My nephew who was conservative when he lived with me strangely contracted a severe case of TDS after he started college (and made many bad choices which shocked and caused dismay to the family). He did encounter some overt racism there, which was new to him after living for four years in a super white area. Although his current group of friends is mostly white.
I should have known something was up when he started telling me that The View is actually a good show. Sigh. Anyway, the TDS nephew has voted today for his first time. I was hoping he would forget or not be prepared or something. I work from home and I can see the polling place from my office window. I'll go when there aren't that many cars, probably mid afternoon. Lenin, and to a greater degree Stalin, realized that their greatest threat to power were the Bolsheviks that helped the Communist Party rise to power. A lot of them were purists, and wouldn't like the personal tyranny that Lenin and then Stalin imposed.
So in the passing of time, all the old Bolsheviks were taken to the big Lubyanka and shot. "If only Comrade Stalin knew, he would stop this!" He planned it. And Stalin likely had Lenin poisoned so he could take his place. Posted by: Bozo Conservative....unfrozen caveman moron at November 06, 2018 09:46 AM (vcOmj) 90

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at November 06, 2018 09:41 AM (mpXpK) I want to punch someone every time I hear that argument spewed by some brainwashed Leftoid. Communism can never become anything else, because of redistribution. When a government bureau is given control of all possessions, it becomes an aristocracy by definition - literally a small group that controls all the wealth. As GK Chesterton put it, there has never been an aristocracy that didn't behave exactly like a small gang. In my own words, creating an aristocracy in the name of material equality is contradictory, and self-defeating. Posted by: Cato by Phone at November 06, 2018 09:48 AM (J+mig) 112

"Comrades! The insurrection of five kulak districts should be pitilessly suppressed. The interests of the whole revolution require this because 'the last decisive battle' with the kulaks is now under way everywhere. An example must be demonstrated. 1.Hang (and make sure that the hanging takes place in full view of the people) no fewer than one hundred known landlords, rich men, bloodsuckers. 2.Publish their names. 3.Seize all their grain from them. 4.Designate hostages in accordance with yesterday's telegram. Do it in such a fashion that for hundreds of kilometres around the people might see, tremble, know, shout: "they are strangling, and will strangle to death, the bloodsucking kulaks". Telegraph receipt and implementation. Yours, Lenin. P.S. Find some truly hard people" - Lenin, to the leadership of the Penza district Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at November 06, 2018 09:49 AM (LsBY9) 117

On a percentage basis, Pol Pot is tough to beat . Something like 20 per cent of Cambodia's population.
He was a "reformer", and wanted to return Cambodia to an agrarian society. So the "intellectuals" had to go. As in, people who could read. Even people who wore glasses. The idea was, killing people with glasses, would improve eyesight over time. Hm. One of the schemes for the genocide used, under the pretense of issuing new ID cards or some kind of rough equivalent, many people were instructed to report to the countryside. Never seen again. Mechanics and laborers, anyone with any sort of technical experience was targeted too. I've been to the site of the killing fields. The soil still has a grey color, and an odor. Alas, this is a good painting. The artist was a student of my favorite Russian painter, Ilya Repin. What's interesting is that Lenin was very supportive of the Avant Garde. After his death tho, Stalin forced Russian art to develop Socialist Realism. This is an early example. I can't help but think that Brodsky was influenced somehow by David's "Marat". It was the first thing I thought of when I saw this work. They are very, very similar.

Does anyone else think Lenin's head looks a touch big? I mean that the baldness gives him a large forehead. A slight reference to his intelligence, maybe?
Not to me. And I did a rough measurement with my thumb on the screen and he seems to be seven heads tall, which is the natural human proportion. (Superheros get drawn eight heads tall). I think the painting is masterful. The only part that doesn't work for me is the way he's holding his pencil. You don't feel any pressure on his thumb or fingers. That's a pretty minor quibble. She's been running ad after ad against him, buying up pretty much every available media slot across all platforms. I would say she spent north of 30 mill to get this seat. Meanwhile Jay Webber has barely run a campaign. His idea of campaigning involves having the biggest lawn signs but virtually no commercial advertising and zero, zip, nada, mail advertising. What a disgrace. Posted by: Kreplach There is a strategy, not saying I agree, that you run a campaign when the trend is against you to build name recognition and cash for the next cycle. Before 1871 we can blame the French. Napoleon III basically picked a fight with Prussia after his Mexican adventure turned to dust.
Note: Napoleon III only pulled France out of Mexico in 1866 when a U.S. Army, under Phil Sheridan, showed up on the border. If war would had broken out in 1866 it would have been entertaining. In fact when you look at Europe today it has not really changed much. 1a. Germany 1b. France. Combine them together and you get the E.U. - Double the stupidity. 320 Not that it particularly matters (and Uncle Palp probably knows more than I), I understand that the female form of Tsar is not Tsarina, but Tsaritsa. Something to do with the Russian language.
not according to wiktionary, for what it's worth. according to them, "tsarina" is a more german form that took a detour through italian or spanish (czarin being the german form, italian or spanish feminising it with -a), with the russian form being "tsaritsa". 'course, it's all descended from "caesar". =====\|/==== adibas experimantal palp signal Posted by: Anachronda at November 06, 2018 10:37 AM (NmR1a) 411

I mean I hope today is full of actual wins, but if James loses by less than 5 I'll consider it a moral victory that bodes very well for him winning in 2020. That's a hard slate for us and we need every pick-up we can get, so I hope they'll actually pump a decent bit of money to him and get him some air time. He's an impressive candidate so far and every bit of attention he's gotten has led to him getting a bump in the polls.

410 "tsarina" is a more german ... with the russian form being "tsaritsa". oh. forgot to mention. one complication here is that in russian a possessive can be formed using an -in suffix, with -ina for the feminine. so the tsar's wife could be described as tsarina zhenshchina. so "tsarina" might be appropriate for a queen who is not, herself, a ruler; i.e., alexandra might be tsarina (being tsarina due to being the tsar's wife) while catherine the great might be tsaritsa (being, the ruler herself). but i'm no expert. Posted by: Our Country is Screwed at November 06, 2018 10:42 AM (jxbfJ) ========== That Battle is probably first or second most interesting thing in the whole war (The Battle of New Orleans is the other). Still, there are pockets of interest. The burning of Washington. The near secession of the Northeastern states. It's too bad that it's a largely forgotten conflict, especially since it nominally started about national pride and sovereignty around British impressment of American sailors in the service of the Napoleonic Wars. (There were those who helped start it because they wanted to add Canada to America as well, which is the biggest subtextual reason for the conflict.) What's wrong with kicking the shit out of France? Posted by: Bandersnatch at November 06, 2018 10:00 AM (fuK7c) On the surface, nothing wrong with that. But a reunited Germany gave Willie Kaiser the power to really make a mess of Europe in 1914. If he had just succeeded as King of Prussia, no one would have given him a second thought. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at November 06, 2018 10:03 AM (veoSD) You can blame that on the Hapsburgs. The loss by the Austrianngarian empire allowed the Prussians to consolidate Germany, iirc. the French, thinking the germans were worn out and looking to prevent Prussian dominance over Europe started the franco-prussian war. which ended up creating a fully unified Germany... Posted by: SturmToddler at November 06, 2018 10:50 AM (8D42x) ============= I have my doubts that Prussia wouldn't be a threat in the absence of the Franco Prussian war. Repeat/elaboration of my quickie polling place report in the EMT:
Eastern Jackson County, Missouri, red precinct. Woke up at 4:30 for some reason, had some coffee. The polls open in Missouri at 6 am so I decided to go vote early. Got to the polling place about 6:10 am, the line was already out the door of the middle school that's the polling place. Probably somewhere around 100 people ahead of me in line. Took about a half hour to get my ballot. I voted (paper ballot) on the bleachers of the school gym because all the voting "machines" (booths) as well as the six or eight temporary ones set up on plastic folding tables were all in use. As I was leaving, I saw one guy coming in with a MAGA shirt on. He was the only one who had political-message clothing on that I noticed . . . you can't display political messages on clothing in Missouri, so I wondered if he was going to get talked to by the election judges. I don't have any idea if that's heavy or not for my precinct because I've never been crazy enough to vote that early before, but local media reports that voting is heavy elsewhere in the KC metro. KC metro is basically inner-city Kansas City MO and KS (deep Dem country), Missouri suburban (from light-blue Dem close into KC to deep, deep, deep red R in the outer suburbs). The Kansas side, uber-rich Johnson County is GOPe territory, otherwise it gets redder the farther out from the central cities of KCMO/KCK you get (except communist Lawrence/Douglas County KS (Kansas University). Sunoco is mostly an East Coast and Midwest brand. Nope, different company than Conoco. The original name of Sunoco was the Sun Oil Company. Conoco was the Continental Oil Company. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at November 06, 2018 11:01 AM (vOkuK) 645
Lenin suffered from the shingles for a long time. We can hope that this depicts the murderous asshole recovering from an outbreak. More likely it's intended to depict him near the end, when he wrote his testament warning that Stalin was a vicious bureaucrat and general psychopath who would basically turn everything Lenin had built to shit. Stalin made sure very few actually saw that testament until it was too late.

It's too bad that it's a largely forgotten conflict, especially since it nominally started about national pride and sovereignty around British impressment of American sailors in the service of the Napoleonic Wars. (There were those who helped start it because they wanted to add Canada to America as well, which is the biggest subtextual reason for the conflict.) ==================== Other factors were British meddling in the US northwest and the British-French plundering of US merchant ships in the Atlantic. I strongly recommend Albert Z. Carr's book "The Coming of War" (Doubleday, 1960). It covers the events between 1783-1812 that led to the War of 1812. 18th century Realpolitik.
