New Thread

The current video of the fire reaching up into the night-blue sky is gripping.

I will put something new up as soon as I find something. I've only been following this story.

In the meantime, treat this as an open thread.

More: Does Paris not have firefighting boats that could just pump water up from the Seine?

I mean... it's right there.

I kinda doubt the Yellow Vest people did it. They are Frenchies (real ones, not imported fakers), and the French love their history, and Notre Dame is an important symbol of French history.

Under a 1905 law, Notre-Dame de Paris is among seventy churches in
Paris built before that year that are owned by the French State. While
the building itself is owned by the state, the Catholic Church is the
designated beneficiary, having the exclusive right to use it for
religious purpose in perpetuity. The archdiocese is responsible for
paying the employees, security, heating and cleaning, and assuring that
the cathedral is open free to visitors. The archdiocese does not receive

The roofs are wood and there is a lot of wood (and these days plastic, etc.) inside them. I suspect the *structure* will survive (it's hard to burn stone) but reconstruction will take decades if the whole building burns. I would ordinarily say, "raze it and start over" but it isn't an ordinary building.

Old churches under renovation are at huge risk for these types of fires. Holy Week is also a huge risk... lots of people who don't usually go to church there - people have less of a sense of who "should" be there and who shouldn't. There have been a number of Orthodox Church fires around Orthodox Easter in the last few years. 2016 was especially bad. I'm not saying that any of these are terrorism, BUT it's the perfect "cover" for this type of thing.

Remember the Pali scumbags who holed up in the Church of the Nativity, taking priests and nuns hostage, pissing and shitting all over the place, tearing up bibles and books and generally destroying the place.

Europeans generally didn't give a shit about that - in fact all of the perps were given safe haven in various Eurotrash countries - and the CHurch of the Nativity was a lot older and more historical than even Notre Dame ... though it wasn't as big and didn't have as many popular movies or stories made of it.

Some rebuilding projects turn out very well. Sir Christopher Wren's version of St. Paul's Cathedral is beautiful in its own English Baroque way, even though it is not a replica of Old St. Paul's, the Gothic cathedral that was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Winston Churchill urged London firefighters to concentrate on saving St. Paul's in 1941 (it suffered two direct hits during the Blitz) on the grounds that its destruction would damage the morale of his war-torn country.

That is one answer.
There IS a line, I think. Probably not at 50%, maybe at 25% original where the nature of the thing, or person, has changed.

But I'm willing to entertain the opposite view that there is something of the spirit that continues on even if parts change.

Concrete can be affected by heat, but like you I'm not sure on stone. Fire like that I would think most of the heat would go up so the temperature on the walls may not be that bad. It won't be the same, but if any of the walls remain and have been compromised they could be supported by a light steel frame in the inside.

475 Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral had an attic fire in 2009 - here are some items from news stories at the time:

------------------------------------------
Crews were first called to Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State Street, around 5:30 a.m....

Flames were shooting from the roof when firefighters arrived quickly from the station down the street...

It didn't take long for the flames to grow feeding on the old, heavy timber in the roof. Tower ladder trucks poured the water on from outside, but without an inside attack the cathedral quite likely would have been lost.

To get at the fire from inside, firefighters had to run nearly 500 feet of hose through the front door, straight up a vertical ladder, through a three by three opening into an attic filled with smoke, and somehow make their way on narrow wooden planks.

"They had to crawl through so much - loose boards, a thirty foot drop to a ceiling 100 years old," said John Martinez, Chicago firefighter.

Early signs indicate the fire began in a space between the cathedral's decorative ceiling and the roof line, in an area just above, behind and to the side of the altar. The attic space is rich with timber trusses and beams that make perfect fuel for a fire. Flames quickly poked through the roof as water from fire department hoses poured into the building.

Some firefighters had only been on the job for just three days.

"We're well trained. We were trained very well," said Yonan Bitivin, Chicago Fire Dept. candidate...

I suppose if you fight fires in a city that was completely destroyed by fire, you just might take fighting fires seriously.

498 Halon has the unfortunate side effect of killing you if you are caught in it.

The building I worked in had the corporate data center upstairs with a Halon tank the size of a railroad car.

We were encouraged to exit as quickly as possible should a fire alarm go off.

499 Also today: Pulitzer Prize for the story about how Trump got rich through tax dodge and daddy's shell corporation. Same reason his sister retired early to avoid misconduct charges.

Come suck my Pulitzer. If there was anything there, he would be under prosecution. The reason you're here is that you're a whiny bitch.

500 It would be quite a coincidence if that had nothing to do with Madani being sentenced the same day! Accidentally?

501 I belive the church is limestome. All of that is going to spall. The heat changes the limestone to calcium carbonate.

Even if it were granite, I doubt that would survive that hot of a fire.
Posted by: fixerupper at April 15, 2019 03:42 PM (8XRCm)

Limestone is calcium carbonate. Often very pure, in fact. It is mined for that purpose. It will spall in a hot fire, possibly from water of crystallization flashing to steam. And enough heat drives out CO2, leaving behind lime, CaO. And the resulting lime has no structural strength.

505 @502 "Off, sock"?? That's it?
No, "Off, 'My Balls Must Match Exactly' sock"?
Not even a "Off, Injection is nice but I'd rather be blown sock"?

C'mon, man...

You didn't get a 'heh' on that so I'll presume no one here has been to
Lake Havasu City. People used to say he'd bought the wrong bridge.

507 Notre Dame Cathedral. Some people did something.

508 I checked, and other than floods throughout Europe, increasing terrorism, and a 27-year World War, Nostradamus didn't say shit about this.

I'm beginning to lose faith in him a little bit.

509 So, does anyone else feel like there's a metaphor alert with Notré Dame?

What with almost a millennia of multi-generational work emblematic of Western civilization burning down in a day.

Beloved wife points out also-- Notré Dame burning at the start of holy week? I'm CURIOUS how this is going to shake out. Any banlieues in the vicinity, one wonders? Purely out of my abiding love of French geography that I have just now remembered I have, you understand.

Still, nothing for it but to wait for the investigation. Should we find we know very little about how the fire started-- especially in regards to particulars of the who and why, if it WASN'T a simple construction-related fire, which in fairness it COULD be-- well, perhaps we will therefore know quite a lot.

510 As to the fire boats, they can't reach that high. Even big ships can pass through big bridges (e.gf. the Golden Gate) so the maximum height a fire boat must reach is limited.

Don't you remember the Deepwater Horizon? Now that was a fire. And the ships fighting it would never fit in the Seine. They are way too big.

512 In 1572 the French killed every Protestant they could get their hands on.Until 1905, the persecution of Protestants was a matter of French law.

I think we need to keep a little perspective that in religious terms both pro and con, that it one screwed-up country that no one should want to emulate.

It is a shame that their beautiful church burned down. I'm down with that.

That's it for me.
