The Saturday Night Joke

Shortly after a British Airlines flight had reached its cruising altitude, the captain announced:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain. Welcome to Flight 293, non-stop from London Heathrow to New York. The weather ahead is good, so we should have an uneventful flight. So, sit back, relax, and... OH...MY GOD!"

Silence followed..... complete silence...

Some moments later, the captain came back on the intercom.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm sorry if I scared you. While I was talking to you, a flight attendant accidentally spilled hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!"

From the back of the plane, an Irish passenger yelled “For the luvva Jaysus, you should see the back of mine!"

The pay is good, but not the job for me. What about you?

We all know that space travel is not only expensive, but also dangerous. If humans are to send people to Mars, scientists must know and understand the effects that living in space poses to human body. It is known that the so-called “puffy-head, bird-legs” syndrome exists, which manifests itself when, due to zero gravity conditions, blood flow is no longer pulled to the legs and as a result, the astronaut’s head is filled with fluid. Therefore, NASA and ESA teamed up to conduct a bed rest study to see how the body adapts to weightlessness. The space agencies announced that they are looking for two dozen volunteers to spend 60 days laying down to help scientists understand how space travel will affect astronauts. The participants will be paid 16,500 euros (more than $18,500) and will have to travel to Cologne, Germany.

An interesting look back into history. And not all that long ago...........Logistics, moving soap from Philadelphia to Petaluma, CA.

In 1912, Petaluma’s Carlson-Currier Silk Mill ordered three tons of soap, to wash the silk, from a Philadelphia company. How it was to be delivered is quite a story.

“Now leaving the station, the Time Travel Express, headed back 100 years. There’s plenty of room, so hop on.”

In the summer of 1912, Republican William Howard Taft was president and running for re-election against former president Theodore Roosevelt, running in his own Progressive “Bull Moose” Party, Democrat Woodrow Wilson and Socialist Eugene Debs.

Earlier in the year, New Mexico and Arizona were named the 47th and 48th states. In April, the “unsinkable” Titanic sank on its maiden voyage. In Washington D.C., the first cherry trees were planted. The Boston Red Sox opened a new stadium, Fenway Park, where if you bought Cracker Jack, you got a prize in the box. Fifteen young women were fired for dancing the Turkey Trot on their lunch break. The summer Olympics were held in Stockholm, with Jim Thorpe winning gold medals in two new events, the decathlon and pentathlon, and Sweden taking the gold in tug of war.

And, on June 20, 1912, the Philadelphia Inquirer announced that teamsters from the Chas. W. Young Company would make the first transcontinental shipment of goods in the United States. A crew left Philadelphia in an Alco truck, loaded with three tons of Parrot Brand Olive Oil Soap, heading for Petaluma and the Carlson-Currier Silk Mills.

Alcohol & shopping. Guess how much Americans spend online while drunk. H/T redc1c4

A new survey reveals that nearly 80% of people who drink alcohol have shopped on the web while intoxicated.

And while the results can be hilarious, drunk shopping is a multi-billion dollar national habit.

According to a survey by tech and business newsletter The Hustle, drunk Americans spend approximately $45 billion per year, with an average annual spend of $444 per drunk shopper.

Most common? Clothing and shoes, while Amazon remains the shopping platform of choice.

3" vinyl records. The come back kid.

History is littered with dead audio formats, from Elcaset to 8-track tapes, wire recording to "talking rubber." Yet so far, vinyl has consistently resisted going quietly into that good night. Today, unit sales are up 800 percent from ten years ago, and companies continue to produce turntables of all shapes and sizes (they even steal CES headlines from the latest Internet-of-whatever device).

So while we may no longer want them in our automobiles, in home record players appear to be thriving whether due to an appreciation of physical media, tactile rituals, or multi sensory experiences. And on this wave of modern record appreciation, one of the most obscure vinyl formats is getting a second lease on life thanks to Record Store Day.

John Wayne: The Duke or Draft Dodger?

It seems the Duke chose to be a megastar millionaire instead of an over-worked, underpaid draftee doing lowly jobs overseas.

John Wayne is undisputedly one of the most popular stars in American history. His vast legacy of films, which set the cinematic standards for the decades to come, granted him immortality and rightly made him an icon.

Though he died in June 1979, he’s still idolized by innumerable people as the face of American ideals and values. Even today, there’s hardly any “favorite film star” list in which the Duke – as the actor is nicknamed – isn’t seen among the top spots

Honesty helps. But he is still a Genius Award Winner.

What millions have seen around the world is all just a blur of patchy memories to Daniel Taylor.

Taylor was charged after fighting with McDonald's worker
He admits he had been drinking before incident
He served 56 days in jail after charges

He is the man in a viral video from January, when he got into a physical confrontation with a McDonald's employee over a straw.

Asked Wednesday his takeaway when looking back at the incident, he laughed and said "I was a drunken idiot."

47 The Philly-Petaluma logistics story sort of relates to the interesting visit I just had to Virginia City, NV. Was the "day off" from x-c skiing in the Sierras (could never do that s**t 3 days in a row, even when actually 29). Had no idea about the financial aspect of the silver rush, importance of the money to the Union during the war, NV's entry during the war or its "battle-born" slogan.

Last thing one thinks about when looking out on the beautiful desert with snow-topped mountains is guys in gray and blue slugging it out in malarial wetlands back east.

Also never knew how industrialization/innovation sort of hit mining in a big way with the Virginia City boom. All sorts of inventions/first uses for tools and techniques that soon became standard world-wide.

64 So I was with a friend today who is a good guy, but a leftie.

He gave me a lot of crap in 2008 after Obama's reign of destruction began.

We've kinda agreed to disagree about Trump, because a friendship since the '70's is more important.

Anyway today we were sipping on a beer and he just changed the subject and said, "There wasn't much to that Mueller investigation. It was a waste of time. The press really blew it, after 2 years I thought they would have had something. It's really confusing."

I nearly fell out of my chair. He said he knew that I knew the details, and where to start. He was all confused.

I told him to watch for the uncovering of the FISA Court warrants that were fraudulent. All 4 of them.

I didn't want to overload him too soon.

Until last week, he still thought that CNN was a news network.

It's quite common for LDS missionaries to have significant others left behind at home while the missionary is in the field. One missionary in my mission, who had a girlfriend waiting for him back home, got some rather surprising news. While he was away for his two year stint, his father married the mother of the missionary's girlfriend.

I don't know whether anything happened between the missionary and the girlfriend once he completed his mission and returned home (unsurprisingly, most of the time the relationship doesn't survive the two year absence). But it had the potential to make for an interesting family tree.

98 MarkY, oh yes, war is the engine of innovation in modern times especially (including the Civil War - sized clothing being my favorite, the income tax being my least favorite). Most people are familiar with at least some of the highlights of how WWII drove innovation beyond all norms, but the Civil War had its fair share of revolutionary developments.

But in Virginia City the circumstances happened to coincide with a time in history when science, engineering, and industry had so many more answers than just a few years before. Not that they solved all the problems.

Funniest, most instructive part was that for years, mining for the gold that had been found and started the whole rush, they had discarded (even used for road beds) the ore that contained all the silver. Had never seen silver in such a formation, didn't recognize it. Only when testing to see what other auxiliary use they might make of the stuff did they discover ..... oh s**t, this stuff is silver!

Speaking of WWII, and SoCal, while looking around for ramen places to try after picking up a skeery skeery gun tomorrow up in lower SmellA, I saw on the computer map that the Torrance airport has been named Louis Zamperini Field. Which I find amusing, given that Torrance was once the center of Japanese-American post-war suburban living, and the first Japanese corporate center in the US (Toyota moved to TX 2 years ago, but I think there are still many Japanese corps with their US HQs there).

186 @107 John Ford didn't seem to have a problem with John Wayne.
-------------------------

Wayne and Ford were friends for pretty much the entirety of both of their lives. I don't know what Ford thought about Wayne's actions during the war. But I know he remained good friends with the actor. As an example, when Wayne was directing 'The Alamo', Ford turned up on set and hung around. Wayne initially didn't know what to do with him. It was Wayne's directorial debut, and the last thing he needed was a talented idle director just hanging around. But telling Ford to just leave would have been rude. After a bit it was suggested that he have Ford direct some secondary shooting. That got him off the set without risking the friendship.

I went to Ralphs today, and there was a beggar in front, again. Second time I've seen him.

BUT... this guy wasn't your ordinary beggar. Just like the last time I saw him, he was singing and busking his heart out on his guitar. He had a pail in front of him.

I admit this charmed me. I actually gave the guy a buck.

I just feel far more good about giving it to a guy who's working (as in, doing SOMETHING) for it, like sharing music, rather than just somebody who's doing nothing but sitting, trying to look pathetic, and debasing himself for pennies and nickels.

My question for the Horde: Am I crazy for feeling this way?

*And no MisHum, I do NOT want to go to Quora and ask about this. I respect the Horde's opinions, not strangers at other sites.

"Oh yeah?" Frawley demanded of the beggar's request. "Why the #*%& should I give you any money?!"

The beggar admitted, "sir, I admit I'm no good and I can't work. I just wanna get over to the bar as soon as I can and get loaded."

According to legend, Frawley was so impressed, he laughed out loud, took the beggar with him to the high-end Hollywood bar he was headed for, and bought him all the booze he could drink.

It's a band brake. Seems plausible. Maybe one of the nautical morons can speculate.

409 dartist #336:
I worked in downtown Chicago for 10 years or so and saw every kind of beggar around then. You can tell who really needs it and who is full of shit....

Lived there fourteen winters. Year-end holiday time, I would buy a bunch of gift coupons for McDonald's, and hand them out to the bums. Talk about being able to tell who was hungry and who wasn't!

Most memorable was Milady and me walking down near Division, blazing hot summer afternoon. Bum passed out on the sidewalk, in the blazing sun, people stepping around him and over him, as oblivious as New Yawkers.

Best Milady and I could do was get him shaken awake enough to stand up and we helped him stagger over to some shade, out of the way. Y'do whatcha can.

Now that we've got experts on nautical history here, got a question I've never been able to pin down. How much rum is a "tot?" I think I saw one source that said 8 oz, which would mean that, in the novel I'm re-reading, Noble House, Struan's "a double tot of rum to all hands" meant "you can get seriously drunk tonight." But is that right, or was it just a shot or something?

456 Minesweeper sounds right. Actually do remember seeing it docked (end of dock, of course, not in a slip) at the marina as we sailed by. There were a zillion types and sizes of auxiliaries and things like minesweepers in WWII.

Speaking of mines, I've always wondered how the hell the various players managed to track/avoid/keep updated on minefields in the Med, where the Italians and the British would lay fields ("barrages") all the time. Wasn't like the fields off the UK, or in the various straits around Japan. Constant changes. But lots of ships were lost to mines, which I guess might be my answer: they didn't keep up to date that well, and did it the hard way.

Well now, let's not jump to conclusions. I actually haven't read the book, and Faulkner just MAY have INTENDED the expression to be in the present tense. As in "As I Lie Dying Here Writing this Book." Except that these being southern yahoos he was writing about, they'd say "As I LAY Raht Here In This Here Spot Dyin' Away."

Now that might be good for a Ph.D. thesis raht there.

Few flags to be seen right around here. Canadians, as a rule, don't fly flags as much as do Americans, and home flagpoles are rarely seen.

I should order a nice Red Ensign, and fly it when Turdeau snuffs it. I don't like our current flag one little bit.

And I expect that Western resentment of the Maple Leaf rag is one reason why relatively few of us fly the damned thing. It does not represent me, or my history.
