An 8-year-old North Carolina boy who received a devastating and unexpected diagnosis of glioblastoma while visiting family in Utah over the holidays has now been reunited with his beloved dog thanks to the kindness of a complete stranger. Perryn Miller and his family are from North Carolina but were in Utah for Christmas. During their trip, the boy was informed he was suffering from Stage 4 glioblastoma multiforme — an aggressive, cancerous tumor often found in the brain or spine — after a severe headache landed him in a local hospital. At the time, Perryn was told the tumor found in his brain required immediate surgery. He is now recovering, and the Miller family, whose home was destroyed during Hurricane Florence and has not yet been repaired, plans to stay in the Beehive State while Perryn undergoes additional treatment.

I don't mean to be an a-hole. It's great that he was given the one comfort of his dog given what he was going through. The people who drove him there did a wonderful deed. But I find it depressing. Psychological condition can influence health - maybe the dog will help him recover. But until he does, I can't feel good about it. We have all this technology that can change genes and cultivate bacteriophage viruses that destroy harmful bacteria. But we still cannot destroy these cells.

I haven't seen the new Gilette ads. I'm sure that they've been linked, but I have no desire to watch them. The Gilette ad that I *have* seen a lot of recently was about a dad raising his two sons right. And because of the influence of that dad, only having one hand wasn't enough to stop one of those sons from becoming a professional football player.
So I'm seeing that ad, and thinking that it's a pretty cool ad. And then I start hearing that they're pulling stupid nonsense in another new ad.

I was curious. So, I up on that stuff and "got smart" on Dueling. First of all, you can't ever hold public office, or be a judge or anything like that, in the State of Kentucky if you've ever been a Principal or Second in a Duel.
The challenged chooses the weapons - swords or pistols. He can challenge you in writing, or throw a glove down. And, you guys need to immediately appoint a second or seconds, to act on your behalf. There are some contraptions made to use old mechanical typewriters as keyboards. It's an involved job, but you rig a USB interface and rig the key arms to strike a plate and complete a circuit.

What's old is new again. When the first front-panel /home brew computers became affordable, printers were not. The 'In' thing to do was build a board covered with solenoids, that fit over a Selectric keyboard, then kludge an interface that allowed you to drive the solenoids from the printer port.
The solenoids, of course, drove the keys.

Because we are in a conservative sun-belt community that is full of blue-haired FoxNewsWatching widows, the population jacked up in the snowbird season by grey haired oldies wearing shorts over white socks in velcro tan walking tennies, and here sits a Starbucks in a quiet neighborhood shopping plaza.
It has been there for at least eight years, does not have a drive-up window, and almost all of the neighborhood locals are retired.
A slow steady drizzle of business, but no upticks at morning drive time, and never seen inside: hipster douchebags of either sex.
Do they have a policy of never admitting an error, and never closing a store, no matter what?

It's set in a neighborhood, a middle class one, in Mexico City, the neighborhood's name being Roma. A philandering doctor and his wife and two kids are tended to by their maid and cook, a couple of Mixtec girls, who live in quarters above the garage bay of the city house they all share.
The central character of the film is the maid, whose boyfriend knocks up and then ghosts her when he finds out.
The maid character hits all the victim buttons for the NYT, who calls the actress's performance the finest of all in 2018. She's a she, she's knocked up, she's a stubby Aztec that looks about like 95 percent of the central american female caravan marchers, and she rises above all this (the baby's stillborn) so she can smile at the end.

Why do you assume the store is not profitable? A crowded SBUX doesn't mean it's making money. Someone buying 1 cup of coffee and then spending 4 hours using the wifi isn't the ideal customer. It's the old lady who buy a cup of cofee and a bagel and leaves.

I'll preface my comment by saying my education is in finance and a good portion of my career was as well. But I don't get why people pay investment advisors. In the aggregate, they don't do any better than picking stocks randomly.
Best investment strategy is pick 2 or 3 no load, ultra cheap index funds. S&P500, Dow30, Dow100, Nasdaq, Russell, etc. Over the long run very few people beat the indexes. So why pay someone to do what you can do yourself for free?
Part of it I think is fear because people think
"oh I don't know anything about stocks, so I have to hire an expert". Well the dirty secret is that even the experts have no fucking clue. Ask 100 IAs about Stock X, 50 will say buy, 50 will say sell. It's an educated guess at best, a flip of a coin at worst. And yet they take a chink of your portfolio every year for that "expertise".

Anyone can pick stocks in an up market, what they are really good at is a down market. The trades are cheap, as they trade in a Charles Schwab and Fidelity accounts. I have invested in my own investment accounts, did ok. Yes, the WSJ proved your point repeatedly with the experts against the darts. It's really not the way I want to spend my time and energy.

Of late, keyboard and mouse offerings have become absolute crap in my opinion. Microsoft hardware used to make some pretty good keyboards and mice. Now, it's flimsy, trendy, and overpriced crap.
I've got two PS/2 MS keyboards that I use on both my desktops, but the one on what used to be my main machine (the new screamer is rapidly becoming the main machine for me now) is getting worn out.
Now, I managed to get 3 of the old mice, wireless optical, older that used a big transmitter rather than the dinky dongles. I'm down to just one left.
I needed one for the new screamer, and I found a Logitech that was acceptable. Barely.
I don't want ergonomic and all these crazy designs.

First off, don't worry about selling in down markets. It's impossible to predict bottoms. Dollar cost average into index funds. Put it on auto pilot for 30 years. Don't worry about up or down markets, in the long run it doesn't matter. Trying to time a top or a bottom is virtually impossible. You may get lucky once or twice but, long run, nobody can do it.

I would like to see some custom shop "retro-ize" a PT Cruiser by grafting on the grille and headlights of a similarly-shaped late '30's car or pickup. And do the tail lights, and add running boards, too.

I'm an old dog. Perhaps if I'd learned to type on one of the curved LSD-tripping keyboards, I'd do all right. But my brain is burned with flat, straight keys. I'll miss like a hell with the curved ones.
I never had any formal typing training, but after 30 years, the QWERTY layout is burned in muscle memory. I couldn't draw the layout to save my life, but my fingers know where to go.
With a curved keyboard, my fingers go to the wrong place.

I respect your option, and really do appreciate them. In the grand scheme of things we are better off letting someone else mange them for what amounts to a rounding error. We live off investments. Primarily dividend and interest, we require X am mint a year to live off of, its his job to balance the investments to produce that. Other than that he and the cpa can discuss offsetting capital gains with capital losses. And my wife can deal with the both of them. I didn't quit gainful employment to sit at a desk, talk on the phone, or attend meetings.

Heh. I found an even better loophole on a project. I was 300ish miles away from the client. Same thing, I could expense miles or bill for a flight. I kinda did both. Flights were about $200 roundtrip but at 55 cents a mike, 600 miles of mileage was $350. So I flew, expensed miles and made $150 a week.
The downside to that is you don't have a car and you can't rent one since you're expensing mileage. But the client was downtown so I didn't want a car while there anyway and the train from the airport was $5 and a 20 min ride.

The exam expects you to Figure It Out, based on the PMI Way Of Thinking. Apparently there are no right answers, only wrong ones.
A friend was, in his Air Force capacity, in charge of the AF1 advance team. Serious responsibility.
Retired from that, and failed the PMP exam.
Something is wrong here. I ain't skeered, just don't understand the rules of the game.

he was a fireman in dallas (12 years) who noticed an ad for extras for a movie "paper moon". he went out and among 400 others got picked, got a role as a hotel clerk and ended up with the 6th largest role in the movie. 3 months later he got a call at the fire house from a mel brooks who wanted him for his new movie. he hung up thin king it was another prank. then richard pryor called, then brooks again, then bogdanovich from paper moon telling him to take the job. so they fly him out to hollywood and they tell him they rewrote the role for him but he still turned them down - not enough money! he wanted as much as he earned as a fireman in a year ($12,000). he ended uo getting $25,000 and began a long career of over 90 roles.

I've found that the best foremen can be ferocious dicks, and the only way to not have that happen is to make sure the project is as you describe. In the end, on time and under budget is what everyone wants. If the job was bid correctly, and workers are competent, the supplies show up on time, the foreman is less of a dick.

1. at full strength, they will demineralize your teeth, so drinking them straight from the bottle all the time is a *bad* thing. and rinse your mouth thoroughly with plain water if you do.

2. if you drink them full strength, without additional water, you run the very good chance of actually DEhydrating yourself, and become a heat casualty. this is because the level of NaCl and KCl in them is sufficient to cause the body to draw H2O out of the cells in an attempt to sufficiently dilute the incoming electrolytes, which in turn causes you to fall out, defeating the alleged purpose of the beverage.
take away: drink several times (3-5) MOAR water than you do either beverage, thus protecting your teefus AND the rest of you body. being a heat casualty can kill you, and once you've gone down once, you're at greater risk the entire rest of your life, same same with cold injuries.
pro tip: what i do is take the empty bottle from the previous flavor (i rotate 4 that i like the taste of on a regular schedule) and pour full strength ade into it, until it reaches the top of the 2nd bump (Powerade, find a similar point on your Gator bottle if you drink that Pepsi product) then fill to the rim with agua. repeat until new bottle is down to that point, then fill it with water, and repeat process. previous bottle goes in the recycling bin, to be turned in for beer money, with all the other CRV empties.

Minus 4 degrees on the F scale here.
Clear sky and the absence of water vapor in the atmosphere allows infrared to radiate out into space cooling the surface temperatures. It was a very pretty moonlight scene with the pale illumination reflecting off of the snow cover and the stars sparkling in the clear sky.
I have the furnace fired up, pumping CO2 into the atmosphere in an attempt to counteract this heat loss, to no avail. We need more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere so these cooling events don't happen to this degree.

I find it fairly disturbing at how people throw around way-down-the-road dates for anything with a uniformitarian pretext.
For example, the Global Warming crowd are talking about how life on Earth will end because of an annual 3mm rise of the oceans, or if life-giving CO2 reaches a certain level one hundred years from now.
Look at all of the much more life altering/destroying things that have taken place in recent years. We are just one stock market crash away from global poverty which is far more likely than "whole islands disappearing into the sea".
So when they talk about this-n-that twenty years from now, how do they even know that the US will not have fallen to current Venezuela levels?
With the current trend in colonization from turd world countries, what makes them think that our new neighbors won't have eaten out our substance, bankrupted our treasuries and savings and will have neither the money nor the vanity to use expensive and unreliable "renewables" but will continue to use the feces, tires and readily available vegetation and garbage to burn for heat and cooking?

I can quite understand people missing their dead loved ones-and I didn't read the whole thing so I don't know when the son died- but I don't want my deceased I loved ones to "always be with me" except as memorories. I want them to go on to the next stage of their journey instead of being tied to earth.

Oh, lin-duh, I feel for you. Have you seen an orthopedist for it?
Had a pinched nerve in my neck that started last month with excruciating pain and weakness in the arm to the point that I couldn't even hold my toothbrush with one hand. Pain is gone but I still have the numbness/tingling. Getting stronger with PT.
Take care of yourself and I hope it goes away soon.

I've been going to PT for about 2 months 2 times a week. It started with my lower back being out now we are at my neck... The neck thing is an old problem that improved except for a night here and there. I'm not having much weakness or actual pain, just that weird tingling and numbness.
