J/K On the market for a new home? This one comes with a hefty discount. This week, a homeowner in Alberta, Canada announced she’d sell her home, worth an estimated $1.7 million, in exchange for a $19 USD entry fee and a letter, explaining why they deserve it. Despite the 5000-square foot home’s wine cellar, library, chef’s kitchen, and lake-side view, Alla Wagner, the homeowner in question, has had trouble selling the property, citing Alberta’s unsettled real estate market. In a Facebook post, she described her health as the motivation for ultimately needing to sell it. For the fans of Valentine's Day I have some bad news for you. Sweetheart candies are not available this year. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. That adage may be put to the test this Valentine’s Day, when consumers realize the popular Sweethearts candy — you know, the little sugar hearts with messages such as “Kiss Me” and “Be Mine” — won’t be on store shelves. New England Confectionery Company — or Necco — made the conversation hearts, which have been a staple of Valentine’s Day gifts for decades. But Necco had a tumultuous 2018, abruptly shutting down in July after an investment firm bought it from a bankruptcy auction. It got new life when it was subsequently bought by Spangler Candy Co. in September, but by then it was apparently too late to restart production and distribution in time for Valentine’s Day. ![]() They say necessity is the mother of invention, but when said necessity involves winning an arms race and avoiding nuclear catastrophe, you can count on the birth of way too many inventions! The cause may be dental care. If you bled when you brushed your teeth this morning, you might want to get that seen to. We may finally have found the long-elusive cause of Alzheimer’s disease: Porphyromonas gingivalis, the key bacteria in chronic gum disease. That’s bad, as gum disease affects around a third of all people. But the good news is that a drug that blocks the main toxins of P. gingivalis is entering major clinical trials this year, and research published today shows it might stop and even reverse Alzheimer’s. There could even be a vaccine. Alzheimer’s is one of the biggest mysteries in medicine. As populations have aged, dementia has skyrocketed to become the fifth biggest cause of death worldwide. Alzheimer’s constitutes some 70 per cent of these cases and yet, we don’t know what causes it. Barbasol, shave like a man. Playing with one's self can lead to blindness. Thank you Mis Hum. Liked that joke.
I hope this ONT ends up better than last night. Gonna be harsh here, so if you're sensitive, scroll on by. One person in particular reminded me of "Stuck On Stupid". Their shtick is similar, except this one just rolls it out *one night only* from time to time, then disappears while SOS did it all every day for like 3 weeks. Didn't buy SOS's stuff after about a week and I don't buy any of this stuff either. (At least SOS was interesting. TP is an attention whore.) How does one go from "I'm a good girl I am", taking their church clothes on a trip to Europe so they can go to Mass (while visiting a man they have never met), to *new guy*, to "Mommy found my sexy lingerie" to "He hasn't texted me in 12 hours!!!!" (over and over and over again) to "I got boudoir shots taken and btw our sex life sux" in 2 years time and think no body here is gonna notice that you are either a fraud or bat$#!t crazy. I can understand why some folks may find it amusing, but I never have been so glad to see a thread stomped. Tickled Pink is a weirdo. What kind exactly, I do not know. But for sure, weirdo. Been waiting to get this off my chest for a while, but didn't want to offend anyone since so many are always "Hi TP!", "Howya doin'?" Maybe they are taken in, maybe they are playing TP. Dave Barry (from 1986) on male cheerleaders:
Before I unveil my Pigskin Preview, however, I must say a few serious words here about a problem that, regrettably, has reached epidemic proportions in the world of sports in recent years. You know the problem I'm talking about, sports fans. I'm talking about male cheerleaders. I don't know where you grew up, but where I grew up, there were certain things a guy absolutely did not do, and cheerleading is about six of them. A guy who led cheers where I grew up would have been driven around for a couple of hours inside somebody's engine compartment. Most likely Steve Stromack's. ref cold war military ideas.
My favorite was the triple B-36. B-36 had a very long range. But not far enough to hit Southern USSR from the Central US. AF figured out they could take 3 B-36s and connect them - wingtip to wingtip - and that giant THING would be able to fly close enough to launch a (3?) small, fast fighter bomber carrying a nuclear bomb. After launch the triple B-36 would break apart and land somewhere. The fighter bombers had enough range to make it back to Turkey. The B-52, B-58 and such made this idea obsolete so it never got anywhere but WOW I'd like to see what it looked like on takeoff. Posted by: ArthurK at January 26, 2019 10:46 PM (KbaGy) 221

Pilot Bread: "Sailor Boy" Brand? I used to favor that on week long hikes in the mountains. I could find it out West sometimes and elsewhere, but it seems to have disappeared. Hadn't heard that name in a while. It's not bread, to the uni-initiated. More like a very large round saltine. If you threw one at somebody it would hurt.
I bought a can of Spam just to see if it was ... useful in any way or, even edible. It didn't seem to be. Lightly cubed and fried a bit, I tried to see if it was "OK" for maybe omelets or something. Not particularly. I like foods that don't spoil for camping and hiking and seeing what works as substitutes for snowy days or whatever. Fresh is always, always better of course, but. Now condensed milk, and evaporated milk, is handy stuff. Evaporated milk makes a reasonable gravy for biscuits and sausage gravy, and those powdered pudding mixes, it doesn't do so well in some other things. It makes a reasonable hot cocoa mix, so does sweetened condensed. I refuse to buy the pre-mixed cocoa pouches. The pilot bread was good because it could be loaded up with salami and cheese. Anything more than that is showing off. A lot of people like oatmeal and ramen, especially. Posted by: Common Tater at January 26, 2019 10:55 PM (yUPCi) 247

Well, that's one theory. He certainly did take nude pics of young girls (as did other Victorian photographers -- the belief at the time was that children were sexless and pure). The other theory is that the hushed-up scandal has to do with him banging Alice's older sister (an older teen) or possibly Alice's mother. I have the whole album actually. It's called Partners In Crime and IMHO it's pretty good. Rupert Holmes went in some... interesting directions with some of the other songs. After last night's ONT, I know better than to axe. Also, that Utoob page had some links to "yacht rock" from that era. And you just know that Christopher Cross' Sailing was on it, prolly first. We groaned about those songs back then, but that's ten times better than the dreck they pass off for "music" these days. Also, lawn. Both of the strip sides ran timed sets, with intermissions of 45 minutes. In the late 80s, a decent looking guy could score with the horny ladies during those times like shooting fish in a barrel. But it's deceptive to think of it as a phone that costs $1k, really. If all you want is a mobile phone that makes calls and can send and receive SMS text, you can get a $20 flip phone like AOP said. They're still around, only they're 1/6 of what they used to cost ten years ago. They work fine and the battery lasts a week on a charge. There's no GPS, no voice-activated assistant, and it doesn't know your credit card number. If send and receive pictures, text, use GPS navigation, order take-out for lunch, pay for gas and beef jerky, post wisdom on the HQ, pay bills, watch movies, listen to music, and otherwise spend about 1-4 hours a day on your phone, it's not really a phone at that point, and it's not ridiculous to charge a lot for one that does all that. Some people don't really use full desktop or laptop computers anymore because they don't need them. But if you don't want to do all that on a phone, you can still get the flip phone. Since my Mom worked, she'd make a SPAM dinner on occasions, regular SPAM (they didn't have all those flavors back then) sliced, put into a saucepan with brown sugar and white vinegar and made into a quickie 'bar-b-q' SPAM. Once in a while, when I feel like springing for a can of SPAM, I still make my Mom's SPAM dish. Makes great sandwiches, too. Two slices of bar-b-q SPAM on crappy white bread toast with a slice of American cheese.

Posted by: usntakim profoundly deplorable at January 26, 2019 11:34 PM (0OmEj) I like scotches well enough, but the price is often prohibitive, and they can be wildly different in taste, and I never got the hang of it. I remember when ELP were brand new. And Yes. Teh Doobies, Steely Dan, Queen, The Police, Van Halen. Grew up listening to the Animals, the Stones and the Beatles, Dave Clark Five, Paul Revere and the Raiders and every other band from that era. You'd think they'd never play anything but country music in Alabama, but you'd be wrong. There was that, but it was mixed in with just about every other type of music you could think of. Not like today. The first concert I attended was Herman's Hermits at one of those Cavalcade of Stars thingys with about 5 other groups. It wasn't until I got moved to Huntspatch that I heard primarily country. But then, we young'uns were listening to Classical Rock (like ELP and Yes) stuff too, and would tune in the Grand Ole Opry live on Saturday nights from the Nashville station when we were cruising around looking for other musclecars to drag race. So I bet you remember bands like Y&T and WASP...
Posted by: qdpsteve at January 26, 2019 11:53 PM (miE9U) Yup. Also, older Scorpions (Animal Magnetism and Lovedrive were excellent), Def Leppard, Saxon, the Heavy Metal Soundtrack, Black Sabbath (Dio), and older stuff like Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Thin Lizzy, Grand Funk, Pink Floyd, hell, even Kiss when they were good (1974-77). Funny thing, Metallica was in existence by then, but had not reached us when we graduated. Thrash metal came later in my life. Even funnier, the first thrash band I bought was Testament's first album. Went off on a tangent there. Also loud: the formation of B52's that flew overhead at a few thousand feet, northbound, round about the time of the Cuban Missile crisis.

By the 1980s American schools weren't into duck-n-cover. Especially in Texas in the middle-to-late 1980s it was becoming increasingly clear that even the Russians weren't all that into communism anymore. Their system was rotten and everyone knew it, so the whiners in the MSM complained instead about Reaganite 'superpatriotism'.

Splunge, what I remember is a scene where people in a bunker are listening to a presidential speech, made by someone who sounded like Reagan.
The speech itself was pretty innocuous. The standard stuff you'd expect to hear in that situation. Then immediately afterward, some people get into an argument over whether or not the president indicated "who started it." As I recall, it wasn't a slap at Reagan. Not a huge one, anyway. qdpsteve has got me thinking about theater plays and productions.
The absolute funniest play I've ever seen is probably The People vs. Friar Lawrence, or Who Killed Romeo and Juliet? The best acted play I've ever seen was The Screwtape Letters at the Mercury Theatre with Peter Kevoian as Screwtape and Aislin Mulligan as Toadpipe. Really blew me away. Just the two of them on a blacked-out stage with a wing chair and a ladder. Enthralling. I still have the program tacked up on the corkboard in my office. Quint, I don't remember anything in The Day After that ever hinted that one side or the other was to blame for the nuclear war, due to obstinacy.

Well had an Amy Bishop of a customer. This jive turkey shows up with a posse. Am the only one in all of electronics/wireless/photo and am in Pick-Up Today because there is no one there either.
So take care of customer picking stuff up and then ask him what he wants. He wants the Straight Talk iPhone6. I tell him we are out. Next question is a bunch of spleef of him always coming to the store and we always out followed by when will we get anymore in. So politely tell him we might get some in tonight or tomorrow, we have no control of when stuff gets shipped. Him and his posse leave so I think all is done. Nope. Next he corrals the photo guy who has returned. I walk in at this point as photo guy gets on phone to call for management and the customer goes ballistic accusing him of being a smart a$$. I exit stage left to go help another customer because frankly all this is heading towards is more screaming. Take care of that customer and they are still hanging around counter. And no management. So I try to call, no answer. Tell him I will hunt down a manager. Go do so and find one over in Grocery. Give a quick rundown and we walk over there. So guy starts ranting about how we don't know how to do customer service. That he owns two businesses and it shouldn't take a manager to tell him that the phones are no longer available. I am standing there quietly thinking 'where did you learn your people skills? A$$holes-R-Us?' Finally him and his posse go away. The assistant manager apologizes that no customer should act like that. My answer got a snort. I said, "I've been chewed up by Generals." Yep. The establishment and Deep State are keeping under wraps just how much the ChiComs have pwned us over the past few decades. They go nuts over phantom Rooskie collusion when they've been selling us out to the ChiComs for 30 pieces of silver for years. One that pissed me off is the crown jewels of our nuke secrets. The non-spherical primaries on the MIRV warheads. The ChiComs got the plans for those. Basically, the primary is an implosion type fission thingy. A spherical design is the simplest to do. The computational complexity for non-sperhical designs increases exponentially. We had that, and the ChiComs stole it. Non-spherical, egg-shaped primaries can better fit in the conical MIRV reentry vehicles, allowing them to be smaller and lighter and fit more on one missile. That tech was the crown jewel of our nuclear secrets. You can thank Bubba for that, IIRC. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at January 27, 2019 12:49 AM (f1Vqw) 605

Not to piss on a parade, but the original Toy Story story was a ripoff of a lesser known movie called The Brave Little Toaster.
Disney did a flanking maneuver on that ripoff by just buying the rights to TBLT outright and sweeping the affair under the carpet. Pixar did a Joe Biden on that one. Posted by: logprof at January 27, 2019 02:25 AM (e7oj4) 696

Things seem to be getting a little slow, so I'm going to tell a story. I was in the sixth grade during the Cuban Missile crises and was all to familiar with the old duck and cover drill. One day, when the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife, the air raid sirens went off. It wasn't a scheduled test or a scheduled drill. It was a mistake, but at the time no one knew that. The fear and terror in the adults faces was unmistakable. Parents who lived close to the school suddenly started showing up. Their fear was palpable. It was finally determined that the sirens were lit off by mistake and they dismissed us for the day. It shook me.
I don't know the age I was, maybe 14 or 15, when I found this book, the title was "The Effects of Nuclear Weapons" and was fairly technical. There was a lot I didn't understand, but I got the gist of a lot of it. Bottom line, nukes are bad juju. Later, I discovered the Soviet targets in the Denver area. 1) The flagpole between the State Capital and the Civic Center. 2) The Rocky Mountain Arsenal (Chemical and Biological Weapons storage and testing). 3) Rocky Flats (Manufacturing site for Plutonium pits for thermonuclear weapons) 4) Lowry AFB (In the sixties still an active AFB, mostly training for TAC, but with runways long enough to accommodate B-52's) 5) Denver Federal Center (A crap ton of government agencies and workers) 6) Lockheed Martin facility in Waterton Canyon (Titan and Atlas missiles were tested and built there) 7) Stapelton Airport (Whose runways were long enough to accommodate B-52's). The last was the most disturbing to me. The school I attended during the Cuban Missile Crises was less that a quarter mile from the runways at Stapelton. The only thing duck and cover would have done for me is to make me a more compact charcoal briquet. Posted by: Old Blue at January 27, 2019 02:32 AM (gEvQ8) 701

Posted by: AmericanKestrel with a Smile and a MAGA hat at January 27, 2019 02:23 AM (IDhUW) In that down time, kids need to age-appropriate read for fun to help foster creativity as well. I was reading kids' versions of the classics quite young; I had a set of them, Ivanhoe being one I remember, along with some Hans Christen Anderson tales. Reading was fundamental (pun intended) in developing my sense of wonder and adventure, and I'd want to play-act that out. I fought as a cowboy with a hat and toy six-guns on my holster, staring down the black-hatted villain. I played the knight, fighting against the evil king (well, my neighbor actually, but you know what I mean). Reading allowed my imagination to run wild. But then I used to read The Encyclopedia Britannica my parents bought for the house just for fun. I'd take down a volume, crack it open to a random page and start reading entries. With my Mom, it was either be constructively busy or there's a bedroom or a garage that needs cleaning. So I read. Still would rather read than clean. The more things change, . . . Here's a daughter/father reconciliation story:
At 15, I dropped out of high school and 'ran away from home'. Was months before returning. Parents were happy but still hurt; I was resentful and ran again for more months. Then lived w g-parents for about a year before turning 18 and moving out for good (I thought). Jerbs fell through and I came 'home' but barely got along [again!] with mom and dad. Long story short: I put my parents thru HELL, but they still loved me and helped me through. Now, Dad needs me. Mom passed several years ago-- siblings live far away or work odd shifts. I'm glad to do what I can for Dad. I owe him *that* and much more! C'mon, you're a Moron. Hey, let's hear from some Dead White Christian Guy on this: Suppose one reads a story of filthy atrocities in the paper. Then suppose that something turns up suggesting that the story might not be quite true, or not quite so bad as it was made out. Is one's first feeling, "Thank God, even they aren't quite so bad as that"' or is it a feeling of disappointment, and even a determination to cling to the first story for the sheer pleasure of thinking your enemies are as bad as possible? If it is the second then it is, I am afraid, the first step in a process which, if followed to the end, will make us into devils. You see, one is beginning to wish that black was a little blacker. If we give that wish its head, later on we shall wish to see grey as black, and then to see white itself as black. Finally we shall insist on seeing everything -- God and our friends and ourselves included -- as bad, and not be able to stop doing it: we shall be fixed for ever in a universe of pure hatred. P.S.
