The Morning Rant

"So, it is now being claimed that Jussie's hiring of extra help to shoot himself in the foot was due to a salary dispute. Oh. How much was he making? According to this article, he was pulling in somewhere around $125,000, or maybe a bit below. That's right, 125 large. Oh, and that's *per episode*. And most shows nowadays have, what, 10, 13 episodes per season? You do the math. Heck, *I'll* do the math: Smollett's salary could be as high as $1.625 million per season. And he's complaining? Seriously? Tell you what, Jussie, you don't like your salary, just send it to me, I'd be happy to take it off of your hands. Then you wouldn't have to complain no more, you could stop faking hate crimes, and I could retire with a whole troop of females to keep me suitably entertained. It's win-win."

Hooray For Tollywood!

I found out, while slaving away tirelessly at internet research for all of you morons, that it's not just Bollywood, it's more complicated than that. There's also Pollywood, Kollywood, Tollywood, and more. A number of different regions of India have their own film industries. Tollywood, for example, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to filming in the Telugu language, based in Film Nagar, a neighborhood of Hyderabad, Telangana.

And all of these different regions have one thing in common: they all produce spectacularly beautiful actresses. Like the beauty shown above. Look at her eyes. Aren't they amazing? You can get lost in there, so be careful. Here's another beauty, from Kollywood:

shriya saran 01.jpg

Of course, unless you're really into Indian cinema, you, like me, won't have any idea who these ladies are, so I'm just going to tell you:

Tollywood beauty: Payal Rajput
Kollywood beauty: Shriya Saran

37 Oh my goodness, that "biologically female penis" Twitter thread is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.

Question:
@kimmydeenyc
I follow you for two reasons: 1st you're fierce, talented and say super smart things. But 2nd- I want to understand perspectives other than cis ones and use the right language when it comes up. So can you please explain the biological penis comment more? Really confused.

If you thought this might be subtle trolling, I am right there with you. But in any event, the original poster did provide this helpful answer:
@IndyaMoore
A biologically female penis is a non artificial penis (eg: dildo, vibrator,) that is part of a woman's body.

Okay, so that's clear enough. Someone had to go bring something approaching the realm of "logic" into it, though:
@Berathe
Isn't the danger of saying that that any surgical intervention to transition could then be seen as merely cosmetic surgery so no longer eligible under the NHS or under many medical insurances? If a penis is female, why remove it? Why transition in any way, even? What's the point?

Now, this isn't a slam-dunk - this poster still thinks that this isn't entirely nonsense and that the real concern is around policy and coverage questions. But the question is accidentally somewhat rational. Partial points.

But it wouldn't last. It couldn't last. This guy then drops a major whopper on us:
@LoveWinsFag
I don't think we should have to censor our understandings of our reality to appeal to the medical model. If they want to deny trans ppl gender affirming surgery so bad that they'd do it just because trans ppl say "female penis," they'd find a way to deny us regardless

Wow. Just wow. This person argues that the question is entirely invalid and that policy shouldn't be taken into account *at all* because a "trans" person obtaining "gener-affirming surgery" (this is the new hotness for sex change operations, BTW) then it is simply forcing compliance with reality. Their reality. The medical model needs to come along with their "their reality."

In black and white. Right there. No reality. Just "our reality" matters. Force the world to match "our reality" regardless of sense, possibility, or anything else.

I want these people off my planet. Maybe the Space Force can build a sanitarium on the moon.

Yeah, I knew that sentence had problems when I typed it. What I meant was that, although he was supposed to be the epitome of cool in the 60s, the stuff he wore, and the mannerisms just seem so ridiculous. The nadir was in Diamonds Are Forever, where he's wearing a pink tie that's about 10" too short. Totally took me out of the movie.

My only problem with Brosnan is the action sequences, and especially some of the opening ones, dominated his movies so it was hard to tell how he fit the role.

Pro: Enforcement is way down, auditing is way down this year, so there's decent odds that no matter what you put down, as long as all your income is documented, it'll be waved through and no one will say anything.

Governor-elect Bill Lee has continued his preference for appointing those closely affiliated to either liberals or Bill Haslam to top positions in his Administration. Branscom spent five and a half years as the Deputy Mayor and Chief Operating Officer for extreme liberal Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero, during which time Rogero opposed 2d Amendment rights, advocated strongly for LGBTQ issues (including vocal opposition to legislation designed to protect women and girls from men entering their bathrooms and locker rooms), and actively supported the anti-Trump "Women's March" protests, including speaking at the January 2018 event in Knoxville.

that's about 10" too short. Totally took me out of the movie.++++++++++++Funny you should mention that. Just watched Diamonds a coupla nights ago.Seemed like everyone involved was merely going through the motions. Connery appeared so blase, as if he was totally tired of being Bond, James Bond. So sad compared to the earlier flicks. Still, for most he will forever set the bar. I do like Craig in the role and the two of them run neck-and-neck in my opinion.

I haven't seen the whole thing but what I saw of that was surprisingly good. I had heard it was lame but it was quite smart and engaging, the bits I saw at least.

Connery appeared so blase, as if he was totally tired of being Bond, James Bond.

He was. He wanted out, but was under contract for the movie. Its kind of sad because other than that all the rest of his Bond films are terrific (even Never Say Never Again, although the love story between 20 something Kim Bassinger and 60 something Sean Connery was cringy)

284 Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and they think the other person's stinks. In that vein, I offer my 2 cents. Daniel Craig is the ugliest Bond since Timothy Dalton. The only thing he has going for him are his intense blue eyes. His ears rival Dumbo's. His head looks like Stewie's on Family Guy. His forehead is borderline Neanderthal. His chin is weak. He is prematurely lined. His nose is too wide. But, the real reason he became Bond was because it followed the film maker's credo. "Hey, it's different. Therefore, it's good!' Which is why there will be a black Bond. Bank on it.

286 I've been toying with a movie thread idea for months, but I've never written it for two reasons.

1) I wasn't sure I could get enough for actual content.

2) It felt like me whining.

It's about how much I hate Fan Culture.

Well, since we were talking about Dune in the last thread, that reminded me of something I read last night.

I was surfing the web, looking for news about Dune, when I went to the Dune Reddit page. Halfway down the front page was a post by someone wondering whether he was allowed to enjoy something wonderful like Dune even though the author was an awful homophobic bigot.

I wanted to bitch slap someone right then.

Fan culture's insularity, cultishness, and inability to see film as a medium beyond their baubles has bothered me for a while, but it was this that kind of set me off.

Someone, probably new to the board, was whining that a man born about a hundred years ago did two things: wrote a great book and didn't share the poster's modern day sexual politics.

I've grown to literally hate these people. They have no sense of history, which is standard, but they also have no sense of the medium at all or art in general. And they are the ones driving conversations in popular film forums.

Ugh...rant off.

I was a proponent of Brosnan for Bond in the 80s when he was Remington Steele, but his time had passed when he actually got the role. 357 IMO, the character of James Bond doesn't really work in modern culture.

For someone like him to work, the audience needs to have trust in our governments' intelligence agencies, and an unambiguously bad guy for him to be going up against.

The left has spent the better part of the last 30 years yelling about the 'meddling' that western democracies have been doing around the world, and with Trump's election, a lot on the right are disillusioned with spy agencies as well. You don't get to root for this guy who does morally questionable things for the greater good if you don't believe that they're actually being used in the course of the greater good.

If you put James Bond in conflict with those very agencies he's supposed to be working for, you just get someone like Jason Borne, Mission Impossible, or Jack Bauer. He's not James Bond any more.

I feel your pain, have been thinking along those topics - but it's an issue that is way bigger than films. The issue is that we have no unified culture anymore, therefore we have no basis for casual conversation with those people who do not share our culture - which is a whole lot of people who live around us. Our culture has fragmented and shattered.

when you say "And they are the ones driving conversations in popular film forums." I can only reply that conversations in *Popular* forums of all kinds are no long possible on any topic - a forum must be restricted to people who share the same culture and same basic values in order for a true "conversation" to be possible.

Given these circumstances, is "democracy" a viable form of government anymore? I'm beginning to doubt it.

367 The only reason the Timothy Dalton Bond was trashed is because of that HORRIBLE semi truck "stunt" at the end.

License to Kill was more a collection of different scenes than a movie, it couldn't decide what it was going to be. Is it a Miami Vice episode? Is it a Bond film with a goofy supervillain and his coke factory? Is it an action movie with exploding trucks? Is it a romance? The beginning feels like a decent spy film then it just gets... lost.

Living Daylights was pretty solid Bond stuff, and people who don't like Dalton should watch that one. The opening sequence is one of the most tense and amazing action bits in any movie I've ever seen (it suffers a bit from editing though, where Bond is on Gibraltar varies significantly without pattern or logic)

381 #318 Bond
is supposed to be the biggest badass in the British intel community+++++++++++ To borrow on your observation, this is where the decision to cast little Tommy Cruise as Jack Reacher was such an epic failure. Reacher is depicted as being a mountain of a man, so Cruise was never believable. Only saw the first movie...had no desire to see the next. What a lost opportunity as a well-cast Jack Reacher could have been such a successful franchise. Oh well, saddest words of tongue and pen and all that, what?

One of the changes in American culture in my lifetime is the embrace of historical ignorance.

Traditionally people don't know a lot about history because they get focused on other things in their lives - but it was always considered to be something you should want to learn about.

But within the last 15 years or so I've found my urbane liberal acquaintances have switched from not knowing anything about history to actively not wanting to know anything about history and finding the study of history to be somewhat rayciss.

385 I read all the Fleming Bond books as a yout'. I knew Mom didn't know what I was reading was sort-of above Hardy Boys level...!

My recollection is that I was excited Bond was going to go to film. I recall being disappointed, and never saw a Bond movie again. Seriously.

However, quick Wiki check says the first Bond movie was Dr. No (1962), and I would have been ten. That doesn't seem possible. If I'd caught my boys reading such stuff at ten...!

I never read the books.. but I was 11 or 12 when the movies stated coming out.. me and my friends saw every one of them at the theater..

Yes.. all the fight scenes were cheesy.. with that stupid slightly sped up technique they used.. (was that Terrence Young?)

But they were sure fun to see as a kid in the theater.

386 From #343, above.

"And then I want Jussie to be added to our lexicon ... a verb that means to frame a whole class of patriotic Americans, for the purpose of self advancement. Or usage 2 maybe, for news agencies to present fake hate crimes of white patriots as truth."

To Jussie: to use race and hate and false homophobia and lies to smear those on the right, mostly as a way to elevate ones victimhood stature, or to signal virtue.

Let's see if we can get PDT to use this in multiple tweets going forward.

I don't really participate in it, and I actively try to avoid it.

But when I get exposed to it, I find the whole thing stupid beyond measure, mixed with a healthy dose of entitlement, pomposity, and shocking ignorance.

Hell, back when I was a kid and big into Star Wars, I was removed from it. I read the expanded universe on my own and watched the movies on my own. Even my friends at school didn't share this love with me, and they ribbed me for it. I've never been a part of it, and I'm very glad for that.

414 Chuck Mangione is featured a lot in King of the Hill.

He's good but he only has a few really good songs, not nearly as consistent output as Herb Alpert.

Daniel Craig after a really strong start with Casino Royale completely fell apart in the role. I get the impression he doesn't like the character or movies.

I agree, and while Casino Royale was a great movie, it didn't really feel much like a James Bond movie. Each one has been further downhill and it was a big lurch downhill with Quantum of Solace. They've finally bothered to get all the Bond pieces in place again after needlessly throwing them away, but who cares at this point? They need someone new in the role who likes the part and understands what they're making.

As much as I liked the first two Bourne films, they ruined the action/spy genre.

437 Brosnan was too wimpy ... for the character of Bond. Some real spies are probably never going to have those fight scenes ... once found out they are finished. But for the movie role, I like the stouter man with a more brutish capability.

Are there any NavySeals built like Brosnan? I'm guessing no, they are at the least much more muscular. Daniel Craig was more burtal, more "real". And with less of the cute phrasing that made much of the older Bonds seem a little silly ... which was part of the shtick then, more comedy than serious.

I guess there are companies that run tours where you travel around Scotland and they hold scotch tastings in various Scottish castles. Someday.

borrow on your observation, this is where the decision to cast little
Tommy Cruise as Jack Reacher was such an epic failure. Reacher is
depicted as being a mountain of a man, so Cruise was never believable.
Only saw the first movie...had no desire to see the next. What a lost
opportunity as a well-cast Jack Reacher could have been such a
successful franchise. Oh well, saddest words of tongue and pen and all
that, what?

Reacher is supposed to be so physically intimidating that you think ten times before starting anything with him. Do like the books though.

Straight out of the book, almost line for line.

Brosnan was too wimpy ... for the character of Bond.

That's the difference between the books and the movies. In the books he's a more realistic human being, and Brosnan pretty much walks right out of the pages.

487 Reacher is depicted as being a mountain of a man, so Cruise was never believable.

The problem is I think the only way the movie got made in the first place was because Cruise loved it and was the star. Without him as Reacher, it probably never gets made at all.

488 Jussie just might get away with this if he can get a jury to believe that all the cops in the most Irish and Democrat infested city in the world has only cops that voted for Trump.

We've seen this before; "the cops framed me". That didn't used to work until O.J. and Johnny "you must acquit cause I'm dead" Cochran.

Now it's the go to defense for a Black man accused of just about anything.

How he will explain the bros buying all that stuff and him paying them I have no idea. Your guess is as good as mine.

One thing is if the media stays behind him and doesn't mock the various defense lines (and it's looking like that's how they're gonna go) he just might get away with it.

Then too it will depend on the jury selection. That's a mixed neighborhood. At one end is the richie rich and the other end is the poorly poor so if he gets a jury of mostly middle age black women than he's golden.

The Bonds were obviously impoverished landed gentry, and Skyfall and its immediate territory were all they could hang on to after UK taxes. Besides, did Bond agree with any of the analysis that Vesper was tossing at him?

Cruise has the wrong physicality for Reacher but he has good intensity.

But fuck Jack Reacher anyway, he's the construct of a Brit pothead and about as realistic as Green Arrow.
