We're set to get another dog on Sunday. Carmen, who is almost 11, is a house dog and since her sister Aida died we've had a couple of her daughters to keep her company, but they're too rambunctious for her to put up with.
A breeder in the state has dementia and can no longer take care for her dogs. Our national rescue organization has stepped in to find foster homes for them. We volunteered to give an older one a forever home as well as a house companion for Carmen. We'll take Carmencita along to see whether they'll get along.

From a recent book thread, re: Neal Stephenson writing the entirety of the Baroque Cycle trilogy by hand, with pen and ink:
"The manuscript of The Baroque Cycle was written by hand on 100% cotton paper using three different fountain pens: a Waterman Gentleman, a Rotring, and a Jorg Hysek. It was then transcribed, edited, formatted and printed using emacs and TeX. When it was totally finished, the TeX version of of the ms. was converted to Quark XPress format using an emacs LISP program written by the author."
All 17,000 pages of the final draft are on display at the Museum of Science Fiction in Seattle.

When I was in HS I cut some quills down to pen nibs, it was very instructive as to why we write cursive the way we do.
A ball-point is like using a hard crayon, you have to put pressure right down on the tip, and you have to do it from above.
A steel nib requires a softer touch, and you have to come in from the side, and hold the nib at just the right angle, depending on the type of nib. You have to glide it and you have to be very aware of how yo are doing your strokes to keep from blotting or picking up paper fibers in the nib.
Dad learned to write with a dip pen and he was kind of excited when I told him that.
My GF also learned to write with a dip pen, and she said her hardest thing to learn was to use just the right amount of pressure to glide the pen on the paper.

We did that last night. We started going thru old photos and had 4 big posters of pictures of her at the memorial. The biggest hit? The picture of mom holding a HUGE brassiere. We were in the library one day and opened up a puzzle box only to find.. not puzzles pieces but a big fucking bra. I laughed my ass off and mom is holding it up with a WTF look on her face. My back yard backs up to a Burger King. After twenty years, I have to be pretty damn desperate to go there -- not to mention I don't speak a word of Spanish.
We just don't eat out much any more. Once the XO gets home from work, that's it for him. He's done for the day. He watches a bunch of terminally stupid YouTube videos, takes a shower, watches more tv, and then goes to bed. Every now and again, I'll go get something. The only thing I can drag him out of the house for is tacos. The ones at our favorite place have to be eaten right away. By the time I get them home, they are lukewarm and blah.
Tomorrow night will be better. I have a package of boneless pork chops. Tonight was simply one of those nights when the leftovers need to be taken care of.

Maybe you had a bad experience, but our local Five Guys is very good. The toppings are fresh, the fries are good (not the best, but not the worst either), the service is excellent, and everything is made right in front of you so you don't have to wonder what happened to it behind the scenes.

Funny thing: the old door had a bit of a bind, because the tweak to the rear body tightened up the opening a bit (a previous owner hit a snow bank or something, messing up both left doors and the back cab corner).
And the new door had the exact same degree of bind in it, which speaks pretty well of Ford's manufacturing tolerances in body stampings. I used a hammer and block of wood to knock the door frame back a bit, and now the new door opens and closes easily.
When I get the front door on, that will leave me with a 3" by 12" strip of rear cab corner on which to do body work.
And the new doors are both painted silver, so match the body; no repaint needed.
This will add hugely to the resale value of this truck.

Yeah, they suck. Too dry, too skinny, too tasteless. Five Guys fries are the best I have had from any of the big chains: chipped on site from fresh potatoes, never frozen, and cooked in peanut oil. I'd prefer lard, but peanut oil is OK. Outside of the fry is browned, but the inside has the taste and texture of a baked potato.

The PC food police forced them to remove the beef tallow fat to cook them from every chain, as far as I can tell.
I have given up on fries and no longer eat them, because they fatten me up like a steer a couple weeks before slaughter.
OK, maybe 3 or 4 times a year. It was tough to ween off of them completely.

I have heard that that is true a few places abroad. That is just wrong. Those fried pies were great. Why would a place choose to replace a better product with one that is obviously worse and will not sell as well? I know , they got bullied by the food police. I think I remember there were lawsuits over the hot filling too about the same time they started suing the place for selling, gasp, hot coffee.

I worked at a couple of fast food joints years back. Every time we changed the oil, we did one at a time during a slow time just so we could let the new oil get hot enough. Then we'd do the second fryer and let the oil get hot enough.
From what I understand, changing the oil is different these days. Instead of physically removing the fryers pans and baskets, dumping the hot, dirty oil into the oil barrel, then scrubbing the pans by hand before replacing them in the fryer and filling them with fresh oil, it's automatic. You push a button, the old oil drains out, then the pan fills itself with new oil. I suspect that Smashburger had initiated the cycle during a busy time and started using it too soon.

The literally no name no sign A-frame diner in Dayton Washington has the last best old cafe food on the planet. The bacon double cheeseburger hand cut onion rings and chocolate fudge shake are literally to die for. There's a counter and a few chairs and tables inside but mostly it's a drive up. Strictly word of mouth as far as I know and I've seen the line 10 cars long waiting to order. You can get a very respectable amount of food for $10.

Yes, I have. About six times a year I am trapped, starving, in a location that only has a McDonald's. I have had the quarter pounder, the Big Mac, and a couple of their breakfast offerings. Everything has been uniformly awful, and looked like someone had sat on it before they handed it to me through the window. Their fries and hash browns are soggy, and even their coffee has gotten worse. Sometimes, just for fun, they give me something other than what I ordered, which of course I don't find out until I am five miles down the road.
A quarter pounder, by the way, has nothing but ketchup, mustard, and two tiny pieces of onion on it. That is like something out of the 1950's, and scarcely edible. I won't even order one (minus the condiments, of course) to feed to one of my dogs...for that treat we make the longer trip to Burger King and I buy their basic cheeseburger, plain. Which doesn't look like it has been used for sitting practice.
Give me Five Guys with fresh toppings, two better burger patties, and excellent service any day of the week. As a backup, I'll go to Burger King. But McDonald's has only been a last resort under extreme time pressure, and now to avoid them I'm starting to pack my own PB&J sandwiches.

The one down the street from me did something odd during their renovation. They put in a sliding full sized door for the register person to hand you food in your car. Oddest thing I have seen.

Gotta admit, I have one of those stories myself. Went with several friends to another friends place outside of Lauderdale for Spring Break. There was a new place 20 minutes away everyone was raving about called Subways.
Myself and a buddy checked into it as a franchise back in '84. $40k plus buildout back then. 1984. There was one in the entire Chicago metro area at that time. Between us we had half the cash to do this.

Chik-fil-A is bit different. The "franchise" is about 10 to 12K. But you don't own the restaurant, just the right to run it.
Also, you have to go through a qualification process and they prefer people with experience running a restaurant or other business where you have to deal with scheduling and payroll.

To this day I am grateful that I didn't invest in a Quizno's franchise. The sandwiches were better quality than Subway, but the corporate structure turned out to be terrible and I think they're almost all gone now.
My go-to outlet for sub-style sandwiches these days is Jersey Mike's. Four times as far away as the Subway, but eight times as good. Do the math. Uh, subtract two, carry the one...is this base eight or base ten? Anyway, the #13, Mike's Way, is amazing. Maybe I should look into a franchise and put it closer to my house...

A lot of hype there. It has an 88 watt-hour internal battery. At a nominal 12 volts, that's about 8 amp-hours.They claim it will deliver peak current of 4000 amps. At that current level, the battery would have enough jam to put out for a whole 7 seconds.
But those cables and clamps would never sustain a current of 4000 amps, anyway. Nor do you need that much; 400 amps should crank any vehicle that runs a 12 volt system. And you might get a minute total at that draw rate.
And they claim that most cars will jump start in 3 seconds? Well, if the only thing wrong is a dead battery because the lights were left on, or the alternator died, etc. A car with a battery frozen in -30 weather is going to need a lot more cranking.
FWIW, I have seen and used booster packs, and they seem to get the job done if "dead battery" is the only fault involved. But so will booster cables. I own several sets of booster cables; I don't own any booster packs, and have no real desire to get one.

A legal malpractice firm. It is a thing. When my Mom passed, our attorney was notified shortly after that my long deceased Dad's part of the family owned 20% of a farm the family wanted to sell. Worth about $50k total to our side of the family.
Estate lawyer decided, on his own, to bill the estate of my Mom for a 3 day weekend he spent "investigating" a place in upper Michigan. Billed for every minute he even thought about it through his 56 hour@ $300/hour weekend.
One threat from me to follow through on this got the scumbag to drop it down to 20 hours, which was twice as much as he deserved.

it gets better: these days, everything is digital: x-rays, you name it, so the cost of each shot is infinitesimal, other than the labor cost of the actual operator directing the machine, and the radiologist interpreting the results.
the machines are a sunk cost, necessary for the VA to perform it's mission. maintenance costs, etc, are also there, but it's necessary overhead for a service they can either provide internally, at minimal cost, or pay for from an outside source.
to say we "lose money" if they don't two different procedures on differnt days is bureaucratic BS.
i suspect they want to pad their totals, so they can support request for MOAR staff, bigger budgets, etc.
that's likely also the reason that, when i refill my meds, i get at least 3 packages, when they would all fit into one.
talk about fraud, waste and abuse.

I posted this the other day.
I will try to ad some life here by being topical.
So, this Kevin Hart business. I don't associate myself with his past
comments, nor do I know them in detail. But I did respect the guy for
standing up against the daily internet mob. I thought he was out of the
Oscars and I even considered seeing his latest film as a show of
support. Not for his opinions, but for standing up for himself. At some
point someone has to say enough.
Now it looks like they are
putting him through the wringer of apology and contrition which will end
in his hosting the Oscars after all. I could be wrong about this, but
it looks to be heading that way. In the end, the angriest and loudest
get their way, just ask pretty much any corporation that got on the
wrong side of the internet mob.

After looking into it further, I think his apology was warranted. His views were odd and even joking about violence in this context was really weird imo. I am glad my parents were not obsessed with such things. Also, I really don't care who hosts the Oscars, that shit show lost all meaning to me at least a decade ago. I think they should bring back Billy Crystal so that they at least don't embarrass themselves further.
My prediction was wrong, Hart will not be hosting. He even stood up to Michael Strahan yesterday while being pestered over and over. No way he backs down from that. But again, I think the original apology was correct, if not required.
Hart seems affable enough and certainly a lot of people love his comedy. I realized by looking into this, that I have had basically no exposure to his comedy. No big deal there, different strokes for different folks. But there are far more egregious examples of the right think gestapo coming down on regular people. For me, Kevin Hart is not the right hill to die on. If Hollyweird wants to take him on, that is wrong in many ways. But they are his people, he is one of them.

I stay away from the MFM news and only look at the local news. Fires, traffic accidents, occasional robbery, shootings, all normal stuff. I can handle that, but not the talking heads. Heh, yeah. Republicans seem to bat about .500 when it comes to SC justices. I don't follow the court closely, but Roberts doesn't stand out as some great originalist to me. Someone recently advocated Thomas retiring. I am not sure about the context but my initial reaction was "wth?" Are not Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, and hopefully Kavanaugh the only conserves we have? And really, only Alito and Thomas have been proven over time. That is two.

I am no expert on this at all, and don't claim to be one. But from what I have heard much of the recycing ethos is a scam. People like us are conditioned to wash and clean bottles etc and put them in the recycling bin. But so much of recycling is overstated and the companies involved in it are all for profit in the end. My point is when we take all the time to make sure a bottle is sparkling clean, all we are doing it increasing the profit for a company that could clean them themselves. We are doing half their labor, and have been conditioned to do it "for the earth".
I do this as well so I am not standing apart here. But it is funny how we have been conditioned to do these things without really thinking it through. Would you work for free for other companies? And is glass recycling any better than simply reusing bottles like they do in Mexico and used to do here? Remember getting change for bottle deposits?

We use the single stream recycling method here at stately VIA Manor.
Purchases stream in the front door.
Garbage streams out the back door into the trash.
Occasionally, if we have large amounts of cardboard, or gallon disposable plastic jugs, I will make a dump Run.
Other than that....it streams in the front, and streams out the back.

I personally don't think she is going to last much longer. She already beat cancer twice and literally never missed a day of work in 25 years.

The vegan burger idea just baffles me. If you don't want to eat meat, why try to pretend that's what you're doing? I had an aunt who had the only sane reason for being a vegetarian I've ever encountered: she just didn't like it. My father says that even as a child she'd get in trouble over this, just as I did over lima beans.
OK, I get that. Don't see how it could be, but hell, one of my grandmothers didn't like chocolate. That's how people are. We have different tastes.
Note also that she didn't lecture, was willing to cook it for others, and did like fish and dairy. Even liked to use goose or duck fat to cook. Just wouldn't eat meat.
But these jerks just show there's something wrong wtih them.

This is why they wanted negotiate in private with Trump. Schumer and Pelosi are good at behind the scenes arm-twisting, threatening, lying - whatever it is that has gotten them this far in DC.
They're not used to selling their ideas, not really. They have canned talking point, euphemisms, and slurs about anyone who disagrees, but they've stopped even trying to sell their ideas - just want to force them.
It was fun to see them completely lost in front of the cameras.

make any money on recycling, so, even though they still separately

One of the few stocks I own is Waste Management. It seems like a good business. Of course they have to get the right prices/incentives from cities, but garbage is not going away. Yet I read something recently from a self described liberal who called this recycling thing out. What he hated most was the strident neighbors who enforced complicity by shaming. He learned that this whole thing is for profit and the companies factor in our free labor when setting their price.
*as I have said before, I don't recommend any stocks period. As far as I know, WM will collapse tomorrow.

No worries, it happens from time to time. I liked the new True Grit too. Just last week I defended the new 3:10 to Yuma. The Movie was already marginal but the source material of course was great. Then a day later I had to deal with Chrisitan Bale basically calling Dick Cheney the devil lol. So I was on even shakier ground. I try not to mix politics with theater but that was pretty much the final straw, screw Christian Bale.

They didn't pick up our trash in CT once because the trash guys said they saw recycle materials in our trash cans. I was pi$$ed but their company rep said they could be fined if they took trash to the municipal dump and they found recycle stuff in there because there was State mandatory recycling laws.
