Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Mid-Morning Open Thread![]() Joshua Reynolds One of the advantages of retrospectives and large collections of a single artist is that one can see how the artist's perspective and technique and hell, emotional outlook changed over the years. One of the things I noticed about Reynolds was that the more intimate the painting was, the more interesting it seemed. The one I posted is grand and bold with lovely colors, but the old lady just seems like some random toff (no, I don't know the feminine equivalent) he scooped up for a sitting. Nothing unique or interesting at all. But his closer portraits reveal a better and more perceptive artist. Or he said to himself, "fvck it, Lord Halliday is a bit of an inbred retard and won't know the difference." Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

More Google-fu says he's also NeoClassical. If so, it was during his later life. I don't know the date on this one, but it looks like there might be a mix of different ideas here, Baroque, Neoclassical, and a hint of Rococo, plus his weather-scapes combined with a classical figure. Artists didn't have to stay with one movement or the other, they did experiment here and there, especially as tastes changed, as they did during Reynolds' time. He was a very successful and well-respected Academician. He could do almost anything he wanted.

"One of the things I noticed about Reynolds was that the more intimate the painting was, the more interesting it seemed."
I've noticed the same phenomenon in Sargent's portraits: the more grandiose they are, the less personality they display - though in Sargent's case, the personality (often unpleasant) often still leaks through. Sargent's smaller, more intimate portraits often were of his friends. There, the personality, and Sargent's affection for them, shows with every brushstroke. Reynolds was very good at painting, and very good at pleasing his customers. The lack of personality may be due to the fact that the persons who commissioned the portraits - usually wealthy, well-connected husbands - wanted a painting that would match the decor and impress the guests, rather than one that would bare the soul. My guess is that from the neck down, Lady Jane looked nothing like this; but also that her husband, who paid the artist's commission, was well pleased with it. Reynolds ran his studio like a factory just as Warhol did at his 'factory' and similar to what Damien Hirst does today, with artist assistants doing the bulk of the work. Reynolds would loosely outline the overall composition but focused most of his efforts on detailing the head and face while his assistants worked body, clothing and background. He would then do the finish to ensure the overall effect was cohesive. He had one artist in his emploiy whose specialty was draperies, for example.
Not knocking Reynolds for doing this. It was the only way he could keep up with commissions, which is also similar to the problems Warhol encountered. Posted by: troyriser at November 28, 2018 10:14 AM (1JpTT) Posted by: Schuyler Saxon Rides a Pale Horse at November 28, 2018 10:14 AM (hrcfq) 189

Posted by: Someguy at November 28, 2018 10:04 AM (t849v) * * What was wrong with it? Yes, we've seen it adapted to film or TV 2000 times (because it's the most visual of the Holmes stories), and we've seen the trope where the supernatural threat turns out to be a hoax by the villain even more times than that. But the atmosphere, the fact that Watson seems to be learning some of Holmes's skills and is trusted by Sherlock to be his man in place during the investigation, is all grand stuff. The style is old-fashioned; yes. Nothing wrong with that. Doyle was a very crisp writer for his time. Try some Dickens if you want looong descriptions. The style is old-fashioned; yes. Nothing wrong with that. Doyle was a very crisp writer for his time. Try some Dickens if you want looong descriptions. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius ---------- Trollope. His books are strictly for reading, there seems intentionally to be no moral. He also lapses into occasional lengthy soliloquies which are amusing. I recall of one of his characters he comments, 'We shall hear of Mr.James no more'. Out of nowhere, in 'Barchester Towers', he comments on long-winded preachers thus: "There is, perhaps, no greater hardship at present inflicted on mankind in civilized and free countries, than the necessity of listening to sermons. No one but a preaching clergyman has, in these realms, the power of compelling an audience to sit silent, and be tormented. No one but a preaching clergyman can revel in platitudes, truisms, and untruisms, and yet receive, as his undisputed privilege, the same respectful demeanour as though words of impassioned eloquence, or persuasive logic, fell from his lips. Let a professor of law or physic find his place in a lecture-room, and there pour forth jejune words and useless empty phrases, and he will pour them forth on empty benches. Let a barrister attempt to talk without talking well, and he will talk but seldom. … A member of Parliament can be coughed down or counted out. Town-councillors can be tabooed. But no one can rid himself of the preaching clergyman. He is the bore of the age … the nightmare that disturbs our Sunday’s rest, the incubus that overloads our religion and makes God’s service distasteful. We are not forced into church! No: but we desire more than that. We desire not to be forced to stay away. We desire, no we are resolute, to enjoy the comfort of public worship; but we desire also that we may do so without an amount of tedium which ordinary human nature cannot endure with patience; that we may be able to leave the house of God without that anxious longing for escape, which is the common consequence of common sermons." ============ I don't think the Chinese are inventing anything. The tech they are using is Crispr tech from the US, just now being applied to human embryos. There are Crispr tech companies all over Boston (and the US) working hard on editing human genes, for therapeutic purposes (curing diseases like ALS and Huntingtons etc). What we don't do is human experimentation until the technology is safe for humans (the regulatory part I guess). CHF itself wouldn't so much make you have a chronic cough, but long-term treatment with ACE inhibitors such as lisinopril or enalapril (used to treat congestive heart failure) can have chronic cough as a long-term side effect. I was in the hospital last January for CHF. They treated me with IV diuretics. I have never peed so much in my life. They pulled almost 20 pounds of liquid from my body in three days. And I'm not that big, either. Now I take furosemide and I'm now rather svelte for a 29-year-old, even if I do say so myself. Posted by: BackwardsBoy at November 28, 2018 10:58 AM (HaL55) 381

I did get my husband to the clinic (and then on to the cardiologist). They diagnosed CHF, but all his organs are fine. So far, he's lost 37 pounds of water weight in a week, using diuretics. I suspect there's at least another 20 to go. He could have avoided it, if he'd just come to bed at night instead of falling asleep in the recliner.

RE: Reynolds
"Nothing unique or interesting at all. But his closer portraits reveal a better and more perceptive artist." Isn't that the case with most of the classic portraitists? Rembrandt may be the exception. A perfect example are Van Dyck's cartoonish paintings of Charles I. The only interesting work of the Charles group was likely influenced by Lotto's Portrait of a Man in Three Positions, which was in Charles I's collection at this time. None of his patronage painting compares to his Iconography series. Velázquez's portrait of Pope Innocent X was a departure from the norms and a real risk taking; but his Las Meninas is just a clever device to please his patron. One must pay the bills and keep one's head, no? Posted by: Shanks for the memory at November 28, 2018 02:55 PM (TdCQk) Processing 0.07, elapsed 0.0896 seconds. |
