There are so many cases where what
the left accuses Trump of doing ... the left is doing in spades (racism, fomenting hate/violence, killing jobs for the poor, hurting health care). A sound
bite is not enough to expose them. More than five minutes and no one would listen.

110 The Old Man And The Canoe:

It was a grey morning and the man and the boy were at the dock again and they were going to go fishing. The boy was standing in the boat. He had lost both legs below the knee in the War, his war. The old man knew about war and about losing things in a war. The boy wished the old man would tell him about the things he had lost in his own war, but the old man just fished and didn't talk, because when you lose things in a war it does something to your voice. And then all you can do is sit in a boat and fish and think about the things you have lost.

114 Lotta drama surround two men in a boat. Lotta net mending, setting, hauling in; fish cleaning, fish mongering far and wide. Smoking, drying, salting fish for preservation. Two men and a boat could feed a village back in the day when there were fish to be caught.

Of course, the fish are all gone now, from over fishing, pollution, and global warming. All the big factory ships have saturated the market with cheap foreign fish in cans. No one buys fresh anymore.

Sad.

118 The way I read the news release was that they weren't announcing the discovery of the formation but announcing that it was much bigger than originally thought.

Is that wrong?"

Technically, that's correct. The reason they now can say it's bigger than they thought is because of all of the producing wells that have been brought on line that were in areas outside of the officially recognized boundaries, as far as the USGS was concerned. So yeah, the drillers have been gambling on it being real big for some time.

139 just as a bit of trivia, odds are good that Northern Mexico has just as much oil and as many drillable formations as West Texas has. Pemex and the Mexican Government run themselves so incompetently that none of that is even being explored, much less produced, and they are leaving hundreds of billions of dollars of wealth laying beneath the earth because they're too stupid, corrupt, and lazy to actually try to accomplish anything truly productive.

Just remember that when the enviro's say "oh we're gonna run out of oil one day!" We still have barely begun to scratch what's actually down there.

Went to see Petula Clark. Petula is 86 and still has a pretty good voice. Little rough in the beginning but got stronger as she progressed. She did an almost ninety minute set.

Petula could just as easily sat there and told stories about people she'd met and worked with over the years of her life and done some singing as sort of an afterthought. She is a very engaging performer.

Anyway Miss Clark has quite the singing, stage and film resume and I believe she represents the last of a bygone era.

In fact, she closed with a song that gave me the impression she knows this is her last tour and that she went on tour to say good bye.

203 Continuing the old phone number thread from the last post: Back in the early 1980's I started getting phone calls from someone trying to talk to her ex-boyfriend. She refused to believe he wasn't there, and her calls got more and more irate and demanding - this was obviously a woman scorned. I finally got her to stop calling when I said: "Gee, I can't imagine why he broke up with you."

---------------------------

Many years ago, my wife and I started getting phone calls from people looking to rent an apartment, which was odd, since we were in no way associated with any apartments for rent. We did, however, know the place people were calling about, so we drove past it one day. To our surprise, there was a big sign saying "Call about apartment rental" (or something to that effect) with our phone number below it.

We tracked down a number for the management company, and let them know. The calls stopped soon after.

206 178 Tom Servo, 139 - Pemex and YPF, two peas in a pod. Very sad. Unfixable. Yet the mining industries in both countries seem to do OK."

They "seem" to do OK because both companies are focused on stripping out all the obtainable cash out of what they've already got and spreading it around among their stakeholders, most importantly their respective governments. But Venezuela demonstrated the endgame for that type of asset "management" - When Chavez took over, all investment and repairs stopped, and PDvSA began to be strip mined for cash. It was in such good shape (because of the foreign nationals who had previously run it) that they could do that for about 10 - 12 years before production started to seriously drop.

But now, investment has been nil for at least 15 years, and the Venezuelan oil biz is in total collapse, as is the country itself. Desperate people there wonder if there is some quick fix - nope, first the political situation has to be fixed, and then it will take 10 - 15 years of reinvestment to ever get close to where they used to be. So, the current generation has lost the chance to benefit from the wealth they are itting on for good. Maybe, just maybe, their grandchildren can - or maybe it is just too late for that country completely, and they are just going to sink back into the jungle that the place always was.

Looking at this picture I can imagine a scene like that 2,000 years ago. No coolers to store food in. Leaving early morning, returning before dusk. Caloric requirements for men would be at least 2,000 calories, especially with the physical labor of rowing and setting nets. Could well be in the 4,000 calorie range.

What could they possibly consume during that period that would have a high calorie content, not spoil at room temperature, lightweight and could be transported easily?

Is it any wonder that 'Give us this day our daily bread' was part of the prayer of that age?

I like the composition and the technique.

It's probably not going for the next level of realism that I'd like to see. The boat is rather small to have such a high prow, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

And the pier isn't on pilings, which means it's fixed relative to the water, which means this isn't tidal water, which means a lake.

It should be on an ocean. Oceans are better.

The old man knew about war and about losing things in a war. The boy wished the old man would tell him about the things he had lost in his own war, but the old man just fished and didn't talk, because when you lose things in a war it does something to your voice. And then all you can do is sit in a boat and fish and think about the things you have lost.

Also, the whole "i identify as a ___" thing goes the same way. Without parental consent, the kid can't just dictate what they get referred to as.

I'm kind of where you are, but not because of CM. It's been an incredible 10 year ride with these characters and story.

I just don't feel as invested in the next generation. Plus, based on Spiderman, Black Panther and presumably Captain Marvel, politics and SJW crap are gonna start infesting these movies tenfold.

Shame. But at this point idk what can even be done about CM, it's gotta be almost finished by now, right?

I have a sneaking suspicion that this whole "I identify as..." and "my pronouns are..." thing is a passing fad. The reward for winning these little battles just seems so insignificant, I can't imagine (sane) people still fussing about this well into adulthood. In time, it'll be pigeonholed as a behavioral oddity, and will diminish.

The only thing that I can glean from the trailer is.
She was given powers of all the combined Marvel Superheros by space Hilary in space Wakanda and now she is basically the most powerful person in Ginormiverse.
And she always looks like WTF am I doing here?
Anywho, did anyone ask Space Hillary if plucking some preteen girl out of the blue and then turning her into the ultimate killing machine was what she wanted. Was there any consent before they turned her into Space Jason Bourne?

Does space Hilary have any protocols in place when one of the genetically engineered terror weapons goes kerplunkity and turns into ED2000 from Robocop and starts wasting the Ginormiverse?

422 Regarding Pearl Harbor, a little bit of personal history:

My uncle was there and would have been on one of the ships except that he'd just had his appendix out and was in the hospital recovering. He heard the bombings begin and ran for the harbor. And helped those who were brought into the hospital with far worse than an appendectomy scar.

When he shipped soon after, he and the nurse who'd tended him had fallen in love. He told her to wait for him, he was coming back for her.

He served on a supply ship in the Pacific, where it was so hot that he rubbed a hole in his lucky silver dollar that he carried in his pocket.

She waited, and he did return, and they married after the war. That warn-through silver dollar was modified a bit and became his wedding ring.

Which is why I have a branch of my family in Hawaii.

425 395 An insteresting bit about The Prisoner (at least to me!):
The exchange between McGoohan and Number Two: "Who is Number 1?" "You are Number Six!" gives the answer when you add a comma: "You are, Number Six!"

427 The art devolution is sad. Ms. Marvel used to be hot
as hell, if you see her early 2000's art. (the writing was always shit,
sadly)

Brie isn't exactly busty either.

Marvel has done a bad job making any of their female characters sexual, except for ScarJo.

Brie looks sterile and frigid, robotic.

That's the way they want their wimmenz, because males are evil and don't deserve them.

That's why I love Tony Stark and Peter Fucking Quill so much. They actually chased tail.

But Marvel has really failed women. As much as I rag on the DC movies, at least Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn and even the Sorceress were attractive, sexy and sensual as well as powerful.

431 Seriously, I think that school board has set itself up for a 42 U.S. Code 1983 bitch slapping in court.

LOL! You really think we have a functional court system?

433 If you listen to the speech patterns of toddlers, you will notice that they rarely use pronouns at all and, when they do, it's in the first person (ME.) The second person develops next (unless you are Obama) and the third much later.

Thus, when toddlers refer to a 3rd person, it's not "she did it," but "Susu did it" --- or, to make a seasonal football reference, not "he did it," but "da-bo did it."

I therefore believe that, when confronted with a surreal policy based on little more than a toddler's sensibility, the solution is to revert to that speaking age yourself. Just don't use 3rd-person pronouns at all.

I get a still at the beginning of a video where an orangutan is grabbing the boob of a Chinese zoo girl.

And he's got his lips all bent back creepily.

435 Every member of that school board should be doxxed and SWATed without mercy. They should right now be huddled in their houses wondering which is quicker - a noose or a gun.

The fact that they are not shows that, despite Trump, despite the massive number of people who think this sort of thing is utter lunacy, despite all the crowing about the left eating itself, the country is doomed.

My feelings exactly. This country has lost it's moral grounding. And no civilization survives without moral grounding. The Bible and other written history is full of stories about this.
