No-NT

So, 2 days until the end of open enrollment, do you really think I have time to write a full ONT? Ha!

Son.jpg

So you're going to get a couple of links, a twitter embed or two and no commentary from me (Best. ONT. Ever.). Basically what I can throw together in the 15 minutes before my next appointment.

7 Hmmm.

Well, on-topic (I read the first sentence, at least), as I noted yesterday, I know someone in CA, a classic victim of O-care's destruction of the individual insurance "market"*. He has manipulated his income since the onset of O-care, to qualify for that crap, thanks to the instant 300% premium increases that brought to individual policies. This year, his subsidized premium went up 2,000% (big numbers come from the fact both are actually small numbers - but the change is still worth noting).

Hey - maybe the GOP can run on a platform of repealing O-care! Somebody send an email to the RNC - that should be a sure-fire campaign stance, dontcha think???

* use of the word "market" in connection with most insurance is mostly ironic, or in the case of medical matters, entirely ironic

80 My scouting experience was probably between bth and Calm Mentor's. I learned a lot of practical how-to woodcraft and survival, did a lot of camping and canoeing and hiking that I wouldn't have otherwise done. I didn't realize at the time that hiking a few miles through the woods, preparing a campsite, building a fire, and packing everything back out would be one of those "now I've done it, I know how to do it again and that I could do it again" things.

As far as the "administrative" side of it, I never made Eagle - I thought I got to Star, but I found a Life patch on my shirt when I brought a box of my old stuff from my parents' basement recently, so I must have finished that before I quit going. It wasn't the most fun I ever had nor the worst, but it was certainly worth having done. Order of the Arrow, I think, meant more from a personal accomplishment point of view than any of the merit badge stuff.

82 The movie Looper bothered me a great deal that psychic abilities were a part of the plot. And by the way, very tangential and could have been changed easily. The little Dameon has psychic powers? Well hey change the story to "he will be the next Hitler" because that is historical, and so feed into the main premise of time travel. You there, script-writer! You get one premise, one premise only, and if it's interesting I will buy a ticket. If you can't go twenty miles on one premise you are lazy. I could go twenty miles on time travel, and I'm not a real writer.

Then there's Japan. They want ALL the premises and ALL the genres in whatever show, that they can toggle like stops on a great organ.

90 Things I remember about the Boy Scouts:

Some time in the 90s, they made a policy of no longer allowing gay scout masters because boys were being abused and they wanted to protect the boys and they were also losing a lot of money in lawsuits from the victims.

Levi's announced they were cutting off their donations to BSA because of their homophobic and discriminatory policy.

Normal people boycott Levi's and Levi's loses a bunch of business and blames it on Americans not appreciating quality anymore. Levi's moves production overseas to save labor costs.

170 That "moneywise" article on worst States for retirement left a lot to be desired. They downrated States for shit that should be in the individual retiree's wheelhouse, like a high rate of tobacco use by seniors, for example. I'm a non-smoking senior. Why should I give a shit if many of my contemporaries smoke? I can buy their stuff cheap when they croak.

And they whine about hurricanes, or tornadoes. Meh, if I choose to settle in storm country, or earthquake country, it's up to me to buy or build a home that can stand up to what Ma Nature deals out.

Biggest issue is taxes, then home prices, then cost of living.

My Catholic grade school had a Troop. I wouldn't join it because I spent hours every weekday with those assholes, so why would I want to spend my weekends camping with them, too? I joined a Troop at a nearby Episcopal Church. Funniest part was when I was received my Eagle Scout rank. The first row in the Episcopal Church was full of nuns in habits. But not joining my school's Troop was one of my best early life decisions because I do have some great memories, including the memory of my Scoutmaster, Mr. Ira C. Erwin (all his personal gear was labeled 'ICE'; probably get in trouble for that today), a true adult rebel (which is a life lesson in its own right). He hated our local Council, calling them clowns. We never went to our Council's summer camp 45 minutes away. Instead, we went to another Council's summer camp 2 plus hours away.

I remember stopping by to visit him while in college. While there, two Naval aviators also stopped by who were his Scouts before my time. Not many Scout leaders engender such affection (in a good way; getyermindsouttathegutter people!). Thank you Mr. Erwin. You done good.

Sorry you had such a shitty experience, BTH.

The one that shocked me, even as a crude young guy, was a disheveled drunk looming over a hot chick passed out on a couch and leering.

Yeah, we have that, too.

Talk about hand washing after wrenching, here's a pro tip: use the white gel hand cleaner, like DL or GoJo, work it into your hands, and then add a little bit of washing soda (sodium carbonate, not bicarbonate). It acts like grit in the mostly water-free lanolin-based hand cleaner, and helps scrub dirt out of the ridges in your skin. Then rinse your hands with warm water, and the washing soda helps dissolve the lanolin, and turn it into actual soap. Your hands wind up real clean, and not slimy or sticky. Washing soda is a mild base, and does not sting or burn, if used sparingly in this fashion.

Getting badges was something you did on your own time and taught yourself. Camping and hiking? AFAIK, they didn't do much of that, if any. After we had moved to a more rural area, my brother wanted to get involved, but between my dad being tightfisted (they were poorly funded) and unenthusiastic I don't know if they did much. If the adults don't give a shit, neither will the kids. I did more in RAs than I did in scouts, but I had to drop that when we started moving around.

It very well could.

~He laughed
inwardly, with a pleasantly reticent chuckle, as he thought of Lady
Carbury dealing with his views of Protestantism,--as he thought also
of the numerous historical errors into which that clever lady must
inevitably fall in writing about matters of which he believed her to
know nothing. But he was quite alive to the fact that a favourable
notice in the "Breakfast Table" of his very thoughtful work, called
the "New Tale of a Tub," would serve him, even though written by the
hand of a female literary charlatan, and he would have no compunction
as to repaying the service by fulsome praise in the "Literary
Chronicle."

...okay. So I meet this stripper who works up the street. We'll call her "Melanie". "Melanie" is into me and "nobody really gets the strippers.". ...So my idiot friends keep reminding me.

...well, I do. For the price of one lap-dance. Ten bucks to have a woman help me up the stairs and make magic all over Your Friendly Neighborhood Slapweasel.

Here's the thing: She's a 'Stripper With a Heart of Gold' and doesn't do blow-jobs.

WTF, right?

I could have seen this in many ways... "She's a stripper that likes my personality and she's Not That Kind of Girl."

..."She hates blow-jobs."

..."She could be the Mother of my Children and perhaps she's right."

-OR

..."This doesn't suck and for all the wrong reasons."

I chose the Final Solution and dumped her within a month.

I didn't kill her.

She wasn't Jewish.

730 Has anyone here read Trollope? I've seen him referenced and wondered about picking one up.

Posted by: AmericanKestrel at December 14, 2018 01:42 AM (IDhUW)

Yes. Quite a few of his books, actually. While his Barchester Chronicles series, about a church vicarage, are good, IMHO, the best of the lot is his 'The Pallisers' series of novels. (The books were made into a very good BBC production, 1974-75, as seen here on PBS titled, aptly, 'The Pallisers', with the scrumptious Susan Hampshire; that show is also known for the introduction of Jeremy Irons.) By today's standards, the books are a bore due to the long-drawn out plots. But if you enjoy books satirizing the foibles of the English nobility and clergy, they are a fun read.

I will say this about Trollope the writer: He worked for the post office. He'd get up at five every morning to write until time to go to work around 7. By keeping to such a schedule, he was able to crank out quite a few books. If Trollope had the internet back in his day, along with the ONT, he would never have written one sentence of one paragraph of one page of one chapter of one book.

734 you should never date strippers. everyone should date a stripper at least once. but don't do it, it will turn out as badly as everyone tells you.

sure it would seem like the great thing to do when you are in college, with your dads credit card, blowing a wad of his money at the club. then it is really cool when she hits the college parties with you and brings her friends. but then when you take your out for lunch, in the daylight, with clothes and no make up, well.

I really don't think he understands how the organization was killed, gutted, and worn as a skin suit. While all the time demanding respect.

Top o ta morning to ya. Hope all is serene in Baltimore County.

I think the fact that the American people have watched that arch criminal tip toe through the rain drops of malfeasance for over forty years had more to to with it than Obama.

And good morning to you as well my friend...

Are you prepared to strike fear into the hearts of killjoy leftists wherever they may dwell?

If so...

Show me your war face?

They wanted money? After what they did to a great organization? That takes a special case of cluelessness.

I was part of the 9/12/09 March on Washington, and a counter-protester in the DC Metro for years. My favorites were the Anti-G5 rallies outside the World Bank.

I am doing something like that this morning. OPSEC on the details. But it involves some highly self-important people and their crass desires. Alas, it is like reasoning with needy children.

For your larger issue, we need secure comms, a way around a panopticon society, and large numbers. Don't throw down at every Reichstag Fire provocation.

828 "They wanted money? After what they did to a great organization? That takes a special case of cluelessness."

No, they weren't asking for money.

Just the promise that they are committed to staying the course, as their work is too important to stop doing.

And mostly quiet but foggy here in the Land o' Liberals this morning.

I hear Betsy Ohr was a HAM operator and that's how she and her fellow conspirators communicated.

Maybe we can go the HAM, C Band and BBS route for comms?

or good old fashioned Caesar Cypher and carrier pigeons?

Anything keyed to a mic and over the air is intercepted. For some, by NSA, others, your local police.

For emails Google is pretty strong with storage and analysis. I sure would like to see my file there.

832 Biggest thing here seems to be the White House and one of the city's black Ministers working together to identify and gain support/funding for depressed areas in the city under the 2017 changes to the tax code.

Because it has the stench of Trump on it, all our city and State leaders could do was say "OrangeManBad" and find other things to do instead of meeting with the White House on this matter.

To it's credit, local talk radio is flame spraying our Democratic leadership for punishing the cities poorest in their efforts to portray Trump as evil.

I got to listen to over an hour of callers yesterday while coming back from the VA, and not a single caller, many identifying as black, or inner city residents, was happy with the Democratic leadership in the city and State.

It's a Hell of a lesson.

You gotta' be careful - at the very onset of creating such an organization - about what exactly your core principles are. Because you can't give in on a single one.

There pretty much is no such thing as a secure from government monitoring and tracking and penetration.

Government took over hushmail and TOR.

Like I said the only secure comms would be written or typed encrypted comms delivered by couriers and that's about it.

Posted by: Kreplach at December 14, 2018 06:42 AM (qxq6t)

840 "They may complain but they will vote Donk 10:1 every time."

Not necessarily.

In the Mid-term, the incumbent Republican Governor enjoyed voter support in the city that was out of alignment with the Dem/Rep ratio of voters in the city.

When given an opportunity to pull the lever for the "I'll give you free stuff" Democratic Socialist candidate, a not small number of city residents chose to support the Republican.

At what point do we quit playing? Here is a typical game:

Halftime: LBGTASDFJKL; Woke as Fuk Marching Band
3rd Q: Goalpost on movable platforms
4th Q: They moved to a new field and reset score
