AG Barr: "I Think Spying Did Occur" Against Trump Campaign, and I Need to Investigate If It Was Justified or Not

Obama, you might have heard, ran a scandal-free administration.

Except for the matter of weaponizing the intelligence community and DOJ and FBI to spy on a rival campaign in a move that makes Watergate look like a college lark.

Attorney General William Barr dropped a bombshell Wednesday, telling a group of senators that he believes spying against the Trump campaign did take place in 2016.

"I think spying on a political campaign is a big deal," Barr said during an exchange with Democratic New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Shaheen asked in a follow-up whether Barr believed the FBI spied on the Trump team.

"You're not suggesting, though, that spying occurred?" Shaheen asked.

"I think spying did occur. Yes, I think spying did occur. But the question is whether it was predicated, adequately predicated," Barr said.

Video at the link.

Chuck Ross notes that Democrats "bristle" at the word "spy" used to describe Obama's/Brennan's/Clapper's/Comey's actions.

A friend watching it tells me that liberal Democrat Senator from Hawaii, Brian Schatz, actually said he was worried/bothered that people would hear the Obama government spied on Trump from cable news, by which, of course, he meant "Fox News."

In addition, Barr said that it was unusual that the target of an alleged foreign intelligence operation would not be informed of this in a defensive briefing. Obama's spying operation, of course, went out of its way to hide this from Trump and lied to him about it.

There was news Barr would be "getting his arms around" this yesterday, but now comes word he's recruited investigators to look into the FBI and DOJ.

Attorney General William Barr has assembled a team to review controversial counterintelligence decisions made by Justice Department and FBI officials, including actions taken during the probe of the Trump campaign in the summer of 2016, according to a person familiar with the matter.

This indicates that Barr is looking into allegations that Republican lawmakers have been pursuing for more than a year -- that the investigation into President Donald Trump and possible collusion with Russia was tainted at the start by anti-Trump bias in the FBI and Justice Department.

Update: The leftwing, insurrectionist media is talking this well.

Natasha Bertrand poses as a national security expert -- but is apparently unaware that FISA warrants permit looking backwards in time through someone's communications, meaning Obama's men could spy on any communications Page had with the Trump campaign when he was (briefly) part of their advisory board.

29 Methinks things are happening behind the scenes that are making some Dems very very nervous. Obama's speech (in Germany, of all places... Hmm) was telling. He looked VERY worried.

Just looked at CNN's home page. The name "Mueller" is only on the page TWICE, both below the fold (and one was the title of a video). NYT.com has it only ONCE. Why is that? I think it's because they know the jig is up and they are running away from their previous reporting as fast as they can.

We knew they were spying on Trump people from the outset of the Flynn stuff, THEY TOLD US SO IN COURT.

Flynn was taken down by a Process crime, and the original Agents didn't even think he was lying, BUT it was illegally leaked to the Press as a political hit.

So we have our SPY agencies, spying on a Political rival, and leaking said information.

Yet somehow, no one has found who did the leaking? even though it destroyed a Man who had spent his career serving this Country?

69 Well, the first, best outcome is for all those involved to be charged and imprisoned. Hillary, Obama, Comey, Clapper, Brennan, McCabe, Strozk, etc.

Saving that, since it may be the best outcome, but also probably unlikely, is that the obvious illegality of the entire thing results in a purge of Democrats and the Trump Intelligence Act of 2020 that abolishes all intelligence agencies as they currently exist, and a re-structuring under another agency with not a single member of the existing agencies held over. Every single one has to re-apply for every job, including janitor. And a complete revision of both the Patriot Act and FISA, if not repeal.

It struck me reading through that, and looking at some of those twitter threads, that Progs have not even a clue of how much it has *hurt* them to ban all conservative thought from Twitter - and I say that deliberately, it has not hurt us so much (we've lost a time wasting useless distraction) but it has destroyed them. They spew out their venom, and they can not even conceive of the idea that there's a huge amount of thought and evidence out there that completely opposes them. From a strategic perspective, they have willfully shut down all of their intelligence gathering capabilities in the real world, and they now only inhabit their fantasy world.

And that's why they will never see - not even be *able* to see - the Real World Consequences coming for them.

It's why Sun Tzu said "He who knows not himself, and does not know the enemy, will lose every battle."

That intelligence imbalance is becoming our greatest strategic advantage in this fight. We know everything they think, everything they believe, their strengths (if we're honest), and their weaknesses.

They no longer know anything at all about us, and not much about themselves, either.

So as obvious as it is that Hillary was given a pass, and that a soft, pretextual coup attempt was initiated against Trump, I will be absolutely gobsmacked if anyone is ever held accountable. Whereas if it were Republicans who did this stuff they would already be in prison.

hillary is like Mr. hilter, she never told anyone outside her inner circle to do anything nor signed off on anything so she can't get in trouble over this FISA mess. There is no trail to even investigate there to tie her to anything. Heck even the payoff to fusion GPS was laundered through a law firm. It was a professionally done black op.

And all of her minions have been given pretty much what amounts to blanket immunity from AG lynch during the email mess, so there is no on who will turn on her.

As far as the email stuff goes, the statute of limitations has already expired for that. 5 years for most non violent Federal crimes.

Barky shot way past Watergate levels of malfeasance back in the 2008 campaign - many times over. He should have been kicked out of the campaign after that totally illegal, un-Constitutional and un-American foreign campaign tour to address foreigners paid for, in part, by fuzzy foreign governments. That should have been it.

And he should have been thrown in jail for giving money to OHIO ACORN (while it was criminally charged) and lying about it ("lighting expenses" .. about $1 million) ... and turning off the AVS on credit card transactions on his campaign web site, thereby breaking every legal and every un-Constitutional campaign finance law that has ever been ...

Yeah ... Barky blew past Watergate long before he ever even slimed into the Oval Office.

And neither will his wife, and neither will Valerie "Rasputin" Jarrod. Their day is done, as progs who counted on them to lead the "resistance" are finding out.
So there's no good sense in wasting valuable ammunition and resources on them.

Who we DO need to take out are the threats to the future - AOC, and Omar, and Beto, and all of the Deep State Operatives still in the Bureaucracy, and especially the Judiciary. THOSE are the people who threaten our future, THOSE are where we have to focus all of our attention.

No one, and no organization, ever has the resources or time to go after every target. So evaluate your greatest *actual* current threats, and focus your attention there. And keep your eyes on the future, and where you're headed, and not on the past and where you've been.

211 >>I've noticed how none of this obtuse planning would've been necessary if the GOPe wasn't a useless pile of dogshit.

Yes it would. In case it hasn't dawned on you there was a sophisticated spying plan against the Trump campaign going on for over a year before the election using the FBI, DOJ, CIA, State Department, foreign spies, etc.. It was never going to be stopped just because a couple bloggers said so and it sure as shit put Trump in political peril that had to be worked out of with an equally sophisticated plan.

What Mueller has done is exonerate Trump from collusion. A few deadeners are still hanging on but the game is over and now the payback is coming. Payback that is coming from information that was quietly collected over the last 2 years.

Shocking as it may sound there are some good guys that are every bit as smart as the people who tried to take Trump down and now its there turn.

It's so far beyond the most perverse secksual fetish you've ever heard of, that normal people cannot grasp its allure to certain types of people. It's worse that any addiction to any substance. As we're slowly seeing, it's a mental illness. Those in its thrall are willfully blind to reality and do not care who is harmed by their lust.

They are literally animals with no soul who would very easily kill you if you got in their way. They never stop to think for one nanosecond how they would feel if the situations was reversed and someone else tried to control their life. This is some deadly serious shit, people, and it will kill us if we allow it to continue in any form. Why does Trump fire everyone? He hires people to perform a task and when that task is done he moves on to the next person for the next phase.

Trump has fired more cabinet members in his first two years, 11, than the previous 10 or so presidents combined. He's a businessman and the guy who built a TV show around the phrase "You're Fired". He fires people.

I'm sure he was frustrated with Sessions because of the recusal. He was frustrated over his DHS Sect'y because she was hamstrung by Congress. I don't have to agree with everything Trump does, it's ok to disagree with him on issues. But the idea that the first Senator to endorse him, the guy who also had a counterintelligence investigation on him for Russia collusion by McCabe, was trying to sell Trump out has always been stupid.

Don't sweat it if no one gets punished. No one of consequence on that side ever fucking does. There is always time for a reckoning, even if it's at God's speed.

Losing the next election will be a dastardly punishment to their whole movement. Not to mention a potential saving of a little thing called the entire western world. Trump knows it, and he knows how to win. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Americans faith in the Justice system has taken a HUGE hit in the past few years, as this Kabuki theatre has played out.

Justice must be about what people did in the past, not what they may do in the future.

>>The GOP never even tried to hold anyone accountable for their criminal acts in the Barky junta. Never. No one.

Do you know what one of the first things Obama and Holder did when they took office? They neutered the office of Inspectors General throughout the government.

They literally made it impossible to get documents or do investigations because they made the IG for each department request information from the head of each agency. I'm sure you know why they did that.

That regulation took about 6 years to get overturned thanks mostly to the work of Chuck Grassley and Michael Horowitz who in addition to being the IG for the DOJ is also the head of the IG's association. It was finally overturned right before Obama was leaving office.

That's a big reason documents were withheld not only from the IGs but also from Congress and only started flowing again after Obama was gone. Yea, the GOP tired. We had hearing after hearing after hearing on all sort of things from Benghazi to Fast & Furious to the IRS. Shockingly, the Obama DOJ decided not to press any charges.

Go back and look at the 3 weeks in May 2017 after he was sworn in and look at what happened. Look at what he did to McCabe. Why did he not only write the justification for firing Comey, take the Trump counterintelligence investigation away from McCabe but also speed up the firing of McCabe against DOJ policy to insure he wouldn't get his pension?

And then go look at the video of Rosenstein answering that question to Jim Jordan before Congress. That should answer your question.

We don't live in times where that's possible, anymore. Too much collateral damage to let the public know what had actually happened.

"Justice" of the kind you speak of cannot be done publicly anymore - it would have to be done privately, if at all, but we haven't quite reached that point yet, either.

Except for the matter of weaponizing the intelligence community and DOJ and FBI to spy on a rival campaign in a move that makes Watergate look like a college lark.
_______________

And using the IRS to punish conservatives and groups that wanted to stop illegal voting and basically anybody else who opposed Obama's far-left agenda.

And he implanted Muslim Brotherhood operatives in the upper levels of every government department, in addition to pushing the MB-sponsored propaganda known as Common Core in all our public schools.

Not to mention implementing policies that essentially invited the full-scale foreign invasion now taking place on our southern border, at the rate of over 100,000 illegal aliens a month (103,000 caught last month alone).

That's the thing about there not being "a smidgen of corruption" in the Obama reign of error. The whole damn thing was rotten and corrupt to its core. That's why there wasn't "a smidgen" of corruption to be seen. Can't see the forest for the trees.

But moreover, I think Sessions came to believe early on that the only way to "save" both the GOP and country would be President Mike Pence. I think Sessions was willing to make that happen; in fact, he may have thought it was the most patriotic thing to do.

Eventually, it became clear that Trump was not going anywhere, so Sessions became one more useless old-guard appendage that needed lopping off.

533 So, following on from the previous thread on this...

Yes, it certainly appears that the scales are tipping to the "IDIOTS" explanation.

I mean, these "elite" "experts" seem to be utterly clueless as to how things actually do work, let alone how they are SUPPOSED to work.

I love one of the responses to Bertrand's tweet - "meeting with Russians to get dirt on Hillary seems bad".

Right. Probably worse that Hillary actively worked with the Russians to CREATE dirt on Trump, and then had the intelligence community SET UP the Trump campaign to appear as if they were meeting with Russians to get dirt on Hillary.

Meanwhile, if said "dirt" were legitimate, true, and obtained legally, I'm not sure why I should care WHO that dirt came from. Contrary to popular belief, the Russians are not actually the #1 chief bogeyman the Democrats (suddenly deciding they aren't best pals with Russia) would have us believe.

If the Russians had hacked Hillary to get her emails - which it appears they did not, as they were downloaded by an insider - then the legality of getting that from Russia (or anyone else that committed a crime in obtaining dirt) would become an issue.

Of course, that didn't actually happen. Whether or not any crime outside of breaking internal FBI / DOJ / CIA / NSA rules and policies was committed by Hillary / the DNC / Fusion GPS / Perkins Coie is an open question. We do know for a fact that laundering the payment through her law firm and not reporting it as an election expense was a crime. So, let's start there and assume more laws were broken.

Certainly this reinforces that Democrats will break the law and then project their own lawlessness on their opponents. As they have been doing with virtually everything since time began.

Posted by: deadrody at April 10, 2019 02:19 PM (svv54)

536 I have to laugh. What Barr is saying is not only common knowledge, but pitifully obvious. An investigation that occurs without knowledge of the suspect involves spying on that suspect, listening to his conversations, following him around, trying to get moles into his organization to report back.

To decide to investigate a presidential campaign is a pretty heavy lift - there should be overwhelming evidence of a problem before such an act is authorized, for very obvious reasons. The decision should be taken carefully, and in the least partisan manner possible.

Any of that happen with Trump?

Seems to me they got some pretty slim evidence, then followed it up with a very intrusive and partisan investigation. Every rule was bent (if not broken) and every rock overturned. And they didn't find shit.

Which means:

1) The rules need to change to launch such a thing.
2) Some heads need to roll.

But see, punishing these assholes severely, even if it was an honest "mistake" , will help prevent this crap from every happening again to anyone.

Why the fuck am I so careful with guns? Do I plan to shoot anyone? Nope. Because if I even accidentally shoot someone, the consequences are pretty damn severe. Cops, maybe a trial, jail time, lawsuits, guilt.

Our intelligence agencies and DOJ are loaded fucking weapons. They are life ruinators. They are not to be toyed with, or directed against an american politician at the slightest suspicion. This is a non-fucking partisan issue dumb-asses.

540 Jack: "A FISA warrant is a two-step warrant meaning you can spy on the target and on anyone within two hops from them. For all intents this meant everyone on the Trump campaign and beyond."

If i'm not mistaken, that is true for a certain category of FISA warrant only - which necessitates the presumption in the application that the target is actually an active foreign agent. So the coup plotters also expect us to believe that, for over a year, they knew Page was a Russian spy, allowed him to provide Russia with the benefits of his spying, and then never actually charged him. Good grief.
