I don't understand this tip -- are they saying these guys actually attacked Smollet, or that they participated in a staged attack they arranged with Smollet earlier?
I'm baffled. I don't know what this means. We also don't know any of this is true; this account says it's just an unconfirmed tip. Let's get this version clear.
1 - Jussie and a few of his homeys decide to get him some anti-MAGA luv and stage a fake race crime on him.

Chicago was arguably the earliest and quickest "big American city" to jump on the CCTV bandwagon. It's not just the city owned cameras, but the network of private property cameras that can and will be easily accessed for major crimes and terrorism investigations.
Honestly? I don't think this was a bad Grindr hookup or drug deal gone wrong. I think it was a straight up, lame ass hoax, and these guys both: a) grossly underestimated the strength of the surveillance state throughout most of Chicago; b) overestimated how much the intersectional resistance people would be able to hand wave away any suspicions of a hoax.
Say what you will about the Chicago PD, and how racist or politically corrupt they may or may not be, but one things for certain: there are lots of guys and gals who wear the uniform who take it very, very personally when you try to pull one over on them.

If you cook the sauce down long enough the natural sugar comes out and concentrates. Hence you do not need to add sugar if you are making sauce from scratch and doing it slowly on a low fire.

So he first sends a "threatening letter" to himself with cut-out letters that he thinks will look like it came from racist Trump supporters (who happen to follow the career of one Jussie Smolett). Then he brainstorms with some buddies about what these racist Trump supporters, who are now stalking him, would do to him if they were to catch him. Well, they'd certainly beat him, they'd threaten to hang him with a noose they're carrying, they'd threaten to bleach his already light skin (which he just happens to be self-conscious of when around other darker-skin blacks), they'd call him a f-g (since they know exactly who he his, being super famous and all), and they would declare ultra-liberal Chicago "MAGA country" (thinking that Trump supporters commonly use the adjective "MAGA" with things other than a hat).
So they wait after the letter arrives for a moment when no one is guaranteed to be on the street, and it comes a week later in the form of 2 AM on the coldest night of the year. They stage the fake attack near his house, and he makes sure his agent is on the phone while it is happening to hear what the "attackers" are saying. The agent might not necessarily have even been in on the hoax to start with. However, he never thinks to lose the sandwich that he went out to buy as a pretense for the "attack".

Yep, I think you got it. Another thing he forget - that the police actually aren't always complete idiots, that there really are surveillance cameras in the area, and that your cell phone records will tell a whole hell lot more about what you've been up to than you realize they will.
Only someone in the acting biz could be stupid enough to think they could pull this off. Any real street thug could have done 10 times as good a job on it than this.
We kept forgetting about the "threatening letter" which showed up weeks before the "random" attack. I think that's going to end up being the "tell" that blew the whole thing wide open.

You can also let the sauce burn a bit/caramelize as it cooks down and then scrape the bottom and stir into the sauce.

Either way, these days they actually investigate this stuff. Used to be they'd take the word of the "victim" and the "unknown" perpetrators were assumed gone. Now they get serious about it. I supposed that's a good thing but it sure is annoying cause the perception is still out there cause it's been in the news for a week while the arrest of these two will be noted in passing and we'll not hear a thing about it and the two who helped out will probably get community service and the fake victim smirks and says "I was trying to alert the people about all the racism"

Again, Chicago may be a one party city, but there's a ton of factions, and this is during a hotly contested mayoral election year. There are plenty of folks who'd love to see this blown wide open if it truly is a hoax. Doubly so, if there's any hint of a coverup that can be used against current superintendents.
Don't forget that there's a fair amount of tension between the gay and black communities throughout Chicago.
Lots of folks on the south side -- old school black political machine folks -- aren't too happy about this many resources being spent on a fake hate crime against some barely famous television queer who wasn't born or raised in Chicago.

Leftists whose entire social status revolve around their victimhood are constantly vying among their peers for position. They have no compunction about lying to give themselves a boost. But what will make any claim to status REALLY POP is a big splashy police investigation!
I honestly think that's all there is to it. Groups of idiots like this are constantly lying to each other as part of their power struggle. Actually physically perpetuating a hate crime fraud after telling a thousand little and big lies like that is a small step.

If I've learned anything from Law and Order, then it's knowing there's a huge difference between evidence used for investigation, and evidence necessary for prosecution in court, and those two things are often quite different.
