He told me if he was on duty for New Year's Eve he would find a secluded area just before midnight and just park there for about 20 minutes. One year he was on a call and couldn't do it. His car took a round in the trunk.
The favorite for the Dallas PD was to park under the highway overpass. Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship used to have a midnight NYE service, communion at midnight then disperse. LOTS of gunfire once outside the building. A coworker was getting a roof replaced on an old home in a now upscale gentrified area of the city; roofer informed them on the dozens of rounds he pulled out of the underlying roof material that apparently gathered over the decades. Happy New Years Horde, from an EDT guy. I wanted to thank all of you for your help this last part of this shitty year for me. Everyone of you has helped me, although you may not know it. I needed a place to hang and belong, and this place has certainly been that. Without the horde to turn to, I have no idea how I could have filled time that would have otherwise had me way too far within my own head. The caring attitude that the Horde exhibits to those in need is unbelievable to watch in practice. So, to those of you who have directly helped, and you know who you are, I thank you. You can always reload and reprime old 12ga shotgun shells filled to the top with your choice of powder. compress and seal it down. Then superglue a BB to the primer. Cut up some 3x5 cards and glue them to the opposite end of the shell to create a Jart effect. Then when its time to celebrate, lob them in the air and when the BB/Primer makes contact with the ground you get a window rattling blast. Miklos, why, it's almost as if there's some pattern to it, some connection between behavior and other stuff. Huh.
Closest thing to military equipment used for fireworks I ever saw was back in the glorious USSR, Navy Day in Leningrad. They had mortars set up along the riverbank opposite the Winter Palace, they'd fire red flares - hellacious report, booming echoes bouncing off the buildings, though the glass in our building - right nearby - would break. Visual wasn't as great as it sounds - August, so, night-time was barely dusky - but the audio was outstanding. Posted by: rhomboid at January 01, 2019 12:29 AM (QDnY+) 151

And to me, those two Bond movies are and will always be the best. . Not just that I saw them, as a kid, on the big screen. Something about the whole feel to them is different. Same with Dr No. Not knocking the other Bond films, but a few were special. Where the concept of "classic" comes from. Speaking of which, watched most of Casablanca on TCM last night. I think I actually enjoy it more now than the first few times I watched it, years and years ago. Hardly a line in the movie that isn't brilliant in some way. Posted by: rhomboid at J you are good through tomorrow. you know what is really funny? for some reason I was watching never say never when it cut off last year. when it started this year that same movie was at the top of my list. when I hit start it started from the middle of the movie where it cut our the year before. For those who missed, the Dallas New Year's Eve display at Reunion Tower just put every other city's display (including NYC's!) to shame! 15 full minutes of fireworks shooting out of the ball on top of ReUnion (if you've driven through Dallas, you know what I'm talking about, it dominates the skyline) It was a hell of a show!
Right now I'm finding out how many neighbors I have who like to get drunk and see how many times they can empty clips in their glock in the air. Oh well, happens every year. I don't worry about the pistols, it's the heavy artillery that some people break out of storage that worries me a bit. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 01, 2019 01:17 AM (V2Yro) 306

Time for the old folk.
Remember above all else the next 2 years that we are Americans, not merely people who live in this country, so that head is held HIGH and PROUD. It is OUR country and we WILL vanquish the socialist left. There can be no other course. I would remind many of you about the oath we took that has no expiration date. We're going to be called on to fulfill it, so be ready. I can't say what form fulfilling it will take, only that events will demand it. We'll prevail, as we have in other perilous times, so never despair or doubt. We will prevail because as Americans, we are denied the option of failure. Never forget that. Goodnite, good people. Again, no one answered except the the Japanese kid who said "Abraham Lincoln, 1863" The teacher said to the class; "Aren't you kids ashamed of yourselves? He was throwing stones near the border in February when a bullet shattered his leg. He was rushed to hospital for surgery, but his wound became infected and he developed osteomyelitis, a serious infection inside the bone which can often lead to amputation. This is nice, from the previous thread. I don't recognize the nick:
708 The scene, New Year's party: Then the hands of the clock started to race like a tortoise and the hare and both reached midnight at the same time. The clock struck along with every clock in New York, and church bells, fire works, and ships whistles sounded all at once, turning the entire city into a hurdy-gurdy. It soon got so cold that the men rushed to close the doors. When they had shut them and the room was again silent, they saw that several women had begun to cry. The women said it was because of the numbing air that had washed over their bare shoulders, but even strangers embraced sadly as they coasted into the new year and felt its strength commencing. They cried because of the magic and the contradictions; because time had passed and time was left; because they saw themselves as if they were in a photograph that had winked fast enough to contradict their mortality; because the city around them had conspired to break a hundred thousand hearts; and because they and everyone else had to float upon this sea of troubles, watertight. Sometimes there were islands, and when they found them they held fast, but never could they hold fast enough not to be moved and once again overwhelmed. ----- Keep looking for your island, don't stop, never stop, and when you find it, hold fast. (That's a joke: I know the distance does not change ...) Posted by: Kingsnake at January 01, 2019 05:44 AM Actually, if you believe in the validity of Milankovitch cycles, it does change sometimes into a more elliptical orbit. There are three separate cycles Milankovitch identified. Interesting thing is if all three align in the worst possible way the planet goes into an ice age. There's no scientific dispute about that. It doesn't happen overnight of course. But gradually the temperature of the planet lowers. Very naturally. But if the temperature of the planet naturally rises after the end of an ice age, very gradually, it's entirely caused by mankind and cause for panic. Tried an experiment tonight. When friends texted or called to say, "Happy New Year", I responded with either, "Seasons Greetings" or "Happy Holidays."
Not one person responded positively. Every single one of them said, "Why in the hell did you say that? You can't just say, "Happy New Year?" Posted by: Sam Adams at January 01, 2019 06:05 AM (VDbGO) 508

There has been no actual warming for 18 years and 9 months. Posted by: rhennigantx at January 01, 2019 06:10 AM That's actually kind of alarming. If the gradual convergence of the three cycles was the cause of the ice age, then the gradual movement away from that convergence should raise temperature. Entirely naturally. My personal theory is that all of the particulate matter that China is putting into the atmosphere is causing increased rainfall in the northern hemisphere. Which is lowering our temperature in this area and setting near records for rain. Posted by: Newest Nic at January 01, 2019 06:22 AM (jYje5) 518

I have always thought the earth has natural heating and cooling cycles and there isn't anything humans can do to stop it. You can't pick a period in the cycle and say this is it stop it here.

A bunch of years ago I put an indoor/outdoor antenna into my attic area, directed at Philadelphia even though it was on the edge of the antenna range. Lots of sunspots then. Charged particles put a 'blanket' over the area and kept tv reception locked in. Really great reception. Now? Can't get one single channel. Posted by: rhennigantx at January 01, 2019 06:51 AM Once again the cognitive dissonance on the left; they know damn well that it takes a ratio of around three workers to one social security recipient to fund the system. But at the same time they don't give a fvck that millions are working 'off the books' and taking jobs away from people who would actually fund the system. The answer? As always, higher taxes or reduced benefits for Americans. Posted by: Newest Nic at January 01, 2019 06:57 AM (jYje5) Posted by: AltonJackson at January 01, 2019 06:59 AM (KCxzN) 545
