Mid-Morning Open Thread

Toulemouche Letter.jpg

The Letter
Auguste Toulmouche

Dear President Trump,

Please start your reelection campaign this morning. While I am pleased with your accomplishments, and the possibility of another (or two!) Supreme Court appointment along with a sea change in the rest of the Federal judiciary fills me with glee, The possibility of a Democrat victory in 2020 is one that is too terrible to contemplate. The midterms are always difficult, and you survived last night in reasonably good shape...certainly better than your last several predecessors.

Fortunately I have no campaign advice to give you, and I base that decision on the reality that if I had been giving you advice in 2016, this morning we would be halfway through a Hillary Clinton presidential term.

I do however have some comments. Your instincts with real Americans are marvelous; if you could make personal contact with every voter I have no doubt that your reelection would be a sure and wondrous thing. But your enemies are entrenched everywhere, and their only mission is to manipulate your message.

And what is that message? MAGA? Of course, but your work with the economy -- in particular regulation -- has paid dividends that are carefully minimized and hidden and even credited to others. As a vile but clever political operative once said, "It's the economy, stupid!" And yes, the majority of America wants that wall built and illegal immigration stopped. How to send that message without giving daily soundbites to the whores of the media is a difficult task, and one that I believe you can accomplish.

Our standing in the world has always been a difficult one to manage. As long as you support our friends and project strength, the American people will trust you, because the truth is that they don't really care what French academics or Canadian SJWs or British MPs think of us. Keep our sons out of unnecessary conflicts and we will trust you with the rest.

Most of all, always remember who your enemies are. The elites of the Acela corridor gave their friends the Democrats victory last night. Does anyone really believe that a united Republican party would have lost that many seats? Bipartisanship should be a dirty word in the mouths of all Republicans. It is the President...you!...who makes the decision to accommodate the opposing party. It is not the purview of some back-bencher with delusions of grandeur. Bind your allies in Congress to you with hoops of steel, and punish those who would defy you. If a purge is necessary, then do it with alacrity! The American people reward decisiveness.

And most of all? Do what you promised. Good things will flow from that!

Cheers,
CBD

One lesson I don't think the Dems have learned is this: They may try to do term limits, congressional veto, etc. but they fail to realize that when they lose power, these measures remain and WILL be used against them. We've seen it with the SCOTUS votes, etc.

You may be right. The truth is, the Kavanaugh/Graham thing really ticks me off. Graham was all for comity and bipartisanship until a *personal friend* was unfairly targeted. It tells us who his "tribe" is.

Not his base or conservatives in general, they had been physically and socially attacked for over a decade and he couldn't care less. Not other R members of congress, Scalise was nearly killed in an assassination attempt targeting his party and it changed nothing for him. Not even other R senators, since the attack on Rand Paul didn't change his opinions or actions. No, it was a (vile, and wildly unjust, but not actually *life* threatening like the others) social attack on a fellow Bushy and life-long DC dweller that finally got him upset enough to question his assumptions. In the final analysis, The Swamp is Graham's tribe and I resent that.

68 Well, it's all about me so I'll transport this from below:

763 [Long sigh] Well, that didn't go as well as I had hoped. I'm generally depressed these days but this is really a downer. Some takeaways:

1. Zod is correct about the city/rural divide, and it's only going to get worse.

2. The constant screaming about Trump Bad Man To Women worked. Women turned out bigly and it hurt bad.

3. People like some aspects of ObamaCare. Not having a replacement for it hurt more than we probably realize.

4. If a RINO runs against The Donald in 2020--and Jockstrap Romney is just the cuck to do it--it will damage him enough to make victory in the general election impossible.

I'm not sure the Trump phenomenon is sustainable. I think we are becoming a socialist nation and Trump was just a pause. Somebody please tell me I'm wrong.

90 When put into perspective, losing the HOR by only 30 or so seats is quite an impressive hold considering historical Presidential first term midterms and the additional challenge of overcoming the mass (40+) R retirements, not to mention the RNC having written those seats off ever since Trump was inaugurated. The pickups in the Senate and all the media chosen messiah statewide candidates(Berto,Gilllum, Abrams) that went down make it a not so bad election.

However, Trump has shown them the way: FIGHT. Bypass the information gatekeepers. WORK FOR IT! Look how he campaigned. Never apologize. Never go on defense.
The GOP leadership in blue states have to be purged.
President Trump should demand it. The fossils have to be tossed, and young fighters put in.

168 I think the GOP needs to finally wave the white flag and surrender on the 60+ year war to hold back socialized medicine.

Honestly, the government's tentacles and penetration in privatized healthcare makes it virtually impossible to ever reform it to have the free market approach work.

Socialized medicine will mean poorer care, longer waits and absolute greater death counts/panels, but F* it, it's what everyone apparently wants and the people have spoken.

Focus the R platform on the remaining realistic principles we can hold on to and the Trump agenda.

175 I went to bed early and sat out all the election hoopla last night. And after reading the results this morning - the only real effect I can see is that as a county, we no longer have a functional legislature. Congress is now irrelevant, except as a noise making machine for CNN. There will be no legislation of any significance passed, no resolution of any issues - nothing at all will happen. Except that in the Senate, Trump's appointees should have an even easier time getting approved.

So that's it - for all the Rep/Dem Con/Lib agitation, what is happening in reality is that we have moved almost completely into a form of government that is run solely by the Executive and the Judiciary. We no longer have a legislature. We might as well just abolish it and go straight to the Chinese Model - we're most of the way there already.

While I'm sure she's a fine candidate, I think that would be a mistake. It would send the signal to the Democrats that we fear the #MeToo hoaxes they used against Kavanaugh and we seek to avoid this by nominating a woman.

We can't let them think they have the power to influence (let alone veto) our decisions. Any sort of backing down or fearfulness we display, will simply lead to them using the same tactics again and again. They won't abandon what is even the slightest bit effective.

We were once known for having the very best health system in the world using a system that was operated mostly by the private sector. 248 There's certainly some things to smile about today:

1. Fl gov race - The Dems REALLY wanted that one and poured a lot of $ into it. Lost

2. We in Florida got the most conservative governor we've had in my lifetime AND a Trump backer to boot. DeSantis will get to appoint 3 state supreme court justices. Plus the state house and senate are also in GOP hands, so 2020 redistricting will be much better than it would have been under Gillum (blech). Maybe we can even purge the voter rolls of the dead and transplants who vote in 2 states with no fear of retribution

3. FL senate race - Nelson: GONE after 40 years in government here.

4. GA gov - Abrams is toast. She and her followers are the only ones who refuse to recognize it. Sorry toots.

5. at least 4 R Senate pickups. Clarence Thomas can step down if he wants to retire, Trump can appoint who he wants, and we have some breathing room on the confirmation. And between Cocoaine Mitch and PDT, we can ram through the confirmation of dozens of judges who will be around for YEARS to come. If that doesn't make Cryin' Chuck weep into his pillow, I don't know what will.

6. The spectacle of these idiots taking over the chairmanships in the House, while annoying at best, will at the same time be hilarious to watch.

7. Soros, Bloomberg, Hollywood, and these stupid NYers & Californians who poured over $70 million into Robert Francis' campaign have nothing to show for it.

8. Project Veritas' capture on film of the allowance of DACAs to vote in Texas has Greg Abbott spitting fire. Guarantee that won't go by the wayside. We may even get the enjoyment of perp walks

There are more, and that's only in 3 states.

Yes, I know they were all closer than they should have been. But let's enjoy our victories where we have them :-)

My Congresscritter,Ann Wagner, got 51% yesterday, which is an extraordinarily low total for this area. Best explanation I can give is that a lot of people are really really fed up with the R Congress, and she's about as insider as it gets.

So my point being, I don't think some of these razor thin margins represent enthusiasm on the left, as much as it was dead tired lack of it on the right. People stayed home. That's my guess as to how so many of these races went the way they did.

Two years from now will look extraordinarily different from this year. I'm not smart enough to know how, I just don't think this result represents anything like a trend. Even the R's winning a bunch of Senate seats. It only means what it does, this time.

How effective are rallies, canvassing, calling vs social media/MSM? Trump had large rallies, but that's because he's the President.

Social media and the networks are able and willing to censor ads, censor content, promote #FakeNews, delete accounts, shadowban, etc. Also, social media is more cost effective relative to canvassing. I think finding alternative platforms should be prioritized.

There should be no doubt after 2008 that of course States will be bailed out when the time comes. They printed $10 trillion to give to banks, there will be no limit to what they'll give to states. There isn't even a legal mechanism for states to declare bankruptcy (yet).

Let's look at it this way: Getting rid of GOPe Never Trumpers in the house was a painful thing that had to be done, and the price will be the Dems on display in all their finest idiocy.

And I think winning the FL gov race carries so much more consequences for 2020 than everyone has yet to grasp. A swing state with the 3rd highest # of electoral votes, a conservative Trumper for governor and a GOP state house and senate, who will redistrict the state accordingly in 2 years. And just might purge the registered voter lists of fraud. And who will have 3 new state supreme court judges who most likely won't prevent this.

Don't think Trump and his team haven't thought about a lot of this.

I think it makes it much easier for Trump to win in 2020.

We discussed it yesterday or the day before, so forgive me for posting the number again, but it's important.

107,000

One hundred and seven thousand.

That's how many people, out of 300 million, signed up for Obama's pre-existing condition plan when they opened it up around 2010. 107K.

And most of those people COULD have gotten insurance. They just didn't want to pay what it cost.

The genius of it is that it plays on everyones fears. Oh no, what if I can't get insurance because I develop high blood pressure! I'd better pay $200/month more now so I don't have to pay $7/month more in twenty years!

A bunch of GOP jackasses bailed, costing the GOP the house?
Posted by: Blake - used ampersand salesman&&&&& at November 07, 2018 10:15 AM (qC1Sy)

Posted by: Marybeth at November 07, 2018 10:22 AM (CmURZ)

Finally we may have purged a good chunk of RINOs and GOPe symps. The good news is that the Dems now face a similar problem. They've got too many fossils like Palsi and Muddy Waters, and too many loons like Occasional Cortex and Burkha Incest to effectively oppose Trump.

502 Let's have a reality check today. Two and four years ago we talked about picking off RINOs in our party. It sure happened here in Texas with two of the most powerful house members in Pete Sessions and John Culberson getting the boot.

Let's be honest. They needed to go. They supported funding planned parenthood. They do not support building the wall. They advanced the tax cuts with no regard to limit spending. They are loyal Paul Ryan/John Boehner lieutenants.

While Cruz ended up in a much closer race than I thought he would he still won and he took a lot of bullets for several senators that did not have as much money going against them because it flowed to Texas.

Biggest warning is two generations of open borders have swamped Houston and Harris County.

559 We have two parties. Simple question:

Which position would you like to be in today?

a) GOP's

b) Demo's

c) NeverTrumper's

There are reasons to be pessimistic and worry, but there always are. What I suggest is do what you can to shut off the money flowing to those you disagree with--even if it means giving up some things you like. Why did Beto have millions in Texas? Why was Demo fundraising so good?

Above all, stop supporting the media that gives "in kind" donations through the coverage not only of prog candidates but prog ideas.

One of the reasons I think so many are pessimistic is that they let the media (who they know is full of it on ideas) influence them on the news.

I never watched a single talking head yesterday (liberal or conservative). I just looked at numbers and results. After 2016 do you still think those people have a better handle on things than you can figure out for yourself?

I sometimes read political opinions, and I'll watch the actual politicians and candidates. But heck if I need to listen to or watch people who are essentially hired as entertainers to help me understand what's going on in the country.

570 Here's what I think needs to happen.

I think the RNC needs to get a REAL LEADER. A Lindsey Graham type leader who says flat out, "if you take one dime of our money, you will say what we tell you to say and vote how we tell you to vote, otherwise, you WILL NEVER GET ELECTED AGAIN."

Get in line, motherfuckers, and don't even SNEEZE without permission.

It's all about the money, and without the National Committee, no one gets anywhere.

574 Two takeaways that I see,

One, tribalism is alive and well and the civic nationalism ideal is dying as a consequence along with the republic. When voting becomes separated from policy consequences (good or ill) but focuses instead on identity, then struggle over control of government to take and distribute benefits and apply the costs to the losers of political contests becomes paramount. Investment then becomes a sucker's game because the gains can be easily taken. Thus, a flight to wealth conservation and greater concern with hiding it rather than investment. In this case, its the economy stupid no longer applies as does the scandal quotient (see Menendez and Ellison as examples).

Two, we are in the process of morphing into an incompetent empire. Both federalism and the separated institutions still provide some bulwarks to tyranny but the coming paralysis of government action means that critical long term policymaking is impossible. This affects things like the government debt and unsustainable entitlement spending, foreign and military policy, corruption in government and its institutions, combating use of internet tech to prevent privatizing social control of individuals, and immigration.
This will have consequences and I see similar exhaustion throughout the West. The risk is that historically the internal weakness of a particular civilization becomes viewed as opportunity for hostile states and barbarians to loot and plunder.

630 We've known for a long time that people can vote themselves money out to the treasury. The problem becomes when people get really comfortable with that idea. The struggle has been to keep people thinking that was a really bad idea.

The propagandists have convinced more and more that it's not so bad. But, a republic lasts until people learn--and become accustomed to--voting themselves money out of the treasury.

But, a white guy said that, so it's a white idea. Look at all these diverse countries where they are not so hung up about voting themselves money out to the treasury. It's racist to want to insist on white ideas over diverse ideas in all those countries people are fleeing as economic refugees.

Posted by: Hikaru at November 07, 2018 10:47 AM (UnA8+)

My poor mother lived long enough to see him elected. She was in the ER on election night, and my idiot sister strolled in wearing a huge Obama/Biden button. Just had to rub it in our sweet little mother's face.

After she died, her best friend told me how my sister broke Mother's heart. It wasn't news to me.

That's awful, Jane. Hope she gets her comeuppances.

He hated Obama more than I do. And that's saying a lot.

651 Locally, the one proposition I wanted lost, because the teachers have their foot on the voters' necks. Teachers don't want something passed? It won't pass. The state of education is bad, but no one wants to do anything to fix it. Just shovel more and more money into a corrupt system and keep funneling kids into the machine. It's too bad no one actually thinks about the children.

Our mayoral vote went blue, so that's great.

Our privacy went down the drain, but no one cares, because clean elections, amirite?

The rest of the props went about how they should.

Senate race? Still counting the votes. It's a testament to how right Sinema is about this state - that she could get so many votes after spewing hate all over us. She's the quintessential gossip monger - running around behind people's backs to talk nasty. She should have been roundly trounced, but instead, it's coming down to the wire. That's AZ, alright.

GOP has a tougher Senate slate in 2020 because of more incumbents being up, but having 54 or 55 probably means it'll take a wave election to give the Dems the Senate, and Trump being up ballot should prevent that.
