49 8 The Convict Ship T.K. Hervey

enroute to Australia.
Posted by: rickb223 at March 14, 2019 09:46 AM (LHT0w)

I wondered about that. If so, I like it even more. The ship is in the middle ground -- it is small compared to the seascape. It is dwarfed by the sky, the clouds and the sea. Going to Australia, a land on the opposite side of the world, adds to the loneliness, and a sense of mystery.

While the moon lights the painting, it is a cold, dim, silvery light. The sea is quiet and the ship is quiet--except for one solitary light in one of the portholes to the rear.

This painting is very arresting. I can't stop looking at it.

The only other part of the whole story is this:

She apparently thought that men beating women was just how things worked. When they would get into arguments, she would scream at him that he wasn't a real man because he wouldn't hit her.

Her dad apparently watched her as someone (I forget who, maybe an ex-boyfriend) put a loaded rifle into her mouth and threatened to blow her brains out. She was screaming (when the barrel wasn't in her mouth) for him to do it. Her dad just watched from the side, smoking his cigar.

Kamala's problem is that she was an aggressive prosecutor who skirted ethics to use the state to bring down people she didn't like. Some of those people are considered victim groups by parts of the left, like sex workers.

In a crowded field, the Left can easily find other choices that check some of her identity boxes.

I'd love it if Kamala barely squeaked by with a win in California and then completely disappeared from the race. Make California's move irrelevant.

The relatively small size of the ship against the expanse of sky and ocean emphasizes the isolation of the vessel and the people in it.

I noticed the detail of light on the water doesn't appear until the image is enlarged. I wonder what it looks like for real.

Problem is they modified the rules after the 2016 primary just to "fix" those sorts of issues. Whoever gets 40% of the vote in the first round gets all of the super delegate votes. And that most likely will not be biden. Sanders is the clear front runner at this point and I doubt that will change much by next summer.

Hillary absolutely lost that primary. Sanders had all the votes. Remember the back room "coin flips?" The "superdelegate" votes? She was the anointed candidate, there was no question she would be the nominee. She paid off all of the DNC's debt prior to the campaign and leveraged that and all her political influence to have DNC personnel, including superdelegates, that were owned by the Clinton machine in place. Nobody else was ever going to win.Sanders could have caused a great deal of trouble by publicly bucking the system, but he kept his mouth shut and took the get right money to go away quietly. Boy did his voters get screwed. And twice, once by the DNC and then again by Bernie himself.

The activist left is smaller and less powerful within their electorate than you might expect.

In order to win the primary, the candidate needs to win in states like Iowa, Arkansas, Alabama, South Carolina, and Florida.

I don't think that bodes well for the minority candidates, all of whom either don't connect well or are simply trying to out-extreme everyone else.

Look to 2016 and Republicans.

It was name recognition and media attention that won it for Trump.

Trump kept getting 1st or 2nd places in primaries, usually around 35-40% (SC was pretty close to 50%, if I remember correctly). With the vote splitting so much, it really is about the one who can maintain some kind of plurality over time.

Remember the idea that Republicans were rejecting Trump because roughly 60% of the party was voting against him? Well, that 60% didn't consolidate around a single candidate, and Trump won the nomination despite the talking point.

The first "10 years to climate doomsday" proclamation I know of was made by a Nobel laureate in biology, in 1970. We're nearing almost 50 years of living under the threat of an apocalypse in 10 years if we don't adopt radical socialist changes.

And people still believe it.

Most people give up on their apocalypse once their cult misses its big day once or twice, but these zealots keep coming back for more.

But, the lesson to take, is that that support was pretty consistent across the race.

Kasich was big in New Hampshire, but nowhere else. Cruz won Iowa, but he fell in places like SC.

Trump, though, was pretty consistently at 35% everywhere.

Look for the guy like that this year, and it's either Biden or Bernie at this early stage.

Agreed. I'm still using Vista on the desktop PC.

8.1 on this laptop.

I have an old Dell Latitude that was committed to ham radio work. I still use it as a sort of utility machine. In fact, I just replaced the battery pack in it, for a surprisingly low $29.95 It has a lot of useful standalone 'stuff' on it. It has Win98. You know what? It works just fine. No head-scratching, no, 'How the hell do I get here or there?', etc.

Moreover, and this is important to me, it has every interface known to computing mankind. RS-233, USB, a true parallel printer port, PCMCIA slot, external 3.5" drive slot. The PCMCIA slot will accept PCMCIA cards, SD adapter, wireless link adapter, and some other stuff.
