Google CEO: After an Extensive Investigation, We Have Determined That the Russian Campaign Against the Very Foundations of Our Democracy Spent... Four Thousand, Seven Hundred Dollars on Ads. Total.

Well. Let's do what the leftwingers and cuck neocons want and drop a few Unscheduled Sunrise bombs on Moscow then, huh?

Russia spent as much money on ads to "compromise" our election as the average teenager spends on a used scooter.

Pinchai refused to answer whether a smart phone could be used to track his movements across the room:

For example, Rep. Ted Poe (R–TX) held his iPhone aloft and repeatedly demanded whether Google would be able to use his phone to track him if he moved across the room. In response, Pichai began to explain that it depends what apps and services he has on his phone and what permissions he gave them.

Poe sharply cut him off: "This is a yes or no question."

Pichai tried again … it depends. “I genuinely don’t know without knowing what services-- "

"It's not a trick question -- you make $100 million a year, you ought to be able to answer that question!" Poe yelled. "I'm shocked you don’t know...most Americans don't know what this phone can do."

The typical Twitter Pests are making an issue that Poe was asking about an iPhone rather than an Android phone, the latter being the one made by Google, but of course an Android phone is designed to be a tracking device in your pocket, and Pichai understood what Poe was asking about.

Video here.

There's a world of difference between what (and how) Google collects and disseminates consumer data, and how Apple does. Apple is, in simple terms, a very safe company by comparison given how it anonymizes information and given how its location services work (compared to Google). Phone location tracking is one good example.

Are you using an iPhone? If not, then your smart phone is a Google product. Sure, you don't use Google Maps. But do you use Waze, which doesn't have Google's name at all associated with it? Because if you use Waze to show you where to go when you're driving, then you're using a Google product.

Alphabet makes some of the stuff easy to avoid. Don't use Chrome for your browser. Don't use Google to search. Don't use GMail (though my last job used gmail for its corporate e-mails). Don't ever go to YouTube. But some of their stuff requires a little digging to link with them.

Well, the TC2000, if it had the V8 installed, became the 3500. I don't recall if it still carried the "TC" designation. But the first-generation 3500's were outwardly similar to the TC2000's. The second-generation 3500 was very different.

It also demonstrates how effective advertising on Facebook really is, and how susceptible Facebook users are to ads.

Of course, with 4 billion losers, even a small percentage would be enough to swing an election if all you need are a few thousand more votes.

As California has shown, all you really need are the names of registered voters. Any one that doesn't vote, gets an absentee ballot filled out in their name.

I figure this is a new tradition in Europe. Christmas time = time for a moozie to kill a bunch of holiday revelers.

A hundred years from now, the little brown children of Europe will be gathered round their classrooms, and the teacher will ask "Hey kids, do you know why every year we let a small group of white people out of their cages, and engage in the ritual stabbing, running over or blowing up? That's right! Nobody knows, but it's fun to do, right?"

There's a world of difference between what (and how) Google collects
and disseminates consumer data, and how Apple does. Apple is, in simple
terms, a very safe company by comparison given how it anonymizes
information and given how its location services work (compared to
Google). Phone location tracking is one good example.

Apple wants you to be a captive customer to their products and hardware.

Google wants to sell you to everyone else.

Technically, the Google Asshole was correct -- with an iPhone, you have the option to "turn off" the tracking feature if you go into every single app's setting and disable the tracking stuff. No way! It's super easy, barely an inconvenience.

What you do is have a guy, someone real shady, buy a bunch of stolen flip phones out of the trunk of his 1993 Camry, have another guy who sells stolen sim cards out of his 1997 Geo Tracker, put them together in random order, whenever you want to make a call, then make the call, then take the used phone and sim card out, buy some stolen weather balloons from a guy with a beard, driving a 2002 Subaru Impreza, launch the flip phone in one balloon, the sim card in another, and the cindered ashes of the guys who sold you all of the above in still another... and they won't be able to track you.

See. Easy.

Additionally, there is really nothing to keep Google, Apple, or the government from listening through you microphone or watching you through the camera when ever they want.

As a matter of fact, it's almost certain that both are always on and being analyzed by the NSA on a constant basis. You should also assume that all of your conversations, texts, emails, browser and search history are also in possession of the government (at a minimum).

This happened to me yesterday:

I ALREADY have the built-in camera and microphone on my home computer taped-over and blocked. With 5 layers of tape. Did that years ago.

EVEN SO, yesterday. someone in my home yelled to people in the other room, while laughing, "Did you see that photo of such-and-such celebrity in yoga pants? She's so fat! It's gross!"

And then TEN MINUTES LATER I got a pop-up ad on my screen for goddamn YOGA PANTS!

Even though i have never ever searched for yoga pants, do not own yoga pants, etc.

All cell phones in the house were turned off/shut-down/OFF and in desk drawers. The computer's microphone is taped over. I do not own an Alexa or Dot-type device.

Probably thought that you were lying, and had something to hide.

Given the stupid stuff - particularly anti-employer stuff - that people post on their social media pages, it's not uncommon for employers to want to see your Facebook page. Some of them will ask for your login credentials. I've heard that the proper response in such situations is to refuse to provide the credentials, but offer to log in on your own device so that they can look things over from your account's PoV, and make sure that you're not hiding nasty comments about your previous employers.

Personally, I stick with the request made by one of my previous employers - i.e. don't identify your employer in social media. Even if you don't disparage your employer, people who get upset with you can still use that info to pressure your employer to get you fired.

Tape blocks cameras pretty well. But tape over the microphone grille doesn't help much. The laptop screen acts like a sounding board, and the mic still "hears" ambient sound.

Remove the mic altogether, or at least snip the wire. There are plenty of plug-in mics available if you need one.

Why would you want to be off of the grid? Embrace those big balls and proudly sway them for all to see gently to and fro like the people of Whoville embracing and singing a joyous Christmas song.

Because your smart devices are listening to you and essentially narking on you.
Posted by: Kreplach

But I don't own any "smart devices" Seriously. 99% of the technology in my house is intentionally old-tech.

Thermostat? Analog. No "Smart Thermostats" for me.

TV? 1970s tube TV. No microphone, no internet, nothin.'

Fridge? No electronics.

Cell phone? Only one, and it was literally OFF-off, not simply "inactive." Shut down. Dead. AND in a desk drawer in another part of the house.

No video game consoles. No iPads. No other cell phones. No Echo Dot, no Alexa, no Siri, no Kindle, none of that shit.

So what could it have been, other than my computer?

Posted by: zombie at December 11, 2018 07:13 PM (c+2jX)

269 There is some app on my tablet that busts onto the screen whenever it wants, right now mostly its Instagram. I wouldn't use them if you put a gun to my head.

They send everyone yoga pants ads because odds are 68% of people will buy yoga pants.
Posted by: grammie winger, church pirate

LOL. That might be true. But it was the TIMING that was suspicious. I never have gotten a yoga pants ad before, ever, and then immediately after someone in my house yells "yoga pants!", I get my first yoga pants ad. Weird.

Download a free copy of Audacity; it's an excellent audio editing program. Get it running, and set the computer's microphone as the input device. If the mic can "hear" you, you will see the audio displayed graphically on screen. Then you can do surgery on the mic, until it no longer shows any activity on-screen as you talk. Or shout.

280 "All cell phones in the house were turned off/shut-down/OFF and in desk drawers."

Powered off doesn't mean anything. You have to remove the battery. This used to be an issue with .gov groups, primarily, but now you even need to do it against marketing. If it's something you can't remove the battery from, then a desk drawer isn't going to cut it either, you're going to need more soundproofing or distance.

Also don't forget that data will be gathered on you from *other* people's devices, when possible. You're not in the clear just because you don't own one, or don't have one present. All it takes is one.

Posted by: lurker (the other one) at December 11, 2018 07:19 PM (eAshZ)

281 Russians can buy an election for under $5K. Beto can't buy an election for tens of milions. Advantage Vlad.

282 Tape blocks cameras pretty well. But tape over the microphone grille doesn't help much. The laptop screen acts like a sounding board, and the mic still "hears" ambient sound.

Remove the mic altogether, or at least snip the wire. There are plenty of plug-in mics available if you need one.

That's a spectacular failure of imagination on their part. The first observation is that they only do boring things, until someone at Google objects to them, at which point you can't find them on maps, can't get search hits, etc.
Moonbats at Google can and do carry out routine sabotage against those they perceive as political enemies.

288 I don't know the first thing about technology, but I'm not quite ready to believe that an organization that can secretly and untraceably turn on zombie's phones, hear her through walls, and build a comprehensive profile on her based on machine-learning vocal recognition from snippets of overheard conversations on other peoples' devices is going to piece the puzzle together and send in their doomsday weapon: a web ad for fucking yoga pants on her browser. Wouldn't it be easier to just beat her up and take her wallet or something? Steal her credit card number? I dunno, maybe I'm being crazy here.

295 As an Android developer myself - Sundar is right about that. It's not a yes or no question. There's a level of complexity on these devices that makes a simple "yes or no" answer all but impossible. I have a feeling that the Congressman was just hamming it for the cameras as these hearings often are.

As for Android being a tracking mechanism itself - thats not technically correct. Out of the box Android doesn't have anything to do with Google or any other service provider. It's when Google Play Services gets installed that the phone starts feeding info back to Google.

My phone has two user profiles on it... one of them is completely AOSP (stock) Android which has no google services. If I need to access my Google account I switch user profiles so I can access those services.
