13 Everyone seen the short video of a dude riding an elephant through some tall grass and all of a sudden a tiger appears out of nowhere, jumps up and the video cuts out as you basically see the tiger's face right up in the camera?

Freaky how close those animals can get to you without knowing. My coworker went on a safari for his honeymoon and he talked about how crazy it was that the lions and other big cats just seemed to appear out of nowhere.

14 That's bad news for the scout and his miniature friend on a miniature horse.

I wonder if miniature people have sources for miniature horses that the rest of us don't know.

Also, it looks like Rousseau has never seen a tiger in real life.

I think Mueller's report is going to be a smear job fraught with innuendo and assertion and speculation but without the goods. It will be politically very damaging and will provide the house with a pretext to impeach because of how "bad" P45 is, but I think it's gonna come up nada on criminality.

I got a major linguistic breakthrough with this. (Not this limerick, this concept).

I used to see ads for a NYC restaurant called Il Gatto Pardo with a picture of a cheetah. I know that gatto is cat, so I figured that this meant spotted cat and then I realized that leopard is Leo Pard, the spotted lion.

Just thought I'd share.

Of course, they will amount to, "Trump shouldn't have hired Paul Manafort because he's slimy," but it'll be enough for Democrats to impeach anyway because their base and money demand it.

63 Soros said:

I want to use my time tonight to warn the world about an unprecedented danger that's threatening the very survival of open societies.

..

Tonight I want to call attention to the mortal danger facing open societies from the instruments of control that machine learning and artificial intelligence can put in the hands of repressive regimes. I'll focus on China, where Xi Jinping wants a one-party state to reign supreme.

A lot of things have happened since last year and I've learned a lot about the shape that totalitarian control is going to take in China.

..

All the rapidly expanding information available about a person is going to be consolidated in a centralized database to create a "social credit system." Based on that data, people will be evaluated by algorithms that will determine whether they pose a threat to the one-party state. People will then be treated accordingly.

The social credit system is not yet fully operational, but it's clear where it's heading. It will subordinate the fate of the individual to the interests of the one-party state in ways unprecedented in history.

I find the social credit system frightening and abhorrent. Unfortunately, some Chinese find it rather attractive because it provides information and services that aren't currently available and can also protect law-abiding citizens against enemies of the state.

China isn't the only authoritarian regime in the world, but it's undoubtedly the wealthiest, strongest and most developed in machine learning and artificial intelligence. This makes Xi Jinping the most dangerous opponent of those who believe in the concept of open society. But Xi isn't alone. Authoritarian regimes are proliferating all over the world and if they succeed, they will become totalitarian.

---

.. There was a report the other day about a Chinese app that will tell you if you are near somebody of low social credit.
What's different about the 21th Century is that you don't have to wear a "star of David" to be discriminated against.
Most Chinese cities now have cameras with facial recognition running 24/7. While it isn't perfect, it's nearly impossible for a Western to hide there.

77 I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, it looks like some cheesy graphic art logo. Ie. more of an eye catching logo than art. On the other hand, when you enlarge it, the three central figures are all creatively grotesque, and I like that. They seem to be balanced precariously on the grass rather than being on the ground, which is another odd effect I like.

The money did not belong to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

It belonged to the legitimate government of Iran.

Iran does not currently have a legitimate government, so it was being held in trust until such a government existed.

Obama betrayed the Iranian people by giving their treasure to their oppressors.

81 Best explanation ever.

So my house was broken into yesterday while I was at work. Don't worry, everyone is ok.

Fortunately, the alarm told me and I contacted the police. They apprehended a man with his 10 yr old daughter ransacking the house.

The bad news is, my neighbors took a vote and decided the girl was innocent and was only there because her dad brought her.

Now, I have to give her a room, feed her and pay for her to go to school.

Worse yet, since she would be abandoned if her dad goes to jail, he's been found innocent and I have to let him stay with the girl and feed him too.

If you think this is unfair, then you understand DACA.

119 Soros went on to sharply criticize the "debt trap diplomacy" of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI):

It was designed to promote the interests of China, not the interests of the recipient countries; its ambitious infrastructure projects were mainly financed by loans, not by grants, and foreign officials were often bribed to accept them. Many of these projects proved to be uneconomic.

---

I consider BRI to be hegemony thru infrastructure.
There was a report (discredited I think, but instructive none the less) about an African country (Kenya?) losing control of their port to the Chinese over debt.

Bullshit. Socialism - like all revolutionary utopian philosophies - depends on the perfectibility of man. Whether you think the end state is moral or not (I think it is not), it still depends on remaking man as a perfect creature. Therefore, it is impossible even if it is desireable.

Judeo-Christian civilization acknowledges the imperfection (and imperfectibility) of man, and our better political systems largely come out of that knowledge - which makes them workable and robust.

Socialism and its ilk are aberrant, impossible, immoral and dangerous. Putting the "right" person in charge will not change that.

It does fill in a lot of blanks.

Like how all through the year the news is full of reports of poor fundraising by the party, excessive debt.
But come November, they've outspent the republican in every single race.
Their absolute suicidal devotion to opposing the wall.

And let's not forget the owner of the New York Times is a wholly owned subsidiary of the cartels.

And make no mistake-- that money, if true, is flowing to Republicans as well.

Posted by: Can't resist temptation at January 29, 2019 10:00 AM (VeUrT)

What their pea brains can't comprehend is that it can't be done right. Every socialist government eventually decides that wealth redistribution is the ticket to their Earthly Paradise. When a government gives itself power over all wealth in an economy, it becomes an aristocracy, literally a small group that controls all of the wealth.

Creating an aristocracy in the name of material equality is an irreparable, contradictory, self-destruvtive act. Once that aristocracy exists, it behaves as any other, feathering its own nest, expanding its reach, solidifying its powers, and punishing its critics.

The system is broken as designed, and they are cultists treating it as an invincible dogma.

227 Best explanation ever.

I think the appeal is in security and risk. Socialism promises low-risk security to most, because decisions are shunted off on the technocratic core. Material comfort and no hard decisions.

It's a fiction, but I suspect that it is the appeal. I'm an older Millenial and a big chunk of my generation was raised in a *very* sheltered way. I suspect the appeal is in risk minimization blended with material comfort that socialism lies about being able to deliver.

Which means this is based on the book Black Dahlia Avenger by Steve Hodel, who has advanced the theory that his father, Dr George Hodel, killed Elizabeth Short.

So I think the "reveal" will be that the mysterious girl Pine hooks up with will turn out to be the Dahlia's daughter. *spit*

Eh, it's Gateway Pundit, he's been demonstrated to be largely full of s**t. Besides, if anyone is bankrolling Team Donk it's the Chinese...

One of the interesting things that has come from the El Chapo trial is the enormous amount of bribery that he engaged in with the Mexican government and military at multiple levels. The former Mexican president was accused of taking a $100 million bribe.

With that kind of money flowing around I would be surprised if some of it didn't make it's way north of the border.

284 The bad news is, my neighbors took a vote and decided the girl was innocent and was only there because her dad brought her.

An interesting Evil Lives Here was on ID the other night. A daughter of Ervil LeBaron was featured. Ervil was a self-proclaimed prophet of a Mormon polygamist splinter group who raised his many children in complete isolation so she, and the others, believed all the whackadoodle. One of their beliefs was in blood atonement. Yeah, Jesus died for your sins but some sins are so bad it takes more. It takes blood atonement. If you are one of the particularly bad, you'll burn in Hell for eternity unless one of the anointed kills you in which case you're Heaven bound. So you're really doing them a favor by sending them to .45 Heaven. Well, that's all well and good until Ervil kicks the bucket and a power struggle doctrinal disagreement about which of the prophets many sons becomes the new prophet and that creates a huge demand for the helping hand of blood atonement. This girl, age 15, is a true believer even if she does take a quick peek at Gilligan's Island every now and then against the rules, so when one of her favorite brothers, who is also very young, is assigned to help a heretic into Heaven and is reluctant to do so, she convinces him to do it because, dog gone it!, it's the right thing to do plus if he doesn't, he'll get the helping hand. So he kills the target but also accidentally kills a small child and is consumed with guilt. Soon it's her turn to grease the skids for an heretic uncle. She appears at his door but he is kind to her and she can't do it. Now she's convinced she'll burn in Hell and stands a good chance of a high velocity stairway to Heaven herself. Eventually, her guilt-stricken brother convinces her that dad wasn't all that much of a prophet and she goes to the police.

She was just born under a bad sign.

There's also this - people want religion, they're born with that hole in our hearts, thinking their must be something bigger, grander, nobler that we can dedicate our lives to.

Having worked hard to do away with the Judeo-Christian ethic that was responsible for the creation and growth of Western Civilization hasn't ended that drive - but it's left it nowhere to go save for the Cult of the State. And of course there are no lack of would-be High Priests who love to see followers flock to them, eager to follow anything they say without question.

346 O/T - so I taped (but haven't watched) the first episode of I Am The Night, with Chris Pine. I see from a bit of info that he plays a reporter who hooks up with a mysterious girl surnamed "Hodel" who has come to LA to find out who she really is.

*spit*

Not a particularly original idea, but I think between these two comments, you have the explanation for the fact that socialism appeals to both ends of the economic spectrum but no such to the middle. The "FSA" flavor is a response to a background of extreme need and the "share with me" flavor comes from a background of having been handed everything without working for it.

This has to be the case because there are so many freaking libs. Sure most come from libs and the dreaded moderates. But conservatives always talk about the liberal kids and family members.
I just wonder what the kids were taught growing up. I wonder how conservatism, patriotism, etc was presented. In my family, there was all types of rebellion, but not as far as becoming a lib.

Sad truth is, there has always been a large portion of humanity that prefers slavery, because it's easy and it doesn't take any effort. (Other than having to make a show of doing what you're told to do while Massa is watching)

Free societies with an independent citizenry appear to be rare blips that emerge every few centuries in rare societies that have very high senses of individuality, duty, and honor. But they never last for more than a few generations before regressing to the mean.

I understand monarchy now, I didn't used to. It's a step up from pure dictatorship by force only, which is the default model. (and what dying societies always fall into, see NK, Venezuela, Syria) In fact, a society can fall even further than that - see Libya or Afghanistan, which might as well be called MadMaxistan these days.

427 This learn to code thing is funny to me because coding in and of itself is not that hard, nor that lucrative. Anyone can learn to "code". What not everyone can do is learn to integrate systems, learn to elicit requirements from clients, learn to communicate with end users and understand their needs, figure out big picture stuff, and most importantly do the business side of tech. That's where the money is.

On the hierarchy of IT, coding is pretty low down on the totem pole. You'll have a few super star programmers/developers in an organization. But other than that, it's not all that glamorous.

Yep, that too.

It's like when people say CA is the 5th largest economy. Yeah great, an economy that has someone else (fed govt) paying for your defense, airports, infrastructure, etc.

I'm the youngest of two. Older sister. Father was very conservative; mother was go-along-to-get-along. Sister definitely rebelled when she left for college. She worked in public education until she got fed up with the BS and has been moving rightward since. I started and remained conservative.

It was comical when Macron started to talk about how the EU needed its own army. Only took a couple of days before that idea got laughed down. What would they have, Spanish Generals, French Troops, and Italian Equipment?

five of us, then two more after i went to college. one brother (among the five), so i watched a lot of love boat growing up.

this conversation once actually happened when i came home from college:

dad: you tell your sister! she needs to vote for one of the major parties instead of throwing her vote away.
me: oh? who did you vote for?
sister: i voted communist.
dad: see! see!
me: but, dad, i voted libertarian!

that sister is older. then me, another sister, the brother, and the remaining sisters. older sister leftie. me rightie. penultimate younger sister totally whacky (claims to be a pagan, started a pagan church, managed to get herself voted out of her own church). rest of them middling.

The real test of strength will be Greece or Italy returning to the Drachma or Lira and inflating themselves into independence. This is easier for Greece to do than Italy. Painful at first, but within two years their people will be in charge of their own country. Those Germans won't stop taking vacations in Greece.

I never liked the whole scheme. Sure I get they were trying to prevent a WW1 type situation and some integration is good I guess. But the modern push for a United States of Europe was always a power play by France and Germany. They wanted to punch above their weight and go toe to toe with the dreaded Yanquis. They never cared about Italy and certainly not about Greece. It amazes me how countries can sell their independence so cheap.

Okay, now that's a funny story! And I thought my sister was something. Actually she's conservative, well spoken, intelligent - she's just lived a life that should end up on the Hallmark channel, including at one point being on the run from a murderous and insane soon to be ex-husband, in a stolen corvette, while the IRS was also chasing her for a $700,000 tax lien. That's what ya call being on the lam.

By the way, she's back on top again. soon to be 5th husband owns about 20 large apartment buildings in Phoenix. I gotta get her to let me write it up, sell it to Hallmark.
