8 Justice Ginsburg is not in the office today, again.

She is seeking to collect on a bet she has with Bill "Big Anus" Clinton and Barack "Little Anus" Obama that she can't drive to Texas, retrieve a truck-load of beer and return to Atlanta in 28 hours.

She recruited one of her clerks to drive the truck while she drives ahead running interference in her Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. She told me the two of them are currently "east-bound and down, loaded up and trucking."

She said she had a little bit of trouble with one small-town sheriff and his son, but that seems to be behind her now.

While she is driving she is listening to case summaries and reviewing draft opinions and communicating her decisions over the CB radio.

So if you are out on the road and see Justice Ginsburg speeding by in her black Trans Am, be sure to tip her off to any smokey bears you know of in the area, good buddy. Her handle is "Notorious."

20 Something that Tucker hit on in his rant a few weeks ago, is that the donor class of the GOP are functionally libertarian. They don't care about social issues. Case in point: Paul Ryan. Why expend political capital on abortion, gay rights, religious freedom, etc? It's more important to push for more cheap imports from China, and bring more peasant workers into the US to drive down domestic wages.

36 This is really hard to read because twitter is teh suckz, but I think I get the gist.

The GOPe bought the left's lie that nobody could make moral judgments about things. But at some point (and maybe it was like this from the beginning), they stopped saying "don't judge us" to "judge them for judging us!"And because people need a moral compass, despite what assholes like Penn Gilette say, we are not naturally "good" people, most of the unwashed masses accepted this new moral framework. And the GOPe cannot disagree with it, because they spent the last 50 years shrugging their shoulders and saying they couldn't judge.

I am convinced that the reason Paul Ryan didn't have things set in the House is because he believed the dossier, because he is an idiot, and thus assumed Trump would be impeached and oh we better to careful!

Then, when they win their elections on that platform, they are free to pursue their promises without having to lie to their voters.

I am pretty sure the Clinton/Obama machine was certain they would find collusion because EVERYONE is compromised.

That Trump was actually using real live voter donations and his own money to fund his run never entered their minds. No one does THAT!

98 Ultimately, the social conservatism informs and forms the foundation of fiscal conservatism. It gives the why and the moral justification for fiscal conservatism. If you abandon that social aspect -- the rightness and truth of it -- then you eventually, inevitably will abandon the fiscal part as well.

Fiscal conservatism only makes sense in a socially conservative framework. You want smaller government and less spending not out of an affection for smallness, but out of a conviction that this is right and better for the nation, and because it is unethical and tyrannical to not do so. That you harm the nation's soul and culture by government bloat.

It is the abandonment of social conservatism that creates big government nanny state; its the belief that you cannot rely on people to do what is right or good for them, and thus Top Men in position of power must do it for them, and the only way for that to take place is if the government has enough money, influence, and legal reach to make that take place.

You cannot have the fiscal without the social.

That is not to say that there are not social conservatives who lurve them some big government. We've had presidents in the past just like that and plenty of people on the right in that position. They are just fine with a huge invasive octopus of a government if they control the power to make sure their ideas are imposed on others.

157 Not really OT, given the segue into policy stuff at the end.

Shorter Hayward (at least in part): it's not about "surrender", or "cowardice", or being a "cuck". It's about *opposition to Trump's/others' actual policy objectives*.

Now, one go the reductionist route and say "Chamber of Commerce donors!" - and obviously that's part of the explanation. Unfortunately I don't think it's all of it.

Excellent example - and my usual, but fully justified, hobby horse - is Senate action/inaction on illegal migration and border security. Mitch, hero of judicial nominations, as sort of dropped all pretense of anything but hostility towards Trump's key illegal migration priorities.

From the outset of shut-down kabuki, Mitch announced the Senate would only vote as a rubber-stamp to something WH and House already had approved. Translation: he will continue to not have his caucus record a single vote on the biggest political issues of the day. Incredible, really.

So why is Mitch putting up 2 votes tomorrow? Probably because one measure (the "GOP" proposal) contains a gigantic de facto amnesty stumble (DACA and temporary protected status), not to mention doubling of H-2B (short term work visas).

GOP/other voters have not replaced the bulk of GOP incumbents, thus they are getting more of the same. Trump might have had a lot more leeway, but the collapse of the constitutional order/usurpation of power by the judiciary have proceeded so far, the presidency is effectively neutered on key issues.

My automatic response is now that any report that could be turned into fuel for an SJW conflagration is false until proven otherwise beyond a shadow of a doubt.

When the tragic shooting of Jazmine Barnes here in Houston was first attributed to a "white male in a pickup" I told Her Majesty that it would turn out to be something different. Sho' 'nuff, after "community activists" and that corrupt piece of filth Sheila Jackson Lee called it a "hate crime" it emerged that the shooter and his accomplice were not driving a pickup and were (*ahem*) not white.

The commonsense trick of treating all pat narratives with suspicion seems to have escaped our tribunes of the news media.

188 I see things differently.

I think a lot of the conservatives lost their way when they gave up on religion. Religion was a kind of guide book on morality and they lost religion, and with it they lost all morality.

The reason to oppose things like gay marriage, or abortion, or decadence is not because religion requires it, but because it is bad for individuals, and society.

But those people who feel they are above religion also, it turns out, are the kind of people who need a guide book on what is moral and right, and good for individuals and society.

They haven't figured that out yet.

So they did not try to be passive as a strategy, but because they actually agreed on those social issues.

And this is the key. You can't say "I'm a fiscal conservative but I don't care about social issues" because SOCIAL/MORAL ISSUES COST MONEY. The left makes sure of it. It is not about and has never been about equal freedom for all. It's always been about making the productive members of society subsidize and support the preferred supporters of big government. There's no freedom to disagree or decline to pay for these things. Do it or be labeled and ostracized.

"I don't care about social issue X because I'm only a fiscal conservative" is a cop-out, willful blindness at best.

210 Oh yes, there's serious trouble in Trump immigration land. H-1Bs. And H-2Bs. Yuuuuge actual issues - Trump delivered some searing, correct, comments on the H-1B outrage during the campaign. But current action and body posture are very very un-promising.

Some of us have been saying that action, real action (which includes political action, forcing issues, having votes, making people take positions) needed to start right out of the gate - mostly because many understand the GOP is a large part of the problem. The almost ostentatious refusal of both houses, nominally GOP, to do *anything* related to the key immigration issues was nature's way of screaming at Steven Miller, the former Koch brother lobbyist running the legislative shop, and Trump himself that they needed to be at general quarters.

Miller understands all of this, he worked against it from the inside, in the Senate.

224 211 199 What are "social issues"? I was considered them to be issues that were regarding morality like abortion, gay marriage, etc.

Is "gun control" a social issue?

Regardless, our deficit and debt are so out of control that I'm not sure it's worth even addressing fiscal issues any longer, at least not the unpopular issues. Almost like a household that's a million dollars in debt making a big deal out of a 50 cents off coupon.

Wake me up when we have some sort of currency crisis and we are talking about cutting trillions.

H1Bs make sense on paper, but have been wildly abused and H1B dynamics make it so that organizations end up dominated with them.

The H1B is predicated on your employment. Part of the deal was supposed to be your YUGE expertise, but this got fudged early on and H1B salaries were about the same as (not superior to) the average. When layoffs happen, you lay off your citizens because they aren't beholden to you for their visa.

Do this a few times, and the layoffs will hit H1Bs, too, because there are now large numbers of them. Then they're desperate for the next gig because they don't want to lose the visa - so the wage ratchets down a bit. Do this for a couple of decades and you get H1B (or former H1B) dominance of hiring and staff, and a ratcheting wage. Everyone wins except the employees - especially if those employees are citizens.

This is easily fixed. H1Bs are supposed to be badasses. Badasses get paid. The H1B salary should be at least 150% your company's median salary in that division. If they're that good, this is true anyway. If they're not, you're cheating.

Yes, you'll get some from you parents, but Parents don't spend a lot of time with Kids now that Mom is in the workplace so they can make ends meet.

Add in that Christianity really changed in the early 1900s, from a Manly sort of philosophy where works and deeds were important, to a philosophy where your INTENT was all that mattered, thus becoming a much more Passive thing.

You won't hear Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition in many church's in the US anymore.

I really don't care what someone else gets up to or who they get up to it with, but no matter what you don't want to fund, you're evil. "Do what you want," is evil. The most liberal/libertarian sorts I know are *evil* because they believe that what someone else does is not their business, nor concern, and in leftist-world anymore, it HAS to be. You can't just not care, you have to have a celebration. You can't just not care, you have to pay for it. There's this performative-morality that doesn't allow non-participation.

It's not that "you can't legislate morality" has been abandoned just as soon as the idea became mainstream, it's that you MUST legislate morality. Theirs. The 1st Amendment is officially in the crapper.

284 Ace,

Can't thank you enough for continuing to post on this topic. What has happened in that school is nothing short of trauma which will take a LONG time to recover from.

It is closed until the police say it's OK.

People have called the kid's parents and demanded their jobs.

Despite the ABUNDANCE of evidence which vindicates these kids, people are still acting as if they have done everything they're accused of and worse.

This is an important moment.

285 Unless there have been dramatic, almost total, changes to the H-1B statutes since I worked on such cases, it is insanely out of control and lawless.

Back when I was personally involved, it sometimes required intervention at the highest levels to secure *ONE* H-1B, which on its face was obviously valid (involving expertise unavailable in the domestic labor pool, at any price). Think senators calling INS commissioners personally. That sort of intervention.

Now? Wholesale replacement of IT departments (Disney, etc) with cheaper foreigners doing (less well) the same things.

False. Money is issued by the state because they want to control the currency that is used for taxation. Whatever is accepted for taxes is the money used in general, unless the economy is profoundly broken in really significant ways. This is why assignats failed in France.

The state dictates what money *is* but not how much of it there is, or where it comes from. There is no such thing as "government money" since the government doesn't product anything, and production is the source of wealth. The marker is defined by the state, but the wealth it represents is not.

From JJ's links in the Morning Report:

Agents of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task
Force arrestedMuse Abdikadir Muse, Mohamud Abdikadir Muse and
Mohamed Salat Haji

What is with these names?
Is there a wheel somewhere that
burka-clad women spin when they pop out a kid (strike that, women are
property, they are not allowed to do anything but breed), that a new
muzzie father spins to determine the name of their child? If so,
there must be maybe only 10 different names from which to choose.

In this case, of the nine slots to
fill, we have:

Muse = 3 times.

Abdikadir = 2 times (interesting
note: I looked up local (to me) pro hockey player Justin Adbelkader
the other day, and it turns out he is part arabic, and his
grandfather anglicized his name. This seems to be a similar
variation.)

Mohamud = Mohamed (same thing) =
2 times

Salat = once. (What does this mean?
Peace? Salad?)

Haji = once. It looks like they
caught an actual "haji" here.

I have nothing else, other than to ask
if the Sandmann kid's interview was aired today, and how did that go?

Posted by: blaster at January 23, 2019 01:37 PM (2sspa)

359 As I journeyed toward severe conservatism I began to realize that whenever I actively agreed with the Left on an issue, there was always some unforeseen consequence and/or hidden reason for their stance.

Example:

Me: oh yeah I totally agree we need to protect the Earth
Them: Great! Now we're gonna tax your air and do what the shit we want to the Earth from our private jets and mansions.
Me: ohhh

That lead me to feel used. It only happened twice and then I started to rethink ANY position I agreed with them on. Including abortion which I came to realize is the single biggest atrocity of our time and will one day be looked upon like we do slavery today. At which point they will say the parties "switched" or some shit and Republicans are responsible for all the perished souls.

My point is be extremely careful when you find yourself agreeing with the Left on ANYTHING. It's like that bias when you see something wrong in the paper in your area of expertise but then forget about it while you read the other sections. Ask yourself why they would only be unseemly and sick about just a *couple* issues? It's EVERY ISSUE. If you want to know the wrong position, find out theirs.

Trump doesn't (dramatically) change the course of things on migration/immigration (which covers a lot of ground, including basics like rule of law, constitutional order vis-a-vis the judiciary's role, on and on), results, his presidency will be a failure and our troubles will be dire.

Success on other fronts - including general vague concepts of "culture war" - are of course valuable and important. But those aren't areas actually subject to concrete action from the govt.

seriously? the moral answer seems pretty obvious to me, with or without religion. I think many default to "live and let live," but

1. Once you are around children and babies you understand that they are not "lumps of cells" but they have a personality and are fully human starting,... when? surely it has nothing to do with birth, but it had to start somewhere. Only someone who is fooling themselves can think it starts at some magical date when the mother decides not to kill it.

2. gay marriage is more tricky, but I think AIDS resolved the question of whether homosexuality is good for individuals or society pretty definitively. You have to be pretty delusional to ignore that.

3. transgender? that's a gimmie. These people need help, not surgery.

False. Money is issued by the state because they want to control the
currency that is used for taxation. Whatever is accepted for taxes is
the money used in general, unless the economy is profoundly broken in
really significant ways. This is why assignats failed in France.

The state dictates what money *is* but not how much of it there is,
or where it comes from. There is no such thing as "government money"
since the government doesn't product anything, and production is the
source of wealth. The marker is defined by the state, but the wealth it
represents is not.

I know this is a very big deal, and I don't mean it lightly, but if the Church feels this way, then why not excommunicate them? If they're beyond salvation by any means, then that is okay. If they are not beyond salvation by any means, then denying them their rights to defend themselves while telling them that G-d will know the truth is despicable.

They always increase the deficit, at first. Because the benefits of tax cuts take a little while to reach the economy, there's a lag between "I passed the law" and "my paycheck is bigger, etc." But its not a very big lag and the losses are largely offset by businesses who immediately begin expansion, hiring, and investment upon the news because they know it will help them soon.

Which is what happened this time.

I still pay WAY MORE in taxes than I would have under Reagan, but yea, it's at least something. i still think they bungled the issue, my accountant was telling me to take advantage of the new tax cuts I'll have to convert to an S-corp from an LLC.

Problem is, tax cuts are just not a winning issue as the middle class just doesn't pay all that much in federal income taxes. if a household makes under $50k, you basically don't pay income taxes. It's the 1% that are getting soaked, and "tax cuts for the rich" is just not a winning stance.

Honestly, I would trade a lower tax bracket for say everyone under a million a year for some sort of "super tax" on the ultra wealthy. This country is now being run by left-wing, super rich oligarchs that say they want this anyway.

Self-interest is a good start, with a couple of caveats...

A stable society that respects people's lives and property is in my self-interest. A high-trust society is in my self-interest. A society that prioritizes children's healthy development is in my self interest. Reciprocal social norms are in my self interest. Manly-men dedicated to the support and protection of women and children is in my self interest. Not normalizing infanticide is in my self-interest.

What blows my mind about so much lately is that the left (in particular) seems to think that they can destroy reciprocal social norms of free-speech and respect, of tolerance, of trust, of equality under the law, of certain areas being apart-from and not subject to political infighting or mob rule... and it will never hurt THEM.

The calls to deconstruct the patriarchy are terrifying. We worked hard to get where we are and it is not in my SELF INTEREST to let it all be torn up because some short sighted idiot has their panties in a knot because someone won't pay for her birth control or abortion.

Morale was low because the airstrip was surrounded by mortars and rockets hidden in the surrounding hills, and big Russian and Chinese artillery lodged in the side of CoRoc Ridge, eleven kilometers away across the Laotian border. The Marine Corps ordered us to report for a special mission. Next thing you know, Nathan and I are on a C-130 and are going to HALO in. Standard Recon stuff. We jumped at 10,000 feet from the C-130. Nathan was carrying a Frigidaire Frost-Proof Food-life Preserver Refrigerator. I was carrying a 200 pound duffle bag filled with Swedish and German porn mags. The good stuff. When our chutes opened, the NVA .50-calibers started firing. We were about a 1000 feet from the ground and I looked over and Nathan was beating on his drum as bullets were flying all around us.

590 Yes BUT.....

A huge fault line goes through even cultural conservatives and it is called abortion. It particularly goes to many, otherwise culturally women who will viscerally reject any candidate who they see as imposing on their "right to choose."

I'm not minimizing the moral position of abortion opponents, but this is a reality. Therefore, the problem that the GOP has (somewhat correctly) seen but reacted to wrongly, is how not to alienate a huge group of women Republicans. Their solution has been to avoid the cultural terrain altogether which, as we all know, has been disastrous and left actual conservatives effectively without a party except for rare candidates like a Cruz, a Paul or now a Donald Trump.

If there is a solution I think its in the GOP (or party that may have to take its place) to engage in the cultural issues, but perhaps try to keep a lid on the more absolute pro life constituencies, e.g. by taking a position against late term abortion and other true horrors, but keeping the rest of matters consciously to the States or individual conscience.

Posted by: Zod at January 23, 2019 01:59 PM (hgpSN)

And I think that religions can be evaluated at least in part by how well they apply in practical ways to the world.

I was mostly just trying to address the "self-interest" thing because it's so often taken to mean short-sighted self-interest or even a permission to give up on impulse control. Or the stupid "voting against their interests" thing which usually means that some toothless hick clinging to his bible and his gun didn't vote for government control and hand-outs.

Oh yeah... and a vibrant and dynamic economy is in my self-interest, even if it's someone else who gets rich. Rising tides raise all boats.

The smirking silence with which Sandmann confronted elder Nathan Phillips was actually incredibly telling, according to Adam Howard, an education professor at Colby College and the author of Learning Privilege: Lessons of Power and Identity in Affluent Schooling. Sandmann's expression clearly "communicates that I'm better than you, that I don't even have enough respect for you to even say anything to communicate," Howard told me.

The student's behavior was the embodiment of privilege, Howard said, and nothing that came after the initial viral video changes that.

624 I'll put in a (sort of) good word for National Review...

NR got out of the "Conservative Leadership" business in 2016, when they went squishy on Trump. But they still are a good forum for ideas, and as long as you view them as an advisor, rather than a leader -- for interesting ideas rather than guidance.

I'll read just about anything Kevin Williamson writes. But I don't let him define a worldview. He has touched on this a bit himself -- he isn't a prophet, just a grumpy advisor with some good takes.

Jonah Goldberg, on the other hand, doesn't really provide anything worth the time. He either recycles tired platitudes, or when he addresses something topical, he is so late to the party that he doesn't cover any ground that hasn't been trodden a zillion times already. I don't disagree with a lot of stuff he writes, I have just heard it a thousand times already.

The others -- well, some of what they have is good. You got to sort through a lot of it. But don't expect a lot of moral courage or swimming against the current, and you have to accept that a writer might be good on one topic and out to lunch on another.

We would be sending a schizophrenic, incoherent message, to put it mildly.

627 Who else is in the game?

Every fucking player on our side is sitting on the bench, most feigning injury. trump is trying to snap the ball, block, throw and catch the fucking pass. And half the time he succeeds! Mostly because the left is lazy, slovenly, fat, stupid, and old. 5 Trumps could run right over 20 of these leftists assholes, but we only have one who shows up to play each week.

At some point, you don't play, you get cut from the team. Miss enough games and your done.

Fuck me, some of these guys get out on the field and immediately score on our goal! Once in a career I might forgive, but every time they take the field they run the wrong way? What is that about?
