The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

This is America...people basing their beliefs on the fable of Noah and Ark, or their interpretation of Sodom and Gomorrah...rather than science or logic...If you are basing your morality on a fairy tale written thousands of years ago, you deserve to be locked up...detained for your utter inability to deal with reality...NO, we are not obligated to indulge your irrationality in the name of your religious freedom...but we will provide you a very comfortable room, against which walls you may hurl yourself hourly if your choose. Knock yourself out....seriously, knock yourself out, completely, for weeks at a time...I'm sorta kidding but not by much...I don't believe lunatics like this should be locked up, but I do think they have to be politically destroyed, utterly rendered helpless to the cause of pluralism and democracy ...the world is not theirs. They have no right to impose their bullshit on others. They can either change, or shut the hell up, or practice their special brand of crazy in their homes...or go away. Their choice. And this argument applies to any fundamentalist religionist of any faith who thinks they have a right to impose their beliefs on a secular, pluralistic society. Go away. Tim Wise

Quote II

Biden’s all that’s left. Now they’re going after 100-year-old guys. When are they going to start going after all the gold-digging whores?… This why any reasonable, decent human being is never going to run for President. Because of you assholes. You millennials. You’re the rats.” Bill Burr

Quote III

"I think one of the key things that we need to have is an internal audit system within the National Rifle Association. I think it's very important that the board reassert more of its control and power based upon the bylaws so that we don't have any of these, you know, surprises that pop up." Former representative Allen West (R., Fla.)

Quote IV

According to Robert Mueller, a president can be guilty of obstruction of justice simply by exercising the powers of the president — if he does so with “an intent to obtain an improper advantage for himself or someone else, inconsistent with official duty and the rights of others.”

Wow. That’s a new standard for a president’s Article II powers! I don’t see it in my pocket Constitution. Ann Coulter

Is the Pope trolling for Jesus?

In a move that many have interpreted as a shot across the bow of US President Donald Trump, Pope Francis has donated $500,000 to help Central American migrants stranded in Mexico as they try to reach America.
The aid is specifically intended to assist 75,000 people who arrived in Mexico last year as part of six migrant caravans.

The donation will be taken from the Catholic Church’s Peter’s Pence fund, from church collections around the world. Peter’s Pence said in a statement that aid to migrants by governments and private individuals has dropped as global media coverage of the crisis decreased.

Your weight, your secret, not for long? Airlines may consider passenger weight for battling "Climate Change".

If you're worried about this data being made public, Fuscone says that the company plans to enable the passenger to retain direct control of their own data so that they can delete it once it has been “employed in the interests of fuel efficiency.”

Until some company comes along an puts out an incredible bid for this information to target the airline customers.

The problem with bureaucrats? They have the power to make the "Little Guy's" life a living hell.

The Obama Justice Department prosecuted U.S. Navy veteran Joe Robertson for digging ponds on his Montana property to fight forest fires, resulting in the then-78-year-old going to federal prison for 18 months starting in 2016 and being fined $130,000, The Daily Signal reported.

The 9th U.S. Circuit of Appeals affirmed the ruling the following year, including the jail time and a requirement that the $130,000 be deducted from Robertson’s Social Security checks.

Had Mr. Robertson been illegally running guns and causing deaths, he would have a job in the White House.

We now have reached the point where everything causes climate change. Even listening to music causes the world grief.

Storing and processing music in the cloud depends on vast data centers that use a tremendous amount of resources and energy.

Devine translated plastic productions and the electricity use to store and transmit digital audio files into greenhouse gas equivalents (GHGs). …

The GHGs caused by recorded music are much higher today than in the past. In 1977 the GHGs from, recorded music were 140 million kg. By 2016, they were estimated to somewhere between 200 million kg and over 350 million kg.

If you're a Muslim immigrant in Sweden, you can do just about any damn thing you please and not be deported.

Two lower courts had ruled that the man, a 33-year-old Somali citizen, should be deported after serving a jail sentence for rape, but the Supreme Court overturned this decision while extending his jail sentence by four months. The reason for ruling against deportation was that his ties to Sweden were considered to be strong, although two of the five Supreme Court justices argued the seriousness of the crime outweighed this and that he should be expelled.

The man was first found guilty of rape by Linköping District Court, after he forced himself on a woman he did not know while they both stayed overnight at a mutual friend's apartment.

Once upon a time Great Britain was the greatest country in the world. The UK is no longer great and continues to slide down the slope of ridicule. Employers in the UK are considering banning handshakes.

It may seem harmless enough, but handshakes in the workplace could become a thing of the past under new physical contact rules being considered in the U.K., according to one human resources expert.

Kate Palmer, an associate director of advisory at the HR consultancy firm Peninsula, said employers in the U.K. may enact a complete ban on physical contact in order to avoid expensive sexual harassment suits.

“Does shaking someone’s hand go too far?” she told the U.K. Metro newspaper. “They may just say ‘no contact at all’ because there’s no grey area. It makes it simple, but it takes away affection, which in some ways is a sad thing,” she told the U.K. Metro newspaper.

Feelings. Nothing more than feelings. Once again the "aggrieved" make a mockery of tradition.

California State University's campus in Long Beach is ditching its longtime mascot amid accusations of racism and officially moving to pick either a new symbol or have no mascot at all.

The university ditched its "Prospector Pete" character in September after criticism that it was offensive to indigenous people.

Just what the hell doesn't offend these f*cking snowflakes?

You cannot yell "Fire" in an occupied theater. Neither can you yell out spoilers during a movie.

A man in Hong Kong was reportedly "beaten up" after deciding to yell major spoilers to fans waiting outside a cinema where Avengers: Endgame was being shown.

According to Deadline, which cited reports in local media, the unidentified man spent a few moments shouting plot developments at the fans before they attacked him.

It isn't easy to give up some of your workplace benefits to help others. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

When teachers at Mae Jemison High School in Hunstville, AL., discovered one of their colleagues had no more sick days to tend to his infant daughter who was diagnosed with cancer, they donated their sick days to him.

David Green is a history teacher and a father to a 16-month-old girl who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia six months ago. His daughter is getting treatment 100 miles from home and she needs him to be there when he can.

12 Hey, Cal State Long Beach. That's my local university.

They have an interesting tradition of being very PC in some ways, but thumbing it in others. I remember for instance that every time I've been on the campus, they have tons of signs up promoting their Christian club.

Also, instead of officially hating religion, they have an Interfaith Center. (And, it was there long before 9/11.)

Just had a thought... at my current part-time job I help folks in Orange County get their business officially recognized, via publishing Fictitious Business Name statements. (Anyone here ever do it?)

Anyway, the fee is still low for California to do so... $23. How would people here feel if I actually filed an FBN for Pinochet Tours, thus making it an actual legally-recognized business?

- Pinochet Tours
- Pinochet Helicopter Rides
- Pinochet's Trips You'll Never Forget
- 1973 Travel Bureau
- Big Splash Entertainment

etc etc... ;-)

44 Employers in the UK are considering banning handshakes.

There is a subtext to this, of course, which is that many Muslims in the UK refuse to shake hands with a member of the opposite sex.

As with other customs, this practice is correlated with the percentage of Muslims in the population - refusing to shake hands is still rare in the United States, but is increasingly common in Europe.

There is still some pushback - a week ago, France's highest administrative court upheld a decision to deny a French passport to an Algerian Muslim who refused to shake hands with officials during her citizenship ceremony, and Switzerland fines parents up to $5,000 if their children refuse to shake hands with teachers. One suspects this pushback will become rarer as the Muslim population of Europe continues to increase.

65 Sharkman, can't agree. It's nonsense that "conflict of interest" would have any effect on prosecution of what were actually criminal abuses of power - all of which began prior to Sessions' swearing in. The "logic" there is .... well, there is no logic there.

So any AG must recuse himself from any situation involving criminal abuse of power by anyone subordinate to him? What? Not my hobby to follow the history of analogous situations, but this would mean no DOJ employees (all of whom are ipso facto subordinate to the AG) have been investigated, prosecuted, and convicted in the past? Because I am unaware of any AG recusals in remotely analogous situations.

He also doesn't understand how dramatic a change from all of previous human history the Christian message of loving your enemies was.

Before Christ it was nothing but strong men and murder ruling the weak. Then humans started thinking differently, which is where real civilization arose from, eventually resulting in representative democracy/republicanism and a modicum of occasional peace.

In other words, he is another ignorant jackass with shit for brains.

I saw the Avs beat the Panthers in 1996 in a bar in FC, because we had just moved from Montana and did not have cable TV yet.

The year they beat the Devils (2001) we were on vacation driving through eastern Kansas. I had a St. Louis station playing a Rockies-Cards game in Denver, and the announcer kept saying, "judging from the crowd's reaction, the Avalanche scored again."

We got a motel room in Joplin MO, and I got to watch the 3rd period.

When the American Indian Movement launched a campaign to get rid of the Florida State "Seminole Indian brave" mascot, the Seminole's elected tribal council invited AIM to F off.

Ask first next time, said the Seminoles' governing body. We LIKE our longstanding ties with FSU A LOT-- we get free publicity for our casino & airboat rides, AND for about a century FSU has had a special scholarship program for the Seminole Nation.

Furthermore, we see nothing pejorative about a handsome young Seminole brave galloping his pony around the football field. That is an image we wish to project, not suppress.

146 88 The ARC

244 in europe they often use racks to dry clothes instead of a drier. they may have a washing machine, but they'll hang the clothes on a light, wooden drying rack, sometimes one that drops from the kitchen ceiling. while a lot of americans go "ewww", there's actually a scientific basis in the theory of evaporation.
Posted by: musical jolly chimp

It's because Euro apartments don't have room for dryers, the washing machine is in the bathroom or kitchen, and electricity costs 3.5 times more than in the US. Very few Euros have clothes dryers.

LOL. If you don't believe in some sort of meta-physical structure - some purpose to existence - then there is no such thing as "morality".

These idiots drive me nuts with their utter stupidity. I wouldn't mind them being so impenetrably dumb if they weren't a bunch of self-important, self-righteous pricks who like to act as if they had more than two brain cells.

Some atheist dipshit who doesn't believe there is any meaning to existence is going to lecture me about morality? Make me laugh. His universe doesn't include anything approaching "morality". 297 Storing and processing music in the cloud depends on vast data centers that use a tremendous amount of resources and energy.

Storing and processing (?) music takes almost no memory and very little bandwidth. Period. It's friggin music. You could stream it over old phone modems it takes so little bandwidth.

This guy trying to equate storing some small files on a gigantic cloud system with the cost of the cloud system, itself, is much like an article I read where they were trying to make Samuel L. Jackson out to be the biggest box office star ever by saying that every dollar of any movie he was in was totally credited to him (even though he very rarely carries any movies - the few he's been the main star of have been generally been box office turds, even if they were good movies). But he was in the first Jurassic Park and that made a billion dollars, so they put that billion on the total of "tickets sold to Sam Jackson movies". Most people can't even remember that he was in the first Jurassic Park - that's how small of an impact his role had. And he sucked in the first Jurassic Park. His role as cool, brilliant scientist was really a sort of joke. Friggin Newman did a better job in that respect.

So, saying that music on the cloud is such a huge cost because the clouds are huge and eat up tons of electricity is a joke. All the music collections of everyone in the world, together, don't add up to one Florida Man's porno collection in memory size and bandwidth/CPU use.

308 Made a tourtiere once time (spiced Quebecois meat pie). It was fantastic, good as the real thing I've had there, or from Quebec expats. I even had one funky tomato plant at the time, that yielded a bunch of green tomatoes, from which I made the relish (forget the name) that goes perfectly on the pie. And then there were the awesome chicken pot pies I made (hmmm, secret might have been the recipe, which included bacon). Gotta get back to doing those.

Posted by: Miklos, I like to be in America

Euros generally live in places much, much smaller than Americans. Not royalty, of course, but your average person. And they have a lot less bathrooms. The French didn't even start building bathrooms into their places until recently (and they still don't really know how to use them).

The US is the only place that had the concept of one bathroom per bedroom - at least in the count.

323 I recollect that the 68-69 Camaro Z-28 (*sigh, those were the days*) spoiler became effective at around 140 mph. Part of the homolgation game though, so sold as part of the package.

Ah yes, the headers came in the trunk. And GM's shovel-mounted front subframe was a big hinge in the structure.

You could get Ford's horrid linkage-boosted power steering on a Boss 302, which just about destroyed the feel of the car.

I've recently been driving past a '68-69 Barracuda fastback. It's on a flatbed and tinworm has taken most of the lower body, but it's restorable given an appropriate wallet.

There is an original '71 Z/28 under a cover a two blocks from here. It's gone nowhere for the past five years, and every time I walk past it I'm tempted to put a check in their mailbox and see if they bite, which given everything else I need to finish means I go out of my way not to go there.

331 My exciting activity for this evening is sorting through about a gallon of Canadian pennies (now obsolete, but still legal tender).

1996 and prior are mostly pure copper, with a melt value of about 2 cents each, U.S.

Newer ones, up to final year 2012, are copper plated zinc and/or steel, and melt value is less than face value.

And there are a few years with partial mintings of "oddball" coins with decent collector value.

So I am sorting into 3 containers: one of face value coins to roll and take to the bank, one of copper coins for scrap value, and one of possible collector coins.

If I cannot read the date, they go into the first bin, of face value coins. If they are that cruddy, they are unlikely to be of collector value even if they happen to be one of the few oddball types. And if they are really copper, well all I lose by doing that is about a cent.

The Winnebago have made great progress over the years. A lot of Winnebago money comes from their casinos, but they also have a number of other businesses -- all employing Winnebago. I believe most of the profits are plowed back into the business, but that's after wages are paid, schools and health services are improved, and better housing built. 402 That's one of the unstated facts when the Left and environmentalists worship Europe - that living standards in Europe are objectively much lower, no matter what games you play with exchange rates to try to make Europe seem richer.

To have a standard American single-family house with a backyard, and a couple of family cars, would place you well, well into the upper classes in Europe.

Contrary to what you have been told, Europeans have much smaller dwellings and are much more dependent on public transit because that's all that they can afford - not because they have piously voluntarily rejected a suburban American lifestyle.

A cocky Ana Marie Cox is telling Lawrence O'Donnell, who is nearly pissing himself with excitement at the impending Hillary victory, that even though we're going to win tonight, we have a lot of work to do and a lot of rooting out of social evils because Trump actually got this far. On Oct. 25, he scored in the top 1 percent of 43,900 candidates who took the FDNY written exam, and then on Jan. 1 passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test, the Post reported.

But on Feb. 1, he learned his age disqualified him. Under FDNY rules, a military service veteran would have had to have been no older than 35 as of April 5, 2017, to qualify. As of that date, Donovan was 35 years, six months and 25 days old, which meant the city rejected him, according to the Post.

These people are NOT well, they are not rational, their expectations of government in general are completely unreasonable. This is not natural, they have been innoculated against facts, logic, and reason. It is criminal what is happening in this nation, what is being done to people. Yes, they are victims, but I will not hesitate to put one right through the running lights if they fuck with me, and I've little doubt that's coming. I didn't say I liked it.

Posted by: nerdygirl at April 29, 2019 12:56 AM (+lVUW)

492 I can well imagine losing an election is excruciatingly painful, but it comes with the territory.

Mrs. Clinton was never a genuine politician, seems to me. One big pile of scripted bullshit her whole "career". Consequently she was incapable of going out there, and thanking her supporters. And let's face it, only True Believers are going to line up for something like that, for the most part.

In fact this should be prima facie evidence to her loyal
supporters she is not qualified for any public office. They were being used, and when they were no longer useful, well, fuck them.

Maybe some of those tears at the Javits Center were recognition of that fact. Let's hope so.

I don't believe that she was drunk, and I'm sure she was "dissatisfied". Even if she was drunk, however, or regardless, at some point in time she made a cogent and lucid decision to start drinking to excess, and said "fuck those people, I'm not going out there."

When Podesta went out I was afraid they were going to try and litigate. I inferred from the whole thing there was enormous pressure on the networks not to make the call, in order presumably for the democrats to "deliver the vote".

Did the people he would be overseeing know, when he was appointed, that the Trump admin now knew who was spying, thanks to Rogers?

If Trump/Sessions/etc knew, and Strzok/Page/etc did not, that could be quite a setup.

627 The ruling in which "yelling fire" was mentioned is Schenck v. United States. They said it is not "protected speech" however this was later overruled. The belief now is that you can yell it and the gov can not stop you from yelling it, but you can be held accountable for injuries after the fact.

628 Bruce...yah...you know, we haven't mown YET, and it is super long. We meant to deal with it this weekend, but you know how that went, what with the snow. Well, the first mow will be two mows. Six inches then three.
Posted by: lizabth

That rain/snow we got on Saturday really made the lawn pop. Due to a foot problem. I can't do the mowing so much anymore. I had wanted to get a rider, but my wife says "no, I love to do it and want the exercise"
We'll see after this first mow

Well, Mr. Wise, all officially atheist societies have been complete failures.

I asked this the other day. What are we going to have when we give up Western Liberal Enlightenment? It appears the choices are Theocratic Aristocracy or a Militarized or Nationalistic Socialism.

631 @625 Exactly right. The stoic philosophers helped bring me to the Christian faith, oddly enough. I sent my sons lots of Seneca for their birthdays last year.

Strictly speaking, there have been a very scant few of these.

634 620 You getting thunderstorms over your way, Bruce? It's storming here good, with lots more on the way.
Posted by: lizabth

No thunder yet, just the rain. Lotsa rain, with even lotsa more, an inch and a half, tomorrow.
I'll need a baler behind my mower.
Posted by: Bruce at April 29, 2019 07:04 AM (8ikIW)

Yep, the classic steady, soaking rain here in the city. I wouldn't even mind if it were 10-15 degrees warmer.

635 Haha, Bruce..yeah..that first one is gonna be a tough one. You may get that rider out of it!

636 Yes, cold, heavy rain on a Monday. Such a treat. Oh well. I've lots of baking to do, so might as well fire up the oven. Take care, all!

I'm hoping this will take care of the last of the road salt and schmutz from the winter.

After 4 rounds, I finally got the back acreage mowed so it's neat looking. The weather was so wet in the fall and winter it became overgrown.

641 The irony of Hillary supposedly mimicking Trump when reading a portion of the Mueller report is delicious. As close as she will ever get to being the President.

648 Keep in mind the leftist mentality, their President perpetrates murder, molesting, rape, treason, even jihad and they are to be seen as messiahs. However a pro-America, God and Country candidate has no right to be a President whatsoever.

649 Regarding the story about handshakes being banned in offices by UK corporations and how ,apparently, this means the British are on a ridicule slope;in the US corporate culture men cannot even be in a room with a woman unattended lest there's an accusation!

Isn't the US example worse?
Isn't the US even more ridiculous than the UK?
You Americans like to sneer at Europeans but often the situation is much more egregious in your polity than ours.

650 Virginia Schools Claim "Thousands of Students In Virginia Public Schools... Identify As Transgender," Report Says
______

How many "trans-women" are just guys trying to take advantage of a fad to get girls to undress and play with their totally female penises? When dealing with that age group I find that this approach rarely fails to show the real motives.
