Man Who Brought Lighters, Butane, and Gasoline into St. Patrick's Cathedral Arrested; He's a "Philosophy Teacher" Who Had Just Booked a Flight to Rome
Here's what we knew as of last night: A "New Jersey Man" arrested with filled gas cans inside St. Patrick's cathedral in NYC. When police stopped him, he claimed his minivan ran out of fuel.
I don't see any plausible reason given for bringing gasoline into a church."As the man was turned, police say gasoline spilled out onto the floor. Security then notified nearby police who questioned the man outside the church and took him into custody.Now he's been arrested for attempted arson -- and he'd been arrested at another church earlier in the week, after refusing to leave at closing time.
"Police say the man was carrying over four gallons of gas, two bottles of lighter fluid and two butane lighters."
Monday is of course when Notre Dame was burning -- and assuming the church's closing time was in the late afternoon or evening, he would have been attempting to remain in a church after seeing Notre Dame burn all afternoon. Had he been inspired? Was he up to something there, too? And what was he planning to do in Rome, a city famous for cathedrals? Why did he buy a ticket last-minute, when it's so expensive? And was it only a ticket, singular, as the article says -- a one-way trip? I'm going to take a guess that his philosophical inquiries focus mainly on the areas of atheism and anti-clericalism. (Update: Actually, that might not be a good bet; I'm not sure if he is anti-catholic or anti-religious. He might just be a depressed incel loon.) Update: The Heavy says that the NYDN reports the ticket to Italy was indeed a one-way ticket.
A 37-year-old man who was arrested Wednesday after entering St. Patrick's Cathedral carrying two cans of gasoline, lighter fluid and butane lighters had also been arrested at a New Jersey cathedral this week and had booked a flight to Rome, the New York Police Department said. Marc Lamparello, a college teacher, has been charged with attempted arson, reckless endangerment and trespassing, according to police. "There doesn't appear to be any connection to any terrorist group or any terrorist-related intent here," said John Miller, the New York Police Department's deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism. ... Miller said surveillance camera footage showed Lamparello circling St. Patrick's several times in a minivan Wednesday well over an hour before he parked outside the cathedral on Fifth Avenue, walked around the area, returned to his vehicle, and retrieved the gasoline and lighter fluid. When he entered the church, he was confronted by a security officer, who notified counterterrorism officers standing outside. Lamparello told the officers his car was out of gas and headed in a direction away from where he was parked, Miller said. Officers found his vehicle and determined it was not out of gas, Miller said. On Monday, he had been arrested at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey, after he refused to leave at closing time, Miller said.

St. Patrick's Cathedral does. My daughter goes to Mass there several times a week after work and she's always had to go through a metal detector and have her bag searched. It's a high-profile target. I would also suspect a stepped-up presence in light of Notre Dame and it being Holy Week.
She goes to other churches too, but none of them normally have security in place. May be different this week though.

Second, I observed you shooting very well with every pistol you used. Personally, I think something like the Springfield XD or Walther PPQ - something in that family - would be good to have for that purpose. You're accurate with them and they have plenty of rounds.

I would suggest going to a gun store and simply handling a bunch of guns to see which ones you like and feel comfortable. I've done that with two different friends. At one time, I had a Taurus 9mm, but I really wanted to Glock. But the Glock was too pricey.

I own one, and if you want a very small 9mm, it's a great choice. It'll easily fit into my front pants pocket, for example, the sights are excellent, and the trigger is pretty good for a stock striker fired design.
Womens' pants pockets are tiny, though, so that may not work.
I'd still recommend something a little larger for carry if you can conceal it, as a larger gun will manage recoil much better and be easier to grip, but if you want small, the P365 is tough to beat.

Publisher lists them all as embeddable fonts. I have published 5 previous books using these fonts (and many more) without this happening. The only change is I got a new version of Publisher (2010) and now it won't properly pack them for the pdf file.
And I cannot publish my Field Guide unless it will.

Ooooh. I went and looked - Publisher will not embed ANYTHING but TTF. No OTF, PCL, anything.
Also, if you are using a common system font, the software may be set to not embed those, and you can try toggling that, if it's TTF and not embedding.

Someone asked me once what movie had the most accurate depiction of what being a lawyer is really like and I said Clueless.
I'm not kidding.
In the background in Clueless is her father and his various minions who appear to be working on a case. This involves sitting at a table and reading documents and highlighting stuff. The big romantic scene at the end has a set up of people sitting there with printouts and going through and highlighting specific calls to specific numbers on specific dates.
Yuuuuuuuuuuuup.
There are no grand court room scenes. No big speeches. Just sitting at a table, in a suit, with reams of paper around you, highlighting stuff.

From personal experience, most people's wonderful lives ain't wonderful.I could understand this shit better if the guy grew up watching Ozzie and Harriet and Leave it to Beaver and Father knows Best. The other rocking chair clan members will remember their mostly perfect little worlds where any problem could truly be solved inside the 30 minutes you were sitting eating your tv dinner, and their families were what was considered 'normal'.

Ironically enough, the majority of the philosophy professors at my school were realist hardasses who were big on careful, airtight reasoning. The few whose political leanings I knew tilted right.
One liked to go over and troll the hell out of the "Science Technology and Society" program professors (your typical collection of crazy Luddite greenies and commie nutbars) by, you know, arguing from a position of actual logic and knowledge.
Another had so pissed off the administration that they petulantly revoked his campus parking pass.
It was a science and engineering school, which probably goes a long way towards explaining this unusual situation. I graduated in 2010.

Megan McArdle (I know I know) had a post a few years ago that stuck with me. She was talking about how Kids These Days are being taught that failure is the worst thing ever. She mentioned speaking at a high school and talking to a 16 year old girl afterwards. This was in a very hoity toity school. The girl was saying how she would like to take classes in various things but she couldn't because she had to be sure she took the right courses in the right subjects and got perfect grades so she could get into the best school and then into the right graduate program. As McArdle noted, if we are telling 16 year olds that they must be risk adverse, how do you think they'll act as adults?

It's true. I was raised largely to believe this - that failure is the worst thing ever. That if at first you don't succeed, then you are a failure as a human being. The teenager is correct. Even to get into an average school with a program that has serious limits on spots, you have to compete starting in HS. Listening to a talk on getting into Ohio State's vet program, it was ridiculous. You had to have so many volunteer hours before even getting into pre-vet. In pre-vet, it you got anything less than an A in a core class, you didn't stand a chance. It was time to pick a new career.
It's a hyper-competitive environment that ironically leads to bland conformity and fear of failure.
