Does the American Psychological Association believe in science? [KT]
Men must be made into women. Women are the perfect working model; men are the defective deviation from the proper functioning of the model.You should probably re-read the post, as it offers a good explanation of the reasoning behind the new guidelines. Since Ace's post, I have seen a few other interesting observations. Insty put up an excerpt from a WSJ piece by Erika Komisar entitled, Masculinity Isn't a Sickness. It starts:
In my practice as a psychotherapist, I've seen an increase of depression in young men who feel emasculated in a society that is hostile to masculinity. New guidelines from the American Psychological Association defining "traditional masculinity" as a pathological state are likely only to make matters worse. . . The truth is that masculine traits such as aggression, competitiveness and protective vigilance not only can be positive, but also have a biological basis. Boys and men produce far more testosterone, which is associated biologically and behaviorally with increased aggression and competitiveness. They also produce more vasopressin, a hormone originating in the brain that makes men aggressively protective of their loved ones.
She also has some thoughts on negative judgments about feminine women. And Insty includes a nice quote by Andy Ngo, a guy who now stands up to the left on a regular basis, on why he used to attack masculinity.
A little earlier, David Thompson reviewed a few pieces of commentary and noted the absence of any meaningful reference to things like BIOLOGY or TESTOSTERONE in the APA document. How could discussions of those nasty science-y topics help us understand men and boys?However, the word privilege occurs 19 times, and the word transgender no fewer than 60. As DeGroot points out, it seems unwise to redefine masculinity in order to flatter the resentments and insecurities of the fringe and maladjusted - say, "social justice" enthusiasts who consider themselves "marginalised" by expectations of competence, competitiveness and emotional self-possession. Or those who describe themselves as transsexual, non-binary or "gender non-conforming." As if a proclivity for adventurousness or risk-taking, and a desire for achievement, were fundamentally a problem, something to be fixed. And it goes without saying that the writers of the APA's guidelines would be unlikely to enjoy lives of comfort and status without a great many others embracing the values and inclinations - including ambition, stoicism and courage - that our self-imagined betters strive to pathologise.This quote from Andrew Sullivan surprised me a little:

It concerns his day job and makes the APA look kind of foolish. How can you look at groups of children, discover the most naturally aggressive children among two-year-old boys (older children being less aggressive) and attribute that to "traditional masculine ideology" rather than to, say, biology? Do people really treat infants and toddlers in more sexually binary ways than they do older children? The really useful part of the video is the discussion of the positive effects of rough-and-tumble play (generally between adult males and young children). Especially in the case of aggressive little boys. The kind of little boys who could grow up to be bullies or sexual predators. Did Gillette make this clear in their recent ad? Doesn't sound like the APA is much interested in promoting this civilization-enhancing activity.

I won't belabor the argument points, but what I walked away with is that -- as typically happens -- liberals have added another unproven concept to the culture wars.
There is no basis for the term "toxic masculinity" yet here we are debating it. You may as well be debating Neverland and unicorns. Yet, it has metastasized in our debate and will never be removed, while traditional terms of masculinity and Christian values have been outlawed by the politically correct.
Sadly, we are left with the irrational debris of the left scattered across public discourse and sterilized of those legitimate terms of who we are by political correctness.

It's more about the fact that psychologists are feeling more and more marginalized, by a society that doesn't value its work, primarily because psychology schools are churning out robots who think therapy is about applying a paint by numbers "treatment plan" for what ails people.
So if anything, this APA guideline is more a "#metoo" document, meant to give them relevance in a world that is increasingly listening to other voices, from other disciplines, who have been, if anything, mouthing these platitudes for decades.
That's how it reads to me: A decades old perspective on "toxic masculinity" that seems to think the world is made up of wife beaters, Mad Men type patriarchy in America's offices and board rooms, and schoolyards of bullies beating the shit out of less "manly" boys.
Yeah, ladies, you would have had a point, if you came out with this document in the 60s or 70s. Welcome to the 21st century though. You won. You've created a generation of soibois, and now you're waiting for the rest of us to die off. Good luck with that.

If it comes to that "envy and the desire to succeed by hobbling your competitors because you are lazy or stupid" is also toxic.
And that's the problem - situations that arise are so varied that the only way you can determine who is in the right is to examine each situation individually, not come up with some blanket evaluation based on looking at an irrelevant attribute like gender (or race).
It leads to absurdities such as "if a man is promoted over a woman, it's due to his toxic ambition and industriousness" or "if a black is shot by a white, it must be due to racism, even if the black man was trying to rob and kill him at the time".
Maybe men in the past were afraid of women, and hobbled women of more merit than they had. Now I think statements like this APA one are due to women who are resentful of men who are more successful than they are and mistake their envy for being the "victim" of toxic masculinity. Remember that woman who failed the firefighter physical tests, so she sued and got the standards lowered? I think nowadays it is the feminists who push this shit who are the envious worms trying to hobble those more qualified than themselves.

I have not dated for a while, but when I was I noticed this too. I am an Alpha, and never made any pretense otherwise. This would seem to be fine for a month or two, and then the testing would start to see if I would break down. It would get incredibly tiresome, so I would draw a line. Things inevitably went South from there.

Good grief, I got through about 4 minutes of that video. That was as much willpower as I could muster. He already offered to let them have a (lengthy) path to citizenship in exchange for the wall a year ago. So this wouldn't be a new offer on his part. But it does send a public message that he's willing to compromise on certain points with the Democrats in order to get the wall built.
i.e. he's not the one holding the government hostage.

I have seen pictures of him clean-shaven with shorter hair, though, and he has a gorgeous face underneath all that hair. What's cool is he's apparently a real family man, spending most of his time with his wife (Lisa Bonet, who looks great and not like she's at least 10 years his senior) and kids.
He's not my type, but I saw Aquaman because I try to see all the superhero movies in the theater (assuming I'm aware they are out). It's my favorite genre. No chick flicks for me, unless maybe it has a hot actor I like.
For example I will see anything (short of porn) with Idris Elba. I love Chris Evans too, even though he's a leftist douche. Christian Bale used to do it for me (even in that movie with Jennifer Lawrence where he was a pudgy middle aged guy - American Gangster? - that was kind of weird), but not so much any more.

I enjoyed it. But I don't have a high bar for superhero movies. They just need to be fun, with cool action. It passed that test for me. There was a romantic-like interlude that annoyed me, lol, but it wasn't long before the action resumed.

It's not a moral or legal or constitutional issue - it is 100% a tactical issue
Any significant amnesty of any kind, that is now or soon, and not conditioned on *prior* achievement of a border barrier, asylum fix, and massive, comprehensive internal enforcement, is nearly guaranteed to be a disaster.
The watching eyes outside the borders will take it as a go signal, the watching eyes inside the border will take it as a sign they have won or will eventually. And while they might be wrong in those takes, they will be rational, and represent the "smart money" in terms of how to bet.
