They stopped selling beer....in pitchers. You could still order all of the cups of beer that you wanted, it was just harder to transport it back to your table. So now instead of one person going up to grab the next round, 2 went. But in some administrator's mind this meant the problem was “solved”.

But I wanted to ask the Horde for their prayers for a friend of mine's step son (close enough, he's engaged to the boy's mother, for all intents and purposes he's “dad” ). Little Lincoln was recently diagnosed with High Risk Neuroblastoma. When I found out, I asked my wife “What's the prognosis?”. She said in an utterly neutral voice “They just had a half birthday party for him”. He's 2 ½, and if y'all could pray that he makes 3 (and beyond), I'd really appreciate it. You know what the big hot gift was for the kids and all their friends this year? A smaller version of a Polaroid camera, I shit you not. file, the 3PL one? It's gone. No one knows what happened to it.

and we lost any potential profit this year because our warehouse
manager turned in an incorrect cycle count at the end of Q3 so our
inventory value was high by just under $100K."

Pretty much. The rarified air of Pro-Sumer Grade and truly Pro Grade DSLR cameras is a true step above even the best of the phone-cameras.
But that's due to specialization such as full-frame sensor size, user-control over every aspect of the exposure, and interchangeable lenses.
Mostly, interchangeable lenses.
They do make cheap "snap-over" auxiliary lenses for the phone cameras.
Now, if (for example) Samsung would team up with (for example) Nikon, to make a truly superior SYSTEM phone camera, that'd be damn near game-over to the camera industry, outside of upper echelon Professional Gear.
Me though, being old fashioned, I lust after the Nikon Df DSLR body. ANALOG controls are placed exactly as they were for the 35mm film Nikon FM body. All the digital magic is found on the back of the camera.
Sublime. Instinctive. VERY effective.
And interchangeable lenses will always reign over the "everything" lenses of the point n' shoot world.
Problem is, lugging all that around with you, of course.

When I was in the Navy long ago I bought one of those Polaroid sx-70 cameras. Made a killing selling pictures to the other squids when we'd hit port overseas. Paid for the camera.
Got a great shot of my senior CPO with a hooker outside a bar in Naples Italy. I only let him sweat for a day and then handed the picture over to him though.

Hiking is ... fun, or can be. But, it can also be miserable. "This is a vacation"?? I always suffered from "bring this along, will come in handy". Same problem with car camping, I bring everything. Takes a few days to get everything organized, and more trouble than it's worth. I enjoy it, but nobody wants to do it anymore, and hiking or camping alone, while fun for a while is especially miserable alone.

I've heard good things about it.
Funny thing is that's the third iteration of a game with that name. The first one was supposed to be the next game from the company that made Duke Nukem 3D, but never actually got released (I suspect the ideas behind it were too ambitious). The second one was about a Native American that got kidnapped by space aliens. I played a demo, and I kept going in and out of a spirit world. It got panned, iirc. And then there's this one, which is apparently unrelated to the previous game. And people have said good things about it.

I was at a guitar store in upstate new york, drove like 7 hours to get there. When I got there there was a dude outside talking to this "person" who was literally dressed like a fairy, like peter pan tinker bell type fairy. As I got closer I could tell it was a dude. He was very thin, and was in some pink body suit with a small tutu, and had plastic fairy wings, and had some weird thing on his head that was part tiara and part wind farm, and was on a pink bike with a basket, and had glitter on his face. Turns out the one dude was the store owner, who I was there to see. I'm standing there for 5 minutes until they get done talking and the person pedals off. The owner says hey hows it going. I say "good, sooo uh.. what the fuck was THAT??!!"

I was always fond of the Jos A Banks line, and I admit to having a number of Nordstrom suit jackets. Alfani makes a very nice suit too.

It's the Lone Star Hik8ng Trail, about an hour north of Houston in the Sam Houston National Forest.
I know what you mean about the packing. All of our gear is ultra-light so my bas weight is good, under 15lbs. My pack weighs 4lbs alone but it has an awesome frame so you carry all the weight on your hips, Osprey. The food and water is what kills me, I usually have about a pound of food per day but the water is what really weighs a lot. 3 liters of water is about 7lbs.if it's hot you have to carry more depending on water sources/supplies.

Sounds like a trip you'll remember. Sometimes the tough hikes are the ones that stick out! Have you thought about trying dehydrated water?
I put on about 150 miles or more per season depending . We are lucky up here with so many water sources we don't need to carry much and filter at rivers, lakes etc.. But I know in drier places we've been able to find trail crossings at roads and cache food and water (OK maybe a beer two as well) Sounds like a fun adventure though. They are very nice shirts, my only real complaint is that on a couple I own, somehow the placket and cuffs were pressed so hard the material started to fail.
I like Nordstrom shirts, though, at least the serious ones. Hard wearing cotton broadcloth, and a good finish and fit.
And I admit they are not cheap.

The 1930s to 1970s were the halcyon days for outdoor equipment and camping. Well made stuff that would last forever. Designed by people who actually tested and used the stuff, with good materials. Once marketing and bean counters get involved, it's over. Buncha foo-foo fashion stuff that won't hold up.

Yeah those were the days. I have no clue what the policy is today. I never broke many craftsman tools, just wore out a ratchet handle here and there and they always seemed to stock the parts to rebuild them. No questions asked.

When we did Gila in October it was at elevation and there were plenty of water sources...in certain areas. 2 springs we were counting on were dry in the first 3 days. The last 2 we had 90+ river crossings so water wasn't an issue.
The LSHT was covered in water so it wasn't an issue this time either.

That era's Craftsman Tools were a poor man's Snap-On, with a very similar feel in the hand, fit, finish and quality.
And 2nd the Nordstrom's shirt. Back in my Corporate days in the '80s n' '90, those shirts were well represented in my closet. And pre-hip-hop era, Abercrombie & Fitch made a quality dress shirt, too.
Buy once, cry once. If you've got to dress well as a part of your working attire, buy the good stuff.
I'll be the first to admit to buying a cheap dress shirt at WalMart, for something on short notice. But I know from the outset, it's only gonna last a few launderings, before it's done for.
Same goes for dress shoes.
And a Brooks Brothers "cut" is timeless.

Last gig was in fairly primitive conditions, yet required some dress-up (body armor with sport-coat was a look). Got some LL Bean perma-press kind of dress shirts, very happy with them. Quality, fit, look are excellent.
Nordstrom always had excellent quality stuff, used to have their dress shirts. Haven't been inside one in a while. Brooks Brothers was an adjective, a description for classic conservative business look, glad to see that still sells. Jos. Bank was a good alternative - think they started in Baltimore? Used to buy from them in the DC years.

Mostly in Northern MN I've through hiked the Superior Hiking Trail which is about 320 miles from south of Duluth to Canada, Then the Border route trail (which follows the Canadian border, hence the name) Isle Royale in Michigan. Some of the AT but only 100 miles of it. Kids and business limit how much I can get out. I do a couple 14ers every year in Colorado. Some hiking in AZ. but mostly CO and MN. Hiking in Denali is on my list!

We use Sawyer filters for water that's why I only carry 2 liters if there is a lot of water around. Stopping to filter water constantly is a pain that's another reason to carry at least 2 liters. If it's going to be a day between sources then you need to carry at least 4 liters. You need to water to rehydrate most of your food too.

In the previous era, in DC, guvamint types were infamous for being bad dressers. Law firm types, lobbyists, generally better, though a lot of failz there too. Hill was mixed. Apart from members, you stood out if you dressed well.
My only contact with the legal profession in SoCal (hamdul'allah) have been a few jury duty experiences. The legal types seemed to fall between the govt. worker and modestly well-dressed K Street type. So just curious.

I started out in a 50-lawyer firm, and a suit and tie every day was the expectation. I went to a 500-lawyer firm and I remember a major controversy over whether we would have "casual Fridays." Over strenuous objections by some of the older partners, we finally did.
Now, it seems to be nearly universal, even at the largest firms, that every day is casual day, unless you have a court appearance or deposition. Even client meetings are usually casual. Weird.
The change in culture over the decades has been interesting to watch.

All the partners were bragging about their new porche's and espresso makers that cost tons, the para's got a .25 cent an hour raise. I left of my volition sometime later. I guess I am still talked about re the jeans that one Friday.
I did dress them up with a nice silk blouse, jacket and heels.

I work in Salem, Oregon, and the best dressed usually have something to do with the courts and the legislature.
You see sharp dressers around the Capital, the Department of Justice and the state supreme court building, and the attorneys and such around the county court house, but most don't dress up like that.
Of course some of the legislators have no fashion sense and some dress poorly on purpose I suppose.
The muckamuks in the state agencies tend to dress carefully if they go to any legislative sessions, but normally dress down too.

Filtered water may need treatment if viruses are a concern, but the concentration can be reduced. Normally 8mg/l is the standard dose of Iodine. (Blech!) If water has been filtered, only a tiny fraction of that amount is necessary. I understand modern filters sometimes have a disinfection capability as well as filtering. They sure have a lot of recalls on their products though.
The one thing about drinking untreated or suspect water, you're most likely to get sick after return home from vacation. As in really, really sick.

I worked for one company from 1986-1996. At first, biz attire everyday. The owner sold to GE in 1992, and the suits that GE brought in were biz casual people. It took about a year for the entire Sales/PM staff to go biz casual. The former owner never gave up biz attire.

That era's Craftsman Tools were a poor man's Snap-On, with a very similar feel in the hand, fit, finish and quality.

China?? Frigging china?? Damn, thats a crime against humanity. I'm still using craftsman tools that I got in the early 80's, They did a fuck ton of work. I did switch over to snap-on ratchet handles and wrenches in the 90's. The older craftsman wrenches and ratchet handles are a tad crude feeling in the hand compared to snap-on, so that was worth the money, but as for sockets I'm still beating on those early 80's craftsman. Never broke one. One interesting thing about snap-on, there are small phillips head screws holding the harley handlebar switches in the housings that only snap-on screw drivers remove in one shot without wrecking the screws. I tried every screw driver known to man kind. SK, MAC tools, craftsman, husky, you name it, I have them all. None....none work like the snap-on screw drivers. It gets them out every time. I still test that theory every so often, but the damn snap-ons win every time.

And speaking of all this camping and hiking talk, I used to do that! I had a friend who was waaaaayyyy into it and he used to take me on gnarly week-long hikes, packing everything in and out, drinking out of potholes and streams. I relied completely on his expertise, so I couldn't replicate it on my own, but I sometimes think of joining a club and getting back into it. Eastern Sierras, Southern Utah, the Grand Canyon, that was great country.

'70s Craftsman and Snap On forgings came from the same house, and went only to different finishing contractors from there.
They were too near identical in form and feel, otherwise.
Today's "Craftsman" are un-finished crusty-finish forgings, with only the tool areas and label-flats machined smooth for stampings.
The Lowe's line of Kobalt tools is finished to a far higher standard.
Almost to the old Craftsman standard.
Go figure?

green Coleman two-burner stove and a 200A red lantern, both from 1965
I've since morphed away from lightweight stuff and embraced cast
iron dutch ovens, fireplace set, enamel ware, wall tent w/wood stove.
Right comfortable camp. For hiking I used to carry (solo) a Eureka
Timberline. Plenty of room and nice on rainy days.

Need to go get some. Current pair get used a lot, they do eventually wear out (mine always start to fray on the thigh, just below the big pocket).
In my experience I find cotton better in the sand box/desert, but some of the very light nylon/synthetic stuff has been better in the humid tropics.

That must be before my time, because since the extreme late 70's I never remember craftsman being anything other than rough forgings with the only machining done was on contact surfaces, like the part of the wrench that actually grabs the bolt. I still see those wrenches and ratchets in my drawers ever time I'm in there, and they're almost 40 years old. I can see them being forged at the same place though. They were definitely strong ass tools. I never broke one, and I still have a shit ton of them. I use them when I have to screw with a car and the tools might end up on the ground. The snap on stuff never sees the ground. lol

Do you remember the bench top brand of tools Kmart used to sell in the 90's? I had a car mechanic friend who used to rant about how good they were for dirt cheap. He worked in the auto section of K mart and he would tell me how he beat those tools. Finally I said ok, lets go, I'm going to buy $50 worth and I'll turn them to dust in a week. I saw the wrenches, and they looked like the older snap-on wrenches with the older style font, and they looked nice, and they were $20. I bought a 3 piece wobble extension set for $7, and a torx bit socket set for around $15, and a string of 3/8 sockets for $12. I told my friend at that price they'll be unrecognizable in a week. I'll be damned, they never broke, and the wrenches were so nice that my new at the time snap-on wrenches sat unused for years, and I'm still using the damn things as my main wrenches. I use the snap-on only when I need more leverage because they are longer.

Funny story. Daughter and fiancee went shopping and got his wedding suit, shirt, tie, socks, shoes. They are getting married in February. Fiance has always been a mechanic, now a Master Diesel.
None of them could tie a tie. His buddies were also mechanics. They had to bring it to me because hid dad was also a mechanic and never wore one.
I nailed in one with a divoted single windsor, which they left like that for the wedding.

You'd thinks so, right? And a smart man, or a more careful man, would do exactly that. I was fighting a bolt at the time (and losing), and I just yelled "fuckshitdamnassBITCH!" And tossed the damn thing across the garage into the trash can in disgust. The next day I thought better of it and went to fish it out only to find that Little, for the first time in months (probably because I growled at him in no uncertain terms "Get ALL the trash out this week, no being lazy!" because of all the Christmas waste), had actually emptied the bin in my shop. He never empties that one. But this week he did. So here I sit, hoist on my own petard.

I haven't bought many tools since the 70s. I'm more a hobbyist, and I take care of what I have.
Some tools like a steering wheel puller get used so seldom that I just get 'em from Harbor Freight, figuring they only have to last thru 1 or 2 jobs to pay for themselves.

I just bought, for my "road box" tools, a 203-piece set of Stanley "black chrome" tools that look like Snap-On knockoffs. 72-tooth ratchets in 1/4 3/8, and 1/2" drive. Have not yet put them to any serious use, but they feel nice in the hand. Set was 99.95 CDN. They are definitely better than the old POS socket set in my previous road box.

FWIW, Ace doesn't do a lot of banning, that usually falls to us, and we usually discuss it in the COBS email group before or afterwards. When Ace does get on a banning spree, being a COB can be like being the priests of an angry god. We just stand back and let the chips fall where they may. I just did a search in my email for "Uncle Palp" and got no hits. So, either
#1 Ace banned him and didn't say anything. It happens, he's the boss
#2 a COB banned him and didn't say anything, which would be unusual
#3 I deleted and removed all of the email discussion on the banning, which I can't remember ever doing

#4 He stopped posting here.

Way back in the 80s. But I went up in style - the Canadian Forces' DC-3. They told me it had been sold to Honduras in the 60s or something, then repurchased early 80s. They had some electronic thingamabobs (technical term) installed in the wings, something to do with radar training.
We were delayed for a day by the exotic (to me) condition of an "ice fog" in Edmonchuk. Sadly the Oilers were not in town for a game, but did get a tour of the parliament. These were the days of "Sheikh" Lougheed (sp?). It was funny. There was one/1/uno opposition member in parliament, so his chair sat there, facing all the others - more like a theater for a show trial than a parliament.
Don't remember if we even left the base up there. One night and a day.

Go take the tour of the USS Alabama, just East of Mobile.
It is the ONLY BB with the lower turret cut open to allow a tour within the barbette itself.
Every part and operation is there for you to observe.
It brings it all into focus.
Not an IOWA, but still a 16 in Naval Rifle. Same manual of arms in the turret, etc.
Their placards discuss the IOWA disaster, at length.
And the open spaces to tour the engine rooms, reduction gears and boilers, have to be seen to be understood.
I don't think there's another museum ship anywhere with comparable access.

They were still flying the CF-104's out pf there, then. My cousin's wife was the civilian secretary to the base commander at that time. When they retired the 104's he offered to take her out for a flight in one of the two-seaters they had. She turned him down because she was too tall to fit comfortably in the seat.

Mostly flying helicopter stuff, but he had to stay current in the zoomies, all the same.
One fine weekend, he was going to take my late Dad up in an F-104 twin seater. They were both all suited up, briefed and approved.
Only to be bounced by a One Star, who needed to get his "hours" in to keep his flight pay intact.
And that was as close as my Dad got to going up in the '104.
But at least I got to go out on two or three subs. Once was a Tiger Cruise.
The others... "didn't happen".
Post maintenance day shakedowns were funny that way in the early '70s.

Capitalism is funny like that. But generally, the "old way" is so ingrained in the company culture and is considered important, to protect or extend the value of the existing technology. The new way of looking at things, with the new upstart, has no problem shucking the existing technology or investment, because there isn't any.

My undergrad school sponsored an afternoon gathering in early autumn at a state park located sixty miles from the campus. The drinking age at the time was eighteen and driving to the location was the only option. Imagine the chaos. Imagine the good times.
They still hold the event, but at a state park no more than twenty miles away and, of course, the drinking age is back up to twenty-one.

My undergrad school sponsored an afternoon gathering in early autumn at a state park located sixty miles from the campus. The drinking age at the time was eighteen and driving to the location was the only option. Imagine the chaos. Imagine the good times.
They still hold the event, but at a state park no more than twenty miles away and, of course, the drinking age is back up to twenty-one.

FWIW, not that anyone gives a hoot, but after the "disappearance" of Uncle Palp, I created a security notification protocol that I think is reasonable:
1. Daughter H has been given a sealed envelope containing my Platinum Membership Card and instructions for posting a status update on AoS and
2. The envelope also contains the (pseudo) names and email addresses of several posters and a COB that I know from here with notification information.

Since all of the legal people are going with it I will too. SCOTUS ruled that federal laws were supreme over State in laws in 1920 and a court case specifically affirmed that in 1987.
The act was expressly upheld as constitutional in 1987 by the United States Supreme Court in South Dakota v. Dole.

A very close friend was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma over 6 years ago. The disease, until very recently, remained dormant. The cancer has become active and is aggressive and hard to treat. Please pray for remission and a return to good health.
I will put it on the prayer list for Wednesday's Daily Rant, but just wanted to get it out here now. Also, for those that didn't see it, WeirdDave has a prayer request above i for a 2 1/2 year old boy (Lincoln) he knows who has high risk neuroblastoma. Thanks

I feel that way about people who have contacted me about prayer requests and then I don't here from them and can't get in touch because my last hard drive with their contact information crashed and I don't have the funds to get it repaired so I have no idea how they're doing.
