The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"I voted for Trump. Now his wall may destroy my butterfly paradise. The Republican party is abandoning the conservative principles I treasured. Right now, in Mission, Texas, we don’t worry about immigrants who crossed the border illegally or drug smugglers. We worry about having to defend our private property from seizure by the federal government."Naturalist Luciano Guerra

Quote II

Texas stands with Israel. Period.”Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX)

Quote III

“I have been at probably every powerful table that you can think of,” Obama said. “I have worked at nonprofits, I have been at foundations, I have worked in corporations, served on corporate boards, I have been at G-summits, I have sat in at the U.N.: They are not that smart.Michelle Obama

Quote IV

“I do what I think is right. I know I will get the criticism from the public or from the media, but I will do what is right and what I feel is right for the country and for the people.”Melania Trump

Quote V

"I don't like talking politics, and I don't think politics and music mix. I really frown on musicians who get up on a platform and start talking about the president or complain about – I just don't think it belongs. I'm an entertainer. There's no reason to bring up politics. Let me play my guitar and write songs and entertain people. That's my job.”Ace Frehley

An "alleged" pedophile walks, why you ask? It seems that the District Attorney showed up to court three sheets to the wind.

A pedophile walked free despite his plans to admit to molesting a 13 year-old boy because his prosecutor turned up to court drunk. Charges against Dennis Simmerman, 23, were dropped despite the planned guilty plea after attorney Michelle Rivera, 42, appeared ‘slurring her words and stumbling her feet.’ Simmerman, who also texted his underage victim, had been set up admit third-degree sexual abuse and disemminating obscene material to a minor on October 18 this year.

Did he or didn't he? Ex-Uber engineer claims he drove cross country in self-driving car.

Anthony Levandowski, the controversial engineer at the heart of a lawsuit between Uber and Waymo, claims to have built an automated car that drove from San Francisco to New York without any human intervention.

The 3,099-mile journey started on 26 October on the Golden Gate Bridge, and finished nearly four days later on the George Washington Bridge in Manhattan.

The car, a modified Toyota Prius, used only video cameras, computers and basic digital maps to make the cross-country trip.

Levandowski told the Guardian that, although he was sitting in the driver’s seat the entire time, he did not touch the steering wheels or pedals, aside from planned stops to rest and refuel. “If there was nobody in the car, it would have worked,” he said.

If true, this would be the longest recorded road journey of an autonomous vehicle without a human having to take control. Elon Musk has repeatedly promised, and repeatedly delayed, one of his Tesla cars making a similar journey.

I enjoy music and concerts. Any concert who didn't want men to attend, hey no problem I wouldn't want to go.

A Swedish government agency for fighting social inequality has officially (and ironically) declared the feminist-oriented Statement Festival’s stated policy of barring entrance to “cis-men” to be an act of gender discrimination.
The first annual Statement Festival took place in Gothenburg, Sweden in late August, making headlines all over the world not due to the fact that the concert featured exclusively women, non-binary and transgender performers but because it demanded the audience also come from these categories. Regardless of the seemingly questionable marketing decision to cut off half of their consumer base, about 5,000 people attended and around 80% of tickets were sold, the event’s organizers told the Local. While the Festival drew crowds, it also drew a lot of criticism, and these concerns have now reached the state level.

The fact that the concert was billed as being “male-free”, has been ruled as an act of discrimination according to the Swedish Discrimination Ombudsman (DO).

A kinder, gentler obitiuary for The Weakly Weekly Standard.

When it was announced that The Weekly Standard would shut down last week, many journalists and politicos lamented its end, and understandably so. The neoconservative flagship that Kristol founded and led for most of its existence was hailed as a “jewel of American conservatism” and a home for “solid reporting and strong writing.” Its demise represented a “closing of the conservative mind.”

I do not intend to dispute or debate those sentiments. To build something that reached such prominence only to see it shuttered so rapidly after 23 years must be heartbreaking. I feel sorry for former staffers who now find themselves jobless. I’ve been in their shoes. But for all the considerable good that his magazine did, it was Kristol who wanted to close the conservative mind, especially to antiwar thought.

Pickles on burgers? Yes. Deep fried pickles? Delish. Pickle pie? Think I'll pass, no offense Pistol Packing Pastry Chef.

Along state route 24 in south-central Utah, the Sunglow Restaurant and Motel sells the same unconventional pies they’ve been known for since the 1960s. Located in the tiny town of Bicknell (population: 321, as of 2017), this eatery is situated 13 miles west of Capitol Reef National Park. A full assessment of flavor choices might leave you wondering if you’re looking at the right menu. Apart from classics such as apple or blueberry, you’ll find oatmeal, sour cream, buttermilk, avocado lime, pinto bean, and pickle pies.

Previously The ONT covered State Senator Kevin Parker (D-NY) and
his desire to have potential gun purchasers turn over their social media passwords so the government can determine if they are "worthy" of owning a gun.

So will Sen. Parker be able to get a gun after his outrageous comments?

A New York state senator apologized Tuesday afternoon after publicly telling a Republican aide to kill herself.

Candice Giove, the deputy communications director for the New York state Senate's Republican majority, on Twitter accused Democratic State Senator Kevin Parker of misusing a parking placard and blocking a bike lane. In response, Parker simply wrote back, "Kill yourself!" Giove, naturally, was shocked, asking, "Did a Senator just write this to me?

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) shows once again he is a class act.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 18 2018
SNL cast member Pete Davidson was in the news this week after sharing a troubling social media post: one where he stated he didn’t want to live in this world anymore. Among the people calling to check in on him was Representative Dan Crenshaw. Yes, the eye patch guy from a few months ago (see Navy SEAL Mocked by SNL Won’t Demand Apology, Has Better Idea and Dan Crenshaw Appears on SNL’s ‘Weekend Update’ to Roast Pete Davidson).

What the congressman had to say is something I feel we can all stand to hear.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at December 19, 2018 10:28 PM (oGNNA)

No.

They have a fiduciary duty to the company, like anyone else. Most aren't major stockholders (although major stock holders, practically, have the most say on who is on the board, so sometimes they appoint themselves.)

They kind of represent shareholders, but not really. Shareholders are the owners of stock in a legal entity called a corporation. So their best interests are, in theory, aligned with that of the corporation they own. The Board has a fiduciary duty to do what is best for the corporation.

So in theory, their interests should be aligned.

But in practice, the officers run the company, the board basically meets a few times a year in awesome locations, pull a huge salary, and just vote on things that are presented to them.

They are technically in charge though and can fire the CEO and whatnot.

Some underthing was showing up in a 12 inch square grid. I was just about to buy "engineered wood" when at the last minute, I looked at how thin the veneer was and switched to hardwood. At mass last Sunday I did pray "My God, What have I done!"
Anyway, after ripping up the carpet and sanding the concrete slab, with the help of family, as of right now, The ceiling and walls are painted. and 39 of 56 rows of wood floor are down. Please pray for me. I was so sore on Monday that I took two days off to deal with other things (like the PEX hot water line to the back of the house springing a leak). With God's help, aided by your prayers, I will finish the floor on Friday, do the quarter-round and painting of the baseboard of Saturday, move the furniture back in on Sunday and enjoy Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in peace. I don't care how sore I am. There will be adult beverages.

Not sure what qualifies as "normal."

Our house, a rental thank God, sank 6 inches in one corner and 4 in another. Was pretty cool seeing all that gooey mud squirting up around the foundation. Then the cracking began. So far, the framing has held together and it is still properly attached to the settling foundation. There is not a level surface in the entire house and none of the doors close. The landlord came and framed a new front door, so at least that works.

We are still having aftershocks, some in the 4 range. It has become a thing guessing the magnitude. Pretty funny stuff.

And then it snowed 16 inches, so everything is rather magical.

DH and the boy are off to WI for Christmas, so it's me, the dogs, and visits to my parents'. And a lot of shoveling.

The Mountiesasked my mother that. They also asked if she we're re having an affair, I guess in the idea she might have bumped him off .My mother told me this years later-not at the time. As terrible as it sounds. I would rather my father just died in Canada intentionally or unnientionally-not than that he left a wife in her early forties and nine and thirteen year old daughters to run off with another woman because that would make him a SOB. He never was that to any of us
Posted by: FenelonSpoke

Sometimes with Alzeimer's you don't realize how bad it is. With my father and mother, it was pretty far along before it was diagnosed and we realized how bad it was, and I was seeing them once or twice a week. Most of the time they can seem okay, but they have occasional episodes.

My father told me that he would be driving on the freeway, get off at an exit, and not know where he was or where he was going. He told me about these episodes years after they occurred. He didn't tell us at the time, because he didn't want to lose his independence. After the occasional episode, he'd go back to seeming okay.

If your father was in the early stages of Alzeimer's, and lived in an out of the way place, he could have wandered off somewhere. Sorry you never had closure. That has to be tough.

Many people don't anything particularly notable in their lives. They study, get a job, hopefully have people who love them and do the best they can everyday. Sometimes that is their purpose-just doing what they have to do every day without a lot of drama and they as Paul puts it repeatedly in his letters "Stand firm" without going off the rails and hurting people in the process. Homeopathic flu medicine called Oscillococcinum™, usually available at a health food store, is a great and highly effective placebo; our family has used it for years. Works as cure and preventative. Bunch of tiny sugar pills in a tube. Half a tube once a week during flu season as a preventative says our apothecarian as he drives off in his Lexus. Also, it's homeopathy - will not interfere with any other drugs because there's scientifically "nothing there."

Glued down striped shag carpet on beautiful doug fir floors. Every piece of wood trim basically painted through out the 2 story colonial.

394 tcn in AK #220:
We are still having aftershocks, some in the 4 range.

Holy crow! Must be like living in a bouncy house.

As I understand it...

In places like California, where the plates collide and the substrate is all cracked and crumbly, you can get many quakes big and small, but the effects tend to be highly localized. A real rocker - an 8.x - will destroy freeways and old buildings, but not affect as wide an area as...

...out here in the bedrock plains, where we get a really big quake, say, Madrid 1811-1812, and the waves travel long and far, like, ringing churchbells in Philly. A "mere" 5.x pulls houses off their foundations hundreds of miles away. (Rattled our concrete bunker; woke me up; thought a locomotive was in the driveway before I realized, quake!)

So, I'm wondering whether Alaska is more Bedrock than Crumbly shores.

That big Alaska quake in 1964 was one of my first realizations of what quakes could do.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_Alaska_earthquake

The music almost died away ... then it burst like a pent-up flood;
And it seemed to say, "Repay, repay," and my eyes were blind with blood.
The thought came back of an ancient wrong, and it stung like a frozen lash,
And the lust awoke to kill, to kill ... then the music stopped with a crash,
And the stranger turned, and his eyes they burned in a most peculiar way;
In a buckskin shirt that was glazed with dirt he sat, and I saw him sway;
Then his lips went in in a kind of grin, and he spoke, and his voice was calm,
And "Boys," says he, "you don't know me, and none of you care a damn;
But I want to state, and my words are straight, and I'll bet my poke they're true,
That one of you is a hound of hell. . .and that one is Dan McGrew."

the issue is not the repeating the issue is that you seem to have omitted a word.

my guess is that you meant to say something along the lines of your sil humped you in front of your wife, however since you left the word "you" out it is not clear.

if it makes you feel better no one else got it either.

Ohhhhkayyyy, I was gone and now I see what's been happening in my absence.

NUMBER ONE, the retail clerk isn't "obsessing" on what happened 17 years ago. She merely told the story. Simple. She says she gets a smile every year when she hangs her Star. It brings back a wicked but fun memory. So what's with begrudging her a smile?

NUMBER TWO, she never claimed to do it "for Christmas" or "in the spirit of Christmas." She did it to teach an old Scrooge-bat a lesson, and she admits it.

Just today I saw several stories here about how people got back at schoolyard bullies decades ago, and those stories were told with a large dose of relish and then congratulated by others.

So ease up on the retail clerk. She's just sharing and enjoying her memory of a time when she came out on top of a bully.

Here's a DIY guide for doing that: https://bit.ly/2UXrtUN

What you need to strip the floor will probably be dictated by what was used to seal it in the first place. If it was a polyurethane sealer, you'll probably need some protective equipment, or just hire that part out. Let them damage their lungs.

The good news is, once it's stripped you can use whatever product you like for the new sealer.

I think when Michelle O says she's sat at the most powerful tables and they're not that smart, her intent is solely to insult wypipo -- whymen especially. She's talking to her followers and telling them not to be intimidated.

The thing is, she's probably right, because she's always sitting with liberals. Bloviating, ignorant, hypocritical, out-of-touch, lazy-minded elitists who'd rather die than drink a lukewarm latte and rather drink a lukewarm latte than think things through.

Guest stars on tonight's episode of Mannix on MeTV include Fionnula Flanagan, Joseph Campanella, Laraine Stephens, and Burgess Meredith.

The Crimson Halo: Mannix is hired by attorney Noah Otway to find out why someone tried
to kill Otway's client, Dr. Graham Aspinall, a renowned surgeon whose
specialty is removing tumors that are otherwise believed to be
inoperable. Despite the doctor's denials that anyone has a motive to
kill him, Mannix comes to believe otherwise when he barely saves
Aspinall from a second attempt on his life. And Mannix discovers that
there are several people who might have a motive to kill Dr. Aspinall --
including the second-in-command at his medical institute; the boyfriend
of one of Aspinall's research assistants; and even his wife.

Welcome to the wonderful world of affirmative action.

One of the reasons why Michelle has such a chip on her shoulder is she knows she was not subjected to the same standards that the typical Princeton student was subject to.

There are certainly excellent black students at elite schools, but there are a lot of black students there merely to get the minority numbers up.

Caltech, which probably comes closest to a pure merit-based admissions standard, has 1% black students (and 40% Asian).

This generates a lot of rage in people who suspect that the only reason why they are at an elite institution is skin color.

You can thank Lucy, Lucille Ball, for saving Mannix. The first season, where Mannix worked for Campanella at the high tech PI/surveillance firm with all the fancy computers, was a flop.

It was Lucy, who was still head of Desilu at the time, who revamped it. She didn't like computers.

And you can also thank Lucy for helping get Star Trek on the air. The first pilot with Captain Pike was a flop with the suits -- they deemed it "too cerebral".

Lucy, good friends with Rodenberry, helped convinced said suits to give him another chance with a second pilot.

So you can thank Lucy for both Mannix and Star Trek.

One of the big reasons is that they are just naturally inclined toward government. It doesn't matter what the question is, the answer is a government program. People who think that's more true than not tend to find themselves in the Democrat camp, and people who think it's less tue tend to find themselves in the Republican camp. So if you're looking at who runs government, that's naturally going to be Democrats as a rule. That's why we need to reduce government wherever it crops up.
