Media Pushes Yet Another #FakeNews RaceCrime Story
The media claimed that a white woman called the police on a black woman who was merely standing in the doorway of an apartment building because she hates The Blacks.
But the woman waiting in the doorway wasn't black. She was Hispanic. Her name is Obregon. This should have been a tip-off that she was Hispanic rather than black. The woman who called the cops wasn't white. She, too, was Hispanic. Her name is Torres. This should have been a tip-off that she was also Hispanic rather than white. So we have a truly non-racial situation here -- a person of one race calling the cops on a person of the same race. And she called the cops because she's autistic and found the presence of a strange woman in her doorway out-of-the-ordinary and therefore #Triggering in the real, non-stupid sense of the word. Other than that -- great job, media! Note that while the facts are known and were even known at the time this became a viral story, most media outfits that turned this into a fake racial incident have refused to retract or correct. And this woman says she has tried to commit suicide over the continuing social media ordeal. What consequences should the media start to face for targeting citizens like this?"I came downstairs and a woman was standing as I am right now and wouldn't leave," Torres, who was describing the seeds of events that led her life to change, said to me while standing outside of her home in Park Slope. What might have been an unremarkable high-strung incident that occurs hundreds of times a day in New York City, ended up becoming a fake news story that race-baited an incident without credible evidence of bigotry. "Hey, ma'am, this is private property. Could you please move?" Torres recounts saying to Obregon, an assistant to fashion model Ashley Graham, who "just flat-out refused" to leave the premises. "After about ten times of me saying, 'Ma'am, go. This is private property,' [Obregon] still refused. So I called the cops," Torres said. "As a person with autism, I [was] scared. When somebody is blocking me from leaving... it is a big problem. And I was alone in that situation." As Torres dialed 911, Obregon whipped out her phone and began filming. Later that evening -- Torres was at a Broadway show -- the words "worthless skank" popped up on her phone. As dozens more messages poured in, she found out that Obregon had posted the exchange on social media accounts accompanied with hashtags associated with race-related events (even though Obregon is not black). Hashtags such as #WhitePrivilege and #BBQBecky were included. BBQ Becky refers to an event during which a white woman called the police on black people for barbecuing in a public park, saying it was illegal for them to do so."Becky" is also a casual racial slur for a white girl or woman, the same as referring to a Hispanic or black by a stereotypical name.
The anti-racist internet mob found Obregon's posts and began to launch a seek and destroy campaign against Torres. "Your Facebook is out there now. Enjoy being slaughtered by the masses," a California woman wrote. ... Comments in response to the video read, "She's high on something, look at that jaw," "She was just paranoid from whatever she just smoked," "She is not Spanish, she looks Jewish," "You should have beat her up," and worse. ...The Enemy of the People wants to target people for harassment and threats and then pull the SJW crybully act when someone stands up to them and pushes them back.
The reaction to Obregon loitering outside Torres' residence on that summer day was symptomatic of Autistic paranoia; it was not an example of bigotry as media outlets reported. ... Tamar Lapin reported the story at the New York Post. Lapin found the story at Ebony Magazine, a black interest news site. According to Lapin, Ebony broke the story. She called Torres' cellphone saying that she wanted to hear the "other side" of the event. Torres insisted that her 911 call “had nothing to do with race,” and that she herself was not white, and she wasn’t even sure that Obregon was black. "I told her, 'I think you’re exploiting this as a race issue when it's not.'" Even after revealing she has autism to the reporter at The Post, Torres was devastated to learn that the article still maintained that it was a black-white issue. It would seem that nothing Torres could say would stop the domino effect of the fake news. Months later, the internet still knows Torres as "Doorway Debbie." She has made numerous attempts at suicide. "I felt that nobody was going to do anything, no one was going to face any repercussions unless I were to kill myself," Torres said. “I tried to kill myself, I cut myself. I just felt so done and I felt 'this is never going to get better.'" Emily Crane’s story covering Obregon’s and Torres' interaction at the Daily Mail was deleted without any sort of retraction. Others still have not corrected their stories (Newsweek, Ebony Magazine, etc.).

I'm quite a ways from everything being done - lots of bedding from the holiday returnees, plus we just got back from being away and have sackfuls of dirty laundry. It's okay; it makes me feel like I'm doing something useful. At least there's a start and a finish, until, as you say, the next towel hits the bin. Somebody this a.m. was saying that commenters on another site were saying that the mother knew that she'd been targeted, and that she'd taken all the kids with her to the store to use as human shields. They were saying why did she pile all the kids in the car just to go buy juice, when she could have just left the older kid to babysit the others, and left them at home for the 15 minutes or so the task would take.
Seems a bit cynical, but nothing would surprise me at this point.

Somebody this a.m. was saying that commenters on another site were saying that the mother knew that she'd been targeted, and that she'd taken all the kids with her to the store to use as human shields. They were saying why did she pile all the kids in the car just to go buy juice, when she could have just left the older kid to babysit the others, and left them at home for the 15 minutes or so the task would take.
Seems a bit cynical, but nothing would surprise me at this point.

If I am going to parse, which I do, the problem isn't Sullivan per se so much as it is the way Sullivan has been interpreted.
Sullivan as interpreted by the lower courts is basically once your name is in the news, it is nearly impossible for you to win. That's not actually what Sullivan says.
And now I'm thinking about Richard Jewell (I know the AJC paid but still) and the FBI and the press killed him. It took years for him to die, but they killed that man and it still breaks my heart.

I got PreCheck when it looked like I was going to be doing a lot of business travel. Of course, right after that I changed positions at work and had not flown since I got the PreCheck until this weekend. Definitely worth the time and expense of getting PreCheck: sailed right through security with minimal hassle. There were three of leaving the conference that were flying from the same terminal. Myself and one guy had PreCheck, the third didn't. We had already cleared security, found a BBQ joint (DFW), eaten, and were on our second beers by the time the third guy made it through.

It is sad. A majority of white Americans made a conscious effort to reject racism during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Rather than declaring victory in the mid/late 1970s and celebrating a color-blind society, people inside the Civil Rights Movement decided to turn into a grievance industry for cash and power.

It's important to note that kids (and adults) with autism are easily spooked. It can be risky to take autistic kids camping with the family because they are prone to run off (and they can run surprisingly fast) to check out something that interests them, particularly water. There are a number of search-and-rescue cases involving autistic kids lost in the woods where it took rescuers several days to locate the kid because he kept moving from one hiding place to another whenever he heard the rescuers approaching. It doesn't surprise me that Torres (the autistic woman in this case) was spooked by an unknown woman standing in her doorway.
