Tim Pool mentioned in a post about this general subject matter [Update: I believe it was in this video discussing PayPal's reliance on the leftwing extremist front group the SPLC to tell them who to ban] that the creation of parallel/shadow institutions was a necessary precondition for an actual civil war, as people need access to money and credit, and they can only get that in a civil war if there are now separate Blue and Gray systems. It's an interesting and provocative idea -- and certainly one that has a lot of support in Neocon and Foreign Liberal Internationalist thinking. Those pillars of foreign policy establishment thinking have long claimed that "countries that trade together don't go to war with each other," and have sold trade deals only partly on the economics, seeing them mostly as instruments to create and preserve peace. Well, then: shared commerce and finance keeps America knitted together in peace too, right? But what happens when major corporations, especially those involved in finance and the free exchange of ideas in order to further the aims of participatory democracy, decide they're going to effectively exile half the country out of the normal systems of the country? What happens when half of America won't buy bread from the other half of America, and half of America won't issue a mortgage to half of America based on their failing a Political Test and Corporate Loyalty Oath? What happens to the idea that peoples that trade together can't go to war with each other then? Other algorithmic manipulations (for ex search results) For the other services, it's mostly just deplatforming. /3 As we look at different services, we may want to draw distinctions between ones that are essential for participating in contemporary democratic discourse and ones that are not. This, in my eyes, is a function of the nature of the service and of its market share. /4
We might agree that a normal retail service should be able to choose its customers (barring protected classes). If it has small market share & there are other options, this is less of a big deal. But what about a retail service with a near-monopoly on distribution like Amazon? /5
Since I'm a gay guy, let's assume I'm both an author and that I'm getting married. Well, I have options for other buying my wedding cake. My world doesn't end because Masterpiece won't bake it for me. I'm MUCH more impacted by being banned from Amazon. Yet which is protected? /6
Amazon's ability to ban books when it has a near monopoly on distribution strikes me as deeply concerning. Let's take Twitter. What bothers me isn't that it has terms of service. (I respect @jack's earnestness tbh.) It's the uneven enforcement of its terms, the arbitrariness & lack of transparency around their enforcement, and lack of due process. /11 Bottom line: We're entering an era of privatized censorship, and it's not clear what a "free society" means in this context. There is precedent for this. When we invaded North Africa during WWII, we issued different currency. The seal was a different color. The War Department wanted to ensure that the currency could be canceled if we lost and the Nazis and Italians ended up with loads of US currency. We didn't need to cancel that currency because we won, but we could have.
This could backfire on them. If they lose, *their* money could all be canceled. If they want to do this, it is because they are assuming that they will win - and that is probably not a great assumption. Certainly below "sure thing." This would be retributive, not due to backing out of a lost theater of war.
But what happens when major corporations, especially those involved in finance, decide they're going to effectively exile half the country out of the normal systems of the country?
The go broke, probably. Shares crash, at very least - that kind of move is not very accretive to shareholder value. Now, they might not care about shares (some firms would, since they live on their market cap but Google and Apple certainly don't). It would be a great way to dissolve enterprise value and create a tremendous market out of thin air for competitors.

It isn't even a question of "won't." It's a question of "can't." It doesn't matter whether most or even a quorum of market participants *want* trade with each other, they'll be unable to do so.

I think this is the answer. It won't be easy and it certainly won't be painless. We don't really know how to go about breaking up something like Google. Ma-Bell lent itself to regional breakup, but Google doesn't.
Breaking up Google and the high tech cartels will be a nasty, ugly, high-impact business. We don't know how to do it. But we need to figure it out. If we get it wrong, we get it wrong.
Breaking these giants up will also have serious consequences on global internet infrastructure. Things could get slow or fracture - at least for a little while. Again, I don't see this as a reason to *not* do it, but there will be serious consequences.

I speak out in public about being Conservative all the time, and no one 'shushes' me (expect my 90 year old Mom at times).

Except that it's bullshit. Always has been. The classic example is that France and Germany/Prussia had huge amounts of trade between them just before the last three wars they fought against each other. I believe that before the Franco/Prussian War and WWI they were each others PRIMARY trading partner.
Trade is just one of many factors that promote peace or war, and by itself is no guarantee either way.

On top of that, Chrome offers just Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and AOL (???) -- any other search engines would have to added in by the user. Cashlessness also has a serious chilling effect against fairly large populations. Poor people and the elderly are particularly hard hit by it. Sweden went nearly whole-hog on the cashless idea. Currency was legal, but they encouraged people and businesses to reject cash payments. They instructed their banks to limit cash withdrawals.
Late last year, even Sweden started walking it back. It made life really hard for a lot of people and they were getting a lot of blowback over it.
We have a lot more people in this country who are - to use the industry term - "underbanked" than they do in Sweden. I think that government corruption and the inability to fly pallets of hundreds around will be a final check, but a lot of people will be seriously hurt if they try it. I don't think the powers that be care about hurting people, but if they go too hard with it they run personal risk.

well this is the whole thing. The idiots of "the party" (hint: they're not really part of the party) claim that CONSISTENCY demands that if they want freedom of association for themselves, they cannot deny the right of others to freedom of association.
But here's the thing: they DON'T have freedom of associaton for themselves, and the left laughs at their requests for it.
So the left gets to impose forced association to benefit all of its client groups, and the right, meanwhile, gets pummeled by leftist-controlled corporations who DO have the right to free association deplatforming/banning them.
But the "principled right" gets to keep its unfulfilled request for free association, I guess, without the taint of "inconsistency."
Meanwhile, someone who is actually smart and not pretend-smart like the cuck right says that actual consistency means the same rules for everyone: If the left is going to impose rules denying US the right to free association to protect its client groups, then we can and should do the same.
If the left should ever agree to freedom of association broadly, then we can have a conversation about negotiating that.
But the Cuck Right insists that WE get the bad end of the bargain on both sides: We are simultaneously the ones punished by an unregulated right to refuse service, and the ones punished by a denied right to refuse service when we would like to exercise it.
This, to the Cucks, is "consistency."

breaking up Ma Bell was a net positive. Breaking up Google and their ilk and busting up the cartels will be a net positive, too. Unlike AT&T, though, I suspect breaking up the big tech firms will bring a fair amount of short-term pain and disruption.
Even if it doesn't happen naturally (and I think it will), they can see to it that the process is as disruptive as possible as a retributive measure.
Still needs to happen regardless.

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - U.S. Border Patrol agents working near Sunland Park apprehend 180 illegal aliens in the early morning hours of February 26. This group, like many others before, is comprised primarily of Central American families and unaccompanied juveniles.
U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested the illegal border crossers for violating the immigration laws of this country. Border Patrol EMT's conducted initial medical screenings and determined that some of the subjects required additional attention. Sunland Park Emergency Medical Service responded to the scene where they provided medical attention and determined that some of the illegal aliens needed further medical treatment. Those in need of further medical attention were transported to a local hospital.
This is a situation that Border Patrol Agents continue to face in southern New Mexico: hundreds of parents and children being encountered by agents after having faced a dangerous journey in the hands of unscrupulous smugglers. This is the second group of more than 100 people since the beginning of the fiscal year in the Sunland Park area. Similar large groups are being encountered at other border locations in the El Paso Sector.
Criminal organizations continue to exploit the immigration system in order to enhance their illicit activities without due regard to the risks of human life. In most cases these smugglers never cross the border themselves in order to avoid apprehension.

Our founders thought that the pluralism of private interests would necessarily check both each other and the government.
That worked for a long time.
But government, through many means but mostly through regulation, eventually co-opted all of the large interests in the private sector. There is no more pluralistic enlightened self-interest - that is dead.
In this environment, where the will of the State is enforced for them by private interests, the Constitution is non-applicable. It may as well not exist at all.
This problem is insoluble. Until the private sector is separated from the State, the situation can't change.

For all intents AT&T pre-divestiture was a government regulated monopoly. The feds set rates and margins. Had they not AT&T would have been more analogous to Google.

That was after they picked up major book market share. Bezos' genius play was to break open online retail. People had trepidation about buying online because you can't sample the goods first. He picked something that is a known quantity in every way. It doesn't matter where or how you get a book, you get a book.
He was right. The book business was ideal to break open e-commerce. They got big with VC money and broke into the business before floating their stock. The rest of their retail business was largely stock-funded, but the successful book business was VC-funded.

Definitely. They *were* a government-regulated monopoly. I didn't mean to sound flippant. The breakup was hugely disruptive to AT&T and her subsidiaries. Western Electric didn't really survive it, and Bell Labs atrophied. In terms of the telecommunications market, though, it wasn't all that disruptive. Service kept going. Part of this is because AT&T worked very hard to do that. They had business (like wanting to break into the computer business) and regulatory incentives to do so, and they did.
The new high tech juggernauts would have no such incentives to try to make it go well.

Well, even fiat money is not worthless if you can pay taxes with it. If the excess produced was taxed out of existence we would have no inflation. The problem with the actual reality of fiat money is the debt accrued to it by borrowing it from a private entity, e.g., the Federal Reserve, Bank of England, etc. By creating only the principal lent, and not the interest, you guarantee an eventual result of catastrophe when the debt cannot be repaid. This results in more government intrusion, more borrowing of fiat currency, and more restrictions of your liberty. And this is exactly what is intended by those that own the currency franchise.

See I'm torn here and its between two different principles.
The first principle is freedom of the market; you can do what you want with your own goods and services and no one can order you to serve someone else or sell to someone else. This is also related to freedom of association, where you cannot order people to associate with and transact with anyone else.
The second principle is freedom of expression, where as a people and a principle of liberty we do not punish those for mere disagreement and holding ideas or expressing them simply because we don't like them.
I think it comes down to the same concept as slander and libel: we decide as a culture and society that we will voluntarily limit our expression of certain nonessential liberties so that we all can live in peace and maximum bonus to the largest number of people.

If it weren't, then to answer your question directly, it would also have been wrong because for some reason we never outlawed communism. Going after the perpetrators as unregistered foreign agents (which they were and, since Manafort it is the worst crime ever, shouldn't be objectionable) would have been right and proper.

I have checking/savings/loans with some of the major banking players. But right now my local credit union knocks the socks off of all of them. Their software is of the highest order. I think the principle is more about who is armed and how much rather than who's doing it. If Facebook screws over literally millions of conservative comments and accounts (as recently proved) that's a bit different than me telling someone I won't allow them back in the store because they keep coming in wearing a Nazi uniform (honest to God did that while working at a convenience store).
One is an individual decision, the other is massive in its scope and impact.

A better illustration using Masterpiece is this: Masterpiece had no problems selling off the shelf stuff to anyone. It was custom work that was the issue. Same with banking. Any product offered to public at large must be offered to all customers (assuming legal usage) with no exceptions.
No bank should be forced to act as private bankers just like the Masterpiece guy shouldn't be forced to bake a custom cake.

So they rush out to fix the world and get in faces, taking jobs like "social media coordinator" "Human resources" and so on. They end up in the positions where they can do this kind of damage while we are busy just working and minding our own business.

Here's what started the YouTube comments will get shut down issue.
People were putting up videos of kids, actual kids, like, you know, children, doing various and sundry normal stuff like tumbling or dance or what have you. The creeps showed up in the comments. Actual creeps, not trolls. Actual need to be covered in honey and staked to a fire ant anthills creeps.
So, YouTube, being composed of rocket surgeons, decided the best way to get right of the creeps and pervs was to get rid of comments altogether and/or to restrict or ban parents or coaches for putting up completely fine videos. Because that's easier.
It's going super well for YouTube.

No, "real" money has an inherent (let's not get sophist here, bear with me) value independent of the issuing entity. The government can declare their previous banknotes null and void, or the market can decide that (confederate). The government can make gold illegal, but that's not quite the same thing. They can't make it un-valuable is the point.
I'm not a gold bug, but the underlying unit of account has no basis in reality, other than some 1s and 0s, and is subject to political whims and golly knows what else. As a practical matter owning some, a little bit, I think, is wise for several reasons. Always has been.

We don't know the answer to the question. We might not. It has never been possible to even ask the question before. There are only four types of communication (broadly speaking):
- One-on-one: A conversation. We're really good at this. It is probably the oldest type of communication.
- One-on-many: A speech. We're really good at this. It is also a really old form.
- Many-on-one: Massive feedback (like a letter-writing campaign, flooding the switchboard, etc.). We aren't especially good at this.
- Many-on-many: Brand new and a total unknown. Social Media and its progenitors (like bulletin boards and comments areas like this one) is entirely many-to-many. It doesn't seem like we know how to deal with this, but it's also so new that I don't think we can tell yet.

Wal Mart is really stepping up their game with regards to delivery and quality. I only wish they had a decent video service.
Same with Netflix We've got that too but their content is getting worse and worse. It seems there can't be anything produced these days without some sort of gay component. In most cases, it's just gratuitous and has no bearing on the story line. Netflix will be easier to give up.

Most people don't know that there is a limited supply of Cougar Gold every year and it sells out early.
Without connections or bribery, I don't know if it is even possible to buy a case of Cougar Gold.

If you purchased movies, those are not part of Prime. Those will still be yours as long as the licensing system works.
For the few movies I want to own, I still buy the bluray/digital packs. Why? Because if the streaming service shuts down, you lose your digital movies. As long as the player works, you will still have access.
This is where we get into the huge discussion about what does ownership mean in the digital age. Hell, I own physical copies of Civ IV and every so often the license goes wonky and I have to reup the license online. Someday, the authentication server will not work and then I will be left with actual physical copies of a game I cannot play.
This is becoming a major problem as servers shut down. For example, Ultraviolet is closing as of 7.31.19 and if you don't relink your movies to a retailer POOF gone.

There is value in gold... it is a commodity because of that. Like other commodities, its value could theoretically go to zero but there is less chance of that than there is with truly fiat money. Fiat money is, in the end, just a small piece of cotton paper that is intrinsically worth next to nothing.

Governments have to force people to use "their" money. That's the difference. There's nothing innately valuable about anything if you really want to get technical.
Control of the money was always a big deal. FDR criminalized posession of an element on the periodic table. They said people were "hoarding" it, then built Ft. Knox, and stuffed 10,000 tons of it in there. But that's not "hoarding" presumably.
They also importantly repudiated contract law and forbade the use of gold-clause contracts and reneged on gold bonds paying interest.
