Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Kristin Gillbrand Refused to "Believe All Women" When a Staffer Complained of Being Harassed by One of Her Top Aides, But Finally Parted With Him When Media Pressure Got Too Problematic
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), one of the most outspoken advocates of the #MeToo movement who has made fighting sexual misconduct a centerpiece of her presidential campaign, spent last summer pressing legislators to update Congress' "broken" system of handling sexual harassment. At the same time, a mid-20s female aide to Gillibrand resigned in protest over the handling of her sexual harassment complaint by Gillibrand's office, and criticized the senator for failing to abide by her own public standards. In July, the female staffer alleged one of Gillibrand's closest aides -- who was a decade her senior and married -- repeatedly made unwelcome advances after the senator had told him he would be promoted to a supervisory role over her. She also said the male aide regularly made crude, misogynistic remarks in the office about his female colleagues and potential female hires. Less than three weeks after reporting the alleged harassment and subsequently claiming that the man retaliated against her for doing so, the woman told chief of staff Jess Fassler that she was resigning because of the office's handling of the matter. She did not have another job lined up. The woman was granted anonymity because she fears retaliation and damage to her future professional prospects. ... Since she left last summer, the woman has been doing part-time contract work. The male aide, Abbas Malik, kept his job. Two weeks ago, however, POLITICO presented the office with its own findings of additional allegations of inappropriate workplace conduct by Malik. Among the claims were that he made a “joke” about rape to a female colleague -- a person whom the office had failed to contact last summer despite repeated urgings by Malik’s accuser to reach out to the person. Gillibrand's office opened a new investigation and dismissed Malik last week. Malik did not respond to requests for comment. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

To the Left you as an individual do not matter, only what group you are a part of matters. Why? Because they don't WANT to go to the trouble of treating individual citizens as that, its easier to 'buy' off a group, than an individual Problem is it leads to group rewards, which ARE group punishments (for those not in the preferred group). Affirmative Action cemented that silly notion into law, and the Left is just taking it to the next step. Posted by: Don Quixote, dreaming the impossible dream at March 12, 2019 12:13 PM (NgKpN) 95

I actually I agree with how she handled the allegation.
She investigated it, met with both parties, issued warnings about what would happen if it happened again. Seems pretty reasonable. The weird thing is, she doesn't agree with how she handled it, at least publicly from her bully pulpit bloviating about believe all women. Its all about tribal politics.
First you protect self, then family, then extended family (tribe), then community. A major fight between right and left now, is who is your Tribe? I always thought of my tribe as all Americans, but the LEFT wants America to be at the community level, with your tribe being a sexual or racial division. When you do that however, because you will protect Tribe, over your Community, you protect your special interest group at a higher priority than you go your community, ie America itself. I have little doubt at this point that the DNC and the donors have decided to back the SJW Maoist faction. But, after the 2016 debacle, the Bernie Bros. demanded (insistently) that they reform the primary, and the DNC, after much sturm und drang, caved in. It would now have to go to a second vote for the superdelegates to decide the outcome. Not that it isn't possible, but even without counting the superdelegate-padding of 2004-2016, that still hasn't occurred since the 70s. But, even so, the media have gone all in for SJW Maoism, so any fishbelly white old dude is gonna have a tough row to hoe in this primary. Hello all. Youngest kidlet and I actually watched college basketball Sunday. Some of the smaller schools didn't have prepared talking points or 'stars' to give stories about, so it was just the smaller school coming from behind and winning. It actually was nice to watch because most of the kids didn't have NBA dreams (too old) and just played. Very enjoyable with very little 'soccer flopping' and even an old Bears fan like me could enjoy old-fashioned ball-handling and skills.

Posted by: Don Quixote, dreaming the impossible dream at March 12, 2019 12:24 PM (NgKpN) I would refer to the fight as tribalism vs. nationalism. The tribalists want people to have primary loyalty to racial or subcultural groups. The people who intend to run such a society think they will be able to maintain control by tailoring messages to each tribe, and playing them against each other. The nationalists look beyond tribe, to anyone they can find common ground with, and have loyalty to the entire group. We could also talk about globalists, but they're just tribalists who think their tribe will be the tribe that dominates all others. They hate the nation-state because they see the broader bonds of loyalty as a threat to their ability to control and manipulate. I went to a state college and did well there. I came from dirt, worked two jobs to pay my way through, and graduated with honors. I was courted by a few companies during my senior year and landed at a good one. Spent a lot of time in smaller companies which were either bought out or went BK. Got to a larger company and picked up an MBA along the way. Through all of that the ivy leaguers were always in the background with their buzzwords and cliches. And through all of that time I found my upward mobility was greatly hampered because not only did the actual intelligence not matter, but those ivy leaguers knew they had to have people do the actual jobs that they had zero actual clue about. So yeah, they enforce that glass ceiling pretty ruthlessly. It's still very entertaining come annual review time and especially in this job market..."so Widget Inc is advertising for a position very similar to mine with a $10k premium......." Arguably it's not even measurable, which would be Harvard's comeback to the assertion that they inflate grades. That's kind of what it's like. There's not a huge academic difference between the kid who got a B- in torts class and the kid who got an A. We're talking a few points difference on a test. For the record, Carol Danvers was partly infused with Mar-Vell's DNA in the 1960s (first captain marvel). She was Ms Marvel who was strong and tough to hurt, but didn't know she had superpowers. She would pass out from migraines, turn into Ms Marvel, go kick ass, then go back and wake up as Carol again. She was an officer in the Air Force.
Carol Danvers lost her powers in a fight between Ms Marvel and Rogue, and Rogue held on to her draining her powers so long that the transfer lasted for years instead of just a few minutes like usual. In that time period, Carol became part of SHIELD, then became Binary, who was insanely powerful and part of the Guardians of the Galaxy. It was during this time period that Monica Rambeau became Captain Marvel with the light powers and is the most interesting incarnation of the name. Carol Danvers was around, but not called that at the time. She eventually lost her Binary powers for reasons and Rogue lost her Ms Marvel powers she'd drained, so Danvers became Warbird, basically a weaker Ms Marvel with some energy manipulation powers and joined the Avengers. Then she became Ms Marvel again in a short-lived comic. In 2012 she becomes Captain Marvel again and gets a new title, which isn't very popular. Someone at Marvel Comics, in the editorial staff, really really likes Captain Marvel and Carol Danvers but fans really are tepid on her. In the movies, she's half-Kree (mom is Kree) and the mystery explosion gives her the full powers. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 12, 2019 01:08 PM (39g3+) 443
They do though. They recruit athletes like any other school.
Said athletes have lower academic achievements then their classmates, and seem to qualify for more need-based scholarships then you'd think they'd actually need. =============== We all have different experiences to generalize from, so here's mine. I'm connected to a college counseling and test prep business, for whatever little that's worth, so I hear about this stuff on occasion. The Ivies don't have athletic scholarships. They do have both means-tested and merit money to offer, and certainly that can be available to athletes. Some schools offer outright grants, and I believe (but don't really know) that others are still more traditionally offering loans and work. But it's not related to the sport, as far as I've heard. Athletes get recruited by the school coaches. At Yale, for example, a given coach has a certain number of spots assigned to him. He can't offer admission himself, but he can "sponsor" the kid through admissions. But there is a catch: His team has to maintain an overall GPA/SAT/ACT rating with admissions each year, so if a coach sponsors a kid of low achievement through the process it's very tough on the team (because the coach has to find a really smart kid to offset the dumbo). Even if admissions can be persuaded to let the kid in, then, he is still an "offset problem" for the coach. When the coach is considering a kid, he screens the application through admissions to get a pre-read. If admissions says the kid is a "go", the school might then issue a "likely letter" which says the kid will likely be admitted if this, that, and the other thing remain true (mostly, he doesn't get arrested, or otherwise embarrass the school, he maintains his grades and everything he said on his application turns out to be true). In certain rare cases (ie, Lacrosse) those likely letters can be issued in tenth grade! That's because good Lacrosse players are really hard to find, and the Ivies (which really don't much compete at football nationally) really can compete at Lacrosse. Regardless of the sport, and how or when the kid gets in, the question of discounted tuition (or full scholarships) is a different question in the Ivies, administered by different people and not related to the sport or how important the athlete might be to the coach. At least, that's what our people believe to be true, fwiw. Posted by: Huck Follywood, back in the saddle again at March 12, 2019 01:08 PM (LISuA) 444

It's like in law school curved classes -- there might be a test with 100 questions, and a raw score of 98 is an A, while a raw score of 94 is a C, and everything in between is a B. When you have a curve that tight... what are you even measuring?
Posted by: Harry Paratestes at March 12, 2019 01:03 PM (GBteo) If the curve is that tight? Then the course and tests are not properly written. There are always different levels of student achievement and knowledge. Heck, even standard writing ability (which it seems a Law Course would want to take into account) would be a differentiating standard. A for excellent should mean, you know, excellent. Posted by: I like cookies at March 12, 2019 01:09 PM (xxAFD) You can set the curve wherever you want. Say you set it at C. Anyone who scores one standard deviation above gets a B, anyone who scores one below gets a D, and two standard deviations give you A's and F's. If the school is like most top tier schools, almost all of your students will fall right near the middle of the curve, no matter what questions you ask, how you grade, or what you grade. So Harvard could set their curve to a C, and you probably wouldn't see anyone with a GPA over a 3.0 (since most students will revert to the mean over their entire academic career), and the majority will be closer to a 2.0 Not sure why that would make any kind of difference to anyone. ============== If you're 28 or 29, like me, it may have changed since our day. More importantly, our people say even well off families should fill out a FAFSA form. Actually they say "everyone" should. Because these schools (private schools often, but Ivies especially) are swimming in money and unsolicited offers of discounted tuition are the norm and not the exception. Even in acceptance letters nowadays, some schools will just offer money right there, without waiting for a FAFSA. also my kids' schools don't give more than a 4.0 even for AP
so, they look "worse" than other schools' applicants. they also refuse to rank. =================== Lots of colleges are ready for this, and "rank" the kids themselves. Stanford, for example, wants the kids entire transcript. Then they pay some schmuck to enter the grade and course into a database, then they exclude anything not a serious class in their own view, award extra weight to AP or Honors classes, and proceed to generate their own version of the kids GPA. Yale does this too. Getting into college is not just academic achievement though. Outside activities, "giving back to the community", application essays, and socio-economic background is also extremely important. Being a first generation college attendee is a golden ticket, I'm told. Posted by: Huck Follywood, back in the saddle again at March 12, 2019 01:23 PM (LISuA) 461

As far as Ivy, the process itself is putting us off - plus having BTDT we aren't as overly concerned about the status part. We do think she'd do very well in one, but she'd do well in lots of schools. There's a lot that goes into "fit," and I'm happy to basically leave that to her until we're really in the recruiting part (if we even get there). She's a good egg and will be a good student at lots of places. She really wants to play in college tho. That's the trick. Thanks again. Posted by: TheQuietMan at March 12, 2019 12:12 PM What excuse was it that Nancy Pelosi gave for Ilhan Omar's anti-Semitism? She comes from a different culture or some such? And wasn't that the same excuse that Angela Merkel gave to German women when they were being sexually assaulted by "refugees"? That German women need to understand that these "refugee" men come from a different culture and German women need to change so as not to entice them or something? You notice that it is not men --- white, conservative, Republican or otherwise --- who are claiming to support women and then throw them under the bus for political power. It is liberal women. Heck, Hillary did it for decades to support her sexual predator husband and yet millions upon millions of women still said "I'm with her". Posted by: I like cookies at March 12, 2019 01:09 PM (xxAFD) As a young assistant prof I struggled with correctly gauging the appropriate level of difficulty when writing an exam. My first one was way too hard, the second too easy. Imagine writing an exam for, say, ninth graders. You're so far removed from them that it's tough. Then I hit on the solution. I wrote every question in three parts: The first part was easy, a fastball down the middle of the plate. Anyone who had studied at all should get it. The second part was more difficult, requiring integration of several concepts. The part was tough indeed. Result: the exams self-curved to about a 75% level. As an added bonus, I could tell at a glance what kind of student someone was by what proportion of each part he got right. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at March 12, 2019 01:40 PM (oRUl9) 472
