The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The rule of law is indispensable to a thriving and vibrant society. It shields citizens from government overreach. It allows businesses to invest with confidence. It gives innovators protection for their discoveries. It keeps people safe from dangerous criminals. And it allows us to resolve differences peacefully through reason and logic. Rod Rosenstein, Deputy US attorney General

Quote II

“This president is trying to keep a campaign promise to all of those people that he swore he would build a wall! And those people who want the wall are not patriots.”

“They are not people who love this country. They are not people who stand up for what’s right!” Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA)

Quote III

“I don’t come here for this rag every day, and it’s a rag. That’s all it is to me,” said Chambers about respecting the flag. “When you show a way to persuade Jews to sanctify and worship the swastika, when you show me that I’ll come up here and stand while you all hypocritically pretend that rag is something that it definitely is not.“ Nebraska state Sen. Ernie Chambers

Quote IV

The fly-over states have become the passed-over states, that’s why red state voters are so pissed off. They don’t hate us, they want to be us. They want to go to the party. It’s like we’re the British royal family and they’re Megan Markle’s dad. Bill Maher

John Wayne Airport Could Be Renamed After New Upset Over an Old Interview

The first shots may have been fired in a war against The Duke.

A debate is now underway over whether a Southern California airport should bear the name of screen legend John Wayne, who died nearly 40 years ago at age 72.

The discussion stems from the recent social media uproar that followed the resurfacing of a 1971 Playboy interview in which Wayne made remarks that critics described as racist and homophobic.

A 'funny thing' about the Green New Deal. Science sites do not express disbelief that many of the GND goals are not possible today. "Yet they can poke fun of President Trump.

US President Donald Trump today urged wireless carriers to deploy 5G and "6G" networks "as soon as possible," seemingly ignoring the small problem that 6G technology doesn't exist yet.

"I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible," Trump wrote on Twitter this morning. "It is far more powerful, faster, and smarter than the current standard. American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind."

The opioid crisis has entered the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The opioid epidemic has become a national crisis. While most victims of this modern phenomenon are addicted adults, there are newborn babies born of those addicts who suffer from withdrawal the moment they enter the world. These babies end up in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) an ICU for infants and experience pain and suffering before they can experience anything else in their world.

Munchausen syndrome is a factitious disorder, a mental disorder in which a person repeatedly and deliberately acts as if he or she has a physical or mental illness when he or she is not really sick. Munchausen syndrome is considered a mental illness because it is associated with severe emotional difficulties. via WebM

The California GOP is afflicted with Munchausen By Proxy.

To paraphrase the oft-misquoted Mark Twain, rumors of the death of the California Republican Party are greatly exaggerated. The results of the November 2018 elections, while not completed until December, got worse each passing day until we came up with the final tally. It was, to use the technical terminology preferred by political pundits, a massacre, a slaughter, a bloodbath. As I’m an eternal optimist, and in an effort to stop myself from curling up into the fetal position and avoid making plans to flee the once-Golden State like so many others, I am able to see the good news buried within these dismal results. (“There’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!”

I wrote in October that the continued leftward lurch of California Democrats would result in such dismal living conditions that voters would have to take notice. Unfortunately, it’s going to take a bit longer.

Fishermen, campers and the back yard enthusiast all know the dread bzzzzzz sound. Perhaps that noise will be a distant memory. Genetically engineered mosquitoes are on the way.

Scientists have launched a major new phase in the testing of a controversial genetically modified organism: a mosquito designed to quickly spread a genetic mutation lethal to its own species, NPR has learned.

For the first time, researchers have begun large-scale releases of the engineered insects, into a high-security laboratory in Terni, Italy.

"This will really be a breakthrough experiment," says Ruth Mueller, an entomologist who runs the lab. "It's a historic moment."

The goal is to see if the mosquitoes could eventually provide a powerful new weapon to help eradicate malaria in Africa, where most cases occur.

What makes Venezuela’s food crisis all the more grim is that experts agree it is a result of human decision-making. “It’s not due to droughts, or floods,” Deborah Hines, the World Food Program Representative in Colombia, told me. “The situation is purely political.” Far from alleviating the crisis, Maduro has made basic necessities contingent on political loyalty. In 2016, to preserve his support, he launched a government-subsidized food program, known as the Local Food Production and Provision Committees (claps). Venezuelans are eligible to receive a monthly food handout, and other benefits, as long as they register for the Fatherland Card, which officials use to track voting participation. clap boxes usually arrive late and half-empty, but, during election seasons, they are stuffed, and recipients like Vegas get text messages from local representatives such as “Love is repaid with love.”

Well it is a good thing he didn't tweet out #LearnToCode or he could have been locked out of his account for a week.

A few days ago, the Twitter account of Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, published a post calling for the murder of the British novelist Salman Rushdie.

Under the account called @khamenei_ir, (which, while not blue-checked, is the account Iranians say the mullah uses), Khamenei tweeted that the death fatwa pronounced in 1989 by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, against Rushdie for his book, The Satanic Verses, was "solid and irrevocable."

48 I am going to repost this from the Food Thread because I would love to see AOC respond.
The Green New Deal proposes eliminated cows due to their methane flatulence contribution to Global Climate WTF - ever.

In an earlier thread I asked, semi-rhetorically, " do sea cows fart?"

I had NO idea. But after some research I found out that , in fact, Manatees actually must fart in order to survive.

...manatees rely on flatulence to float or sink in water, storing and releasing gas to enable them to rise or drop at will in the water. Even though manatees have neither swim bladders nor hind limbs to help them swim, a combination of dense front-body ribs and flatulence helps them to regulate their buoyancy and stay horizontal in a water column.

Farting is so important that if they don't do it they become constipated and unable to dive properly, spinning with their tails raised above their heads and struggling to achieve balance.

It's simple really.

In order to #savetheplanet AOC will have to #killthemanatees.

84 And today's Gospel and homily was on "love your enemy".

Similar over here.

The Bishop of Denver put out an epistle concerning the investigation which the Feds have commenced here, to document all the kids diddled (by priests) in this diocese. The present priests, who haven't diddled anybody, have to deal with this now.

That's really all the local priests CAN do. Just to tell us not to forsake God's Church because of cynical ungodly screwheads who weaseled their way into it. Most people in Boulder County would consider me one of those screwheads (although I hope the Catholics here don't).

85 Today's Deep Thoughts by someone who is enraged that everyone else doesn't automatically accept that We Have Only Twelve Years Left To Save The Planet.

can't wait until 2030, the planet is melting, mt hood never has snow on it again, 25 million people climate refugees are clamoring to move into oregon, and the @Oregonian is publishing op-eds from readers worried about the lack of parking and those egregious scooter users

2030 is eleven years from now. Not only are the Oregon Cascades going to be without snow (ironically, a major snowstorm is going to hit Portland tonight), but Oregon, with four million people, is going to have twenty-five million climate refugees trying to move here.

This is the Democratic base. They deeply and sincerely believe this.

God knows what they will do if Trump gets reelected - this guy is already questioning democratic political processes, because democracy doesn't move fast enough when We Have Only Twelve Years Left To Save The Planet.

92 I shouldn't push around the kind of guys who can gene-sequence mosquitoes, but I'd recommend coming up with a new race that either wasn't a host for the malaria bug, or didn't have a taste for humans. Lots of birds and fish kind of rely on them for food. We don't have a happy record, messing with the invisible web of all creation, et al.

One of God's noblest creatures is the Yellowstone cutthroat trout. Mosquitoes eat us. The trout jump up and eat the mosquitoes. Then the trout jump, more or less, into your boat.. Shortest food cycle I've ever seen. The fish flesh was pink, and old timers said that was blood.

Are they breeding Volkswagens?

Nah, they just sound like them. "Love bugs" or "Airplane bugs" (they fly United) are larger than mosquitoes and when they mate, the male doesn't fly away, he stays attached to the female (which I would think would hurt like a SOB) while she flies around slowly looking for moving cars and motorcycles to fly into.
They make a grand mess during their mating season and are really difficult to remove, especially from a radiator. Can't leave them on too long because like Aliens, they have acid for blood and will ruin paint.
The little fuckers are spawns of B. L. Z. Bubb whom the geniii at University of Florida thought mosquitoes would die out if they mated with the LBs who wouldn't produce offspring.

Now we have two nuisances down here instead of one. Really, 3 if you count the Coward County Sheriff's Department.

169 Pitchfork: Perhaps the band's most backwards-looking album, it is quintessentially and self-consciously Pink Floyd, for better or for worse. The Endless River is stately, grandiose, and searching, but it is also bloated, pompous, and so conceptually top-heavy it just might fall off the CD rack or crash your computer.

I was never a Floyd fan, although I like some of their stuff in small doses. I do respect their artistry and influence though.

Basically how I approach Wagner.

And both times, the second detour was while taking the first one.
Saturday, had to go around the LONG way because rockslide closed I-40 at the TN / NC state line. On the way back through the same detour, the semi blocked the windy 2 lane road so we had to backtrack and take another road even further to get around that. The new (very curvy) road had a raging river alongside of it that was only lacking a couple of feet of coming out into the road.

Then today the tree came down in front of us, so we turned around and went back several miles and across a different gap in the mountains, when we came up on the fire dept that had the road blocked off because of the downed power line. Had to backtrack a little ways and then take another side road. Not as bad as Saturday but man....

Mr Wednesday Night was in a thread earlier dropping this bullshit, off-topic. I wish he'd find another shtick. Or just leave us alone."

My feeling is that this is a totally fucked up, blame the US way of interpreting something that is actually happening. First of all, understand that provoking a crisis is needed to *stop* the starving, and ending it is not "exploiting" it. The US, Columbia, and Brazil (and some others) worked together this week to give Maduro a choice - they would move aid for the citizens there, and if he cared about his people, he could accept it. That would have been the simple choice. *Or* he could have reacted violently, and done everything he could to prolong the suffering, in order to hang on to power. Also, everyone in the power structure in Venezuela is also going to have to clearly choose a side. Maduro chose - and I believe he Chose Poorly.

There was a reason Guaido made a surprise trip to Columbia yesterday - and it's because he doesn't want to be the target of one of Maduro's hit squads once the shooting starts. And it means that *he* thinks that time is coming very soon - a few days, no more, I'd guess.

Right. To the extent it works, it works if the country is homogenous and populated by people with a strong moral compass and a high work ethic.

That was more or less true of Sweden in 1960. It's not true of Sweden today.

319 I've heard ordinary people advocating for socialism who knew they wouldn't be in charge. One of them got "free" medical care in Europe when traveling. So they only see what they think is good and don't see a clearer picture, perhaps because of the brainwashing by the media and schools.

Right. Sweden never was a truly socialist country. It has a market economy with very high levels of taxation and social spending, which is a different thing.

321 Socialism like in 1960 Sweden led to them becoming so apathetic they imported rapefugees. So even in a small very homogenous country it doesn't not scale up past family. It doesn't work on a village level. Not even the pilgrims could make that work.

I admit that I am highly skeptical of socialism at any scale whatsoever, and I would point to many failed communes as evidence. The more interesting point is the difference you are highlighting between high-trust and low-trust societies, which are enormous and underappreciated. For some reason, the Left wants to turn every society into a low-trust society.

It's not "provoking a war" - it's providing an acceptable humanitarian rationale for Columbia and Brazil to seize their respective border provinces, in order to ensure the flow of aid. (with US logistical support, no US troops in any great number needed) No need to go to Caracas; with the border provinces freed from the Venezuelan military, it will give Guaido a base to set up his government, and with borders and supplies shut off, Maduro's govm't in Caracas will collapse in 1 or 2 weeks.

Venezuelan military is no longer a real concern, they are no longer an actual fighting force, just a band of thugs with some small arms, fit for beating up on civilians but nothing more.

I'm betting that Bolsonaro can look at a map just like I can, and can see that southern Venezuela is so undeveloped that, for any force moving up from Brazil, you would only need to take and hold one single highway to control the entire southern half of the country.

388 My fellow Morons and 'Ettes: State Senator Ernie Chamber is the single most bigoted, racist, hate filled individuals in the entire state of Nebraska. Without Ernie constantly stirring the racist pot like the Energizer Bunny, race relations in Omaha would improve 100%. He is not a stupid man; in the Unicameral, he plays Robert's Rules of Order like Stevie Ray Vaughan played the guitar. His electoral district is comprised of black people and Caucasians eaten alive by white guilt which is why he gets re-elected every two years. ( These are the same people that gave Obummer his one Nebraska Electoral vote in 2007 and 2011.

We got rid of him once by passing the anti-Ernie Law, aka term limits. Unfortunately, one of his fellow travelers squatted in his seat until enough time had passed that Ernie could reclaim it. So once more we are stuck with him turning every proposed Unicameral law into a "racist" plot against the helpless victims of his district.

Newer seat-back entertainment systems on some airplanes operated by American Airlines, United Airlines and Singapore Airlines have cameras, and it's likely they are also on planes used by other carriers.

American, United and Singapore all said Friday that they have never activated the cameras and have no plans to use them.

However, companies that make the entertainment systems are installing cameras to offer future options such as seat-to-seat video conferencing, according to an American Airlines spokesman.

399 Cuban soldiers in Grenada didn't exactly fold like a bad poker hand.

Keep that in mind when "discounting" how they might fight. They'll fight damn well, and damn hard, is how they'll fight.

They won't win, they won't stand a chance.

Their leadership will fail them, as always, and their logistics are, and will be, a joke.

The accurate, desirable view of this?

We need a truly Free, Nation of Cuba, and from that raise a Cuban Division to serve in the U.S. Army, and a "__th" Marine to serve similarly in the Corps.

You can plan to defeat the Cuban forces in Venezuela, and ought do so with no quarter.

Afterwards though, plan to Monroe Doctrine the all hell out of Cuba itself, and then raise and recruit their best to our benefit.

Worked for the Brits in working with the Gurhka. Not that any Cuban rates at that level, but I still don't wanna get in an alley knife fight with a Cuban.

I never can keep those jets or sharks sorted out, anyway.

410 so I'm reading the Outlanders manga, from waaay long ago. I'm told there's an anime too but also that the anime sucks, so I'm sticking with the manga.

Am told it is based on Urusei Yatsura, which is a more-classic for some reason, but from what I've read of its plot, it's stupid. Again, sticking with Outlanders manga.

Outlanders manga so far features a biomechanical ship ripped right off HR Giger. The main character on Earth is a Peter-Parker type working for a Japanese newspaper (Tetsuya; all Japanese protagonists are Tetsuya, cf. 'Akira'). Hey at least he's not a high school student like most shounen. So that's a plus!

The "villain" Kahm, if you can call her that, needs to wear more clothes, but Japan and but manga. In her first reconnaissance to Earth she's lost her sword and Japanese Peter Parker has stolen it.

There is a written accent on the O.
(I can't do that here.)
That's the only reason the O is stressed.

Without a marked accent, the stress is always on the penultimate syllable --- unless the word ends in D, R, L, or Z, where it will be on the last syllable.

So you are correct that most two-syllable words would stress the first.

425 391 -- Nebraska is broken into several electoral units. Theoretically, the candidates for each seat does not belong to a political party. It just so happens that most seats are held by conservatives rather than liberals. The idea is to save money by having only one deliberative body with the populace as a whole serving as the second, making our wishes known through the voting process. Laws are proposed, discussed, and either passed or not passed like the other forty nine states with their two houses. Particularly contentious laws usually end up on the ballot .
the next election.

394 -- Thanks to Ernie, you are completely correct. But there is a substantial number of guilt ridden Caucasians in the edges who vigorously virtue signal by voting for the man.

The interesting thing is that South Omaha is now over run with our neighbors to the South of the border. In fact, if I am not mistaken, the southern invaders out number the native North Omahans, and have absolutely no problem letting that be known -- especially around election time.

Yes. It is the Champion car engine, also used in half-ton pickups of the day. Introduced in 1939, at 164 cubic inches, got increased to 170 in 1941, IIRC. I think a change from Babbitt to shell bearings was concurrent. It's a flathead six, with 4 main bearings, which, because of its fairly short stroke for the day, hold up just fine.

That engine continued in production, with some changes, of course, until 1960, and then begat an OHV six that had basically the same bottom end, for another 4 years.

I doubt CBC, being all about "Canadian Content" would deign to film in Arizona, unless perhaps the story line called for a character to be in Arizona for some reason.

But the grassland/scrub pine in the Alberta foothills, at circa 3500 foot elevation is quite similar to the 5000 to 6000 foot elevation country in northern Arizona. We even have cactus there. But no stately Saguaros; just a ground-hugging dwarf prickly pear. But it has pretty flowers.

If you stay off the soft side of the seams, you aren't bothering too much.

Trout like to hang in the slower water and watch the fast edge for food.

461 But the grassland/scrub pine in the Alberta foothills, at circa 3500

What struck me was lush grass on one hand but dusty corrals on the other. And the sun was always shining like AZ and CA and not like never in WI

Their treatment of ranching isn't completely ridiculous and thus entertaining.

Yeah, I don't let my guys get 100 yards downstream from the boat ramp until we're casting properly.

Unfortunately, a lot people think it's more important to be out front chasing their flies rather than teaching their clients how to...you know?

Very generally speaking, within the same biome, 1000 miles increase of latitude is equivalent to 1000 ft decrease of elevation.

If Albetra foothills are 1500 miles N of your Arizona locale, you should see similaries.

Everyone here knows of the Southern Poverty Law Center, and their biased work on labeling 'Hate Groups'.

But...someone locally on one of our social media sites decided to link to an Annapolis MD, Patch news article concerning Hate Groups in Maryland.

It is shocking to see people pushing back against the SPLC in the comments.

The opioid epidemic has become a national crisis. While most victims of this modern phenomenon are addicted adults, there are newborn babies born of those addicts who suffer from withdrawal the moment they enter the world.

I know of a woman, on methadone, who had a baby last year. The baby had to stay behind in the hospital an extra week after birth because of their addiction(s). Covered under Obamacare, I'm certain.

I was just looking up information on breast feeding. It seems unclear if the infant will become re-addicted if the mother breast feeds. Some indication it can be lethal.

controversial genetically modified organism: a mosquito designed to
quickly spread a genetic mutation lethal to its own species, NPR has
learned.

For the first time, researchers have begun large-scale releases of the
engineered insects, into a high-security laboratory in Terni, Italy.

"This will really be a breakthrough experiment," says Ruth Mueller, an entomologist who runs the lab. "It's a historic moment."

The goal is to see if the mosquitoes could eventually provide a powerful
new weapon to help eradicate malaria in Africa, where most cases occur."

You deplorables in fly-over land just wish you could be like us special people!

It's amazing how there is not even an attempt to reduce the budget. I guess everything in it is absolutely necessary

You know what I figured out? We have these imitation milk crates, real lightweight, real cheap we bought at Lowe's. Keep 'em in the back of the SUV to put groceries in so they don't slide all the hell around on the trip home from the grocery store.

The other day the light bulb (finally) went off in my head and I figured I was loading them from grocery plastic bags, when I could actually take them into the store and throw my stuff directly into them. Skip an entire second loading and the plastic bags.

The clerk at the self check out had to override something because of the additional weight on the scale, but he said, "I like that. That makes sense."

Is that how they plan on paying for the public pension deficit of around $100 trillion? That sounds like it will work.

Posted by: Ripley at February 25, 2019 07:36 AM (MxEKc)

566 Well, that and gambling tax, Ripley. Plus new debt. Genius!

A better plan would be to simply pay for it and all otehr pension funds as part of the Green New Deal. No taxes or deficits required.

They're more expensive now then when I bought them years ago. I can't believe it took me years to figure this out. I used to do time and motion studies to figure out unnecessary and redundant steps. The redundant steps were:
Placing item in plastic bag
Placing bags in shopping cart
Loading plastic bags into milk crates at car
