They Politicize Sports, Eating, Dressing, Sitting And Now Shaving?
What's Next?

Gillette Shave.jpg

I have a friend who is, from the few political conversations we have had, far to my left. Now, that isn't saying much because most people are, but he really is a hard-core liberal.

But...we don't talk politics! We talk booze and sex and food and cars and philosophy and marvel at the wonders of nature and science and engineering....but no politics. The only time we talk politics is if there are other people around and that is the direction the conversation is going. We never bring it up. Both of us are sufficiently versed in rhetorical techniques, and pretty damned stubborn, that we figured out that politics wasn't one of those topics from which we would gain much pleasure or convince the other of much, so why bother?

And that's nice.

8 Gosh, I got bewillowed (which happens all the time, nbd) but against all odds, my last comment was kinda relevant to this topic:

Meijer is currently running an ad (valid this week starting today) for a $5 coupon on your next purchase after spending $25 on P&G products in the same visit.

How long does it take to spin up a promotion like that and print all the ads? Is that happenstance, coincidence, or enemy action?

You can talk those topics with a hardcore lib, but it is hard to talk about any of those with someone that is totalitarian without talk shifting to happy fun camps.

Maybe...
Except maybe the sex.. or booze... or philosophy... and maybe any car that is not electric.

18 My daughters are lefties.. but.. not far-left.

Mostly we don't talk politics, by mutual agreement.. however, after a few glasses of wine on Thanksgiving.. well.. it's hard not to. But they usually cut it short if I start ranting..

Their friends, however, are far far lefties.. whenever we attend a get together at my younger daughter's house, I keep it zipped.

They are all wonderful kids.. good family people with their own kids and a lot of them are musicians, so there's more than enough to talk about without getting into politics.

20 I have very few conservative friends.

Frankly, most of the "conservatives" I know are actually either Anarcho-libertarians or just goofy contrarians.

But the liberals I know are basically of one of two stripes:

- The "hey man, liberalism is about being nice and sharing, and conservatism is about being greedy and mean and racist". And I can typically disabuse them of that notion, at least on broad-brush, political philosophy kind of issues. Which tends to lead to nice conversations.

- The hard, hard, "Marx didn't go far enough" Leftist Communist collectivist type, who has a deep enough grounding in the philosophy to recognize the so-called "left" in America (Democrats And The Media (tm)) as not really left-wing at all but simple barbaric opportunists masquerading as "of the people". Which leads to some very fun conversations as well.

21 I had a conversation with a hard core lefty about the Gillette thing. He didn't like my take.

I had another conversation with another hard core lefty about it. She and I agreed that the Proctor and Gamble people are NOT to be trusted as arbiters of social engineering.

There's opportunities for common ground to be had, with many of the otherwise reasonable lefties we encounter. Can we turn them into full fledged conservos? Probably not, but it's worth having some of these conversations, with SOME of the people we otherwise disagree with.

During the midterms she was telling me a vote for any republican is a vote for one-party facist rule..and that in Venzuela, they were just facists masquerading as liberals. I finally told her she and I will never, ever be able to have a political discussion on this, and that we will always disgree.

At the end of the day, when you walk with the setting sun at your back, your shadow is in front of you, wide and tall. Giving the impression that one is bigger then they really are. But it's an illusion.

These are the leftists right now. Through the power of a complicit media, amateur polling, the FaceBooks and Googles cutting off conservative points of view, they think they are bigger then they really are. But the sun is setting behind them. Perhaps even, on them, if events in France are any gauge. Which I definitely think they are.

They assume that conservatives are some tiny little group. But we're still the majority at around 40%. Liberals are maybe 25%. But they're noisy little fvcks.

i think there have been comments here elsewhere on this, but what the hell is johnny walker doing sponsoring the women's march? why? does their market research show women are a growth segment of whiskey drinkers? are feminists in the boardroom? after 200 years of no particular political affiliation they go activist left (they're producing "resistance" posters) and possibly alienate half their customers.

81 There is leftist and then there is squishy liberal, vote-Dem- because-my family-always-has people who are too lazy to rethink their politics. They think it's "nicer" to be liberal because everyone on TV says so. I used to try to convert, but I haven't had success because they are emotionally attached to their politics and simply don't want to consider that they may be wrong. You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. But I can get along with those people because there are plenty of other things in life to talk about. Hard core lefty ideologues are another thing entirely. But they wouldn't want to hang around with me and vice versa.

Because it hasn't been ruined by capitalism. Although the usual phrase is a place hasn't been ruined by tourism, but they obviously couldn't say that, as they were tourists.

I suspect part of that was Cuba's sunny climate, which is kind of uplifting. East Berlin was dull, gray, decrepit, full of bombed out buildings from WWII, with everybody walking around looking - and acting - like they'd just come out of a divorce hearing. I think being able to see the happy, prosperous people in West Berlin a few hundred yards away generated a lot of the bad feeling.

127 it all depends ... sure it is nice to ignore politics, talk about "real life", and participate in real life.

But there is coming the time (or did we pass it sometime in the last 25 years?) ... a time is coming where anyone supporting the tyranny must be confronted. Obama suggested his fellow travelers "get in their face". And to propel his (or his puppet masters') communist/globalist overthrow of America ... he needed aggressive people to get good people fired/expelled/investigated for failing to submit ... and that has worked, they own much of society.

So there is a breaking point even with the "more civil SJWs" ... where they demand the Boy Scouts be changed, or that you use the xe pronoun, or that the school needs to teach Gore's AGW as real science. There is that point (2009?) where the nice liberal that supports those things is doing massive harm ... as with the coup against Trump.

So it depends, but quietly accepting the overthrow of America is not a very good compromise to attain "peace" with the local SJW "jihadist". The important things in routine life will soon become cold comfort, if we let them take our guns, or form their global currency/government, and it will (before that) be the time to not be nice to any that casually support the tyrants that are destroying our heritage.

"Meijer is currently running an ad (valid this week starting today)
for a $5 coupon on your next purchase after spending $25 on PG
