Happy New Year ONT

Well, it's not for a few days yet, but I won't be here then, so Happy New Year! Is everyone ready for New Year's Eve?

Prepper beer.jpg

It's not a very good price though. It'd be more economical just to grab 135 cases.

Moron Love

Well, we've been around long enough that there are now couples who met and fell in love here, Miley and Publius being the latest example. Now, I know Miley is only 29, but I don't think she wants any more kids. Still, there's got to be some Moron parents out there...

Dan Hannan: Falling IQ scores may explain why politics has turned so nasty

I admire Dan a lot, but I think he misses most of the boat here. The main reason that politics is so nasty is because one side profits politically from making it so and keeping it so. It's as simple as that. The right isn't going to get anywhere until we openly acknowledge that there is no longer a loyal opposition, but instead a faction that seeks the destruction of the existing structure so that they can replace it with another. It isn't political opposition, it's an insurgency. This isn't that hard.

Nanny State Insanity

Revealed: the new calorie limits on every common food

So, in order to “combat obesity”, Britain is setting limits for the number of calories allowed in any single meal sold. This makes total sense if you're an idiot who just landed from planet Mouthbreather. Anyone who wants more calories can just...order another meal. Shocking.

Of course this kind of lunacy isn't new. Back * mumble mumble * years ago, when I was in college, the campus bar in the student union sold draft beer. One night, a student go plastered, staggered out to his car, and passed out in the back seat. Seeing as how it was in the middle of winter, he almost froze to death. The university's solution? They stopped selling beer....in pitchers. You could still order all of the cups of beer that you wanted, it was just harder to transport it back to your table. So now instead of one person going up to grab the next round, 2 went. But in some administrator's mind this meant the problem was “solved”.

Serious question: Does this look sane? Forget the politics for a second, pretend the customer is wearing an Obama/Biden shirt. Is there anyone here who would say anything other than "That guy's nuts"? I honestly believe that if he'd had a gun handy, he would have at least tried to shoot the customer.

She said in an utterly neutral voice “They just had a half birthday party for him”. He's 2 ½, and if y'all could pray that he makes 3 (and beyond), I'd really appreciate it. Also, if you've got a couple of bucks rattling around that you were wondering what to do with, there's a Go Fund Me here. He's a sweet little kid, every bit will help.

Or school bus. Any kid from a snowy climate can tell you tales of "Hookeybobbing". Which entailed grabbing the bumper of the school bus on a snowy day when the streets were still full of snow and ice. We used to have competitions to see who could go the farthest. Some of your buddies would still be on the bus of course cheering you on. Made it really far one day, like really far. It was cool until I realized I now had to walk all that way home.

78 So, after a failed attempt at backpacking the LSHT we were walking back to our vehicle, 7.5 miles by road after 12+ miles of slogging through water and mud, and the local rural mail carrier saw that we were backpackers and figured we were heading back to the trailhead. He stopped and gave us a ride for the last 1.5 miles and got us back before dark. That guy was a god send. We were both in rough shape after almost walking 20 miles with 30 lb packs. The trail was in horrible shape after 3 plus inches of rain Wednesday night. The trail turned into running streams mostly, a muddy bog for a mile or so, and literally a bayou in other areas. It was probably 85-90% under water. Our feet were wet the whole day. We are home now and I feel like I've been run over by a truck.

One of the ladies was very nice to me, and asked me if I'd found a church yet (there's a church on almost every corner down here - you can swing a cat without hitting one). I told her no, that while I was raised Roman Catholic, I didn't believe in it. She assured me that I would be welcome, and that they had several Catholics in their congregation who had converted to Christianity.

92 Well. in case Morticia or anybody else wanted to see, I'll repost this from the last thread -

"Hmm, okay, company stories. Well, we have a nearly useless salesman who
is mostly being kept on because he's a huge potential legal liability -
he's been illegally accessing one of our biggest customer's ERP systems
because it's his family's old business and he used to work there. Since
we have companies that we sell direct to that we used to sell through
this company, he knows when they're low on stock of certain items so he
can push for bigger sales to our shared customer.

We act as a 3PL
for another big customer. They sell a bunch of shit on Amazon so we
Invoice them once it hits our dock then warehouse it until it needs to
be shipped to fulfillment centers. Nobody could quite figure out to run
it on the same Quickbooks file so we made a second file just for
tracking those Amazon shipments. Well, we used to use a VPN-like virtual
desktop to access Quickbooks. We switched to a local work network and
accessing the program natively from our individual computers. And that
file, the 3PL one? It's gone. No one knows what happened to it.

Oh
and we lost any potential profit this year because our warehouse
manager turned in an incorrect cycle count at the end of Q3 so our
inventory value was high by just under $100K."

Pretty much. The rarified air of Pro-Sumer Grade and truly Pro Grade DSLR cameras is a true step above even the best of the phone-cameras.

But that's due to specialization such as full-frame sensor size, user-control over every aspect of the exposure, and interchangeable lenses.

Mostly, interchangeable lenses.

They do make cheap "snap-over" auxiliary lenses for the phone cameras.

Now, if (for example) Samsung would team up with (for example) Nikon, to make a truly superior SYSTEM phone camera, that'd be damn near game-over to the camera industry, outside of upper echelon Professional Gear.

Me though, being old fashioned, I lust after the Nikon Df DSLR body. ANALOG controls are placed exactly as they were for the 35mm film Nikon FM body. All the digital magic is found on the back of the camera.

Sublime. Instinctive. VERY effective.

And interchangeable lenses will always reign over the "everything" lenses of the point n' shoot world.

Problem is, lugging all that around with you, of course.

171 Morticia, since I've been there my boss' roommates have always been employees. The current one is someone he knew in college and he's a VP of one of our product lines. I have no idea what he does most of the time because I know how long it takes to do the tasks he claims to be responsible for, and if that's what he does, then he puts in 10-15 hours at most a week. He's only been in the office two and of the past 6 or 7 weeks, but it's okay because he's "working from home." I think he's just getting paid for being his roommate.

I should add that my boss has hired wayyyy too many people that went to our high school at some point, either classmates or ours or people who graduated after we'd already left.

Otherwise, it is your responsibility to get it off the truck.

181 Been spending my time the last day or so managing a park full of cloned dinosaurs. Jurassic World Evolution is an interesting little game that has you running the infamous park across five (six if you count the island where you play the sandbox mode) islands. A snarky Jeff Goldbloom pops up from time to time as Dr. Ian Malcom, as do some of the other characters from the movies (BD Wong and Bryce Howard both return; Chris Pratt's character is voiced by someone else).

And no, I haven't let the velociraptors loose on the visitors yet (partly because I haven't quite gotten enough velociraptor DNA yet...).

The super dinosaurs (Indominous Rex and Indoraptor) from the last two movies (which I haven't seen) are both unlockable in the game for those who are feeling truly insane.

The game's fun, but I don't think it'd be worth the full price that they're asking for it. Fortunately, it's got an amazingly huge discount on Steam right now as part of Steam's annual Winter Sale.

KMart had two major problems: 1) they forgot to look in the rear view mirror and got totally run over by Walmart. 2} The corporate culture was horrible, and juat kept getting worse. A friend of mine worked for KMart until this past spring and kept me in the loop. We both knew there was big trouble ahead when Sears bought KMart because essentially nothing changed. Both KMart and Sears kept tripping merrily down the daisy path as if nothing was happening.

Sears is in the same hole as Barnes & Noble -- their real estate holdings are worth more than the actual companies.

When I got there there was a dude outside talking to this "person" who was literally dressed like a fairy, like peter pan tinker bell type fairy. As I got closer I could tell it was a dude. He was very thin, and was in some pink body suit with a small tutu, and had plastic fairy wings, and had some weird thing on his head that was part tiara and part wind farm, and was on a pink bike with a basket, and had glitter on his face. Turns out the one dude was the store owner, who I was there to see. I'm standing there for 5 minutes until they get done talking and the person pedals off. The owner says hey hows it going. I say "good, sooo uh.. what the fuck was THAT??!!"

A Brooks Brothers flannel wool suit was considered the American suit.

I was always fond of the Jos A Banks line, and I admit to having a number of Nordstrom suit jackets. Alfani makes a very nice suit too.

And you know what else? Their dress shirts don't cost $115!!!

I know what you mean about the packing. All of our gear is ultra-light so my bas weight is good, under 15lbs. My pack weighs 4lbs alone but it has an awesome frame so you carry all the weight on your hips, Osprey. The food and water is what kills me, I usually have about a pound of food per day but the water is what really weighs a lot. 3 liters of water is about 7lbs.if it's hot you have to carry more depending on water sources/supplies.

Then the imports flooded the markets, American textiles died. The lifetime return policy went bye-bye, casualty of modern grifters. A "high trust" society can do do stuff like that.

Sounds like a trip you'll remember. Sometimes the tough hikes are the ones that stick out! Have you thought about trying dehydrated water? I put on about 150 miles or more per season depending . We are lucky up here with so many water sources we don't need to carry much and filter at rivers, lakes etc.. But I know in drier places we've been able to find trail crossings at roads and cache food and water (OK maybe a beer two as well) Sounds like a fun adventure though.

252 Bean's, Indiana Camp Supply (sadly, no more) REI, North Face, Jansport, Campmor, etc were outdoor based companies almost exclusively. I think marketing decided they needed to broaden their base, to more urban customers.

The 1930s to 1970s were the halcyon days for outdoor equipment and camping. Well made stuff that would last forever. Designed by people who actually tested and used the stuff, with good materials. Once marketing and bean counters get involved, it's over. Buncha foo-foo fashion stuff that won't hold up.

270 Craftsman Tools are now Made in China, and simply don't compare to what they were back in the '70s.

That era's Craftsman Tools were a poor man's Snap-On, with a very similar feel in the hand, fit, finish and quality.

And 2nd the Nordstrom's shirt. Back in my Corporate days in the '80s n' '90, those shirts were well represented in my closet. And pre-hip-hop era, Abercrombie & Fitch made a quality dress shirt, too.

Buy once, cry once. If you've got to dress well as a part of your working attire, buy the good stuff.

I'll be the first to admit to buying a cheap dress shirt at WalMart, for something on short notice. But I know from the outset, it's only gonna last a few launderings, before it's done for.

Same goes for dress shoes.

And a Brooks Brothers "cut" is timeless.

273 Been a while since I bought any, but $115 for a dress shirt? Fairly sure you can have them custom made for significantly less (either that chain of custom shirt shops, or even a traveling Hong Kong tailor, they're still around).

Last gig was in fairly primitive conditions, yet required some dress-up (body armor with sport-coat was a look). Got some LL Bean perma-press kind of dress shirts, very happy with them. Quality, fit, look are excellent.

Nordstrom always had excellent quality stuff, used to have their dress shirts. Haven't been inside one in a while. Brooks Brothers was an adjective, a description for classic conservative business look, glad to see that still sells. Jos. Bank was a good alternative - think they started in Baltimore? I started out in a 50-lawyer firm, and a suit and tie every day was the expectation. I went to a 500-lawyer firm and I remember a major controversy over whether we would have "casual Fridays." Over strenuous objections by some of the older partners, we finally did.

Now, it seems to be nearly universal, even at the largest firms, that every day is casual day, unless you have a court appearance or deposition. Even client meetings are usually casual. Weird.

The change in culture over the decades has been interesting to watch.

I work in Salem, Oregon, and the best dressed usually have something to do with the courts and the legislature.
You see sharp dressers around the Capital, the Department of Justice and the state supreme court building, and the attorneys and such around the county court house, but most don't dress up like that.
Of course some of the legislators have no fashion sense and some dress poorly on purpose I suppose.

The muckamuks in the state agencies tend to dress carefully if they go to any legislative sessions, but normally dress down too.

337 Boiling kills the nasties in raw water very well. I wouldn't bother disinfecting water that has been boiled.

Filtered water may need treatment if viruses are a concern, but the concentration can be reduced. Normally 8mg/l is the standard dose of Iodine. (Blech!) If water has been filtered, only a tiny fraction of that amount is necessary. I understand modern filters sometimes have a disinfection capability as well as filtering. They sure have a lot of recalls on their products though.

The one thing about drinking untreated or suspect water, you're most likely to get sick after return home from vacation. As in really, really sick.

China?? Frigging china?? Damn, thats a crime against humanity. I'm still using craftsman tools that I got in the early 80's, They did a fuck ton of work. I did switch over to snap-on ratchet handles and wrenches in the 90's. The older craftsman wrenches and ratchet handles are a tad crude feeling in the hand compared to snap-on, so that was worth the money, but as for sockets I'm still beating on those early 80's craftsman. Never broke one. One interesting thing about snap-on, there are small phillips head screws holding the harley handlebar switches in the housings that only snap-on screw drivers remove in one shot without wrecking the screws. I tried every screw driver known to man kind. SK, MAC tools, craftsman, husky, you name it, I have them all. None....none work like the snap-on screw drivers. It gets them out every time. I still test that theory every so often, but the damn snap-ons win every time.

363 338 The contact was incidental to the tackle, and the direction was parallel to the QB's helmet and body, not into it. Basically their helmets rubbed against each other during the tackle. The rule should allow for that. Even if you want to make that illegal, which it shouldn't be, automatic ejection is too much. "Spearing" has always been against the rules, and IMO was sufficient. Mandatory ejection for one infraction, unless it very flagrant, hurts the game.

The tool fanatic sites would be the go to in order to confirm this, but I'll make a wager.

'70s Craftsman and Snap On forgings came from the same house, and went only to different finishing contractors from there.

They were too near identical in form and feel, otherwise.

Today's "Craftsman" are un-finished crusty-finish forgings, with only the tool areas and label-flats machined smooth for stampings.

The Lowe's line of Kobalt tools is finished to a far higher standard.

Almost to the old Craftsman standard.

Go figure?

379 Zettai, no, see those, but below those are the original, 100% cotton versions. Can't imagine they'd ditch those - but then again, I've been astounded at the moves made by some, no many, companies in the past, in terms of abandoning wildly successful models or lines.

Need to go get some. Current pair get used a lot, they do eventually wear out (mine always start to fray on the thigh, just below the big pocket).

In my experience I find cotton better in the sand box/desert, but some of the very light nylon/synthetic stuff has been better in the humid tropics.

393 '70s Craftsman and Snap On forgings came from the same house, and went only to different finishing contractors from there.

They were too near identical in form and feel, otherwise.

Today's "Craftsman" are un-finished crusty-finish forgings, with
only the tool areas and label-flats machined smooth for stampings.

The Lowe's line of Kobalt tools is finished to a far higher standard.

Almost to the old Craftsman standard.

Go figure?

That must be before my time, because since the extreme late 70's I never remember craftsman being anything other than rough forgings with the only machining done was on contact surfaces, like the part of the wrench that actually grabs the bolt. I still see those wrenches and ratchets in my drawers ever time I'm in there, and they're almost 40 years old. I can see them being forged at the same place though. They were definitely strong ass tools. I never broke one, and I still have a shit ton of them. I use them when I have to screw with a car and the tools might end up on the ground. The snap on stuff never sees the ground. lol

398 Good outdoor and climbing gear was made rugged, which made it a good value. So it was inevitable in a way that it would become a fashion in its own right, but then it is probably also inevitable that the lroducts will drift away from what made them popular in the first place, top quality materials, design, and construction. Nobody is going to wear out a parka slogging through the parking lot to their car, so why make it bombproof, with double re-inforced stitching, cordura, and all those design features for extended backcountry use. Nobody will notice, except for someone who didn't get the memo.

Craftsman tools are junk now, by all accounts. Sockets breaking. Recycled beer cans only go so far.

Do you remember the bench top brand of tools Kmart used to sell in the 90's? I had a car mechanic friend who used to rant about how good they were for dirt cheap. He worked in the auto section of K mart and he would tell me how he beat those tools. Finally I said ok, lets go, I'm going to buy $50 worth and I'll turn them to dust in a week. I saw the wrenches, and they looked like the older snap-on wrenches with the older style font, and they looked nice, and they were $20. I bought a 3 piece wobble extension set for $7, and a torx bit socket set for around $15, and a string of 3/8 sockets for $12. I told my friend at that price they'll be unrecognizable in a week. I'll be damned, they never broke, and the wrenches were so nice that my new at the time snap-on wrenches sat unused for years, and I'm still using the damn things as my main wrenches. I use the snap-on only when I need more leverage because they are longer.

Because Chrome Vanadium would react as a corrosive electrolyte if scratched against the Titanium surfaces of the aforementioned airframe.

And tossed the damn thing across the garage into the trash can in disgust. The next day I thought better of it and went to fish it out only to find that Little, for the first time in months (probably because I growled at him in no uncertain terms "Get ALL the trash out this week, no being lazy!" because of all the Christmas waste), had actually emptied the bin in my shop. In tools, "Chrome Vanadium" refers to the steel alloy used for the body of the tool, and not the plating.

I just bought, for my "road box" tools, a 203-piece set of Stanley "black chrome" tools that look like Snap-On knockoffs. 72-tooth ratchets in 1/4 3/8, and 1/2" drive. FWIW, Ace doesn't do a lot of banning, that usually falls to us, and we usually discuss it in the COBS email group before or afterwards. When Ace does get on a banning spree, being a COB can be like being the priests of an angry god. We just stand back and let the chips fall where they may. I just did a search in my email for "Uncle Palp" and got no hits. So, either

#1 Ace banned him and didn't say anything. It happens, he's the boss
#2 a COB banned him and didn't say anything, which would be unusual
#3 I deleted and removed all of the email discussion on the banning, which I can't remember ever doing

Take your pick.

Way back in the 80s. But I went up in style - the Canadian Forces' DC-3. They told me it had been sold to Honduras in the 60s or something, then repurchased early 80s. They had some electronic thingamabobs (technical term) installed in the wings, something to do with radar training.

We were delayed for a day by the exotic (to me) condition of an "ice fog" in Edmonchuk. Sadly the Oilers were not in town for a game, but did get a tour of the parliament. These were the days of "Sheikh" Lougheed (sp?). It was funny. There was one/1/uno opposition member in parliament, so his chair sat there, facing all the others - more like a theater for a show trial than a parliament.

Go take the tour of the USS Alabama, just East of Mobile.

It is the ONLY BB with the lower turret cut open to allow a tour within the barbette itself.

Every part and operation is there for you to observe.

It brings it all into focus.

Not an IOWA, but still a 16 in Naval Rifle. Same manual of arms in the turret, etc.

Their placards discuss the IOWA disaster, at length.

And the open spaces to tour the engine rooms, reduction gears and boilers, have to be seen to be understood.

I don't think there's another museum ship anywhere with comparable access.

One of the characteristically hilarious aspects of the whole thing - ace would usually frame the banning in indirect terms, not even use the nics, and go on a rant about the sort of thing that resulted in the ban. Half the time I don't think anyone even knew what he was talking about. But it's fine - his place, it was funny and quirky, and it's doubtful the bannee didn't deserve it.

I don't remember anything about 17 hos. I do remember that he was very much in love with a Vietnamese woman, and talked at great length about her and getting to know her family, and making wedding plans.

The best case scenario I can imagine is that she or her family changed their minds and called off the wedding, and he was too embarrassed to come back here.

527 My late Uncle was a USAF Test Pilot, out at Edwards AFB in the '60s.

Mostly flying helicopter stuff, but he had to stay current in the zoomies, all the same.

One fine weekend, he was going to take my late Dad up in an F-104 twin seater. They were both all suited up, briefed and approved.

Only to be bounced by a One Star, who needed to get his "hours" in to keep his flight pay intact.

And that was as close as my Dad got to going up in the '104.

But at least I got to go out on two or three subs. Once was a Tiger Cruise.

The others... "didn't happen".

Post maintenance day shakedowns were funny that way in the early '70s.

None of the stage coach or wagon makers were ever successful automobile builders.

Those that had investment in the old technology were the last to invest in the new technology. History tells us this time and time again.

Ford Motor Company has eliminated cars from their future manufacturing plans, only trucks and SUV's, and nearly all of their R and D is in either driverless cars, or flying cars. They at least read history books.

Of course with any general statement, there is an exception.

Capitalism is funny like that. But generally, the "old way" is so ingrained in the company culture and is considered important, to protect or extend the value of the existing technology. The new way of looking at things, with the new upstart, has no problem shucking the existing technology or investment, because there isn't any.

697 No, Jewells, I think this is all the day shift now.

698 688 Sure. Go with that.

Since all of the legal people are going with it I will too. SCOTUS ruled that federal laws were supreme over State in laws in 1920 and a court case specifically affirmed that in 1987.

The act was expressly upheld as constitutional in 1987 by the United States Supreme Court in South Dakota v. Dole.

699 PA insisted on my passport AND actual social security card (which I hadn't seen, nor had anybody wanted in forty years). So I went to the SS office with my passport and got another SS card.

701 Well then, I'm proud that Wisconsin is in the vanguard of resisting federal encroachment !
Not to mention how much I'm looking forward to the spectacle of a couple of fibbies trying to arrest a family out of some rural tavern for breaking this law !

Forward !

702 I have an urgent request from the prayer list from Ladyl:

A very close friend was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma over 6 years ago. The disease, until very recently, remained dormant. The cancer has become active and is aggressive and hard to treat. Please pray for remission and a return to good health.

I will put it on the prayer list for Wednesday's Daily Rant, but just wanted to get it out here now. Also, for those that didn't see it, WeirdDave has a prayer request above i for a 2 1/2 year old boy (Lincoln) he knows who has high risk neuroblastoma. Thanks

704 I find it ironic that the real ID act as interpreted by mindless Obamanite bureaucrats requires all kind of documentation for a driver's license but all the Democrats insist on no requirements for voting.

Of course we give a hoot.! We care about you! We're a family here and when people disappear it's disconcerting. I feel that way about people who have contacted me about prayer requests and then I don't here from them and can't get in touch because my last hard drive with their contact information crashed and I don't have the funds to get it repaired so I have no idea how they're doing.

Priorities, comrade, priorities!

Besides the Dems are the ones counting the votes, so...

710 Some states edge around the RealID law by issuing two different classes of drivers license, one is compliant, the other isn't.
Only difference is a little star in the upper right corner.
Which ought to be the only one acceptable for voting.

711 YouTube has a live clip of the Moody Blues in concert singing "Wildest Dreams", from 2008 I think. Can't tell it from the album cut from 40 years ago. How do they keep their vocal cords intact?
