The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I really can’t see a reason why we can’t pursue this at the federal level, to incentivize states.” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

Quote II

“In much the same way that the Confederate flag became a white supremacist signaling device, wearing the MAGA hat and self-identifying as a ‘Trump supporter’ now serves the same purpose.” Charles Blow

Quote III

You know, instead of training children, teachers, houses of faith, & concertgoers to prep for being shot, we could just:

-Pass Universal Background checks (#HR8!)
-Disarm domestic abusers
-Mandate safe storage
-Ban bump stocks, semiautos, & high cap mags designed to kill people
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY)

Quote IV

“These people who are already insecure about losing their job switch on the TV, look at the newspaper and hear that they are being described as bigots, racists. And they resent it, and the one thing I would urge you people who do this type of content is try and complete the idea of ‘the other’ being in the room because they can hear what you are saying.” Andrew Sullivan

My disdain for the Bush family grows by the day. Barbara Bush blames PDT for her heart attack. Good grief!!

It’s no secret that the Bush family has little affinity for President Donald Trump, but former first lady Barbara Bush disliked him so much, she blamed him for her heart attack.

That’s according to a new book, titled “The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty,” written by USA Today’s Susan Page.

Not only did the late Barbara Bush apparently attribute her health woes to Trump, she even left the Republican Party, according to an excerpt on the book from USA Today.

It's not hard to leave the Republican Party when you aren't a Republican.

Each and every member of European Parliament must dream every day how to screw over EU citizens. The Meme Ban is coming, like it or not.

It’s official: the European Parliament has finally approved the controversial Copyright Directive, which is designed to overhaul online copyright law in the EU.

The law is divisive. Especially Article 13: opponents call it a “meme ban,” and say it’ll limit freedom of speech by forcing “upload filters” on any user-uploaded content and give big tech an even stronger grip online. Advocates, on the other hand, say that it will force big tech to pay their fair share. What’s certain: the internet in Europe will never be the same.

If you're a Democrat who believes in the Green New Deal why didn't you vote for it when given the chance?

Ocasio-Cortez slams Republicans as ‘climate delayers’ after Green New Deal defeat
The Green New Deal failed to pass a procedural vote in the Senate Tuesday, with Democrats slamming the GOP motion as a “sham” and with two exceptions voting “present” in protest.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell put the ambitious plan to create jobs and improve the environment to a vote to force Democrats to take a public stand on the measure and try to divide the party’s moderates and progressives.

The final vote was 57 against and no one for the plan, with 43 Democrats voting present.

Red State Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona voted no.

Purdue Pharma, maker of OxyContin makes its first settlement.

Purdue Pharma, the company that makes OxyContin, has settled a lawsuit with the state of Oklahoma and will pay roughly $270 million over claims that the company helped fuel the opioid epidemic. Major media outlets all cite “people familiar with the matter,” but neither Purdue nor Oklahoma’s Attorney General have issued a public statement yet.

Make up your mind or else!

The European Parliament has voted to end daylight saving time in EU member states, a practice that became law back in 1996. Bloomberg notes that the biannual clock changes will come to an end in 2021 when individual member states will be able to decide whether they will remain on winter time or summer time permanently.

The EU first started investigating ending the practice of daylight saving time last year when it announced a Europe-wide poll to understand what the public thought about the rules. Out of the people who responded, 84 percent were in favor of clocks staying the same throughout the year. The main reason for doing so is that changing the clocks disrupts the human biorhythm, which can have severe implications for our health. The EU Commission formerly proposed ending the practice last August.

Synthetic marijuana gets the green light.

The DEA has just announced in the Federal Register that the same manufacturer of the notorious fentanyl has produced a synthetic marijuana product which they believe is more medically valuable and safer than real cannabis.

Namely, the drug Syndros, a liquid form of synthetic THC, will be now classified as a schedule 2 controlled substance, so doctors can legally prescribe it.

We are happy that your move worked out so well for you. But did you leave your Seattle political beliefs behind?

The best $5,929.10 I ever spent: moving back to the Midwest
Moving from Seattle to Cedar Rapids cost nearly $6,000, and I’m so glad I did it.

Maybe Sharia Law has it right? What's the perfect punishment for this thief?

Broadband and cable providers already have a pretty scummy reputation for hidden fees and inconvenient setup times, but I’m not sure they’ve ever committed a cardinal sin — until now. Yesterday afternoon, a Spectrum employee in the Los Angeles area apparently stole a young woman’s dog and drove off with him. Fortunately for the dog, the entire incident was caught on the family’s security camera.

Monday evening, Melissa Cortez posted the video on Twitter, tagging both Spectrum and local news outlets and hoping her 10-month-old pug puppy, Andrew, would be returned home safely. The video circulated across social media and in a matter of hours local news outlets were responding.

His concern about aerodynamics, noted. Genius Award Winner.

A naked man attempted to board a plane at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport while shouting that clothes make him less aerodynamic, the REN TV television channel reported Saturday.

The man passed through the Ural Airlines flight’s registration before suddenly stripping off his clothes and running stark naked onto the jet bridge, eyewitnesses said.

“He shouted that he was naked because clothing impairs the aerodynamics of the body. He flies with more agility when undressed,” REN TV quoted a fellow passenger as saying.

Dog owners are special people. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

A little girl who asked for dog photos has received more than 200,000 photos and letters – and so much more!

Emma Mertens of Hartland, Wisconsin, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in January.

She asked for nothing more than adorable dog photos since she could never have her own pup. Unfortunately, her family is very allergic to canines.

That motorised horse reminds me of the time a very green lefty and very
liberals arts guy asked me how many horsepower a human being could
produce and then was mystified when I told him far less than 1.

Phfysickz: how does it fucking work?

***
He's got something of a point. The Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia used to be a symbol of southern pride in the same sense that say the flag of Saint George is an English symbol.

We allowed the left and the FNM to turn it into a symbol of "white supremacy" and they want to do the same thing with MAGA hats.

And here again, it is because the symbol of pride in America as it once was is a danger to the left.

Of course the great irony of the MAGA hats is that they call back to the America that existed before the modern left - long after the confederacy was defeated and the Union restored. Calling it a symbol of "white supremacy" is NO different then calling the Constitution or the army that liberated Western Europe a symbol of "white supremacy"

That just aint right. Even *I* know it aint right. We have got to get this on the build machine, with spec files and any sources as tarballs so these nifty tools can be installed on the many "production processing machines" via the rpm process that we say we follow.

219 I'm a day late, but I would like to do an odd, unique thing - praise Jimmy Carter.

Forty years ago yesterday, Jimmy presided over the signing of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty, which transformed the Middle East, in a good way.

It is a cold peace - there aren't busloads of Israeli tourists touring the Pyramids, and there aren't busloads of Egyptian tourists touring Jerusalem, and Anwar Sadat was assassinated two years later (largely for signing the agreement) but the peace has held.

This has transformed the strategic situation for Israel, by removing the threat that thousands of Egyptian tanks could roll towards Tel Aviv, but it also transformed Egyptian policy as well, by removing Israel as the all-purpose enemy of Egypt.

It has lead Israel and Egypt to closely cooperate on security matters, to the point where Israel has allowed Egypt to station more troops close to Israel than allowed by the treaty, so that Egypt can more effectively fight the jihadists.

Jimmy didn't have a lot of successes, but this has been the most lasting one.

Lotsa photos of all your sparklies, too, of course.

Spend no more on "advertising". Rather, provide content for the trade journos that are desperate for column-inches to publish.

They'll print your articles, and you'll get far more coverage and eyeballs that FB could ever provide, given their "advertising" models.

A. These assholes give two shits about precedent

B. Does precedent mean we get to just make a whole bunch of shit up, cry, investigate and stonewall the next (D) from Day 1, and it's fine...?

Because I remember libs crying a LOT when McConnell said he wanted to make Obama a one term president. Remember when liberals were just SOOOOOO shocked and oh-my-stars-and-garters that an elected official would say something like that against..... dun, dunnnn, dunnnnnn... THE PRESIDENT????

270 The Israeli and Egyptian sides had already agreed the deal, they just asked Jimmah to provide a venue and US political cover.

Of course there would not have been agreement if Israel and Egypt had not thought that it was in their best interests, but the involvement of the United States was important in legitimizing the deal.

And to this day, the US Army enforces the restrictions on Egyptian troop and tank numbers in Sinai - I was touring Sinai a decade or so ago, and had gotten used to the the Egyptian military and police checkpoints, and then my tour bus went through a US Army checkpoint (101st Airborne, as I recall). I went "what the?" and then remembered - "oh yeah, the peace treaty").

The Israelis understandably thought that UN peacekeepers were useless, and thought that the Egyptians would think twice before booting the US Army out of the checkpoints.

I spent most of 1990 with the MFO in Sinai. And yeah, the armor limits in various zones in the Sinai are strictly enforced. Until they aren't.

At one point, the Egyptians had engineers out clearing one of the old mine fields near one of our posts (basically they jabbed the ground with long poles). It was pre-cleared to bring the military engineers into the zone, so there was no diplomatic problems. Until two of them detonated an anti-tank mine and got turned into pink mist. Saw that one myself while doing an inspection at the post, which sucked.

Anyway, about 2 weeks later the Egyptians showed up at one of our checkpoints in a tank transporter hauling a T-55 with a flail drum on the front. They didn't bother to tell anyone about it first. Yeah, it caused something of a kerfuffle. Took about 24 hours of coordinating (officers screaming at each other) with the MFO command, the Egyptians and Israelis to get permission to bring a single tank in to clear a mine field.

They spent the next month running that old rustbucket back and forth popping off mines about 200 meters away from our observation post.

314 *sigh*, I doubt I will ever learn to make a decent pie crust.
Posted by: Kindltot at March 27, 2019 10:53 PM (mUa7G)

If you're still here, I'm going to help you make a much better than decent pie crust, Kindltot. Long post ahead but if you want to make the best pie crust you've ever made, read on. This is my own method and I developed it by trying out a lot of different things. Nothing wrong with store bought crust, but making a good homemade crust is incredibly satisfying, not to mention tasty. People go crazy for it plus it's really delectable.

First, use the tried and true 3-2-1 recipe - 3 parts flour, 2 parts butter, 1 part liquid (I use full fat cream) plus or minus. This is just a working ratio. You can skimp a little on the butter. And a pinch of salt. Optional: A tablespoon of sugar for a dessert crust.

I personally use 10 oz flour, 6.6 oz cold UNSALTED butter and about 3.8 oz of cold cream.

Cut the butter into roughly half inch cubes (you don't have to make them too small or worry too much at this point) and add to the flour and salt mixture. Set the liquid *aside* and dump the flour/butter/salt and optional sugar into your food processor. Run it for 15 to 20 seconds. Then STOP. Your crust is not ready at this point. This is just to get it started and it makes the next part much, much easier.

Scrape the mixture out into a nice sized bowl. It will still be like flour with large chunks of softened butter. Rub the mixture with some pressure and let it all fall through your fingers in little handfuls until it resembles breadcrumbs or a sandy beach. The butter should not dissolve all the way, you will still be left with some nice sized little marbles of butter. Dig into the bowl as you go. The idea is to moisten *all* the flour with *all* the butter. It takes maybe 2 or 3 minutes. Test its readiness by picking up a fistful and squeezing it with your hand. If it clumps nicely in your palm and doesn't fall apart, you are DONE.

Get a wooden spoon or silicone spatula and add your liquid slowly to the bowl. Mix it up but be patient and give it all some time to absorb into the flour. My ratio is pretty much perfect so after 3.8 oz of cold full fat cream and a little elbow grease the mixture will be very nicely moistened. It may seem a bit dry but mix well and then finish up by using your hands to gently bring it all together into a ball. If it seems VERY dry and won't ball up, you can always add a bit more liquid, mix a little and try to bring it together again. Slightly wetter crust is probably better over all but you don't want to drench it. You will be adding a little more flour during rolling anyway.

Wrap it up in some cling film and put it in the fridge for at least a half hour.

When you are ready to use it, divide it in two halves (top and bottom, or two bottoms). It will be hard when it comes out of the fridge so rest it on your counter for 15 minutes or so before using, or just pound away with your rolling pin until it's a nice disc.

For rolling, dust your counter with flour, dust the top of the disc with flour. Roll and rotate a couple times. Flip it over, use a bit more flour. Keep rolling, keep flipping, roll from the center out, don't be afraid to use more flour.

If you've read this far, congratulations. I am routinely told that my pie crust is the best folks have ever had, and hence they say my pie is the best they've ever had. They're not just being polite. They go crazy for it and with a little practice, it's worth it.

We moved from the south side of town up to Government Hill last month, half a block from JBER. So, every time the F-22s go flying, so do we, in spirit at least, and every time the Globemaster lands, we get to watch it, and every week day at 17:00 sharp, they play the National Anthem so we stop and put our hands over our hearts.

We sort of love it here.

Oh for Pete's sake.

Don't make it so difficult.

Put a cup of flour in a bowl. Put in some salt, maybe 1/2 tsp. Then cut in the shortening, unsalted butter or lard, doesn't matter too much which, but use 1/3 cup. Use a pastry blender, those rounded bottom wire thingies. Smash it up until it looks like a bunch of split peas. Not in color, just in shape.

Then dump in 5-1/2 T of cold water. Quickly mix with a fork, and then form into a ball with your hands. Roll it out and put it in your pan.

I have seen lots of fancy recipes for pie crust, but this is the tried and true. Grandma taught it to me, and guess where she got it.

Helen Shapiro was a star in early-60s UK. Her first #1 was in 1961, when she was 14. In the winter / spring of 1963, she toured Britain, with the Beatles as an opening act (it was at this time they wrote the song "Misery" for her, but she never recorded it).

Her 1963 song "Look Who It Is" never charted in the US and only reached 47 on the UK charts, but I came across her lip-syncing it on the show Ready, Steady, Go! with three close friends. Grab a cup of something and enjoy 2 minutes of happiness:

We lost the accountant and (as professional courtesy) wealth manager tax deduction. It's also difficult to judge, as we did rather well in the stock market last year. Overall, I'll take a little hit, for lower unemployment and a good economy. The wife voted libertarian last time, she's leaning towards Trump in 2020.

As I mentioned earlier, the number of Reps per state is adjusted every 10 years, to reflect changes in population per State. This is why the Founders included a Census. This was foreseen by some pretty wise men. So, why is this an issue again?

Posted by: Calm Mentor at March 28, 2019 12:02 AM (ffYR/)

431
The argument for increasing the number of reps is interesting and makes valid points. A little history: In the Federalist Papers you can read reasoning about the ratio of representatives to population.

Too many, and you get "direct faction", faction being what we'd call special interests to day. They wanted every rep to have to deal with these factions himself, and never get the directly in Congress.

Too small, and you have the problem they dubbed the "cabals of the few".

In the end they ended up setting a upper limit on the ratio of reps to population, but not a lower limit. Or reciprocally, they put a lower limit on the population to rep ratio, but no upper limit.

And that was about 1:32000. Now, right now, it's over 1:500,000.

We could increase the number 10 fold and still not hit the limit.

When you increase the number, you decrease the value of each congressman. If you had say, 2000 of them, no one would be any big deal. You'd have to bride a lot more than few.

There are drawbacks, of course, but the above is one good effect of it.

I pay taxes, it's not insignificant too me. And no, they get lifetime retirement benefits and health care for them and their family. For only one term. I want less government not more. Now, if he made it so big, it could do nothing, then you're talking. But, they get SS and Medicaid for all.

Current law fixes the number of representatives to 435. So as the population increases, the ratio of reps to population decreases.

464

The big drawback to increasing the number of reps is the effect on the Electoral College, and that is why I would be against it without some other changes in the selection of electors.

The more reps you have, the more it weighs the vote in favor of the popular vote.

Each state gets two votes per senator plus the number of reps. This gives a "equal states" weighting component vs a population weighting component.

Increasing the number of reps shifts that more to the population side.

And I'm agin that, so while I agree 1:500K is too little, it is outweighed by the electoral college effect.

They list some ammo. In store only. No on line orders. At least on the regular walmart.com

They used to have a book available where you could order firearms. It was on line too. Don't know about ammo though.

471 It's not the cost of the Salary per Congresscritter.

It's the *entire* budget per Congresscockroach.

Multiple offices, redundant staffs in each, air travel, franking privileges, junkets, and so much more.

Adds up to many tens of millions, per.

Still, statistical noise on the budget. I get that.

But we don't need more Fed.Gov. We've got more than enough, already.

Because the proposed solution is idiotic, and makes Congress even more of a pointless circus than it is today. If there are 3,000 members, how does any one member stand out? By working as hard as he can to be the biggest clown for the cameras, that's how.

When your "representative" has only 1 vote out of 3000, then you don't actually have any representation at all.

Glad you liked it! I'm a Beatle fan from way back, myself.

Shapiro was always more popular in the UK than anywhere else. Her career ran out in the mid 60s, but revived for a bit when she did "cabaret" acts in the style of Shirley Bassey and Dusty Springfield. She converted to Christianity and no longer performs any of her pop hits, or so I believe.

Another Beatle connection of hers was her appearance in a lovely music exploitation movie from 1962, It's Trad, Dad!, directed by future Hard Day's Night helmer Richard Lester:

Trump is hilarious in this interview. Disappointed he won't be able to run against Elizabeth Warren. "I hit her too hard, too early, and now it looks like she's finished. I wish she would have been in the race. I would have loved to run against her."

Says he won't trash the Green New Deal because he wants the Dems to run on it.

568 Each US rep gets a budget for personnel, travel, office space and franking that costs us about $1.4 million per member, plus their $174k salary. Oh, and don't forget the gold plated medical plans for them and their staffers, and that sweet pension money that they contribute bupkis to.

Overall, they cost somewhere north of $2 million per head per year. Doubling the # of them would run us an extra billion per year. Plus throw another 10,000 staffers into the legislative bill writing process; I'm sure those extra 10K hands won't be adding to the length of the 2,500 page crapfests they already turn out. That no one reads now.

And then mostly go to die in the Senate. Which happens to about 90-95% of the bills they pass.

Thinks it's very important to fret about sh!t you can't change. And give indulgences to every climate pied-piper who shows up. Because costs don't matter when we Have To Do Something!

I wish I could argue face to face with AOC about climate change. I keep going off on the -- pardon the four-letter word -- math.

We have 12 years to save the planet. Well, except we don't, honey; we have 10, because nothing you want done will happen in the next 2 years for sure. So that's 10 years to save the planet and it'll be 2 years more damaged. Except Trump is going to win in 2020, so your best-case scenario is 6 years to save the planet, at which time it will have accumulated 6 more years of damage. Half the time to do twice the work. Six years to transform the country's economy, transportation, agriculture, industry, everything, and we'll be fighting forest fires, plagues, and floods the whole time.

In other words, just sell your shit, grab your savings, and go on a permanent vacation. YOLO, and your life will soon come to an end.

601 Last Friday I bought on of those 'corned beef in a bag' for $1.99 lb on sale, three pounds worth. Just got that sucker started in the slow cooker with a little beef stock and the seasoning packet. So some corned beef and roasted red potatoes for dinner. But the real treat is for over the weekend. Tomorrow morning I'm buying a loaf of pumpernickel/rye swirl, some Gruyere and kraut to make reubens. I also plan on some corned beef hash w/ sunny-side up eggs either Saturday or Sunday, maybe both mornings depending on what the final cooked amount of the corned beef turns out to be -- and how much I devour in sammiches before then.

This is not about the election. But quite frankly you would not notice much of difference if any of the middle of the road other parties won ( Which at this point looks doubtful since the coalition on the Right appears to opening a sizeable lead ). But what I am talking about is this:

Again Hamas intiates a conflict firing a missile into central Israel and almost killing innocents. Israel Netanyahu responds by hitting ONLY empty buildings. THEN he negotiates to give Hama concessoins? You tell me how is this sain or rational. And he has now done this over and over and over and ovedr again. Might as well fluch that deterrence down the toilet

Is Hezbollah decoupled from Hamas?

Can you prevent a two front war by sapping Hamas a bit at a time? These actions add to the futility of Hamas power. Without backing them into a corner so worse groups take over.

It is satisfying to think of Gaza without any males left to wage war, but perhaps that is best left to subtle actions like setting up a US university there, giving them US TV, and making man buns the new fashion.

Well Hezb and Hamas are seperate groupd.Hamas is Sunni, Hezbella is Shia, so by definition they hate each other almost as much as they hate Jews and Christians. And Thank G-D for that. Do they cooporate against Israel sometimes? Sure probably but such is life. Israel has to prepared to fight a 2 front war or at least fight n one front and have a holding action on the other. But to talk directly about Hamas. Me? I'd assasinate all their top leaders. And I would turn out the lights in Gaza. Mazke them pay for thier actions

You have to be depraved for him to be elevated.

Not agreeing with him can't mean a difference of opinion (or that he's wrong, heaven forbid), it has to mean that you're fundamentally evil because he MUST be pure and good.
