The taxpayer-funded service “will mainly target Turkish and Arabic-speaking families” where children may be “flirting with extremism,” German newspapers report. The programs comes at a time when Chancellor Angela Merkel is allocating huge sums of public money in hopes of preventing the country’s growing Muslim population from becoming more radicalized. According to the German state broadcaster MDR, the government spent nearly €100 million on Islamist ‘de-radicalization’ programs in 2018. “Nobody knows if the money is put to meaningful use,” the broadcaster noted. Do you like being alone at times? Do you like driving off by yourself on occasion? Well so much for being by yourself in your car. This week at CES, the international consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, a host of startup companies will demonstrate to global automakers how the sensor technology that watches and analyzes drivers, passengers and objects in cars will mean enhanced safety in the short-term, and revenue opportunities in the future. Whether by generating alerts about drowsiness, unfastened seat belts or wallets left in the backseat, the emerging technology aims not only to cut back on distracted driving and other undesirable behavior, but eventually help automakers and ride-hailing companies make money from data generated inside the vehicle Well, well, well. This is a surprise. Southern Poverty Law Center is distancing itself from the Women's March. No pink pussy hats for them. The Southern Poverty Law Center will not partner with the Women’s March this year, The Daily Beast has confirmed. Jen Fuson, a spokeswoman for the SPLC, said “other projects were a priority,” but added they would continue to be involved in marches at the local level in areas where they have offices. She burnt bridges at Fox. Looks like NBC bridges are aflame to. Now that she is out at NBC where does Mygyn Kelly go? Megyn Kelly is officially done with NBC after months of negotiating, the network announced Friday night. “The parties have resolved their differences, and Megyn Kelly is no longer an employee of NBC,” an NBC News statement said. Kelly was roughly halfway through a three-year deal for a whopping total of $69 million. Another Democrat to run for POTUS. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) is expected to be the 197th candidate to run. But she’s burnt some bridges too, like some of the other candidates. That’s 4 if you count Warren as officially in – Warren, Gillibrand, Castro and Gabbard. It’s going to be a lot before we’re through. Via Buzzfeed: New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on Saturday signaled to group of about 20 influential women that she will run for president, according to a person familiar with the meeting. Gillibrand made her intentions clear, said the source, who asked not to be identified to speak about the event. Gillibrand said that she needed their help if they would offer it to her. The closed-door gathering was attended by the feminist Gloria Steinem, the source said. A second source reached by BuzzFeed News confirmed the meeting took place but would not elaborate on what was said. What will her campaign slogan be? I have a vagina vote for me? Boo-hoo. Newly elected congress critters don't get plum committee positions. ‘Heartbreak’ on Capitol Hill: Ocasio- Cortez has been in Congress for one whole week… so of course she thought she was entitled to sit on a powerful committee where she could push her pipe dreams of free…everything! Because remember: facts don’t matter… when you’re morally right. Or something. And poor Rashida, who somehow confused having a big mouth with being an influential leader. Author of "Dracula" Bram Stoker was quite the fan of Walt Whitman. “How sweet a thing it is for a strong healthy man with a woman’s eye and a child’s wishes to feel that he can speak to a man who can be if he wishes father, and brother and wife to his soul.” A quarter century before his now-classic epistolary novel Dracula catapulted Abraham “Bram” Stoker (November 8, 1847–April 20, 1912) into literary celebrity, the twenty-four-year-old aspiring author used the epistolary form for a masterpiece of a different order. Still months away from his first published short story, he composed a stunning letter of admiration and adoration to his great literary idol: Walt Whitman (May 31, 1819–March 26, 1892). Before going forward with that degree in chemistry. Take Cooking 101. But can a lack of cooking knowledge and skills hinder development in other areas? A new experiment at the Imperial College London seems to suggest such is the case. The school has created a course, “Introduction to Culinary Practice,” and is requiring its first-year chemistry students to take it. Such a move is being made because instructors want their students learning to follow written instructions, be accurate and consistent, maintain a clean work environment, and receive “constructive criticism.” Summarizing these intentions, Guardian columnist Rhik Samadder notes: The idea behind this course is that the practical skills required by cooking will be invaluable to a new generation of scientists. An update on Mr. Empire, with thanks again for all the prayers and thoughts! The medics arrived less than half an hour after I called 911, a wonder given how far out in the boonies we live. EMTs arrived first, and they called an ambulance, while I called my sister and BIL, but they were still in church, and didn't return the call until a bit after noon. I asked for a ride to the hospital, since I was mentally in no shape to drive. Sister arrived about 1300 Central, BIL to meet us there.
We got to the hospital while Mr. E was still in the emergency room, about 1330 Central. I took care of the paperwork, having gathered his meds and grabbed his wallet (with his insurance info). Not too long after that, the ER doc came in and questioned us about what had happened. He couldn't remember anything, and I didn't see it. They'd already taken X-rays and done a CAT scan of his head, finding nothing like blood clots or broken bones. But he was severely dehydrated to the point of confusion and being barely able to speak -- not very coherently, at that. BP was also up, since he hadn't taken (been able to take?) his morning meds. There was something I didn't understand about muscle deterioration from being in one position too long, as well. Also a possible infection and strain or sprain of his right arm. So they're going to keep him in the hospital for at least two days, then a possibility of some time in rehab. So not as bad as I feared when I first found him (was sure, with the incoherent speech and weakness, that it was a stroke). Not that the other problems aren't bad, but less bad than I'd feared. This is the hospital where I spent last Christmas with dehydration and a UTI, so I'm confident he'll get good treatment from a truly excellent staff -- though the food there leaves a lot to be desired! We picked up Carmen's new house mate today. Honey is a rescue Borzoi, between 8-10 years old. She's had a hard, knock-around life and several surgeries after she was taken in. She and Carmen seem to accept each other but right now she seems a little uncertain about us. Honey has never been around men much, so I'll be taking her down to the pen to exercise (leash-broken, thank God) and giving her treats and dinner. We had her loose in the house; she relaxed and slept on a cushion on the floor. Thanks to the National Borzoi Rescue Foundation for bringing this sweetie to our attention and for giving us the opportunity to give Honey her forever home. I was in the Chicago area this weekend to visit friends and family. The area I was in (N-NW burbs) got about 1-2 inches of snow Saturday and Saturday evening -- enough to be scenic without being too much of a travel problem.
This morning I was in Evanston, near the Northwestern University campus. It would have been a great day to shoot Christmas card pictures because the sun was out, there was fresh snow everywhere and lots of elegant brick buildings, landscaping, etc. covered with it. Some houses still had Christmas wreaths and other decorations up. I know that area is really pricey and very much a liberal college town but on a day like today I could see why people want to live there.... Mitt doesn't understand the legalities or realities of "national emergencies" as they have been used lo these many decades. The only reason to un-prefer use of same for urgent border security measures is that it will not provide as solid and defensible a basis as legislated/appropriated measures, when the alien freaks hollowing out the country again gain power. Impossible to believe that is Mitt's concern.
But Mitt really has beclowned himself to a stunning degree, not 2 weeks into his Senate career. Really a ridiculous figure, with the political sense of an Obama or Clinton (who regularly beclowned themselves, though mostly survived thanks to a "press" that vigorously covered for them, and a base of alien freaks who didn't mind or understand). I don't trust the paper receipt idea. It seems to me it's just another step down the daisy path to the so-called paperless society. It provides the government with a record of everything you've spent, even if you use cash. The government wants to know what books you read, they don't have to get a warrant to search a book store's receipts, they just look at a dupe of your receipt. Do they want to know how many boxes of what kind of ammunition you bought last year? Just look at the dupes of your credit card receipts.
It's the same reason I will not have an Amazon Dot in my house or activate Alexa or Seri. I know it's a losing fight when I use my tablet, smart phone, and debit card every day. But I don't have to enable them by granting them even more access to my privacy than they already have. Posted by: Captain Josepha Sabin at January 13, 2019 11:02 PM (urhTh) 215

Well, I've been reading a blog of an executive director of a small non-profit in Seattle, and I have found a new frontier of employment discrimination.
Progressive California and Oregon have already banned asking a job applicant's salary history (the theory apparently is that women and minorities are worse at negotiating salary than evil white males, so you can level the playing field by suppressing all salary history data). And, of course, you shouldn't ask about criminal history unless it is "relevant to the job" (hint: the fact that the job applicant was convicted for strangling his girlfriend is not "relevant", unless he did it at work). But there is a new frontier - you are no longer supposed to ask the applicant for their educational background. (The blogger does admit that if you are hiring a lawyer or other regulated professional, you might ask for evidence of a law or other appropriate professional degree - but otherwise, no.) Evaluating people, in part, on their educational background, is bad and discriminatory, and should be banned. I think the theory is that people should be hired purely on the basis of how many intersectionality points they have (straight white males at the end of the line, of course). The more information you can suppress about job candidates, the easier it is to simply rely on skin color, gender, sexual orientation, etc., to determine who gets hired. While I'm no admirer of FDR, it has been reported that he would listen thoughtfully to the sundry people passing through his office, nodding his head as they spoke.
People would leave convinced that they had successfully moved his opinion. I think the theory is that people should be hired purely on the basis of how many intersectionality points they have (straight white males at the end of the line, of course). The more information you can suppress about job candidates, the easier it is to simply rely on skin color, gender, sexual orientation, etc., to determine who gets hired.

What's this latest Trump "outrage" about? That he went to "extreme lengths to keep a meeting with Vladimir Putin secret?"
Trump isn't disclosing details of his talks with Putin to American "senior officials", who would then leak all the details to us. It's long been the case in CA that no small business that can't afford discrimination lawsuits hires anything but family, or close friends of family.
With the New Year, Oregon now has a "pay parity" law, where you can't discriminate in pay against about a dozen protected classes. You need to do a "pay equity analysis" to demonstrate this "equity" at least once every three years, or you can get sued for punitive damages. There is **no lower limit** to this law - if your firm hires two people, you are subject to it. The local paper cheerily noted that since governmental agencies and the local electric utility can comply with the new law, it obviously won't be a problem for smaller firms. Meanwhile, Portland millennials whine that local firms only want to temporarily hire contractors and consultants - they don't want to hire new permanent employees. I wonder why. The Brits have a thousand of such expressions, which naive Americans take at face value until they wise up. A friend was exhorted by a Brit, "Oh, X, do feel free to use [some facility he'd already used]." I had to explain to him that the point of that statement wasn't its superficial meaning, but rather that someone considered his use of the facility to be worthy of comment, an observation that he should ponder, namely, that they were pissed off that he'd used it. While working yesterday I listened to a radio interview on some health program with a researcher/professor from Emory University School pf Health. So full of talking point about women's health, violence against women, gender identification, women of color, even used expressions like problematic and toxic masculinity, largely in the content of human rights and public health. And the predator Kavanaugh and the attack on Dr. Ford (She was like a walking left-wing narrative generator.) So strident annoying strident. Kept saying "We know that..." (Example: We know that 1 in three women are assaulted) and "What we need to do is...." Also talked about child sex trafficking and what a problem it has become over the past 10 years or so. Decent point point but not a word about who is doing that trafficking or it's link to illegal immigration.

As for Dr Ford...where the fuck did she go? Funny how when the national stage went away she did to. Not just go away, but absolutely no reporting. It's interesting that she probably received death threats -- because it seems everyone gets death threats in this day and age -- but there's no reports of her going into hiding or any death threats. A good question is why? Perhaps they don't want to discourage in any way the next person from inventing some memories and grabbing the national stage and derailing a Supreme Court nomination. Me 262 A1-a/U3 FE4012. Named "Pick II" by its Watson's Whizzers pilot. The Flying Heritage Collection has bought it from Planes of Fame and is restoring it to flight worthy status with plans to use the original Jumo 004B engines. Good luck with that. Tendency to overheat and catch fire on the ground. Slow throttle response. Maybe 25 hours per engine. And only the port engine has a hydraulic pump. Posted by: votermom But the poop has so much fiber it can be made into fashionable clothing. And the farts can be turned into Gaia saving dreams.... Posted by: Bruce at January 14, 2019 06:56 AM (8ikIW) 450

Posted by: saf at January 14, 2019 06:37 AM (5IHGB) Three shells? Toilet paper will be next on their list. They'll start by requiring only single-ply paper made of recycled office paper be sold...and when that doesn't reduce the rolls of TP sold in CA, they'll ration it, so people can use only 2 squares of TP on average per dump. I don't seem to recall anyone in DC feeling sorry when I lost my last full-time job exactly 10 years ago, and I have been struggling ever since having used up a considerable part of my retirement nest egg to live on
