Easier Problem - Black To Play

20190112 - Problem 1.jpg
6k1/8/8/3bQ3/4n3/8/7P/5R1K b - - 0 1

1...Nf2+
2.Kg1 Nh3#

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20190112 - Problem 2.jpg
6rk/p6p/4PP2/8/2p4P/8/P2p4/6RK w - - 0 1

Sometimes, to get a good feel for the position, it's helpful to look at what the opposing side will do if it were their turn. In this case, if it were Black's move, the obvious choice would be 1...Rxg1+, followed by 2...d1Q and a won game. So, White needs to prevent this. This rules out any pawn move, such as 1.e7 or 1.f7. That leaves only rook moves, and the only good candidate moves are 1.Rd1 or 1.Rf1.

1.Rd1 is a defensive moves, and, as it turns out, it fails: 1.Rd1 c3 2.f7 c2 3.fxg8=Q+ Kxg8 4.Rg1+ Kf8 5.e7+ Kxe7 6.Kh2 d1=Q 7.Rxd1 cxd1=Q and wins.

Which leaves 1.Rf1! This is the only correct move.

1.Rf1! c3

If 1...Rd8 then 2.e7 d1=Q 3.Rxd1 Rxd1+ 4.Kg2 Re1 5.f7 h6 6.e8=Q+ Rxe8 7.fxe8=Q+ winning

2.f7 c2
3.fxg8=Q+ Kxg8
4.e7 d1=Q

And now, it's mate in 4:

5.e8=Q+ Kg7
6.Qf7+ Kh6
7.Qf6+ Kh5
8.Qg5#

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

105 More Challenging Problem.

White loses if he ignores:

1. any Rxg1+
2. Kxg2 d1=Q+

But he can avoid the first check with:

1. Kh2 Rxg1
2. f7 Rg8
3. e7 d1=Q
4. fxg8+ Kxg8
5. e8=Q+

White can probably draw now.

107 A week or two ago someone mentioned the country singer Suzy Bogguss. Hadn't listened to her for years. Checking Youtube I discovered one of her more recent albums "The American Folk Songbook". Traditional songs I grew up with like Shenandoah, Sweet Betsy from Pike, Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier, even Froggy Went A'courtin. The accompanying instruments were simple but effective. And the whole album is beautifully produced. You can hear every instument and the tone of her voice.

Those videos led to ones by Kathy Mattea, another golden voice and her sometimes funny and sometimes exciting or heart rending music. Just lovely. I've spent a fair amount of time with the Bose headset on enjoying it all.

BTW, I also started listening to Michael Martin Murphy who did "Wildfire" that all the girls swooned over. Years ago he switched to traditional cowboy songs. Great and fun music.

116 Watching the snow fall in NoVA and I just learned another hard lesson about Preventive Maintenance.

Tried to gas up the snowblower and there is a gas tank clean out valve assembly which appears to have gotten clogged and leaks like crazy. If I'd done this when the sun was shining (as and sane homeowner would have done), I sure I could have jury-rigged something or repaired or replaced it, but it is in an impossible spot to get to, and I don't want to take the blower into the garage to work on it because of the gas leak.
I think I will have to drive my truck down to the road, because I'm not able to tackle my driveway with a mere shovel.

Good thing I have some food (for both dog and me) and lots of beer in the house.

So last night we were talking in the ONT and I mentioned something I heard at Jim Sterling's about Bungie severing their links with ActivisionBlizzard, and going their own way on Destiny 2.

Then there was this comment, but I had trouble interpreting it:

Activision has other problems too. After they "bravely" decide to make another Overwatch chrarcter gay they've had a lawsuit filed against them in federal court for harassment and discrimination. Oh along with the controversy of "overwatch Ellie" a girl that had been recruited to a pro team and then it was revealed that she was actually a he after the sjw npc game journalists all wrote about how "she" was harassed for being a girl and didn't join the team.

124 Also, there seems to be a split between Obsidian and Bethesda. Bethesda are planning to publish "Starfield". But in the meantime, Bethesda pinched off "Fallout 76", a legendarily bad game. So nobody trusts Bethesda to do "Starfield" right.

Recently I hear that Obsidian are planning "The Outer Worlds". On the one hand, it has that tired "the corporaaations" meme. On the other hand... these days, I've grown to distrust the corporaaations myself.

So there's a chance The Outer Worlds could actually be good. I give Obsidian better odds than NuBethesda anyway.

Dang. You are right. I think moving the pawns in the opposite order. If Black tries to stop them from the 1st rank then they protect each other and he threatens mate with the f-pawn, viz:

1. Kh2 Rxg1
2. e7 Re1
3. f7 d1=Q
4. f8=Q#

The immediate d1=Q fails to Rxd1. Failing to attack the pawns loses:

1. Kh2 Rxg1
2. e7 d1=Q
3. e8=Q# (the f pawn guards g7).

So I think:

1. Kh2 Rxg1
2. e7 Rg8 (forced, see mates above)
3. f7
and so on as before.

So I think I just got the pawn move order wrong.

263 245 I have never really understood chess-and-dress post. Not that it matters. It's just, two topics that aren't related and neither of which is in my realm of interest.

Here is the backstory:

The chess thread was started because chess.

That's not a big topic of interest, so I decreed that the chess thread is open to any topic whatsoever.

And then two three 'ettes started long discussions about dresses.

So I decided to have a little fun with it and started putting in pics of attractive, conservative, not slutty, dresses that I thought would appeal to the 'ettes.

It's fun!

I have a friend in the NYC fashion industry. Big time.
(College roommate I see about once every 5 years, if that, but for some reason have kept in touch w/ for decades.)

She is, as you'd expect from her job/location, quite anti-Trump but completely exasperated by the US industry's treatment of Melania. And she says she is by no means alone in her frustration.

Now, I won't say she's been red-pilled exactly but she is MUCH more aware of the poison on the Left, the fanaticism and intolerance, the politicization of every damned thing.

I understand it. I want Trump to hold firm. Border security is a necessity. I don't think we'll see it. I mean, Trump could win in the end by getting the funding to build it. Its just that he will be relying on a Fed Bureaucracy that despises him and getting it built will slow to a crawl till the next administration that are Open Border zealots take over. Right now my concern is the lawlessness of are elections. The blatant cheating by the Dems is outrageous but nothing is being done.

1. Qxg8+ Nxg8
2. Nf7+ Kh7

Having a hard time with the other one. The only other opener that makes sense is 1. Nf7+, but 1... Kh7 puts the brakes on that. Black's bishop is double-defended so 2. Qxg8+ is a bad idea, and 2. Bf5+ just loses the bishop.

1. h7 looks menacing, but since it's not a check 1... Rxd1 will keep me too occupied to capitalize on it.

327 That's odd -- I came up with a completely different, third solution to the problem in the ad, which also gives a mate in three.
1. h7
This pawn is guarded by white's knight, so Black's king can't take it; and Black's bishop can't take it or even move, since doing so would discover a check by white's queen. So no matter what legal move black responds with, white will continue:
2. Pxg8(Q)+ Nxg8

This response by black is forced, since the new queen is doubly guarded. Then:

3. Qxg8#

Posted by: jdgalt at January 13, 2019 12:52 AM (3SFo/)

328 jdgalt, to achieve a mate in 3 you need to protect against black's threatened 1. ... Rxd1+. That requires either 1. Nc1 or a checking move. 1. h7 doesn't do either...
