Just about every election I've ever witnessed has the Dems up big early in the day and then later the Republican surge comes.
I just don't think you can get any meaningful data at this stage, on any side.
I'm skeptical you can get much from early voting unless they actually tabulate Republican vs Democrat voters. And even then, it changes all the time with respect to which side has more heavy early voters, etc.

There's a Supreme Court oral argument on CSPAN3 now. I'm only half listening, not sure what they're going on about, something to do with appeal rights after plea agreements.
It's kind of soothing background noise. It's smart people poking each other with ideas. It's the first I've heard with Kavanaugh and Goresuch and they sound good. Heck, Sotomayor and Kagan sound good. Everyone's doing their "hey, we're Supreme Court Justices" schtick very well.
You know who sounds like a douche? Breyer. I didn't even follow his argument, he's just like "doesn't my voice sound like gilded shit and aren't my mind-droppings aromatic?"

I think that Multnomah County (the county that Portland is in) will manufacture enough additional votes to elect Brown, if the race is at all close. They've had a lot of time to plan for this contingency, and they have no intention of losing power.
After three straight decades of Democratic rule in Oregon, the number of skeletons in the closets of state government is doubtless huge.

In my very blue county of NC, I vote republican or third party whenever I can, plus vote for myself or a friend on any write-in opportunities...then I can go check to make sure my ballot was counted if I want. I read that here so it must work......a way to try to keep them honest.
Also we had a number of state amendments on the ballot. All the yard signs said NO CHANGES to NC's Constitution....so I knew there were at least some that I wanted to vote for!

I have NEVER seen such a turnout. Beats the presidential election. Cars backed up, traffic jams, and my polling place (our church) has people waiting on parking spaces.
My husband went by before 7:00 on his way to work, and had to wait in a long line for the doors to open.
I attended my monthly committee meeting at church at 10:00, and when we came out at 12:00, I was stunned to see the lines still so long. Ran an errand, grabbed a sandwich at Publix, and am heading back to wait in line.
Hope and pray this bodes well for a Red Wave.

I'll never forget election day 2016. I stood in a very long line in my liberal neighborhood to vote for Trump, and as I looked at all the confident lefties joking and laughing, I got gloomier and gloomier. I went to work and spoke a little with a conservative doctor I know well and it was like we were mourning the death of a dear friend. I didn't even want to turn on the TV when I got home and instead followed the AOSHQ election threads because I figured it would hurt less here among friends. And then - at about 9 pm eastern some fine 'ron told me to turn on the TV, all would be well.
The point I'm making is it is too easy to look around at your immediate environment (especially conservatives who live in blue areas) and think your little corner of the world represents the entire state, or the country. I was always pessimistic about Walker's chances, because I never saw any Walker signs where I lived. Yeah, I guess red state conservatives can make the same error (unfortunately, the whole country is not like Texas) but blue state conservatives like ace are bound to be cautious.

We do have natural selection, it's just no longer selecting for the things it used to select for.
Natural selection just means the ones that reproduce the most pass their genes/traits on to their offspring. It doesn't make a value judgement about the "quality" of those genes by any objective metric other than "does this get passed on."

It wasn't Clinton; it was Obama. The DNC was tens of millions in debt at the start of the 2016 election cycle, and Clinton had plenty of money. So she paid down those debts in exchange for putting her people in all the key positions. That's why she had the nomination sewed up before the primary season even started.

According to BallotPedia (???), House of Rep retirements are 36 R and 18 D as of mid-October.
Looking at the HoR election on a macro level:
1) Current House makeup is 238 R and 191 D, w/6 vacancies. (Caveat: I don't know if the vacancies are included in the retirements above. I'll assume they are not.)
2) After retirements, then, current House makeup would be (238-36=202) R and (191-18=173) D.
3) Requirement for House majority is 218.
4) That means D's have to win 45 of the 60 open races, which currently are split 39 R vs. 21 D, in order to win the majority.
5) I don't see it happening.
6) (My other assumption is that incumbent advantage is as strong as ever. If it's not, I believe that will break in R's favor also.)
With that, I'm outta here. Already voted, and tomorrow is soon enough to learn the results, as far as I'm concerned.
