Two people in my life are on our prayer list.
Jean has mantle cell lymphoma. She has declined chemotherapy and the infusions she's received are working really well. Her numbers are great right now.
Allison is the young mother who had a massive stroke two weeks after her baby was born. She's now home with her baby and is working to regain function on the right side of her body.

How about this - I'm familiar with a case where a MD had a kid with a crack ho. He acknowledges his paternity and offers to pay his child support in one lump sum. The Judge says okay (and the State of Ohio takes it's 2% poundage - yes, that is what it is called) so he writes a big check.
Fast forward a few years - crack ho mom sniffs/shoots up all the dough. She goes back to the well heeled MD for more $$. Dr says No. She hauls him back into family court and the judge decides "for the good of the child" he needs to pay AGAIN.
And that my friends, is the state of child support in my lovely state.
Oh yeah, he tried to have her declared an unfit mother and take custody of the innocent child. No dice.

I've always wondered that since the sole criterion in family court is the "good of the child", why judges don't simply order random males to pay child support in cases where the father can't be identified or is otherwise unavailable. After all, that would benefit the child.
We've already established that demonstrating that the child is not yours makes no difference in your obligation to pay child support in a divorce.

In Oregon, we pay $14,000 per year per student to go to public school. Private school is considered to be better in every way but only costs about $4,500 - $6,500 per year per student.
My son goes to a high school with about 1400 students and about 75 teachers and staff. So.....$14,000x1,400=$19,600,000....$19,600,000/75=$261,333 spent/staff member. Since these staff members are all poor and they send the kids out on countless fundraisers whenever they need something, where the fuck did the rest of the money go???

I leave my thermostat set at 60 in the fall, winter, spring. I used to set it at 60 at night then turn it up in the morning. At some point after I retired, I'd wander around in the morning with my robe on, so I stopped turning it back up. Now I'm so used to it being cool, summer is a problem. I try to live with 68 in the summer.

¼ cup low carb sweetener eg xylitol, Swerve, or similar
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350F.
Grind the pecans as finely as possible using a food processor.
Break the egg into a bowl and whisk until lightly beaten. Add the pecans and sweetener, then mix well.
Divide the mixture into 12, then place each portion onto a baking tray lined with a silicone mat.
Bake for 8-10 minutes until firm. Leave to cool slightly then transfer to a cooling rack.

That was one of the things that bothered me the most about Obama. I grew up a traditional Catholic in the fifties and sixties. Getting preggers outside marriage was considered very naughty. I've gone through the "lying to non-federal cops or officers of the Court" thing before.
It's not pleasant... the prosecutor will inform you that perjury is a felony crime. That if you provably lie on the stand, you will go to jail. and, that if you unprovably lie on the stand, but contradict prior statements to law enforcement, you will become their enemy, they will hound you forever, and your word will be worthless in any future proceeding you may have for the rest of your life.
But they never pretended that lying to cops was an actual crime, and I never pretended to tell them the truth.
If I say something to a policeman that they believe will help a case they're working, then they're damned fools if they believe me, and even dumber damned fools if they think think they can can count on it, come time for sworn testimony.
Making lying to the cops a crime is unfair, and takes all the fun out of the game.

Here's an accent map of the US. Now, note how the Upstate, to the west including Greenville, is in a different sliver than the rest of SC and most of Georgia.

There's the problem. Teachers pay is entirely based on the number of years they've worked and the degrees they have. So the laziest teacher in the building gets the same pay as the teacher who is in the building working until 6 PM, or the teacher who sits up until midnight working.

No. Teachers' pay should be - but isn't - based on what one has to pay for people of suitable competence. Period.
Teachers are grossly overpaid. Why do I say that? Do school districts have trouble filling teaching positions? At least here in Cali, quite the contrary. People fight to gain teaching positions.
Conclusion: teachers are overpaid. At the clearing price, the number of qualified applicants would roughly match the number of positions.
An addendum: in my dotage I considered teaching at a local community college just for shits and grins. It paid more for people with bachelor's degrees than I made back in the day - in the biggest of bigs - with a Ph.D. from the biggest of bigs.

I recall it was a rather lengthy survey and I am pretty sure which couple of questions narrowed my window to a very small geographical area.

The funny thing was some of the English/Drama types tried to fool him by attempting to put on an accent.
The guy heard right through it, saying, "Well, you're making a crude attempt at blah-blah, but you're from X".

But, for instance, I had a new boss come to my shop after a nationwide buyout. Never knew the dude from Adam.
I impressed him by guessing his hometown in minutes (I've never been there).
But I need more than just an accent/dialect, though that's a huge part. Another part was his complexion, age, and physical mannerisms. I also needed some feedback from him, by asking him when he came to the States, and where he lived here.
Once I had all that, I guessed right on the first try: Sarajevo.

On the bright side, the hard working teachers grading long essays are more likely to have the honors students who generally behave themselves and are often interested in the lessons.
The teachers just there to babysit may have less work, but have to suffer maladjusted, defiant brats day after day after day. And thanks to Obama's DoE spreading their disparate impact bs, teachers get pushback from their administration for writing up the worst kids. Because as we all know the only rational explanation for why certain kids get suspended more often is because the generally left-wing teachers are all racists, and not that the bad kids frequently lack a father at home.

A commenter said earlier that this is no longer about child support; it is just revenge. She could have pursued the guy for child support when he fled to Canada. The border is no barrier to enforcing a child support judgement.
One of three situations will be in play:
1. He is very well off, and will simply cut her a check for the whole sum, discounted for cash, and a quit claim.
2. He has practically nothing. No income but Social Security and/or food stamps, and no savings, and no assets to attach. She gets nothing, because there is nothing to get.
3. He has a bit of money, but could not pay 170 G's to save his life. And at his age, he is unlikely to be able to readily get a good-paying job to make installments, either. I would not blame him for cashing in all his assets, and fucking off to places untraceable.

Had a friend whose Dad was BIG into Estes Rockets, had a 10 platform launch system.

We're getting all the planes ready for fire season and sure can see all the AZ weeds and grass turning color now this past week. Gonna be a crazy-ass desert fire season it looks like.

I have been out 4-wheeling in the desert numerous times this winter, and going for one last trip tomorrow to Queen Valley. The desert has been very green so far. Lots of wildflowers. There has been a lot of moisture this Winter. Anyone who thinks the Sonora desert is some sort of dead, drab wasteland has never been out in it; it is really very beautiful.

In high school, me and a buddy made a little rocket from the shell of a an old Bakelite felt-tip marker. Put a nose cone on it, and little paper fins, too. It looked like a tiny Jupiter C missile. We lit the fuse, and it rose up slowly off the ground, straight up, just like a Canaveral launch. And when it got a foot up, it toppled over, flew into the ground and exploded. Just like the real thing.

Okay, that question was in relation to a 140 lb. kid, with a bike set up at minimum weight, such as it was in 1975.
Now, let's take the same bike, add a sturdy rack behind the seat-post and above the rear wheel.
Propulsion mounted to said rack, will be an RPG accelerator motor.
That'll push a 6 lb. payload up to about 600 mph.
Assuming a 25 lb. bike and 200 lb. Olde Farte in command, what does that accelerator motor do in it's scant few seconds of burn?

That's actually, a manageable speed.
First speeding ticket I ever got, was on a Styer 10 speed bike, 1974.
San Diego, CA. Westbound on Balboa Ave, heading towards the beach.
45 mph posted speed.
Rode past the H-D riding San Diego Motor Officer, who clocked me at 53 mph, and had NO sense of humor.
Even though I was riding downhill in one of the two steep canyons that defined the route down from Kearny Mesa to the beach.
Why the speed, you ask?
Every MPH of downhill momentum, was that much less pain, in pedaling up the other side of the canyon road.
Starting from 0 mph at the bottom, after being handed a pricey ticket at age 15?
Pushing that bike up the hill was an exercise in misery, and an insult in the bargain.
