Where do we go from here?

Last week, we discussed here how Gavin Newsom planned to destroy the planet by shortening the California high-speed rail project from the big dream of a three-hour trip from LA to San Francisco to a sort of fast trip between Bakersfield and Merced. If we are not all dead in 12 years, how will we get around in the future?

The Sacramento Bee has a few corrections to the information we had last week. And the Babylon Bee reminds us that our Washington legislators remain undeterred in their Big Green Dreams:

A new environmental proposal would have the US replace all public and private spacecraft with high-speed trains by the year 2030, reports confirmed Thursday.

"We are wasting so much rocket fuel to generate the thrust necessary to leave Earth's orbit when we could just build a train track all the way to Mars or Jupiter," said a lobbyist for the train industry. "And just think about how pleasant a ride from Earth to Mars would be, coasting along the space tracks at 200 miles per hour for the next 193 years." . . .

California is ahead of the curve and has already begun work on its own high-speed space rail, but it was immediately delayed for 770 years and will now cost 52x the original estimate.

Meanwhile, back on earth, a piece in the Sacramento Bee assures us that Gavin Newsom did not kill high-speed rail. Instead, Newsom's plan is an improvement on the original plan for the Central Valley segment of high-speed rail:

Administration officials point out Newsom's plan expands the high-speed rail line by about 50 miles in the Valley. Under his revised concept, trains will run into downtown Bakersfield, rather than stopping outside the city. And Newsom plans to extend the line farther north to Merced, instead of the previous Valley terminus at Madera.

Think about that: The original plan was to have a bullet train STOP OUTSIDE THE CITY.

I saw a few more surprises in the revised map from the HSR authority:

HSR_897px_1K_map.jpg

Although the big selling point for this plan was the LA to San Francisco run, there is no future plan for high-speed rail from Los Angeles to San Francisco shown on the map. What about that ultra-expensive new terminal in San Francisco?

Also note that the current planned HSR route parallels the existing Amtrak route. There is a plan for a future "express" route to Manteca. So there's that.

We also touched on Gavin Newsom's emphasis on planning future housing in California, including planning for alternate modes of transportation like electric scooters. Here's a story about electric scooters for tourists in San Francisco, Santa Monica and elsewhere around the country. Electric scooters might make a nice replacement for high-speed rail in Frisco.

The latest way to sightsee requires an app, a sense of balance and a thumb to operate a throttle. Dockless electric scooters are a great way to explore a city, says Paul DeMaio, who manages the bike- and scooter-share programs in Arlington, Virginia. "It can be a lot of fun." In some areas the programs, which offer short-term rentals for just a few dollars, have been controversial: Parked scooters can block sidewalks, and inexperienced, unhelmeted riders have been injured. But cities have adopted regulations, and the popularity is booming.

Have you ever done this? Would you do it? More importantly, should neighborhoods be planned for electric scooter travel, as suggested in last week's commentary on Gavin Newsom's State of the State address?

I am not up to talking about autonomous "green" cars today. You can bring the topic up in the comments if you know anything new. Meanwhile, Chevy is discontinuing the Volt.

Space Travel

While politicians make plans like these, space travel using fossil fuels moves forward. Insty is always a good source for the latest in formation. I just did a search for "space" and got recent results on Virgin Galactic reaching space again, a successful launch by SpaceX, possible lunar travel, asteroids, space junk and more.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez probably does not approve.

Some Practical Green Transportation?

Insty also linked a piece on a study suggesting that electric bikes increase brain function in older adults. As long as you don't fall on your head, of course.

And here's a guy dealing with the recent effects of global warming in a creative way: a bicycle snowplow.

Looks like good exercise. I can imagine certain members of The Horde coming up with something like this.

Nice thread (on Thread Reader) concerning cheap energy, by John Hayward:

One important point to understand about the #GreenNewDeal mindset is that socialists HATE middle-class people having access to cheap energy. They really thought they were going to put a stake in the middle-class heart under Obama, who dreamed of $10/gallon gas.

When vital goods and services are cheap and readily available, people don't think an all-powerful maternal government is necessary. Attacking the American energy industry offers the Left a way to make EVERYTHING more expensive, all at once. . .

Another side effect of the war on cheap energy the Left would find very useful is reduced mobility for the American people. They HATE it when the serfs move around too much.

Highly mobile people can seek out opportunity and move out of Democrat-run hell hole districts. More expensive energy would destroy the mobility that makes rural and suburban living attractive. As you might have noticed, the Left loathes rural and suburban living.

Hope you are able to get out and about some this weekend. Have a good one.

CAFE standards and unlimited funds for mass transit, zero for personal transit. And, excessive regulations and taxes to keep fuel expensive.
Gun restrictions
Environmental laws, millions of empty, wasted acres of "government" land. And even NASA for years had as it's primary unstated mission to prevent private exploration

I have come to expect that people will shop for a diagnosis to excuse their choices. This is getting worse by the year, as no one ever got paid for treating poor choices. A "disease" model must be imposed to charge insurance companies for "care"

*****

Exactly right, CN.

I also think the drive to create a 'disease model' as yu put it, (a process I call "defining disease downward") comes from multiple sources.

e.g. Medical societies such as Amer. Heart Assoc. or Amer. Diabetes Assoc, have a vested interest in maintaining their ascendancy, to justify their existence (not to mention the fund-raising) by magnifying the impact of their pet condition. So half the population is told they have "pre"-hypertension or "pre"-diabetes. Voila, a whole new instant constituency and potential revenue stream. You're going to need confirmatory testing and ongoing monitoring (at intervals defined by what Medicare/Medicaid will reimburse) don't you know?.
Posted by: Muldoon at February 23, 2019 11:18 AM (m45I2)

Depression is the #1 mental health diagnosis given.

Why?

Because that's where the pills are.

So now you have drug pushers (people with licenses to prescribe) calling every sadness, every grief, every frustration as a diagnosis, because there's a pill for that.

I have conversations with people, and I have to all but tell them "your doctor doesn't really know what's wrong with you. He only knows what bothers him about you, and he has a pill he can give you, not so YOU can get better, but so you can stop bothering him with your problem."

Easier to say it that way, then to say "your doctor is treating you for a disease you don't have, because he's a crook and a drug pusher."

The Swedes seem to take a piss at the Norwaygians all the time, and I'm not sure what goes on there, really, but one truth that COULD be explored, if anyone cared to, is the correlation between increased socialism and decreased birth rates.

It may take longer, but the otherwise peaceful and prosperous mono-culture Euro nations have been dying from the inside out, which would explain why they are now importing swarthy types from elsewhere. But as we've seen, that causes... other problems.

So yeah, no.

I think your death will come with socialism, you just have to pick which form it takes, based on where you are located geographically, what your history was before you adopted it, and how many brown people you import, and how fast.

Every single one of the left's transportation policies is aimed at this goal.
Posted by: Tom Servo at February 23, 2019 11:49 AM (V2Yro)

Again, that's not quite right. Yes, the serfs were bound to the land (which, BTW, meant they couldn't be sold or evicted.) But the nobles' "summers in Italy" happened only on campaign. Those came much later. Mostly 18th C and later. Especially later.

The trouble with all this talk about "those terrible Middle Ages" is that it leads you, eventually, right where it led Jonah Goldberg and Kevin Williamson. Let's not go there.

Yep.

A particularly useful approach, for those who are pondering whether medication is the answer or not, is ask yourself this question: Is my "depression" a result of something happening in my life (death of loved one, difficulties at work, home, school, etc), or has it seemed to come from nowhere?

If you have a good reason to be depressed, the meds aren't going to help. You need to fix THAT, and at best the meds might make it possible for you to get out of bed in the morning, but once you do, you're going to have to fix what's wrong, because otherwise, the meds are going to get in the way, by numbing you to the real pain, which is a consequence of real events, which will be fixed, if they can be, by real work. By you. Not some pill.

125 Merced to Bakersfield is 2.5 hours by car. Less if they ever finish up widening 99 Highway (which they don't have money to finish).

Because there will be no real express trains, they will stop at least 3 to 4 times in route. That means that if each stop is 15 minutes, unless the train is traveling in excess of 140 MPH, travel time is just about equal.

Note, neither Bakersfield nor Merced have reasonable airports.. and they won't be near the train terminals.

Thus, at either end of the destination, you will either have to take a bus, or rent a car to get anywhere you really want to go.

Whole thing is stupid, and for the record? I was at my girlfriends in MERCED half an hour ago.

Collectivism is just an attempt to recreate serfdom. Russia had barely left serfdom behind, when it's intellectual class decided to depose the weak, decadent Czars who'd let it fail, and use Marxism to justify it's return.

It's always looked that way to me... the vanguard of the proleterariat was rebranded Russian state paternalism. The collective farms were rebranded blood and soil serfdom, and so on.

It's no surprise at all this shit sprang out of a traditional Russia trying and failing to lurch into modernity.

Now that I own 4X4 vehicles, mostly, I just make sure I have good winter-rated tires, and leave the chains at home. If the roads are so bad I can't travel in 4-wheel drive, I ain't going. I note that 27% of their GDP is from oil/gas exports. Pretty sweet deal. Drive a pipe into the ground, and
up come bubbling Euros, at almost no cost.

That of course still isn't enough to cover the costs. Their marginal income tax rate, while not nightmarish, is still significant. But the real kicker is is the VAT, 25%.

An interesting thing to consider is the tax/GDP ratio. Norway? Tax collections are 42% of GDP. The U.S? 26%.

Which of those suggests incentive to develop and grow?

What is even more interesting is that the aforementioned (staggering, really) 25% of GDP in oil/gas exports isn't nearly enough to help very much, they still have to tax the hell out of everything.

151 /* Practicality Rant On: Bicycle snowplow: I wonder where this guy lives or what sort of area he has to plow. I live in SE Michigan. I've got a lot of years of experience moving snow, and I would say the bike plow needs some serious validating where the snow is anything more than a couple of inches of light fluffy powder.

- Where I live we often get heavy wet snow that that my two stage snowblower can't throw it all that far. I think the front of that bicycle thing will want to slide sideways in a heavy wet snow.
- While it might work for a sidewalk, what about a driveway apron that's 25 feet across? As you push the snow sideways you push a larger and larger pile, maybe as much as a couple of feet with just a few inch snowfall. How much can this thing really push?
- Eventually the snow piles up on the sides of the driveway or sidewalk. If it does not melt between snowfalls, eventually you have to push the fresh snow and the old snowbank or the driveway gets more narrow. Many years ago I had a lawn tractor with a plow blade. I would sometimes have to ram the old snowbanks at full speed to get enough room alongside the driveway to push the fresh snow out of the way.

I ain't sayin' this guy is not inventive and I give him props for having the skills to build this. But I question it for anything but the best of conditions.

I was on Oahu from '12-'16... I had sort of mixed-ish feelings on that stupid train. One one hand, it seemed like if there was ever a good case for one it was there. Very little real estate left to build roads, traffic mostly going one way in am, one way in pm, volume increasing annually....

OTOH, of course it would be a disaster. Buying 100 modern buses (USB charging ports, or whatever people would like) for the commuters from the windward side to Honolulu would cost less and reduce traffic during rush hour. They could even run it for free for a few years and still cost less than the stupid rail.

Posted by: Calm Mentor at February 23, 2019 12:06 PM (ffYR/)

Such a device might get you unstuck, where the stuck condition is merely due to a lack of traction, and not being high-centered on a snowdrift, but that's all they are good for. I don't think it's merely accidental that the traditional steel ladder-style tire chains have been sold for nearly a century, and the cable chains for about half of that.

You read the old automotive magazines, and you will find hundreds of articles (and ads) for weird and wonderful snow traction devices that worked...until they didn't. You could even buy remote-controlled sanders to strew sand under your tires.

199 yes, pushing a lot of people onto the roads and crowded intersections can make for congestion. And while cars can handle a 5 mph bump with little or no damage, it can permanently disable a biker that was demanding his full share of the lane, doing 12 mph.

In Lake Vista, part of New Orleans where I lived for many years, they had parkways with sidewalks between all the houses, with roads on the other side. It was really nice, all utilities underground, between city park and the lake. But pushing bikes into crowded downtown areas is a whole 'nuther thang.

If I ever subdivided my little farm into one to five acre plots, I'd try to do something like that, with my own HOA where I was dictator, allowing only little turf safe golf carts along my trails. Then a food coop with our own dairy and beef, and flowers and food. A perfect world ... deplorables only.

But trying to do any such dreamy thing to a big crowded city would start with a dictator promising Utopia, and end in disaster. Making energy too expensive for the commoner is a bad way to "make life better", and indeed is really just a sneaky means of control. Too bad the commies co-opted the environmental movement. They ruin everything.

The core purpose of the train was to urbanize the comparatively conservative Central Valley and get everyone hooked on sweet, sweet government jobs and money. That's really all.

And I'll say it again - the sweet spot for rail as seen everywhere in the world including the US where it works is up to about 200 miles. This is true all over Europe, and everywhere there's actual airports. No one was ever going to ride the thing SF-LA unless they had baggage the airlines couldn't accommodate.

If the CA HSR project was serious about a Frisco-LA high speed link, they would have planned the route along the I5 corridor. It already has the right-of-way, it's damned near desolate for it's entire length, and since the freeway is already built, the environmental impact is nil.

The problem is, that the HSR was never meant to be a Frisco-LA link, it was designed as a transportation subsidy for Frisco yuppies to be able to move into the Valley where they can actually buy a big house for less than it would cost to buy a closet-sized condo in the city.

230 The Amy Klobuchar ate salad with a comb story has been reported by the NYT.
One of her aides forgot to bring Amy's special fork to a flight she was taking, so Amy, unfazed, promptly dug into her purse, removed her hair comb and ate the salad with that implement.
When finished, she directed the staffer to clean the comb.

240 If the CA HSR project was serious about a Frisco-LA high speed link, they would have planned the route along the I5 corridor. It already has the right-of-way, it's damned near desolate for it's entire length, and since the freeway is already built, the environmental impact is nil.

But no one is going to ride it SF-LA, very few at least. Even as a straight shot you have several problems, the Central Valley is in fact a valley and getting out to the coast means you either bore out a 40-mile tunnel somewhere between Salinas and Livermore or you go up, over, and around through one of the few significant passes which slows everything down.

You have the same issue at the south end, a train isn't gonna climb the Grapevine so you either go over slowly, go east through the desert, or have one of those through-the-Alps kind of tunnel projects that costs ten billion in Italy and ten times that here.

Back in the day Dianne Feinstein and Quentin Kopp were the yin-and-yang of SF governance, she was the center-left and he was the center-right and you had cranks and crackpots all around them. We know what happened to Feinstein. Kopp got himself a sinecure as a judge in San Mateo County, which was all well and good, but then he got sold the HSR and climbed on board a little too thoroughly, and now he's gonna have that asterisk on his reputation.

The problem is, that the HSR was never meant to be a Frisco-LA link, it was designed as a transportation subsidy for Frisco yuppies to be able to move into the Valley where they can actually buy a big house for less than it would cost to buy a closet-sized condo in the city.

Scooters. Stipulated: about 90% of all laws and regulations regarding small consumer matters (at least in CA) could probably be ended this afternoon, with ZERO net negative impact on anyone. Ditto for firearms, many other things, obviously.

But at least in high pedestrian traffic tourist areas, there ought to be at least *speed limits* built into the damn things. Cannot believe the data don't already show measurable effect of scooter accidents. It's not just inexperience, lack of coordination, judgement, etc (though those are factors) - the things are just capable of significant speeds ..... and like skateboards cannot stop quickly, without the rider continuing his motion until coming to rest (injured, in a heap).

Already avoiding certain places because of them. Idiots go flying past standing/meandering pedestrians (and little kids) at 20 MPH. It's ridiculous.

296 I had a leftist friend defend trains by saying that we pay constantly for highways to keep going too, they are an ongoing tax expense.

And he's right, they are. Not remotely as much as trains, but a regular expense to maintain and upgrade. The big difference is that highways are open and free areas which people can use as they desire. Trains are fixed and limited areas that only go where you are taken. Highways are simply a response to what people were already doing, how they choose to do it. Trains are a top-down imposition of movement and travel, at their schedule.

Yeah, but...consider distances. SF-LA is ~450 miles.

That's on par with London-Edinburgh or Munich-Brussels and I'm betting a whole lot more folks fly those routes than take the train.

London-Paris through the tunnel is 250 miles, London-Bristol is 120 miles,

True but California is a decent analogy for Europe say, Austria to the tip of Italy or London to Marsailles. Its just not worth it to put trains into the USA because the expense is huge (and ongoing) and the return very small.

328 One of the things that caught my eye last week about high speed rail was that the only two profitable runs (Spain and Japan, I think) were runs where the corresponding highways required tolls of about eighty dollars.

Posted by: KTbarthedoor at February 23, 2019 01:26 PM (BVQ+1)

329 Highways, and railways both take up large swathes of land, and remove it from agricultural production, and by bisecting farms, hinder the productivity of adjoining land. And both have "maintenance of way" as an ongoing expense.

Air travel has no "maintenance of way" issues at all, and the relatively small amount of land occupied by airports usually enhances the value of surrounding lands for industrial parks, hotels, restaurants, etc.

And any decent international airport probably has more passenger throughput than any station on Cali's proposed high speed rail ever would.

368 Leroy Schumacher, grandfather of 17-year-old Jacob Redfearn, believes the death of Redfearn was unjustified because the homeowner's AR-15 gave him an unfair advantage over the three burglars.

That's my guess. "Grandfather" is almost certainly mom's dad, not dad's dad.

Also, "unfair advantage over the three burglars."

So, in a fair fight, one of the three burglars would have switched sides to make it two-on-two?

A North Carolina judge has voided constitutional amendments approved by voters in November requiring photo identification to vote in person and capping the state income tax rate.

The judge sided Friday with the state NAACP, which argued last year's edition of the General Assembly that voted to put amendments to the North Carolina Constitution on the ballot was illegally constituted due to racially gerrymandered districts.

Space Travel

Although they promote global hotting and have a lot of anti-Trump comments and lean Left, I find that Ars Technica has very solid regular reporting on current space news. They follow all the major and most minor space companies, their acquisition of manufacturing/launch facilities, their current and upcoming rocket designs. They have a weekly space thread on the latest news and scheduled launches for the week. For major launches like Falcon Heavy or other notable launches, they host a livestream. As media outlet, they are clearly determined to keep up with space news and provide enough space content to keep their nerd readers happy and not needing to look for space news elsewhere. If you like space news, it's a good site to follow. They also do well with archeology news.

This three is already dead, but I'll say this: This boondoggle project is why we should all be thankful Trump was stopped from using those elaborate Wall prototype designs. And instead had to go with a beefed up version of existing steel wall designs. Going with those massive concrete structures would've taken forever to build in places that barely have road access and looked to me to be 5-10 times more expensive that the prefabbed, all-steel, walls. It'd be the year 2030 by the time the project was finished, if it hadn't been cancelled by a future administration. I've noticed that it cost $3.6 million per mile to build the steel slats in the NM desert while the concrete levee with bollards on top is running $24 million per mile.
