Cierre Wood, who played five games with two National Football League teams, appeared in court Thursday in Las Vegas on suspicion of first-degree murder after a 5-year-old girl whom he was accused of abusing died.
Wood, who ran for almost 2,500 yards at the University of Notre Dame, appeared in three games for the Houston Texans in 2013 and two games for the Buffalo Bills in 2015. He rushed five times for 4 1/2 yards in his career before playing in the Canadian Football League. Posted by: SMOD at April 12, 2019 09:40 AM (QkjLD) 39

I had a dream once where there were zombies attacking my wife and I. There were 2 bullets left in the gun. We decided that we weren't going to make it and didn't want to be zombies, so I shot her, then myself. As I was dying, I suddenly could understand what the zombies were saying and a child was asking why we did such a thing.......then I woke up hating my brain that it would come up with such a thing.

In ancient Pergammon, the city raised a monument to their victory over the Gauls. But unlike typical Greek images of defeated enemies, the Pergammese (Pergmmonians?) depicted the Gauls is idealized, heroic warriors, honorable and worthy adversaries. One of the group is a chieftain killing his wife to save her from capture and enslavement by the Greeks. I posted the link up top, but here it is again.

Why don't kids read Greek drama anymore? I swear, reading Sophocles (on my own) opened my eyes to how we really haven't changed in 3,000 years. I'm not familiar with the artist but am impressed. He has captured the story with dark colors: the smoke, the deep reds of distant fire, the shadows cast by the burning buildings, against the white of the wife's breast. With the dark image of the dead horse, the painting could have been titled "The Last Stand" or "Failed Escape". It's a powerful depiction of desperate courage and tragedy worthy of Shakespeare or Homer.

Posted by: Kris at April 12, 2019 09:50 AM (OyyDO) The irony of it all is that man is getting worse because of the increasing belief in the perfectability of the species. Which is annoyingly happening more and more these days, especially if the company does any bidness with the feds. Anyway, I go in to the lab the company does all its screening though. They ask me to fill out this 2 page form including my SSN, DOB, all sorts of shit. I say, you don't need all this for me to take a piss test. The clerk says I need all this to fill into my computer. So I say fine I'm going to give you my name and phone number and everything else is made up. And lo and behold it did not affect the lab's ability to analyze my pee. This is the root of the problem. 90% of the data corps have on people is not needed. Also see medical providers who will never fucking get my SSN into their database no matter how many times they tell me the computer needs it. "Amazon is not too big to fail," Bezos said, in a recording of the meeting that CNBC has heard. "In fact, I predict one day Amazon will fail. Amazon will go bankrupt. If you look at large companies, their lifespans tend to be 30-plus years, not a hundred-plus years."
The key to prolonging that demise, Bezos continued, is for the company to "obsess over customers" and to avoid looking inward, worrying about itself. "If we start to focus on ourselves, instead of focusing on our customers, that will be the beginning of the end," he said. "We have to try and delay that day for as long as possible." When a scammer tried to get Sen. Cory Gardner's staffer to provide personal credit card details over the phone, they soon found they had called the wrong place.
Gardner, R-Colo., is part of a bipartisan group of senators tackling illegal robocalls. His staffer quickly recorded the call, which was spoofed to look like it was coming from an internal Senate number. Gardner, who sits on the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation and the Internet, played a snippet of the call Thursday during a hearing to discuss the havoc robocalls wreak on millions of Americans each day. "The card number you said?" the staffer asked on the recording Gardner played. "Okay, just so you know, you just called the United States Senate line and this is being recorded and we know that this is an instance of fraud." "Oh," the scammer said on the recording. "Now I stopped it there because the next words have probably never been entered into the Congressional record before," Gardner said to the committee as he was met with laughs. The painting depicts an event in Hungary from the early 1500s.
My namesake gramps graduated NYU in 1906, and having learned to speak German in school, went to Europe to soak in the culture, ending up in Hungary for two and a half years, where he became fluent in the language. Hungarian is not a germanic or romance language, is more Finnish than anything. Gramps taught English there to make a living, and subscribed his whole life to a Budapest newspaper and one from Germany. I have his Phi Beta Kappa key. He married a couple years after getting back to New Jersey, and taught high school chemistry his whole career time. A number of his students stayed in touch with him his whole life. Gramps was a classically-trained pianist, and I can still hear, in my imagination, him playing Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody. We had his piano in the summer camp for fifty years, an upright Knabe, and finally had to scrap it just a couple years ago. We kept the whole key set and the cast iron lyre. The time he spent there must have been pretty idyllic, small villages, farms, beautiful countryside, gypsy camps, all the rest. Gramps was an amateur photographer and I have a whole box of his glass negatives from the period. Posted by: Les Kinetic at April 12, 2019 10:38 AM (+fPHo) 280
I sometimes get in to conversations with phone scammers.
Things like "What happened to you in your life where this occupation even became a possibility?" I used to do the same thing with street walking hookers (who were usually undercover detectives) who would come on to me, ask me if wanted to party, and then I would attempt to convert them to Christianity. So the city of Chicago has filed a lawsuit against Jussie Smollett to collect on the $135,000 they spent investigating his hate crime hoax that their prosecutor dropped all charges.
So how do you sue a resident for investigating a crime the resident reported of whom all charges have been dismissed? If I report a crime and the police spend time and effort to investigate, and I am not charged with false reporting, why am I liable for costs? Isn't investigating possible crimes part of why the police are paid by taxpayers? yes, I know it's Chicago, but I don't see this as a slam dunk against Smollett the way a lot of sites are reporting this. In fact, because the charges were dropped, I don't believe the lawsuit has merit. Posted by: Jen the original at April 12, 2019 10:54 AM (lgxLO) 389

My lease is up on my Acura RDX and I'm starting to think about replacements. A common myth, promoted by the "trucks baaaad" crowd. Most truck sales are in a far more reasonable range. The juniorist mouse bought a 2018 F 150 last fall - 4wd STX Supercab (seriously nice truck. Posted by: musical jolly chimp at April 12, 2019 10:45 AM (Pg+x7) Well, scarcely anybody wants a "fairly recent" Bentley. They are ugly, ugly cars. And certain years of Jaguar also go for pennies at auctions. Saw one knocked down at the Silver Auction in Ft. McDowell for four hundred dollars. The auctioneer stopped his spiel, and told the buyer: "Remember, you can have it if you promise never to bring it here for sale again." Big laugh from the crowd. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at April 12, 2019 11:39 AM (uquGJ) Well, basically all you "have to" do is point and click. Point and click on the "download image" button on the website for the Linux distro of choice, and then point and click to write it to a DVD. But you need to find a computer geek to do it for you. Should not be too hard. After all, you will need a working computer with internet access in order to get the image file in the first place. If the failed computer doesn't have a DVD drive, then the distro will have to go onto a memory stick, and the laptop made to boot from that.
