The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The first is rooted in history. We’re a state that’s had one-party rule for the better part of 85 years. That rule has resulted quite often in legislation and laws that are passed…that really do not do the taxpayers of the state and the residents of the state any good.” Councilman Donald A. Fox

Quote II

“It’s official — Bernie Sanders is working for the Republican Party."

“You think a guy in jail for murder can’t have his rights taken away? What is it about being in jail that you’re missing? He is in jail. He can’t go outside. The toilet have no seats. Seems like not voting is the least of his concerns.”

“But hey, I guess Bernie wants the guy on Death Row to vote. It makes sense. He could pull one lever before we pull the other. It’s almost tailor-made for an RNC ad.” Greg Gutfeld

Quote III

“No one should have to fear going to their place of worship, and no one should be targeted for practicing the tenets of their faith,” Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA)

Of course they did, did you think they would rule differently? Virginia judiciary votes to keep their little kingdom private, very private.

The Virginia Supreme Court has issued eight new rules bringing new exemptions to the Virginia Freedom of Information Act that broadly block access to judicial records.

Virginia judges have been considering their new legislation since last year and call their move an act to “protect the administration of justice, the deliberative process, and the privacy of its judicial officers.” They’ve also asked the public to submit their comments on the then, proposed rules.

American politicians are notorious for knee jerk reactionary legislation. Sri Lanka is not far behind.

From today it will be illegal to wear items of clothing that cover people’s faces in Sri Lanka after the government issued an emergency law. The new rule came into effect on Monday, eight days after the Easter bombings of churches and hotels that claimed the lives of more than 250 people at several locations. The law was brought in at the orders of President Maithripala Sirisena who has been warned that more militants remain on the loose despite dozens of arrests.

Name your price
A ticket to paradise
I can't stay here any more
And I've looked high and low
I've been from shore to shore to shore
If there's a short cut I'd have found it
But there's no easy way around it

Light of the world, shine on me
Love is the answer
Shine on us all, set us free
Love is the answer

“A young man is fired up about what the future holds and I can keep that fire burning.”

Single John has only ever dated older women and says he finds them more “sensual”.

He said: “I’ve been asked and playfully ridiculed by people who have known me for a long time.

“Why do I date older women? I like confidence in a woman, I like self-awareness and with the older women I’ve dated there’s always been a more sensual, more compassionate side.

“They are very receptive to the kind of lover I am.”

Jumping for joy. Police officer busted.

A police officer is facing an inquiry after causing fury when he was spotted jumping up and down on a trampoline during a drugs raid.

The policeman was filmed in a garden in a residential street in Coventry by a neighbour and was seen taking off his kit belt before performing stunts while fellow officers laughed.

West Midlands Police confirmed it has launched an investigation into the incident which 'appears to have fallen short of high standards'.

States where the death penalty is allowed are having difficulties in implementing it because of drugs. Perhaps they need to import Canadian doctors. They don't seem to have problems killing people.

The report says that about 1.12 percent of all Canadian deaths were caused by euthanasia, a number that is increasing every year. No wonder. Efforts are increasing to normalize lethal injection as a way of death — and soon we are likely to see the killable caste expanded in Canada to include children, people whose deaths are not “foreseeable,” those with dementia who asked to be killed in an advance directive, and perhaps, the mentally ill (as happens regularly in Netherlands and Belgium).

Does facial recognition software work? A civil lawsuit against Apple says it doesn't.

An 18-year-old from New York is suing Apple for US$1 billion, claiming that a facial recognition system at its shops falsely connected him to a series of thefts.
Ousmane Bah, who was arrested at his home in November, claims the warrant included a photo of someone else.

All of that virtue signaling and a large carbon footprint to boot. A German study reveals that electric vehicles emit more CO2 than diesel vehicles.

Electric vehicles in Germany account for more CO2 emissions than diesel ones, according to a study by German scientists.
When CO2 emissions linked to the production of batteries and the German energy mix - in which coal still plays an important role - are taken into consideration, electric vehicles emit 11% to 28% more than their diesel counterparts, according to the study, presented on Wednesday at the Ifo Institute in Munich.

Mining and processing the lithium, cobalt and manganese used for batteries consume a great deal of energy. A Tesla Model 3 battery, for example, represents between 11 and 15 tonnes of CO2. Given a lifetime of 10 years and an annual travel distance of 15,000 kilometres, this translates into 73 to 98 grams of CO2 per kilometre, scientists Christoph Buchal, Hans-Dieter Karl and Hans-Werner Sinn noted in their study.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease Creative artist spurs municipality to repair potholes.

Local residents in Teesdale are loving a protestor who was finally able to figure out a way to get two potholes fixed by the city. After a year of not being addresses and fixed, one person decided a better way to get their attention – to draw big penises around them.

And it worked!

You've heard of the old saying in regards to "digging a hole". It is supposed to be figurative not literal. Genius Award Winner.

A man in northern Mexico had to be rescued after he accidentally trapped himself in a hole that he dug so he could spy on his former girlfriend in violation of a court order to stay away from her, authorities said Sunday, the AP reports. The Sonora state attorney general's office said the 50-year-old man had spent days digging the hole in Puerto Penasco, a town on the Gulf of California, only to become trapped and require assistance to get out. The man had been ordered to stay away from his former girlfriend due to domestic violence charges and he is now in jail, authorities said. The newspaper El Universal said the man dug a tunnel under the woman's house.

31 So, I mentioned this in an earlier thread, but...

A friend of mine moved up here from down South earlier this year, with the goal that I'm eventually moving in to start breaking away from my toxic (and I kind of hate that term because it's kind of left-wing loaded) family.

Well, he had an accident while on a diving (oxygen tank, not pool) practice, and blacked out under the water.

Apparently almost died, is in the hospital about 2 hours out from here, his mother and stepfather flew up.

I've got no idea what sort of shape he's in, he said he thinks he'll be OK but he said they had him on an incubator to try to clear his lungs out (if he got any terminology wrong, let me know. I don't want to be accused of bullshit because I was given inaccurate terminology).

So, this is kind of a stressful time, to have things up in the air like that, when I'd already started the process of moving my things, and I already feel horrible enough that something happened to him up here when he basically moved up here in the first place to help me out (and also be around other friends of mine).

Had he stayed where he was and not moved up here, this likely would not have happened.

I had to break down and buy a damn new lawnmower. It was a hoot. This afternoon, I put a new set of blades on the old one, and then replaced the coil (flywheel magneto armature) type. The coil went out last year, and the cheap Chinese replacement lasted about year. This one looks to be higher quality.

Then I put a new air filter and foam prefilter on it and was in the process of putting in back together.

Miley then walked out in the shop, picked something up and asked, "What's this?". I thought it was just some piece of junk she found that had been kicked out or something.

Then it hit me, and I looked at it. It was the damn drive idler pulley for the transmission. I jacked it up again and looked underneath, actually looking between the deck and the drive area.

That pulley had seized, flown apart, and just happened to fall off when I had last pulled it back in the shop. This allowed the drive belt to wear up against the stub shaft the pulley mounted on. Also, the decrease in tension allowed the tensioner bracket which is part of the foot "clutch" assembly, to move too far. It had stripped all the fins off the little fan that cools the transmission.

At the point, I said fuckit, and bought a damn new lawnmower.....

But I kept it running for 24 years.

That's what doing things like changing the oil, filters, greasing it, and maintenance will do.

I've put about 4 or 5 sets of blades on the thing over that 24 years. Oh, and every year, I would sharpen them.

Upon a hidden lane, in deepest wood,
Was born a child who play'd as no one could.
His genius was pronounc'd e'en from boyhood
His name was Jonathan Bernardo Goode.
How good when Goode begins to play the lute,
Sing ho, sing high, sing heigh!
They took him from his humble neighborhood,
To play withal the king's court, if he would.
By queens his gift was lauded as it should
No one was better, nay 'twas understood.
How good when Goode begins to play the lute,

246 The house I grew up in has been a sad husk for nearly three decades, a weird monument of the past in my small hometown. One of the big stories is that there are finally plans to raze it and put in some kind of medical/therapy office. I'm okay with it. When I was a kid it was surrounded by trees, and a nice lawn, and a gravel driveway, and Dad's awesome garden (which my brother and I had to weed every morning before we could dart off doing whatever we did all day).

Not sure why I bring this up. Just feeling nostalgic, I reckon.

That old parts guy passed away a few years ago. We'll never see his like of parts guy again. Back when I was a kid and on into my 20s, parts guys operated like this.

You could bring them old part, and they'd find you a replacement. If you knew what it came off the better, and if you had a part number, even better, but they could find something.

These people now can't even be bothered to go back and check stock and compare. If it doesn't pop up on the computer screen, or hell, smart phone, now, you're SOL.

This parts guy once had a coil for an old Farmall tractor a far neighbor was needing. It was, hell, I don't know old, still new in the box it came in.

The guy was trying to find it, and someone said, hell try ol' Bobby (that was his name), he's got all kinds of shit.

Old Bobby went back in his vast stock area, which was built up over decades and decades, and found that coil in 5 minutes.

He only had one, though, and probably couldn't get a new one, but he had it.l

It does happen. My Dad's Mom's side of the family had a big house in Norman, Indiana (they were Normans.) There is a picture of the entire family out in front of the house in the late 1800s (my great grandfather is a little kid in the front row.) It was converted to a hotel, then bought by some asshole who let it go completely to crap. Then they razed it and it has been an empty lot since.

I never saw it, even in it's dilapidated state. Dad said when he was a kid, he slept there a couple of times.

Inevitably, Milius was a center of attention on Wednesday night. Chris Kobin, who helped organize the event and featured Milius in the documentary Hollywood Don't Surf!, of which Kobin was a producer, stayed out of the limelight as one guest after another - Jeff Berg, Gary Busey, Billy Katt - paid court at the Milius table. And there he was, grizzled as ever, working somewhat to overcome the effects of a stroke he suffered in 2010, and wearing a bright red cap that said: "Make Surfing Great Again." Clearly, he is still at odds with his industry, his era, the prevailing political winds - with almost everything except for that very short time when, like his avatars in Big Wednesday, he lived on and for the beach.

Last night I broke my ankle very badly. Was on the bottom of the front porch stairs and thought I was on the sidewalk when I I stepped forward and broke it.
I have all kinds of wires sticking out of the foot and ankle and have to come back in two to three weeks for more surgery. If anyone sees fan ask her to add me to the prayer list it's going to be a long recovery.

Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at April 29, 2019 11:26 PM (aKsyK)

Only to the extent that they take solid fuel and make gaseous fuel from it. Wood gas generators operate by pyrolysis: heat breaks down the long chain organic molecules in the wood, releasing methane, water, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and some other hydrocarbons. The mixture is readily combustible, and can be burned in a car engine, suitably prepared.

Coal gasification heats up coal, and reacts it with steam under pressure, to make synthetic hydrocarbons plus hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

410 I have a Lawn-Boy from 1976, magnesium deck. Very lightweight so easy to maneuver. With all the BS they put on the mowers these days, they need to be self propelled. The Lawn-Boy 2-strokes were a little more expensive back in the day. They work well and will plow through heavy, thick turf that will make a 4 stroke choke and leave a better cut.

One of the things "they" did, was reduce the maximum allowable RPM of 21" blades. The standard for decades was 3600, the feds said no more than 250 mph blade tip speed or whatever, so modern mowers are crippled.

It is important to check for rocks, wires, toys and such in the lawn before mowing. But if you can adjust your mower RPM back up to 3200 - 3600 RPM you will be well pleased.

I resurrected another little Homelite XL2 saw yesterday. Snagged it from the dump. Only part missing was the oil tank cap. Recoil starter was busted. Fixed the recoil (so I thought, heh), retapped the holes for the recoil housing screws, because stripped out, and fixed the bar tension screw. Put fuel in the tank, gave it one shot of gas in the air intake, and it started right up. Got it to idle and rev up, and back to idle OK, too. Took it outside, and tried to cut a piece of 2X6, and found the chain to be very dull. And the recoil pulley became unhooked from the spring again. So I dumped the fuel out, tagged it as "runs, needs work" and put it on the shelf. I have five of them, now. They are handy little saws, and demons for work, if you maintain them.

I think they have a festival every year where they paint Main Street blue or gold or something.

Ethanol is the bane of small engines. Hell, I don't know if the newer shit is certified for it now, or not, but small engines carbs and fuel systems can't handle the shit. It's the water it pulls out of the air.

Now, 2-cycles, with oil/gas mix. Something they started doing that really helped was the little primer bulbs. Those things will circulate gas(/oil mixture) through the little carbs and get good gas into them fast.

Small amounts of gas will go bad over the winter very fast.

I had a chain saw the wouldn't hit a lick. I smelled the gas and poured the shit out, then put new mix in and it soon fired right up.

The 2 cycle oil does have gasoline stabilizers in it, and it will last longer than regular gas, but it still will go bad. Smell can usually tell the story.

Whatever you do, do not let ethanol anywhere near a 2-cycle gas/oil mix engine.

433 Hikaru, it (the accident) isn't your fault, as others have said.

Natural to feel guilt (however misplaced), if you were really looking forward to what you all had plans together, now delayed.

All the guilt may mean is how very much you want to keep forward on your mutual plans, so sure, remind yourself to be patient on those, but don't feel bad that your friend encountered a random accident in the process.

Think back to where you met--if THAT never happened, this wouldn't either? Don't kick yourself, does no good

The old Lawn Boys, from the 1950's and '60's were good, but very basic machines. Fairly quiet, too, as they had had a huge exhaust muffler integrated into the deck. You had to service that, too, as the engine's exhaust ports could become choked with carbon, to the point the engine would scarcely run.

Later model Lawn Boys had a reputation for the top bearing on the crankshaft wearing out badly. That would throw off ignition timing, as the point gap became irregular, and eventually the crankcase would suck so much air past the top seal, that the engine would lean out and quit. I saw a lot of them with that problem.

Don't confuse ethanol with lead/unleaded. I don't know when they phased out tetraeythl lead, but it was a very long time ago.

There was a possible problem with very old engines and the valve seats. The lead compound alleviated that somehow, and so they needed to used harder valves and seats.

But any engine built since the '80s can handle unleaded gas.

It's ethanol that it is the problem.

And mostly they can handle the ethanol, as long as you burn it off promptly, and completely. Leaving the ethanol-based fuel in the tank, or worse, the carburetor, for long idle periods, is inviting trouble.

I had to run my generator Saturday for a few hours. When I shut it down, I closed the fuel petcock, and let it run until the carb ran dry, and it quit.

The shelf life of ethanol mix gas is about 4 months, give or take. That's why they have to mix it in later, and can't (easily) store the mixture.

Sitting there, it will pull moisture out of the air until it saturates and the ethanol/water mix will separate out, into the bottom of the tank, where it will corrode and crud up everything.

I discovered that the hard way in big truck of ours we don't run much.

Also marinas usually have ethanol free gas, but it may not be convenient to get to the pump.

Battery powered tools are great if you want big power for short periods of time. Drills, power saws, impact wrenches. Not so suitable for moderate power for a longer duration, like lawn mowers.

If the layout of your yard will permit, look into a corded electric mower. They have been around for decades, and work well for those people whose mowing needs don't range far from an outlet/

Be well all.

Sir, the screws in my left ankle are in awe of the complete hardware store you've just had installed in yours!

Prayers UP, sir. Fired for effect.

You get to the "rehab" stage, and we've gotta talk. Seriously. I went through some hell, and I'll try to share some experience, insights and maybe you can glean a tip or two in advance.

Either way, it's gonna sux a lot more before it sux any less.

Drop me a line, email in my nic. I'll warn you of some things to be wary of as you move about your house. VERY wary.

Done wrong, you'd end up on the floor like me, writhing in pain and hurting too badly and suddenly to even scream.

Take advantage of my having been through it before you, m'kay?

I got the full boat when I got glasses this last time. Had not been in 10 years, so I felt like a whale.

I will say one thing that made the biggest difference was getting the lightweight lenses. Damn that tech has improved. It is amazing how light my glasses are considering how heavy my prescription (although I think I got the lenses too small in the frame, as I get some distortion.)

The glasses do work well at night. I am not sure that is down to the coating or not though.

516 In fairness to the Stihl, it's 30+ years old, and has had ethanol gas used in it from time to time. I did clean/rebuild the carb a year or so ago, and have been using ($) Sthil pre-mix (to avoid problems!) so did not expect trouble.

I've never had the carb off of the Ryobi, so the needle diaphragm may have stiffened up. Who knows?

At any rate, I've got a whole stable of two strokes, and I weary of fussing with them.

549 8 Top photo is fake. Nobody would be hanging their legs over the side in that sea.

True dat, but I didn't even see the rail guy at first and I knew it was fake. In seas like that, there would not be a shred of sail up, and the crew would be down in the cabin in fetal positions, saying Hail Marys so fast their lips would be getting chapped!

That being said, carrying some sail in rough water can help stabilize the boat. Once we were sailing alongside friends in another sailboat approaching a point of land known to produce rough seas even with little wind. Since we had children on board, we dropped sail, started the engine, and my wife went down below to make sure the kids didn't get too scared. Dumb! A few minutes later and I was trying to hold down my lunch while listening the screams and smashing of dishes from the cabin! Meanwhile, 50 feet away the couple we were cruising with were laughing as they sliced smoothly through the heavy chop under sail!! Never did THAT again!

680 I use water in a a regular spray bottle , that's it and elbow grease/ time, . it's not hard, and it's worth it.

If you have uneven surfaces because of joints not taped well etc, just use drywall mud to float flat a little sandpapering, and walla.

pristine clean flat smooth ceilings.

690 So far, I've spent the last month painting 3/4 of the house, patching holes, and pulling carpet, pad and *layers* of tile all the way down to the hardwood floors, which some idiot had GLUED TILE to sometime in the mid-60s. The oak hardwood has all been refinished as of last Friday. Now I have to strip similarly in the kitchen and put in vinyl plank tile.

I've also been cutting down trees and doing a lot of outside maintenance. On an ominous note, I found a hole - an actual HOLE - in the roof yesterday. Looks like I've got some rot in the sheathing to be repaired.

srsly it's not difficult , but out of shape it's harder for us.

I like the image of Bald Mountain. Now that you mention it I had heard that Rimsky-Korsakov "rewrote" the piece a little when he directed a performance of it.

Willow, do NOT swap out a breaker with a higher rating UNLESS you rewire that entire circuit. That could invalidate your homeowner's insurance in case of a fire claim.
