and Paperbacks from Hell writer Grady Hendrix grew up next door to my friend in Charleston.

I've met the guy a few times, and I'm apparently considered within the circle of friends to a limited degree.

I finished my second draft of George Washington and the Shadow of the Ohio Valley, and I decided to throw caution to the wind. I sent him a copy in an email filled with, "I know you're super busy" type platitudes. I expected a polite refusal or demurral.

Instead, I got an affirmative. He's going to read it sometime this summer. I'd been holding off on stuff to send to him because it needed to be just the right thing to get his interest, and something told me that a horror story set in colonial America would do it. And it seem to have done just that!

Dear, Sweet baby Jesus, please have Grady read it.

And, in thanks to him, I'm going to pimp his books a wee bit:

Horrorstor:

My Best Friend's Exorcism:

Paperbacks from Hell:

A non-fiction history of the horror paperback boom of the 70s and 80s. It's a really fun read, and its beautifully produced.

Category error. Swedes, Danes, Norwegians, some but not all Finns, Greenlanders from about 800 to 1200 AD, seasonal or multiyear Vinlanders from the same era, are all Norse.

English, Irish, and coastal inhabitants of the North and Baltic seas are Norse-raped.

Hitler's art is all city streets & architecture. It's very reminiscent of Utrillo. And yes, there are no people on the streets.

He could not handle perspective properly, because he lacked academic training.

However, I've read that some art historians feel that the work he submitted to the Vienna Fine Arts Academy (school) showed promise-- particularly his architecture studies.

He sold his own hand-colored postcards in Vienna, btw-- one step from outright begging.

DC is the most incestuous place on the planet. Everybody is screwing everybody, and much of the screwing is conflict of interest screwing.

Ie regulators sleeping with regulatees. Presecutors sleeping with defense attorneys, congressional staff sleeping with lobbyists. And reporters sleeping with everybody.

Posted by: mnw at May 13, 2019 10:14 AM (Cssks)

Hitler was a classicist who painted in a Romantic style (an *interesting* combination), but his best work was of ruined cities caused by WWI. He was very skilled in watercolor, a difficult medium. He had such promise -- too bad for the rest of the world.

243 I just got a ping on the Apple story.

Apparently it's brought by developers who complain that Apple requires iOS apps to go through the App Store and takes a 30% cut of the revenue. The suit calls this monopolistic.

I'm not a lawyer. I'm kind of having a hard time though of thinking this monopolistic because these aren't consumers complaining, but software developers who complain about the 30%. Seems to me the App Store requirement offers value there in that people are looking at the apps to be sure they do what they say they do, as opposed to the Android method which is a free for all.

Different business model, but I think there's a justification behind it. That the SCOTUS vote broke out the way it did also tends to bias my thinking.

Hitler claims in Mein Kampf that the academy did him a favor by rejecting him because it helped steer him to his true course, but it doesn't sound plausible even out of his own mouth. He was crushed.

He was quite competent at drawing buildings and the academy said he should go be an architect. It was almost as if he were talented but lacked humanity.

250 229 SCOTUS, by J. Kavanaugh, holds that iPhone app consumers can sue Apple alleging anti-trust violations (and not just the app creators). He is joined by Ginsburg Breyer, Sotomayor, Kagan.
J. Gorsuch, joined by the remaining justices, writes the dissent.

Last week Rep Doug Collins said he would be releasing the remaining testimony from 53 closed door Congressional interviews about the Russia collusion scam. One that I am really curios to see is Shawn Henry, the head of Crowdstrike and a former top FBI agent in the cyber crimes division.

To this day nobody in the government has actually seen the DNC servers. Every claim that the Russians did it is based on a report Crowstrike made.

There was one movie I saw--I think the name translated to "Under the Bridges"--that was done near the very end of the war. On the surface it met all the requirements the Nazis had, but when you looked at it even slightly hard, it became clear that this was a very subversive, even anti-Nazi film. It amazed me how it got past the censors. I can only assume that most folks just went through the motions at that stage.

Despite my best efforts, I did not burn anything but wood in a fireplace and maybe two hamburgers.

The grill was not...expertly used. I suspect I put the coals in the ash pan instead of putting them elsewhere. This is what I get for not reading instructions.

But nobody got hurt, no jerks showed up and the only hobos we saw were each given a hot dog since they had adorable dogs with them.

We had a lot of good people stop by and I had a great time meeting them and feeding them.

I want to thank Nurse Ratchet for being the engine and butt-kicker that made this happen and kept communications going.

I want to thank all the folks who helped clean up and pack up at the end. Thanks guys, you're all Quality.

I don't get the anger that people have that Dany's arc was ruined because she was supposed to be merciful and the Breaker of the Wheel. They've been foreshadowing her turn for at least 2 1/2 seasons, perhaps since the beginning. She was ruthless very early on, but had no power. After she got power, her advisers were able to sway her. In the battle with the Masters at Mereen, she wanted to burn the whole city down then, but Tyrian stopped her. Ever since she's been in Westeros tho she's threatened to burn it all down. She's slowly ignored her adviser's advice and she's become more and more violent. Losing Jorah, Reagal, Jon and her claim all at once put her over the edge, as well as Tyrion being so obviously torn between loyalty to her and his family. She was going to turn.

397 Since the Nazis got to filming their Titanic sinking I would say they finished it. There are many interior scenes in A Night to Remember that came out of this motion picture.

Anti-Nazi sentiment was not widespread. Though when the first Himmler selected director made a comment about if the Nazis will win; he was promptly ratted out, tossed in jail, and then committed suicide.

Because it had Himmler's backing, it did consume vast resources. Plenty of film stock, plenty of extras, and one ocean liner* as stand in for the ill-fated luxury liner.

*At the conclusion of the war, this ocean liner would be the scene of yet another Nazi atrocity. The ship was loaded with thousands of concentration camp prisoners and deliberately left visible so Allied bombers would attack. And yes the ship was bombed and as survivors tried to swim to shore, the Nazis machine-gunned them.

I have to agree about the inappropriateness of a comment that refers to children - from the looks of the painting, the girls are 12-14 yrs. old - having sexual relations with adult men. My opinion is informed not only by having knowledge of laws regarding statutory rape, and just common decency in general...but by the fact that I'm a trained artist and as such, far from a prude.
I have seen enough naked stranger bodies in the course of my four year schooling to satisfy the nekkid lady/man requirement of every single moron here, and then some. Interestingly, none of them were minor children. Even the free-wheeling atmosphere of art school understood there was a line that must not be crossed.
I have contributed to the bawdy humor on this blog more than a time or three. Upthread Muldoon commented, "ace's blog, ace's rules", of course that is true. However in this climate of nanny-stater SJW's combing through every blessed word that is published on anti-Left blogs, I'd imagine that the blog owner would be concerned about commentary that looks like it is advocacy of sex between adults and children.

SPOILERS

Posted by: Kris at May 13, 2019 11:11 AM (OyyDO)

==========

Yeah, this was a payoff that had been very well built up.

Ever since the beginning, we knew that Targaryans are either crazy or nice. Her brother was crazy, so that meant that she was nice, right?

Wrong, bitches. She had it within herself to be the mad queen from the beginning. She had influences to keep it at bay, but she kept losing them and pushing the rest away.

Last night's episode might be my favorite episode of the entire run.

423 Learning history is so important, unfortunately, students aren't taught to understand why. I know I wasn't.

I read an interesting thing about brain development years ago.

I didn't get history as a yute. It was a bunch of disconnected dates and places and kings and wars and stuff. Now I'm a rabid fan of history and it's almost all I read. Because now I see a flow, I see patterns, I see that events don't stand on their own but are outcomes of things that have been brewing.

The thing I read (I think it was a NYT thing from the 80s) said that youthful brains don't make the connection between historical events and it's only mature brains that see the patterns.

I swear, it's like two movies stitched together.

The first half is a mystery with supernatural or religious overtones (I think it was piggybacking on Catholic-sploitation or off the success of the Exorcist).

Then there's a plot twist involving aliens and the second half of the movie is just crap where the events of the first half of the movie are seemingly forgotten.

I HOPE there is a good story behind the making of that crap fest.

Watch 'Frailty' instead, which has similar premises but has the focus and the courage to take the plot seriously and see it through. Fuck, 'The Servants of the Twilight' did this story better.

Pretty sure the Ghost Rider sequel did those honors.

She was wicked creepy in that movie. It's hard to imagine but she played evil and conniving very well.

That movie was heavily suppressed for 20 years or so, because it came out right about the same time as Kennedy was assassinated. And the entire plot, that the assassin was a commie agent working on behalf of highly placed elements of the US Government, made a whole lot of people very nervous.

462 Presumably, you have read Churchill's 'The Gathering Storm'.

Wasn't the actor who played the Equalizer in the television series in an earlier Wicker Man movie? I know there was a pre-Cage version of it, but it, too, was nothing to write home about.

Lansbury makes Ernest Stavro Blofeld in the early Bond films seem like pale amateurs.

Vincent Price topped all of them.

If the director would have been smart enough, I'm sure he would have had Cage thrown into a dumpster just before his skull lit up. He's probably kicking himself now, thinking "damn, why didn't I think of that?"

469 youthful brains don't make the connection between historical events and it's only mature brains that see the patterns.

When I was young I thought that we had outgrown all of that bad history stuff and had it all figured out. No more Nazis, no more depressions, no more commies, no more Al Capones or John Dillingers. The answer was peace and love and the Holy Four, John, Paul, George and Ringo, were leading us to the new utopia. Although I didn't think of it in these terms, I basically thought we had defeated original sin.

I may have been in error.

Actually the first Wicker Man is one of my favorite Cult Movies of all time - it's wonderful! Christopher Lee is marvelous as Lord Summer Isle. He also did an interview once where he related that the version that we have is a very chopped down cut due to studio incompetence (long story) At least 45 minutes of the original has been lost forever.

472 Watch 'Frailty' instead, which has similar premises but has the focus and the courage to take the plot seriously and see it through. Fuck, 'The Servants of the Twilight' did this story better.

Frailty is an awesome movie.

And I HATE Nicolas Cage in pretty much everything except Raising Arizona. I haven't seen The Wicker Man/bees thing but that scene in 8mm with him screaming at the mom "do I have your permission" or whatever bullshit was just cringeworthy.

The difference is that in the film Lansbury's husband, then running for president was, like his wife, posing as anti-communist conservatives, but were actually secret communists themselves.

Hillary could never be that clever.

474 Sinatra suppressed "Manchurian." He got sold the project, and backed it, because it was anti-McCarthy. The finished product gradually revealed itself to be something else. All together. Sinatra was ashamed of being duped.

And the the oddest thing happened. Sinatra changed.

475 Vincent Price topped all of them.

Aw hell yeah. I met him once, at an art lecture. Don't bother making fun of The Candy Kid's acting career. He was way ahead of you.
