I just had a touch of irony. I am paying my taxes and preparing the envelopes to mail in the checks. My "Forever" stamps I am using read "Equality" and "Freedom."

Might can make an argument for "Freedom," but my swinging tax bill is *not* freeing - especially as most of it goes to stuff that is arrayed against me. "Equality," though, in a progressive tax regime, is absolutely not applicable.

Ugh. Glad it's over with.

Here's your theological info from the agnostic. Protestants* don't have saints because Protestantism isn't an intercessional faith, it's based on the direct communication between the faithful and God. Catholics have saints and priests as intermediaries to God. Of Luther's 95 theses this is arguably the most important.

*(Anglicans, Episcopalians, and other branches of the Henry VII School of Fuck You Rome may or may not count as Protestant)

84 Not so nice news story from JJ's thread, concerning abortion. It seems Catholic bishops in Texas are offering to provide free funerals for "fetal remains", after abortions.

So they got sued by an abortion "chain", called Whole Womens Heath (whose mission is "to provide fabulous abortion care", no shit). And in discovery the abortion mill wanted to see all the email conversations from/to the bishops concerning this offer, with (what the courts thought was) the goal of retaliating socially against anyone funding this offer.

This is from Yahoo answers. I sent to wedding at a church that had these but I can find it using Bing maps.

Protestant
bodies such as the Anglicans, Lutherans, and a few others recognize
some saints common to Catholicism and Orthodoxy as being prominent Christians but have none of their own. As a sort of
lowest-common-denominator concept of what a saint is, they contend that
all believers are saints.

107 94 @12 and @70, I make more money now, so maybe the calculus would be different, but once I bought a house in Texas, I paid about five times as much in property tax as I did in Oklahoma, which more than offset the income tax. It was better when I rented an apartment, but property taxes are killer.
Posted by: sunny-dee at February 20, 2019 09:50 AM (QAOZh)

Yeah, usually property taxes (local taxes) are higher in states with no income tax.

So depending on your income, and where in the state you live, you might not see any savings.

When I moved to NH, by property taxes remained about the same (but I got way more house for the money) from a high tax state, but I no longer had income tax or sales tax, plus everything else from car registration to insurance to food to... you name it is cheaper.

So I'm definitely saving money.

But if you have a fairly low income in Maine (a state with a modest income tax), for example, you're probably better off staying there with the low property taxes then moving to NH.

Oklahoma to Texas, not so much. The housing prices are way out of whack (no joke, at least double), with significantly higher property taxes. So I get less house, but pay more for it! And my property taxes have gone up 70% in the 5 years I've owned my house, so that's nice.

Although, between you and me, Texas is kind of a joke. It's California Soyboy but thinks it's all John Wayne.

124 This is a hugely evocative painting. The simple colors provide a unifying aspect and doesn't distract from the face of St. Joseph. His clothing is simple with just a hint of detail. His contemplative glance engages the viewer's imagination. What is he looking at? Is it a revalation that causes his hand to move in surprise? Looking at his face, worn with age and care but beautiful in the lighted details, makes me wonder what has gone on in his life.

The one odd note is the hand. It reminds me of the stronger colors and slightly exaggerated roughness of an El Greco.

I said the painting is evocative; it is also beautiful in its way.

184 I recently bought a book named 1777 by a man named - I'm not kidding - Pancake.

I read part of it standing in front the shelf at the library and didn't even check it out. I just went home and bought it. I can't tell you much more than that, though, because I have such a backlog of books to get through.

Which is a good problem to have.

Excellent efx and action. Great acting, even by CGI(!)
Crisp directing and tight script.

Bonus! Appealing lead!

Alita is the anti-Captain Marvel.

Story is both an origin story and a rift on "The Empire Strikes Back"-sort of dealio.

They found almost 4000, and the US was lower per capita than many "safe" European countries, and ranked far down the list.

Speaking of which, I saw something terrifying. The Duke vs. South Carolina game - this a regular season college basketball game - has blown up in price. To get in the door, you're looking at $2,600 a seat minimum. For a college basketball game. That's more than Super Bowl.

Unreal. I have no idea what's going on, but this is clearly a "go to the game for the purpose of being seen at the game" and not a "go to the game for the purpose of watching the contest" scenario.

True times change but humans don't and I think that dynamic rings true for us. My daughter is the anxious type and the nuns at her school have such a lot of rules and are SO strict with the girls she basically always feels like she's somehow "breaking a rule" she doesn't even know about! her stress levels are thru the roof. And with no boys around to break up the drama things can get REALLY weird there.

Am hoping boys schools aren't as bad, but even there you probably see an escalation of "boyness" without the mitigating factor of girls around? but maybe that's a good dynamic!

Counter factuals are 30% of the Internet!

But yeah, I really wouldn't be surprised if Cameron had delayed Avatar a full year because he didn't think the digital hair felt right enough.

I heard a talk from one of his visual effects producers on Titanic. She worked 100 hour weeks during the movie's post-production process and saw pieces of everything coming together. She told one story:

They needed a sound effect for a helicopter flying, so the sound guys got a helicopter, hovered it over land, captured the sound, and brought it to the booth. When they played it, Cameron stopped them.

"Did you get that sound with the helicopter over land?"

"Yes."

"You have to do it over water."

Sound guy leans over to someone and asks, "Can he tell the difference between salt water and fresh water?"

the usual leftist media suspects "pounced on" the number 3000 ... somehow.

Gang member age up to 19 included ... that is probably 3000/year. Loaded guns left "laying around" by parents is probably under 100. Which is basically zero, especially considering the very real "lives saved" by having a gun in the home.

Lives are saved not just when a gun is in hand to deter an attack, but all the attacks deterred by the laws allowing a lot of guns, so criminals are less likely to try their luck.

Approximately.

American Academy of Pediatrics 10-year-old position paper on Firearm safety reports 2,966 firearms related deaths in individuals 0 to 19 years old. This number includes homicides, suicides, law-enforcement encounters and accidental discharge. They just happen to gloss over the inconvenient fact that the vast majority of this total number is in the 17-19 year.old age group. For the babies, of course. (Babies evoke more sympathy than gang-bangers for some reason.)

This is also 10-year-old data.

The earliest version of that storyline that I can think of is that of Ruth and Boaz in the Book of Ruth (with Naomi as the yentl, the Jewish mother in law who sets it all up) Ruth and Boaz are later included in the genealogy of Jesus himself, which is interesting, since Ruth was by birth a Moabite, not a Jew.

Biology aside, it was Joseph who would be answering the young boy's constant questions, Joseph who showed Jesus around the temple when Jesus was twelve, Joseph who introduced Jesus into the father-son relationship that became the very basis of Jesus' teaching. We don't have much of Joseph in the Gospels, but we see him reflected in the son he raised.

Anywho, would she simply have gotten the gear and listed for instructions without broadcasting?

Parts of Trisha Anderson's, the number 2 lawyer at the FBI, testimony to Congress came out last night. In it she confirmed that it was about a dozen people who did both investigations.

That was kind of the whole point. Nothing about these investigations was normal, starting with the fact that they were run from FBI HQ instead of a field office, and they needed to keep the group small and contained if they had any hope of keeping what they were doing secret.

Posted by: Cuthbert the Witless
--------

It isn't the wavelength that is critical, it is the allotment of sundry bands of frequencies available to amateurs (they are regulated), the power that may legally used, and the mode of communication.

Second question, amateur radio is almost entirely self-policed. People operate illegally from time-to-time, but amateurs generally have a nose for detecting illegal operators, and will undertake to shut them down.

I am aware of one case where my buddies located the illegal user and conducted the sheriff's department to the guys house. It's a Federal bust, so, somewhat serious.

I guess the HAM hall monitors' reputation proceeds them.

It means that officers, and local government officials who seize somebody's car - because they were soliciting for prostitutes in it - can be personally sued under 42 U.S. Code 1983, and can potentially be arrested for violating 18 U.S. Code 242 (deprivation of Constitutional rights under color of law).

But even if you no longer have to get a license for CB, you are still not allowed to operate with more than 5 watts, which normally doesn't get out very far.

But I know a dude who put CB frequency crystals in a 70 watt ham transmitter and was blaring away. If they had caught him he probably would have been heavily shat upon.

This is a very important note, especially to those of you interested in grabbing certain types of radio equipment - a lot of the less expensive chinese made radios on the market have a wide (read: not FCC approved) range of capabilities in terms of the bands they can operate in, and it is very easy to end up using parts of the spectrum you're not allowed to be in - either on that equipment, or at all...
The HAM community is probably the single worst example of hall monitor syndrome that I have *ever* encountered in the US. It's like, not even close. Take the socially awkward basement shut-in aspects of hacker culture, but then filter it through the sorts of weird old guy kind of people who do things like obsess over trains and old school tech, then toss in a big dose of "look at me, I'm a volunteer firefighter who drives an ex-police Crown Vic with a red lightbar on top"...
The worst examples spend half their free time splitting between trying to narc on illegal broadcasters and squatting on forums spazzing out about how this that and everything is unlawful. It's virtually impossible for a newbie to show up and ask questions about modern radio equipment without one of these weirdos showing up and doing the "but, ackshually..." routine. Every fucking time...
It's a perfect case study in how the .gov reinforced the behavior of a freaky subset of a community and forged it into an enforcement tool.

Which means exactly nothing, because you can just transmit a burst from a different location each time with $50 of equipment powered off a 12v socket in a car. The HAM hall monitors aren't going to catch a damn thing in that case, if they notice at all.

The .gov might, if they have reason to think you're going to be transmitting in a certain area in the future, and are willing to throw money and manpower at it.
If you want to lob a bit of data anonymously and very much on the cheap and aren't an IT nut, HAM is the easy way to do it.
