#62 yep by Summer 1863 the Union army was accustomed to getting their ass kicked and was looking forward to their next ass kicking.
Then came Pickett's Charge. Even there the Union came close to losing it. If Lee/ Longstreet had just a few hundred more to follow the tip of their spear... maybe even only a few dozen more...they would have carried the day. As it was the nut they needed to crack was willing to fight to the last man and they had men left when the Rebs crumbled. Posted by: torabora at February 19, 2019 07:14 PM (4A/nX) 122

'We just don't know" = it MIGHT be true.
Is was once explained to me that literally ANYTHING "might be true," and thus it's a meaningless statement. We MIGHT be visited by aliens today. The entire world as you know it MIGHT be a matrix-like computer generated virtual reality. And yes, Putin MIGHT have ordered Trump to fire Comey. It's a total crap out. That's why there are legal standards that must be met before the US government invades an individuals civil rights. Generally, that's "probable cause," but certain government actions require a showing of more or less before the government can take action. And THIS is the entire issue here with McCabe, the DOJ, the FBI and Trump. To open up a criminal investigation and to get warrants to collect evidence protected by Trumps' and other investigation targets' civil rights, the government has to show probable cause. Over on the intelligence investigation side of things, I understand the standards to be much less and much different. I believe the FBI can open a counter-intelligence "preliminary investigation" upon showing "information or an allegation," that doesn't even have to be "credible." But a "full investigation," which is the type that authorizes the use of electronic surveillance and search warrants, require "the reasonable indication of wrongdoing." A low bar, but if it fails not the "reasonableness" count, they're done. Posted by: RichardWindsor at February 19, 2019 07:21 PM (db5dt) 192

And without any actionable evidence beyond Trump has a big mouth and a twitter account! Good God, what were these FBI and DOJ bastards saying and doing when nobody was watching? This is complete bullshit. What this statement tells me is the coup is ongoing and that this is one of pretexts they were using to advance the conspiracy to take out Trump. This also has to be said. For anyone on the fence about whether the FBI and DOJ were up to no good, consider again that the same group of people at both the FBI and DOJ were working BOTH the Hillary Clinton and Trump investigations at the same time.
Think about that for a second. The FBI employees ~35,000 people. In the midst of a presidential election, BOTH presidential candidates are under investigation by the FBI. So they're telling us that in this scenario, the smart, reasonable, sensible and proper thing to do is to assign the exact same resources to both cases, which are completely different in character? The two most consequential cases in the history of FBI law enforcement that are both occurring at the same time? Then you factor in the gross, laughably unreasonable and different approaches taken to Hillary and Trump, one secret and closely held, the other with multiple documented contacts with Hillary's personal attorney, incomprehensible decisions to not look at evidence, to not record conversations, to allow direct witnesses to attend as attorneys, to allow the target to destroy evidence, McCabe, lead investigator, accepts $675,000 (via wife's supposed "Campaign) from sources connected with Hillary, the TARGET of one of his investigations), the 6-day search and clearing of the Weiner emails, the complete exoneration of Hillary Clinton and the still yet unfinished anal-probe investigation of the first order on Trump... And there are STILL players involved in this mess, including McCabe, and main stream reporters and other pundits, telling us there is nothing to see here and a media that is consciously refusing to report or investigate any of it.... It's nothing short of shocking to the core. Posted by: RichardWindsor at February 19, 2019 07:40 PM (db5dt) 315

That was another of the "what if" moments in the battle. If you ever get a chance do the full docent-led Gettysburg session. Pickett's charge, Little Round Top, and First Minnesota bridging the gap were important. But the most jarring thing might be the arrival of the Confederates and as they crest the hill, the entire Union battle line is flanked and stretched in the front of them. They couldn't get the orders issued and a huge opportunity was lost. The whole battle was as close-run a thing as exists in warfare. Even if Lee had taken Little Round Top he would have still lost the battle. Might have taken a day or two longer, but he would have still lost because there was no way he had the manpower to roll up the Union right. It simply was never going to happen.
Posted by: The Great White Scotsman Even that, it wasn't that close. There was another regiment up the hill behind Chamberlin's 20th Maine, if they would have broken, another fresh regiment would have come down to fill the gap. This wasn't actually realized until many years later, because the heroism of the 20th Maine was inspirational to the war effort. Chamberlin was awarded the CMH for his role in that battle. Pickett's charge was madness. Lee made at least two colossal blunders at Gettysburg, because he really had no idea what he should have done. Longstreet wanted the whole army to move off around the Union flank and get behind them. The whole campaign was predicated on getting between the Union Army and Washington, and making them come to fight the Confederates in a defensive position. Lee was blind because his cavalry was riding off somewhere else. They were supposed to be on Ewell's flank screening the Confederate Army from Union Cavalry but got themselves on the wrong side of the Union Army column marching north. Posted by: Jean at February 19, 2019 07:37 PM --- That is true but Lee was literally at the end of his rope both in manpower and supplies. While he could get some stuff from plundered Union supply columns, he simply did not have enough effectives to exploit any successes he may have made. And if he had won at Gettysburg there were two more Union Armies forming that he would have had to deal with in just a few weeks. Posted by: J.J. Sefton Weird western, that one... Posted by: Boswell at February 19, 2019 07:44 PM (32YRo) A Pacific Northwestern, which is unusual. I liked it, because I'm a Robert Altman fan. Julie Christie was yummy as always, and it had a Leonard Cohen soundtrack. In fact, that's where I first heard of him. Posted by: rickl at February 19, 2019 07:55 PM (sdi6R) 392

Imma say that had Lee taken Seminary Ridge on Day 1 when he had a chance, it wouldn't have been the battle of Gettysburg - the Union would have moved further North to block their advance.
Imma also say that had the Confederates taken Little Round Top, they could have won the Battle of Gettysburg because they could have then rolled up the Union flank before all the reinforcements arrived. I say could have, not definitely. Momentum is a thing - by failing to take Little Round Top, the Confederate Army started out a series of stalemates and losses that had they had the momentum going their way would have ended up differently. The new museum at Gettysburg is something else.
For weeks after the battle, people buried bodies wherever they could, many in ditches nearby. Then later for the cemetery, they went and dug those bodies up, and they had these S shaped wrought iron hooks they used to drag the bodies.... Creepy. 372 You know, that movie wasn't bad. I didn't hate it anyway. It would have improved had they gotten another actor for the lead. Warren Beatty is overrated.

McCabe needs to be tried and if found guilty; hung from the yardarm. All of them, but McCabe first and foremost. Find a taller yardarm for Comey. None of this injection, electrocution or firing squad crap, HUNG. BY. THE.NECK. UNTIL. DEAD. Hillary also, but she would likely stroke out in the courtroom, hopefully there are cameras. But that's what he should have done. Posted by: Steve Borden The goal was to be legit enough to draw GB in, they underestimated the power of the anti slavery caucus in London. And, then the sheer scale of the war scared even the militarists in Europe. So, that strategy was doomed. I think Lincoln also privately told the English, any games would cost them Canada.
